Recap: Cavs 104, Pacers 100 (Or, The Slow Burn)
2018-04-23After 12 minutes of play, the Cavs led by six points. After 16 minutes of play, they led by 16 points. Then the typical Cavalier bleeding started. After 24 minutes, they led by 10. After 29 minutes, they led by five. After 36 minutes, the Wine & Gold no longer had a lead. And, after 42 minutes they were down by one. The Cavs have been treating their leads like some form of bonus armor they’re picking up during games. They’re disposable. They’re something that’s nice to have, but not really necessary.
Tonight, that mindset didn’t burn them. Cleveland managed to hold the Pacers to just eight points in the final six minutes of action while scoring 13 of their own behind a Kyle Korver All-Star level finish. Korver began the night missing four open looks from 3-land. He then finished 4-5 on his final 3s to finish with 18 points.
In the fourth, Korver sealed the game for Cleveland. With 3:48 left, and the Cavs down down two, he ran to the corner in transition and Kevin Love found him for a 3 to grab a 94-93 lead. With 2:29 left, Korver came off a Love off-ball screen to drain another 3 to extend the lead further, 99-95. With the gravity Korver was commanding, LeBron was able to take the ball to the rack one-on-one against Bojan Bogdanovic on the next offensive production (which it most be noted, was proceeded by the Cavs forcing a 24 second violation). No Indiana players wanted to help towards the paint when they thought their assignment might be setting a screen to break Korver free.
Finally, Korver hit two free throws with 14 seconds left to put the Cavs up six to come out with a win.
The Cavs set the grounds for this win early on. In the first quarter, they came out playing very tight defense holding the Pacers to just 24 points, which would have been even less if Lance Stephenson didn’t grab five points and Victor Oladipo didn’t get a cheap jump shot foul against J.R. Smith in the final two minutes.
The Wine & Gold offense looked stagnant to start. Guys weren’t moving, and a lot of the shots were of the LeBron dribbles and whips a pass into a shot variety. The Cavs managed to get up 11 3s though, despite J.R. hitting the only 3 the Cavs made. The Cavs weren’t giving up on the long ball and the supporting play helped them to do that. They grabbed four points off forced turnovers and LeBron put in 11 of his 32 points in behind some monster Tristan Thompson screens. J.R. put up a sixty footer to end the quarter, 30-24.

In the second quarter, Tyronn Lue trotted out Jordan Clarkson, James, Larry Nance Jr., Jeff Green and Rodney Hood. It was a lineup that shouldn’t have worked considering none of those guys can drain 3s. They made it work though by ratcheting the defense up and getting out in transition. On the first Pacer’s possession Nance grabbed a steal and was ultimately fouled on a fast break dunk attempt. The next play Nance sprinted the floor for a James TD pass dunk. Lance even played chess in the pick and roll with LeBron after holding his roll the perfect amount of time for James to find him with ease.

Of course LeBron did his own damage too. He made sure Bojan knew he couldn’t cover the King.

Jordan Clarkson also helped from the bench putting up ten of his own in the quarter. He finished the evening with 12 points, all of which came in the first half. Each shot he took in the quarter was more absurd and lucky than the last, but sometimes that’s what a sixth man does. At one point the Cavs were up by sixteen, but the Pacers made a run pushing the pace and hitting open 3-pointers. The Clarkson scoring burst allowed LeBron to stay fresh and score the Cavs final eight in the quarter pounding the ball to the rack and hitting four freebies to not let the lead disappear.
The Cavs started the third up ten, but the Pacers ripped off 10-2 to start. Kevin Love, who had previously played just a few minutes due to picking up two early fouls, wasn’t engaged. He kept ending up in no mans land on defense. He wasn’t trapping and he wasn’t deterring penetration. Myles Turner loved it, getting five of the first points during the run with a 3 and a layup. He finished the night with 17 points on 7-9 shooting to go with three boards.
