Live Thread: Cavs vs. Warriors (#SilverLinings)
2018-01-15Just when you thought it was safe to watch a Cavs game again… along comes the annual MLK matchup with the Golden State Warriors. Who could forget the last two occasions? Last season, the defending Champs got housed by 35 in an embarrassing loss in the Bay Area… yet, it didn’t seem quite as horrific as the MLK Massacre of 2016 that ultimately cost David Blatt his job. Still, losing by a combined 69 points on this particular holiday has inspired more nightmares than dreams for the Cavaliers and their faithful.
If that wasn’t depressing enough, this year’s tilt comes on the heels of one of the roughest rough patches the wine & gold has experienced in the LeBron 2.0 era. The Cavs have lost three straight (in spectacular fashion), five of their last seven and eight of their last 11. They’ve looked out of sync on offense, and almost non-existent on defense, struggling to work out their rotations on both ends of the floor. Ty Lue doesn’t seem to have answers, outside of the cryptic “agenda” narrative. LeBron seems at a loss. Even the ever positive Isaiah Thomas is a bit down… calling his first two decent games “fools gold” after going just 5-26 from the field in his last two games.
Okay… enough of the bad news. The good news is that the Cavs are returning home to the Q, where they still own a 13 game winning streak (easy enough to forget with 17 of the last 20 days spent on the road). Cleveland is 15-4 at home, third best record in the NBA, and LeBron is averaging nearly a triple double in games at the Q this season (29.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg and 9.9 apg). Yes, they’re facing a fully healthy Warriors team (Steph Curry missed the Christmas Day game at their place), which has been on a tear since Curry returned, winning 12 straight on the road. However, there’s something to be said for having your collective back against the wall… especially against a team you are desperate to beat.
The recipe for disaster is there for sure, and there’s every reason to believe this could be another crushing MLK blowout given how good the Dubs have been and how bad the Cavs have been lately. Yet, the Cavs have rarely done the expected thing this season… and pulling out a win against the defending Champs would be just the kind of weird end to this rough patch that nobody would see coming.
Prediction: The Cavs clear away the dark clouds and find a silver lining amongst the Golden onslaught… taking a close one 110-108.
Again, I have no idea if this will come to pass… although the last three games I covered (Bulls, Blazers, Magic) just happened to be the three games the Cavs won during this 11 game stretch… so there’s another silver lining.
Catch all the action starting at 8pm EST on TNT… and, as always… chime in here!
This is where we suck…. Stupid stupid passes
So much more pick-and-roll instead of isolation tonight. Much more purposeful offense and much better screens.
LeBron vs. Curry, Durant and Iguodala on that three-point play.
A little bit of D will go a long way tonight with the way the Cavs are shooting…
James just doesn’t have the same arc on his J he had earlier in the year. Didn’t hate that shot, but he hasn’t been hitting it as much.
He goes through this slump at certain portions every season. Im fine as long as he has his jumper in the most important time of the year.
Not going straight up either, tending to lean back even when he doesnt need to
Nice drive by JR
Exactly,he needs to attack from time to time.
Gah. You can’t force the pass inside to wade against a team this long. Good thing Kev rescued that possession.
Stupid a$$ shot
As a Cavs fan, I like seeing Bell on the court.
Same, but he’s a playable defefensive rookie big…wish the Cavs had one…
Kevin Love is extremely playable against the Dubs… especially if they’re gonna use Jordan Bell on him…

Chris Webber just cracks himself up… nobody else tho…
Barf: that Kobe commercial.
WTF was LeBron doing at midcourt on Klay there? Take a foul and stop the break.
Ok, so the strategy on D is pretty clear: get back once in a while and hope GS misses shots.
Winning strategy!
God, I hate Chris webber.
No half court foul on KD?
Cavs not getting memo that warriors like to run haha
Beautiful Dunk!!
IT TO LBJ!
Klay looking like one of his 50 point games so far…
Yup
Yeah… Bell can’t guard LeBron…
I don’t know why you wouldn’t grab klay as you’re flying by and he’s not shooting. Make it a foul on the floor. Kev wants a flagrant btw.
Maybe we need Shump afterall for defense, Smh Can’t keep sucking at defense like this. No answers..
Jordan Bell fell for it…

So, hoping for a Silver Linings Playbook from Lue tonight?
What I see is the Warriors tooling with the Cavs. Jordan Bell looking like an all-star right now.
As he fouls Kevin Love for a 3-point play lol Kevin bleeding from his head
How so? Dude has done nothing other than bit on a fake…
Love has scored 8 on Bell
Surprised lebron isn’t driving already to see if refs will call fouls on Durant
Getting beat on dribble drive and PNR – Thompson with a hot start
Golden state abusing Thomas now.
Well that sucks

It’d be kinda nice to trade Kay Felder for Jordan Bell, huh…?
Cavs should invite d league team and have those guys pass like warriors….cavs can’t keep up at all
K Love just missing too much at the hoop
GSW capitalizing on missed threes by Cavs…
Cavs not going to be able to hide IT on Thompson…
Well, maybe they can literally hide him…hard to see him next to Klay…
Exactly,Klay will shoot over him every single time he gets the opportunity.
I wish Love would dunk…
Or finish with the left hand…
Good energy at least… feels like they’re intent on competing…
Let’s hope they compete for 48 minutes.
Can someone stop the game now and give the W to the Cavs lol.

Best start this team has had in awhile from everyone…now they gotta keep it up
Great start. Ball movement is good and the shots are falling. Keep it going guys.

He can at least defend KD decently…that’s enough against this team…
Well, that was a fun start! A couple real nice plays by Thomas so far.
Nice start, anyway…Curry hasn’t tried to do anything yet, though…
Very good ball movement to start !

IT to Love!
Nice try Jordan Bell…
Gee Weber, I don’t remember Kyrie passing the ball that much to JR

Alley Ooop!
Pretty decent start…
My only request is that I won’t delete this game on DVR,
Interesting choice by Kerr to start Bell…
IT!
That’s the first tip they’ve won in a some time…
Is Jose Calderon lifting or he almost as tall as Kevin Love?
Argh. Webber.
New intro video…

I have very low expectations. But a loss, no better how bad, means nothing as the Cavs work to incorporate IT.
I hate to say this, but I agree with Kenny Smith.
I am being kind/ optimistic with that prediction —-prove us all wrong evil
like Jason has already posted —-GREAT night for the nets pick—so even if we lose –it has been somewhat of a successful night —- I am not as optimistic as you are evil—-do believe the cavs will be more focused / ready to play ALL 4 QTRS —still think the dubs prevail—–117–103
If everyone plays for the Dubs, no way do I see Cavs keeping them under 125…
Posted in the Mark Neal post that it could be MLK massacre 2.0. Literally forgot they got blown out again last year. Think I excised that from my brain. I am not optimistic about breaking the streak.
Can the Cavs keep their MLK day streak going?
First ?♂️?♂️
At this point I’m just wondering how long will I last watching tonight’s game lol.
With IT not at a 100% yet and the Cavs struggling on defense the way they have been doing up late I might go to sleep early.
Just wish the Cavs can give a good defensive effort in front of their fans at the Q.
Go Cavs!
If the game goes like the last two, I’m not making it past halftime.
Me too lol. Maybe not even past the first quarter.
