Podcap: Spurs 114, Cavs 102 (Approaching Critical Depth)
2018-01-24https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/episode-157-approaching-critical-depth
LeBron hits the 30K points mark as the Cavs continue to descend to the hull integrity critical depth. We’re standing in six inches of water, there’s a radiation leak in the engine room, someone’s dog took a had an accident in the cafeteria and when some Seaman tried scooping it up and flushing it down the toilet it just clogged…
We talked about the game, Isaiah Thomas, whether Ty Lue is trying to get fired, George Hill, potential Trades, Woj the ultimate Cavalier troll, and how the only thing with a lower production value than the Cavs on court play was the Subnautica Live Stream event today.
List above, on SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts or Google Play. Beware the klaxon. Stay safe out there.
The Q Transformation project still plans to continue. So I don’t think it matters if Gilbert sells the team or not.
would be interesting to see what DE-R-“AINGED “–would give up for IT right now—–might get the custodian and a bag of popcorn —man did we get taken !!!
IT was largely salary matching component on an KI for Net’s Pick trade?
He was a huge piece. The cavs wanted to publicly be able to say they were getting an all star back.
Lowe Post: “They could end up trading half this roster”. Well if any roster deserved it….
so true phil—so true …AND SAD !!!
So what’s new this morning in Days of Our Cavs / As the Cavs Turn / The Cavs and the Restless?
Would anything be more fun than upsetting the Celtics as the 8 seed?
The ultimate plot twist! Unless we learn the Kyrie trade was all a dream sequence.
I would suggest All My Children…..that soap aired for 40 years, which it seems is as long as the Cavs drama continues. LeBron shows his acting chops by playing the Susan Lucci role of Erika Kane…..the often scheming and devious anchor of the show. My wife loved AMC.
i would be stunned if Hill is ONLY trade being made for Cavs, have to imagine other moves are on the way, crazy stuff has happened in this league, not saying Cavs would get top tier players in exchange but would not be surprised if major moves were made and its different team post 2/8/18.
President Brad Stevens is the no tie wearing business casual stud.
Love to hear the words ‘Terry Rozier will check back in for Boston’
I think the Cavs should trade for Dwight Howard and Joe Johnson… so they can field almost half of the EC All Star Squad from 2011… //s
Dwight sucks obviously, but does brooke Lopez meet the criteria for a big man who could help our d AND our offense at the same time? I know this is unrelated to your sarcasm, but I dont have a good feel for what makes sense anymore. Like Tom said, crowder should have been a perfect fit but is apparently a tool and also had his best year last year. Doesnt Lopez make sense??
Brooke or Robin would be decent gets.
http://memecrunch.com/meme/6YQA9/none-of-this-makes-any-sense/image.jpg
(Scotch, if it wasn’t clear, the meme is aimed at where the team is at, not at your comment.)
Dwyane Dedmon. The Lopez. Brothers are just too slow.
Derrick Favors?
Trade Kevin Love. Mentally and emotionally, he’s toast here. He’s the only tradeable piece with any value.
—Can we get Portland’s McCollum and Nurkic for Love and someone?
Give Jeff Green an opportunity to play his game and see if anything comes of it.
Play Calderon and Frye more.
Release JR & Rose.
Trade Crowder for some other team’s talented malcontent.
TT off the bench. Trade after the season.
** Lebron should coach the team (or Jason Kidd?) **
-> Don’t trade the pick.
Trade IT for another player on an expiring contract (that we can re-sign).
. . . or, have him come off the bench and tell him he’s out of the game for good after his 10th shot. Tell him his job is to create for Korver, Frye, and Green.
Give anybody that plays defense the most playing time. Immediately sit anybody that plays lazy defense.
Jose Calderon is the only player the Cavs have that makes the players around him better when he is on the floor.
Green has kind of reverted to being Jeff Green recently…to get McCollum, I’m guessing it would need to be Love and another big asset…at least…
He has?
So, realistically speaking, is there any really good coach that WANTS to coach LeBron? Carlisle, Pop, maybe Budenholzier, and whoever else folks consider to be really good to great coaches…does any one of them really want that? Pretty much since like brown, its been rookies or near rookies coaching LeBron. The longest tenured coach he has had was mike brown in 2009-2010. LeBron is two players, the coach’s dream for his swiss army knife game, and the coach’s nightmare for his seeming inability to play within a system. In Miami there was pat Riley to back up Spo, and that… Read more »
Thats maybe too much devil’s advocate.
Luke Walton fits the bill.
I dont consider luke walton in the top tier of coaches yet, seeing as his claim to it is that he guided a championship team to continue winning, but he has a good start.
Great Cleveland moment of the day…