Lue stuck with Love despite his limitations and ineffectiveness. On two separate occasions in the quarter, Love decided to just not run down the floor and Domantas Sabonis got four easy points because of that. If it wasn’t for the Cavs hitting four of their 12 3s, they could have been in trouble. Outside of the four 3s, the Cavs only other buckets were two tip backs Love had. They couldn’t create quality looks and didn’t score the final 2:46. They led by just two heading into the fourth, 80-78.
Both teams battled during the fourth trading baskets until the six minute mark when Korver took over. Jeff Green had nice sequence where he made a hook shot, got a block, and hit a 3. Other than that, no Cavs really shined.
Gripes
- Tonight, the Cavs gave up another large lead. At one point the team is going to need to stop blowing these leads. It was quirky during the regular season, now it’s downright crippling. It caught up with them in game 3 . Tonight, they got lucky.
- Kevin Love scored five points and grabbed 11 boards and was not engaged. He picked up two early fouls and had to sit. That’s not easy, but he pouted at points in the game when he didn’t get calls, and he wasn’t getting back on defense. The Cavs need more from him in all areas of his game right now.
- Lue shouldn’t have played Kevin so much tonight. He had 29 minutes and Nance and TT had just 22 combined minutes. TT was a +7 and got just seven minutes. He was setting very hard screens and contributed more in a basketball sense than his one rebound and steal showed. Nance had very good chemistry with James setting screens. He had two steals, three boards, and six points.
- The Cavs should consider not trapping and doubling as much. They might even want to spring that stuff on guys other than Victor Oladipo. At a certain point, Indiana knew what was coming. They went 12-33 from deep. They usually hit nine per game which is near the bottom of the league.
Hypes
LeBron James is amazing. 46 minutes, 32 points 11 rebounds, 7 dimes, 2 blocks, 1 turnover. On is 14th freaking season!
— HoopsDogg (@oldseaminer) April 23, 2018
- LeBron had another awesome game. He really steadied the Cavs in the second quarter with his scoring at the end. And Nate, it’s Bron’s 15th season.
- That burst was made possible by Jordan Clarkson scoring 10 points. The Cavs need their bench to continue having games like this. LeBron just needs a little help. Korver’s 18 helped the King keep the game winnable in the fourth. Jeff Green’s five in the fourth also helped.
- If Kevin Love can return to form, these games won’t be as close. The Cavs can grind games out with Love and James performing well. When Love disappears, the bench has to step up. The blueprint for blowout wins is here. They just need a game with a few bench standouts and Love dropping fire from deep.
- The defense tonight shut down Victor Oladipo. The trap lets 3s drop, but Vic had 17 points on 5-20 shooting, Darren Collison struggled too getting 12 points on 5-12 shooting. They combined for 13 assists though. Bojan and Sabonis combined for 29 on 13-25 shooting. These were the outlet guys on traps. The Cavs can live with that line.
- With nine seconds left in the game, Jeff Green secured a rebound and Lance Stephenson wrapped the ball up above Green’s head. The problem was he also had part of Green’s neck and head grabbed too. He then body slammed Green to the ground. The refs took quite a bit to figure out that this was a foul, but they did. So, good for them.
- Hopefully, this will be the final move that Lance pulls. He baited LeBron into a technical during the game by jawing at him. The refs need to tame Lance. He isn’t a basketball player. He’s a nuisance.

The Cavs are back home Wednesday and will hold their home court advantage with a win.
I thought the Cavs offense looked bad and then I started watching this bucks Celtics game… The bucks are terrible at offense…
Yeesh they can’t shoot
“HOME RUN DERBY ” TOMLIN —AT IT AGAIN—4 HR’S / 3 INNINGS —HE NEEDS TO GO TO BULLPEN AND BE DONE AS A STARTER
He probably just needs to be done period. Give Merritt a chance. Can’t do any worse than Tomlin.
a “little ” late—but thank you Jason for the record —–that is a 54/ 55 win season extended out —-most people can live with that
Russell Westbrook’s incident under review and possible game 5 suspension.
Lol no way he gets suspended
So start Jose at point or go for LeBron at point with JR, KK, Love and TT/Green.
