Live Thread: Magic @ Cavs

The Cavs get to play their first back-to-back of the season tonight at the Q. Thankfully, it is against the Magic, who are coming off of a loss to the Nets. The Magic still haven’t turned a corner, and will be without two of their most promising players players : Elfrid Payton (Hamstring) and Adreian Payne (Left Hand).
Derrick Rose will miss the game for the Cavs with an ankle sprain. Jose Calderon is slated to get the start.
Three Things To Watch
1. Nikola Vucevic is the Magic’s best scorer. This is the first time this season the Cavs are playing a team with a center that’s the focus of the offense. Kevin Love will see some time on Vucci Mane. This will be a good test to see how focused he his on the defensive end because Nikola is a jack of most trades offensively, he has a bevy of post moves and can can an 18-footer.
2. The Cavs have actually been running some more more based stuff to date this season. Dwyane Wade and Jae Crowder have shown the ability to work off the ball fairly efficiently. Same with Kyle Korver. Tyronn Lue should keep trying to work some of these off-ball motions into the offense. The team isn’t going to be as deadly with the Le-Drive and Dish offense as it was last season just because they don’t have as many shooters. Any new ways to create open shots will help the Cavs greatly.
3. With Derrick Rose out, Wade, and Jeff Green will have even more chances to handle the ball. They need to show some discipline and pass the ball when nothing is happening. If they can limit their dribbling to running after a rebound, the Cavs will be in a great spot all evening.
The Magic are not a strong team, but the Cavs need to respect them. This should be a simple win and the starters should get much of the fourth off. I’m picking the Cavs, 123-90.
Korver. Crowder and J.R. have been awful this game.
And Wade.
He’s been OK. Leads the team in assists and has been payed good defense.
Haven’t gotten very many open shots for any of them. Crowder hasn’t been good though. Wade has been terrible despite his name and reputation from 5 years ago which I know you evaluate players on.

And defense. And not turning the ball over at crucial times. And shot selection. Bad Wade jumpers. Bad shump jumpers. Lack of off ball movement except for the second quarter.
Also at doing anything to stop the Magic…84 points and not the end of the third yet…

I kind of hate to say it but much better continuity with Rose in with the second unit. Their offense looked nothing like last night in what they did off ball except in the second quarter.
Agreed, Rose has been pushing pace, penetrating and finishing or kicking out, he was even playing well off ball with the Lebron running the offense.
Jeff Green is so bad when offense runs through him.
He’s pretty bad when he’s doing anything but slashing to the rim and dunking…
Cavs may have missed their chance. Back to 17. Going to be tough to get it back to manageable without running out of gas later.

Magic have been moving the Ball extremely well tonight. We just can’t stop penetration on the perimeter.
Can’t get over the hump. Down to 7 off a once in a blue mood Wade three and then basically 3 or 4 straight tos.

Agreed. He’s stunk tonight, too.
Better second quarter after an abysmal first. Their best offense in that time was the two man game between love and LBJ. They have to find a way to cut off orlando’s penetration as it is leading to a downpour of threes. They probably need to avoid the shump, green, Wade lineups. I hope to see some more Korver double screens with the addition of the weakside guy cutting or the first screener rolling hard immediately after the screen.
Love and LeBron is all we have tonight. Hope it isn’t long before JR is in the starting lineup again. Think we will still win this one

Tremendous chemistry on cuts between k love and LBJ this year. Good things happen when the ball is in either of those guys hands at the high post and guys cut.
Love and LeBron so much more comfortable playing off each other now, great to see.

Think this current unit misses rose. Not much action. Just guys standing around while there is a single pick and roll or an ISO penetration attempt. Of course being down 22 on your home floor at the start of the second will do that.

I got pretty well resigned to the cavs laying down in back to backs last year. A high energy high paced team like Orlando is not an ideal opponent for us in this situation.
We aren’t closing on anyone. Giving up 8 threes and hitting none is almost unfathonable

Well they wouldn’t have without James taken all of Orlando to the hoops. This team is probably going to be bad on back to backs. Much less player movement than last night, probably due to fatigue. They also looked like they had lead boots on the defensive end while the magic picked them apart with penetration.

Well a bit slow on defensive rotations to start and getting caught on bad switches on d leading to easy penetration and wide open threes. Cavs have missed some shots on offense but I would like to see them put Vucevic in some more pick and rolls. Also cavs have been kind of standing around on the perimeter while a single action takes place on the strong side. Would be nice to see if they can use Korver and Smith’s gravity coming round stagger screens as distractions while either one of the screeners slips to the buckets or someone cuts… Read more »