Ironic Tweet of the day…

Hopefully Kevin doesn’t have any migraines during the AS game.
KLove is IT’s “guy” the same way Brutus was Julius Caesar’s guy. The Shakespearean update spoken by Kev should be, “Et tu, Isiah.” Too late for sucking up IT given what you said in the closed door, and maybe even as the mole.
They have known each other since they were teenagers so I wouldn’t read too much into the tension
Windhorst on the Lowe Post pretty much lived up to expectations…
Can you provide the cliff notes?
I’d listen to it…one of his points was Lebron keeps going back to last summer, when he felt the Cavs could have gotten Paul George…and he looks now at IT and Crowder and a draft pick that he doesn’t GAS about…and I’m ticked about that, too, although it’s hard to say for sure that Paul George was really on the way, or if it was just never happening… They both talked about how horrendous the Cavs starting 5 have been, and Windhorst opined that it’s not realistic, but teams should send a clearly hampered player like IT trying to return… Read more »
Nice, thanks for sharing.
Was just listening again to refresh myself, and the point was Lebron felt that the Cavs could have had George and Bledsoe (whether that is accurate or not), and to compound that, the Cavs could have backed out of the Celtic deal once the doctors weighed in on IT’s hip…I am totally with him here…I think the Cavs should have told Ainge to shove it when that news came out. He also talked about how dispirited Lebron was when Lue threw that terrible starting unit back in the Spurs game in the 4th when it was still within reach. I… Read more »
Yeah, I think he’s kind of given up with this franchise. I don’t blame him at all as I also agree with how bad those trades were in the summer.
Another eye opener is Windhourst said – and he even prefaced it with ‘I can’t believe I am saying this’ – that Calderon should start over IT at this point.
I think in the finals Lue will have more authority to play the players who get results but now he has to find out what the Cavs have and give the big names their opportunity.
Cjef – unfortunately Lue hasn’t shown that he will deviate much from his predetermined rotations. The fact he didn’t try the wildcat rotation during last year’s finals tells me so. He’s a horrible coach and should be fired.
Yeah, seeming more and more like he leaves next year. Doesn’t matter what kind of cap space a team has. He wants to go somewhere, a team will find cap space to sign him. Could see him ending up in Houston or San Antonio.
And what trades would you have made?
You aren’t asking me, but I would have traded with PHX or MKE. I would have preferred PHX to send Irving to a terrible team.
Most of the bad trades were forced by Kyrie and LeBron.
Again, Kyrie had no leverage. I would not have made that deal with the Celtics. I would have demanded much more. Otherwise Kyrie is still a Cav.
The Gilbert rumor is plausible, but Stephen A. as the origin based on no sources sounds a lot like speculation.
Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised, but I just assume anything SAS blurts out is some garbage rumor he heard from some moron.
If I was Dan Gilbert I would sell. Shells out more money in luxury tax than anyone and just gets crapped on / gets to watch a team that hasn’t given a crap about the regular season since 2010 and provides stomach churning drama every single year.
He got to the top of the professional sports mountain – might be time to move on.
Then he better sell within the next couple months before 70% of the value of his franchise walks out the door. No way will the cavs be valued at 1.2 billion if Lebron leaves. Lebron is the value. If he leaves that value will plummet, especially now that Kyrie is gone. It is the same thing that happened when he came back when all of a sudden valuations skyrocketed for the cavs that summer, except this time it will happen in reverse.
I know Durant wants to own an NBA team a season well. I’m sure LeBron wants to beat him to the punch.
LeBron might pull it off.
Durant? He will wind up owning a car wash after he gets ripped off on every deal he tries.
Does Jordan actually own the Hornets? Or, is he a minority owner / frontman?