?
The latter…. Calderon paired with Clarkson.
If Hill is iffy, he needs to sit for game 5. Back issues can linger. Get him right. We are not in desperation mode yet. The role olayers should play a bit better at home.
Jose, JR, Korver, James, Love.
Bench: Clarkson, Hood, Green, Nance.
Spot: Cedi, TT, Perk (knock someone on their butt).
KLOVE/ AN OREGON GUY——–CJ MCALLUM AN OHIO GUY —-WOULD YOU TRADE THEM STARIGHT UP
No. I would not.
Yes I would.
Sure but Portland never would. Kyle is 37.
You’d be as likely to trade him for Sir CC. #NeverTradeMoondogg
? I think he means Love, not Korver
HILL QUESTIONABLE FOR GAME # 5—-HOW BAD IS HIS BACK——-DOES ANYBODY HAVE THE CAVS RECORD (INCLUDING THE PLAYOFFS )—SINCE THE ALL STAR TRADE — (DISCOUNT THAT LAST LOSS TO THE KNICKS )—–JUST CURIOUS
18-9. Not counting the Finale or the Hawks/T-Wolves games before the new guys arrived.
With Love, Hill, & Korver all missing sizeable chunks and Nance & Hood smaller ones.
if any other player put up the numbers LeBron did in game #2 —-the media would be ‘hyping ” how great a performance that was —WTF —-GIMME A BREAK !!!!

Middleton would be awesome with Lebron. For this year, I would be pretty happy with Dragic and Winslow, too.
That Milwaukee deal, if true, is one of the great what ifs. Brogdon and Middleton would have been a perfect combo for this team.
Let us see what happens in the lotto (or with that pick) before we judge.
And I do like Brogdon & Middleton a lot. You get two starters there. Two way guys.
If we stay at 8, it looks like Porter, Bamba, Young, or Carter.
If we drop, throw in Sexton or Mikal Bridges.
Or we could trade the pick for a vet.
Ug I just threw up in my mouth a little. Brogdon and Middleton would be amazing on our team. The only thing I could see if that people would have been up in arms about creating a Kyrie/Giannis combo. Last summer we were all freaked out about the Bucks.
Carmelo is absolutely killing the Thunder. Can’t hit an open shot to save his life. His effectiveness in a nutshell – near the end of the third lets Crowder drive right by him for a layup then he tries to get it back on the other end but commits an offensive foul. He’s terrible.
Unless coming off the bench, Carmelo will never win a ring.
So the talking heads this morning were insinuating that LeBron must have some type of injury (procured during game 2) and that’s why he has been on a decline – play wise.
I don’t think he’s hurt. I think he’s a 34(?) year old man playing 44+ minutes a game, with high physicality targeted against him.
I only wish Lue would do the same against Dipo and Bog.
What decline?
His second half numbers supposedly plummet, all across the board. Also his overall performance/control of the offense has been pedestrian – after game 2.
This was on 92.3 this morning. I think it’s just exhaustion and a physical Bogdanovic/Stephenson.
This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
I’m just the messenger here ;)
I think LeBron slows on the second half due to fatigue, nothing else. It comes down to Lue’s lack of managing the game flow.
The two radio heads were requesting that if LeBron was hurt, which Ken Carman said he thought he is, it would benefit him(LeBron) to say so and get it out in the open and hopefully stat getting calls in his favor.
I hate sports radio. I don’t even know why I bother.
I love the CtB podcasts ;)
I don’t have the stats, but the eye test clearly shows me(all of us?) that LeBron has been slowing down on the second halves. I can’t be the only one to notice it.
The radio heads were insinuating, with one (KC) saying he truly believed, there LeBron must have some type of lower back injury. According to him, that’s the most logical explanation after his decline from game 2.
Again, I’m just the messenger here.
Game 3 Second Half – 13 points on 5/12 shooting (3/5 from 3), 4 Rebs, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, only 1 turnover
Game 4 Second Half – 9 points on 4/11 shooting, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, only 1 turnover
I don’t buy the eye test (at least to the degree of comparing everyone on the Cavs for tired legs) or the hard stats.