IF GILBERT SELLS THE CAVS—DOES THIS AFFECT THE MODERNIZATION OF THE ‘Q”—–WHAT WILL BE THE NEW NAME
The Cavs would be moving to Akron and share the stadium with the Rubber Ducks.
Cavs 3PT%,
Lue’s V: IT 28%, JR 33.8%, LBJ 36.2%, JC 32.4%, Love 39.9%.
Lue’s bench: Rose 20%, Wade 32.3%, Shump 26.9%, Korver 43%, Green 32.2%, TT = no attempts.
Lue’s out of rotation: Calderon 44.8%, Osman 35.7%, Frye 34.9%, Zizic no attempts; Holland 50%, Perrantes no attempts.
The Cavs’ analytics department has been locked in the basement of the Q, never to be heard from again.
FWIW, Nets update, wins:
14 = Kings, Magic, Hawks
16 = Mavs
17 = Suns, Grizzlies
18 = Nets, Bulls, Lakers
19 = Jazz, Hornets
Tonight:
Pels at Hornets
Jazz at Pistons
Suns at Pacers
Bulls at 76ers
Raptors at Hawks
Rockets at Mavs
Spurs at Grizzlies
I’d rate Cavs players like this:
1) Want them to stay: Love, LeBron, Korver, Green, Frye, Cedi, Calderon.
2) Want them to go: Lue, IT, Crowder, Shump
3) Meh: JR, Wade, TT, Zizic, Rose
I like this list. IMO you can break down Cavs players this year into Good / OK, Kinda Sucks, or Sucks.
Good / OK: Love, LeBron, Korver, Green, Frye, Osman, Calderon, Wade
Kinda Sucks: Crowder, Smith
Sucks: Thomas, Shumpert, Thompson, Rose, Coach Lue
Can’t win when you give lots of minutes to guys that suck. Any trade where we can remove sucky players and get good or OK players is a must
Well if Gilbert is selling the team then I would think IT is gone after this season.
If IT is bad-rapping Love, we should try to deal him. How much does Kemba make?
12 mill per
IT & Crowder for Kemba.
I would
Wishful thinking. We would have to give up more than that for Walker, though clearly last year was a bit of a career year as far as shooting/scoring efficiency.
Still he would be far better than a guy who shouldn’t even be in the league at this point. I just don’t think Charlotte does it without maybe taking back a bad contract and probably the cavs first rounder.

Please god
per real gm —dan gilbert has interest in selling the cavs ( yeah he wants out too ) there you go Lebron be OWNER/ (FIRE TY–BE COACH / BE PLAYER
Not sure if LeBron would be a good owner or not?!?!
Actually LeBron is notoriously cheap so I don’t think he’d be a good owner.
He’d be like Michael Jordan (also cheap) most likely…
It would be great if Gilbert is out. While he deserves credit for a willingness to spend, he also failed to create a stable organization. Never re-hired a GM. Coaching hires not so good.
Pretty much what Jason said.
count me in with your “minority “—won’t go as far as I “love ” him but also believe he has taken a “bum ” rap that is not entirely his fault—-he does have the 2nd highest payroll –THAT PRESENTLY IS NOT PRODUCING —has tried to accommodate every “LeBron wish “—-signing of T.T. / SWISH / SHUMP bringing on wade etc.—as far as the griff thing who really knows what transpired there and I now do believe Chauncey saw “THIS TRAIN WRECK ” coming and that he would probably have to fire his good buddy ty —-wanted NO part of it
Proudly in the minority here: I LOVE Dan Gilbert, or at least the version of Dan Gilbert I get to see. Would love to have a get off my lawn segment with him on a podcast.
I was fine with Gilbert as owner until he got involved in the front office last summer. He didn’t want to keep Griffin for whatever reasons, probably some combination of too expensive, was getting too much credit in his view, personal friction, and not having some qualified candidate ready to step in. All in the most critical part of the offseason. I personally believe Gilbert thinks a good front office is overrated – similar to how Marge Schott gutted the Reds scouts because all they did was ‘watch games’. This is exactly why the Cavs organization was seen as a… Read more »
It’s hard to totally love someone who created such chaos at the absolutely wrong time with the trade deadline looming, and Irving situation developing. That is really inexcusable
You also love Trump don’t you? and hate Obama…
and look at the players pop has drafted / or whatever —–not big name players —-but UNLIKE THE COACH OF THE CAVS ( GAD MAKES ME SICK EVERYTIME I MENTION THAT)—-he / the spurs have TRUST / DEVELOP their players unlike cedi / ante WASTING AWAY —–if we get hill( and get rid of shump ) –fine —but he will not ” move the needle ” that much to make us contenders –plus he is how old and what is his contract—–I stick to my guns BLOW IT UP –rather see them trade for solid young players / draft picks
If we get Hill and send JR, IT, and TT to the bench, things can recover quickly. That is assuming LBJ and KL are not going to be worn out all year from going to the finals three years in a row. Cavs can start Hill, James, Love, Green, and let Jose and Rose and/or Wade alternate at PG. Let Crowder, Korver, Cedi, and Frye be the core of the second unit, maybe with Wade, maybe with TT. If IT is badrapping Love, he is worse than the zero production he is putting up on the floor, he is cancer.… Read more »
Lakers have some players they are trying to unload, they might take IT.
I believe even a bigger reason to fire Ty Lue than his abysmal rotations is the total deterioration of the defense over the last two years. Lue obviously can’t instill the right defensive mindset with this team given how much more statistically worse they have gotten. Their isn’t even a switch to flip anymore as it’s ripped off the proverbial wall. As debated on the podcast, I don’t think Lue is trying to get himself fired. Lue’s horrific decisions and poor leadership may lead to that outcome anyway……and I sure hope it does. Last amazing point from Windy’s appearance on… Read more »

Keeping it classy, Rizzo. What a moron.
Who’s Tony Rizzo?
I was going to ask that too.
He’s a local Cleveland sports radio host. Never thought much of him my self.
Ha, I was being sarcastic. I listened to him a few times and all I got from it was a shrilling headache. Verbal diarrhea.
Just when you thought things could not get worse, ….
not sure what this is in refrrnce to?
The Cavs, each new day. The fighting at meetings in particular.
https://twitter.com/kevinlove/status/956236117052968963
I refuse to read anything into that. Obviously he has been treated like garbage. It doesn’t mean he wants out.
Oh I didn’t read anything into it. They grew up together.
Oh didn’t know that.
Love played Little League with Klay, and travel basketball with IT. And his uncle was in the Beachboys.
https://twitter.com/theJay_Show/status/956231834156916737
Shannon Sharpe just goes OFF on IT
Yeah, he pretty well summed up the cavs personnel issues. I am done with the IT experiment. He only makes something like 6-7 million and is in the last year of his deal. Cut him. He is one of the few players in the history of the nba that actually makes his team worse than if they were playing four on five. That is how bad he is. At this point he would be an abysmal d league player because of his defense and inability to score efficiently. Cut Crowder too if the guy moans about losing his little napoleon… Read more »
wow – hes really well educated on the cavs actually – only spot he missed was coach lue
Solid heated take by Sharpe. I never watch this show since I absolutely loath Bayless, so thx for posting.
this is awesome

Windhorst believes that LeBron is so dispirited that it’s affecting his play now. Windy actually said he believes James chose not to try last night and take over the game, when LeBron came back in the 4th quarter. Also, Windy called Lue’s decision to bring back IT, JR and Crowder mid fourth quarter a dereliction of duty. I missed seeing Crowder walk over Kevin Love, when Love was on the ground, and that is a stunning disrespect of a teammate. Crowder and IT are both punks.
Gilbert looks like a dope, although at the time I actually agreed with him (so I’m a dope too), for calling out the Pacers GM for the deal he got for PG. Looks like the Pacers know what they’re doing.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/955950907061096450?s=17
Oladipo is on a better team and is the main ball handler, yes he was that too in orlando but they sucked, and of course in OKC Westbrook didn’t care about him. just think its great fit for him and also think pacers are playing well as a TEAM, something our local team knows nothing about haha
I’ve always been a fan of Oladipo. I wanted the Cavs to take him over Bennett.
The Cavs would have ruined him as bad, if not worse, as Orlando did.
I know.
I think the lesson of the season is NEVER MAKE A DEAL WITH DANNY (AINGE)!
PREACH IT RAFFY22—PREACH IT—RIGHT THERE WITH YOU !!!——–have never seen a team so disjointed / no offensive / defensive schemes whatsoever —just hope LeBron and 3 pt shooting can get us a “w”–total B.S !!
Ha. Thanks dude. And I’m with you on trading Love. He deserves better than this dumpster fire.
DID NOT watch last night’s game ( probably will tune out for a long time —GARBAGE ) did see on ESPN when love got knocked down ch”CRAWDER —walked right over him –didn’t help him get up– WTF —-I say BUILD around LOVE –trade the rest of the garbage ( save cedi / korver / ante/ draft picks )—-that ain’t going to happen—so for his sake TRADE LOVE release him from this hell hole ——and yes flatliner ky demanded a trade –but it is going to hurt like hell watching him display his talents / carve out a HOF career as… Read more »
No cut Crowder and IT. Good riddance to the Boston trash.
I’ve tried to stay composed about this for years, but I can’t take it any more. Lue sucks. He sucks balls. He sucked balls last year when he couldn’t implement anything that remotely resembled a fluid offense and couldn’t find a way to make the team function without Lebron. Last year’s team was an all timer and he pissed away the regular season and couldn’t come up with anything remotely innovative to counter the Warriors in last years finals. And he continues to suck balls this year with his continued failure to set up coherent lineups and rotations. He sucks.… Read more »
Love should lock IT into his locker at halftime, and maybe Lue can win a game, as he’s forced to use Calderone.
?????
Just listened to the podcast at work. I have always been skeptical about Lue, but I totally forgot about those horrible lineups in the finals. They kind of won in spite of a lot of his decisions, which kind of makes LBJ even more amazing. I have given Lue a lot of leeway and he does one thing very well, which is drawing up plays after timeouts. However, he really is not a good coach. His minutes and rotations have always been bonkers. His motivational skills and control of the team are basically nonexistent at this point. He literally makes… Read more »
Ordinarily I wouldn’t support a firing mid-season. Just like I didn’t want Blatt fired. But Lue is abysmal. Absolutely horrible decisions. He does things that have zero excuse. I still will never forget him not even TRYING, not attempting for a single minute, the Wildcat lineup over the course of a five game series…
Yeah, I was thinking earlier this year that some of his lineups were from pressure by the FO or LBJ, but you are right. His decision making has been bonkers for his whole tenure. I think the championship made me forget a lot of the stuff talked about in the podcast.
Good thing we had our CtPodcast sound board to splice in previous rants of mine
I have been ‘meh’ on him as a coach, not great, not awful, but sure looks like he’s lost this team. According to all the Lue Truthers back in the day, that’s why Blatt needed fired.