Sure, he’s usually a more efficient shooter, but when your offense looks as garbage as the Cavs’ has, this seems pretty decent.
Ya, I agree with Nate on this one…
Pedestrian!? What game are these idiots watching?
Talking morons.
Game 3: 42 min, 28/12/8/1/1. 6 TO. FG = 10/22 & 3PT = 4/7. 6 TOs ugly. Everything else fine.
Game 4: 46 min, 32/13/7/0/2. FG = 12/22. 3PT = 0/5. 1 TO.
Moron hot take: the guy averaging 44 min and 30/12.5/7.5 on 50% shooting is hurt? Right.

On a related note was just going to call attention to Romney wearing a Rodney Hood jersey while taunting Russ last night and then saw Eli beat me to it, lol
Ok guys I got some bad news. LeBron is definitely going to Philadelphia next year. The Philadelphia Eagles.

I’m surprised that the Pelicans are playing so well.
I’m surprised Rondo is playing so well…Holliday and AD are playing great, but getting Mirotic (who I heartily dislike) and Rondo helping out in a big way is a huge boost…
I would have liked for Mirotic to have ended here. Sucks he went somewhere else.
Rondo playing like he has has been an eye opener. I didn’t think he cared enough to bother anymore.
Rondo was darn good for the Bulls in the POs last year. If he does not get hurt, they beat the Celtics. And IT never goes off in Round 2.
NO traded for Mirotic. He has been brilliant for them. As have Ilyasova & Belinelli in Philly.
Jae Crowder must have forgot Steve Adams was on the floor. He is lucky there were a lot of people in the area:
http://www.nba.com/video/2018/04/24/0041700174-okc-uta-jae-crowder-ejected
How is that an ejection? Seems like it maybe should’ve been a double technical, and Westbrook initiated it!
Andre Roberson’s injury was a low-key, big deal loss for the Thunder. Gotta believe he’d be the primary defender on Mitchell in this series.
I enjoy watching the jazz play—-well coached —great system —-right Rodney
Funny how everyone threw them in the dustbin when Hayward left…they are better now…
I do not think anyone expected Mitchell to be this good. Or Joe Ingles.
What is this well coached thing you speak of?
Russell Westbrook is just a head case and always has been.
Totally agree. His antics/stat-chasing/ball-hoggerey are applauded by his fans WHEN THEY ARE WINNING. Put him on a 35-40 win team (which OKC very well may be next year if PG departs and Melo stays) and suddenly he is no longer worshipped. History of head case players in this league is: Love em to death/applaud their “zest”when team is winning…but act is less tolerable, not quite as “zesty” when team is losing. Lance is same way? Bet Pacers fans love him now…but doubt many Hornets fans are wishing for his services again!
It’s a shame that someone with his athleticism doesn’t have a higher basketball IQ.
After the Pacers lose to the Cavs the Indy fans will wish Lance wasn’t in this series.
Him winning MVP last year was a joke. Third at best behind Kawhi & Harden.
Predictions for tonight’s games? I think Bucks win a close one in best game of the night, 76ers wrap it up relatively easy in a chippy game (with possibility of some actual punches thrown), and Warriors complete the Gentlemen’s sweep in a low-key 97-90ish victory, hugs all around afterwards.
I think you are right about the warriors and the Bucks…I think the heat grab one more before the 76rs triumph. Something about the 76rs is still off…youth doesn’t often translate to early closeouts even if you’re more talented.
I bet the Celtics win…their scrubs seem to hit threes like they’re Steph at home. I would bet Sixers win a close one. Spurs winning would be a shocker. Even if the series was tied, they have been a terrible road team all season. Maybe somewhat close for a half, Dubs open it up in second half.
I’m hoping for a Bucks-76ers series.
I actually hope the Heat win the night, just to extend the series.
Good predictions. I think Boston somehow finds a way at home.