Great rant on Lue by Tom.
While I have presented alternative lineups on some threads, and also some radical trades, I think the main item is the energy and effort with this team. Honestly, Lue’s changes shouldn’t be that hard; so I will give him free advice (if he reads this blog anyways. ps he should!) – Park JR and TT on end of bench and make them DNPs if necessary – Start Calderon Korver and Frye ….have starting unit run fast paced offense with crisp passing and cuts and some spread the floor for Lebron drives – Bench unit includes IT, Wade, Cedi, Green, with… Read more »
They should try this until it definitely doesn’t work. (I think it would work)
Right there with ya, Leo.
Unfortunately, I think it ends up being what they discuss on the pod. Move Crowder to the bench and TT back in…
I think Lue is on his way out if that is the case. Can’t see that turning this team around.
It won’t do a thing. In fact, I bet the lineup is just as bad. It will be so cramped because four of the five players can’t hit a three.
Loved the “Summer of Corby” shout out!
Loved the line “Trump-hand Thompson.” ?
From John B on yesterday’s LT: “That was the best catch I have ever seen TT make with his Trump hands. Too bad it only led to a foul”
I’m with Tom — Lue is who I thought he was. I think he’s going to go, because the Cavs look like a trainwreck now.
I hope K-Love gets traded for his sake. Get him out of this sh*thole situation.
It sounds like the deal of Frye and Shump for Hill won’t cost the Cavs a first round pick. So that’s good news. Maybe they can use it to grab a big.
And so he stays. Monday’s blowout meeting is well-documented by now. It started with Love as the target before escalating into something more. Dwyane Wade and Isaiah Thomas were the instigators, multiple sources with knowledge of the meeting told The Athletic. From there, it escalated to everyone else and an airing of the grievances. (Lloyd)
Wade, whatever. Where the hell does IT get off, though? You’ve barely played for this team, and you suck, dude.

Van Gundy hasn’t played Marjanovic the last two games and as far as I can tell it’s just because – no injury report. What can we offer to get that guy here? I think him playing on the second unit with Wade and KK will help tremendously. Besides the firing Lue, trading Shump, JR, TT and IT of course.
Boban is actually ridiculously efficient on offense as you would expect with his height and soft touch. He is fun. It’s just his perimeter defence that is the problem.
I was just about to post this…. pretty sad.
This cracked me up.

Any way to read this for free anywhere?’
I think you can get a week free. Otherwise it’s $3.33 a month, which isn’t bad. I cancelled my ESPN Insider account, and went with this instead. Also, it’s not so ridiculous like ESPN Cleveland charging $8.50 a month to listen to Jobee’s commercials, and Rizzo playing blackjack with Hammer, while he threatens to mow people down with his car at an 0-16 parade.
Speaking of trades, after playing around with the NBA trade machine:
Cavs get:
Eric Bledsoe
M Kidd-Gilchrist
Delly
Bucks get:
Kemba Walker
JR Smith
Shump
Hornets get:
IT
J Parker
D-Rose
Cavs + Bucks picks
One can dream
I think the only way the Cavs FO can fix this team is to trade like half of the roster and bring in a new coach that would demand the best out of every player in the roster. Another thing to me, is that the people keep talking about when the Cavs went 18-1 yes they were playing better basketball but to be honest the majority of the teams they faced during that stretch were non playoffs team. As soon as they began to face tougher teams they began to break even after IT joined the team. And I would… Read more »
The other scary thing about 18-1 was lbj was spitting hot fire durinf that stretch. now that his jumper is broken , and teams are clogging the paint because of TT, JR et al its like impossible for our starting offense to function