Dang. Jazz are making PG and Russell look ridiculous…like angry kids. I’ve never seen a player of russel’s caliber be so flippant in his response to being beaten. He literally threw a temper tantrum and tried to hurt Rubio. What a funny development.
Rubio = actual PG with high BB IQ.
Russ = ball hogging PG with ego higher than IQ.
OKC went 22 minutes without an assist.
Assuming warriors close it out in 5 and steph isnt back, how much trouble can the pelicans cause for the warriors?
Warriors win in 6 games.
With no steph the whole time?
With no Steph, Warriors could lose (would be a pretty big upset, though)…with Steph, probably 6 games max.
The Cans got playoff Rondo. I anticipate some ejections on both sides. Probably Draymond and Rondo.
Rondo vs Bray will likely be hilarious…
Let us not forget that Rondo and Holiday’s success is against Dame and McCollum, bad defenders.
yes. Holiday, Rondo and Mirotic all will not be able to replicate same against dubs especially if Curry doesn’t come back. Warriors D is better without Curry and have enough fire power to outscore Pelicans. With or without Curry, 6 games since even Curry comes back, he might be slow especially on defensive end.
It’s all on AD…. can he dominate? He should…
Honestly…I’ve never seen a more underrated PG than jrue Holiday…he is a stud on offense and a mega stud on defense. I think the pelicans lose if steph comes back before game 4…but if he cant come back for the series…I dont trust Durant, Thompson and green to win a series. I’m picking pels in 6
He’s important for sure…. but there’s absolutely no equal on GSW for AD.
Maybe they throw another game if Steph gets back for game 1 with a little more time.
Unless series goes to 7 games, 2nd round starts on 28th or 29th. So, the loss in last game and this game doesn’t really help Curry.
Utah has one of the best crowds around.
INGLES WITH SALT IN THE WOUND!!! LOVE IT!!!
Dagger 3 by Mitchell!!!! COLD BLOODED!
33 points…amazing for a rookie…
For real… can’t tell me rookies don’t help in the post-season!
I was so down on Carmelo last year, and I was so right…if I do say so myself…
I think he would’ve been better with LeBron… but IDK how much better.
He is not the type of player you win with today. Not good enough anymore to play the style he plays.
Really happy for Jazz fans that they have Mitchell…amazingly exciting player.
He’s what Boston thought they were getting with Terry Rozier.
Lol, yeah, probably accurate…
Donovan Mitchell with a huge basket to stop OKC’s run.
Westbook’s out of control. Totally in his head…. he’s close to doing something stupid.
Yeah, lot of talking and chippiness in this one…hope something dumb doesn’t happen…
Definitely… seen it from Paul George too early.
Utah is just pants-ing OKC right now…. tempers flaring… this is intense!
Utah is freaking good. Dubs are lucky they didn’t draw them early.
Love their team…. so scrappy and together.
Can’t blame Heyward for joining his college coach, but I think he made a mistake.
Or the Pels.
Utah is a great team, but our Jae Crowder is 1-9 this game, and just bricked an above the break three. He’s remarkably consistent.
Melo, PG, and Westbrook are a combined 1-12 from 3. OKC is toast.
Adams is really good there, but he’d probably be insane in a different situation.
Jae though is getting it done at defensive end – 7 rebs, 3 stls to go with 3 assists. Jae helped Jazz today.
Huge play on defense tonight during their run to blow this lead up. Saved a ball from going out of bounds, and it created a fast break.
Also, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Oladipo has very feminine facial features. He looks like he is a Westworld lady robot or something.
That is probably why Oladipo is a great defender, mystery solved. Pathetic view.
Why even bother repeating it???
It’s trash talk. The key to good trash talking is repetition.
What is this comment?
When the Western conference seedings were finalized, I thought GSW really lucked out and got the easier teams on their side of the bracket. But no team was more impressive in the first round than the Pelicans. Could be a really interesting series if NOP can maintain their level.
Rose is having an awesome game… great to see that… always liked him… too bad he was traded but i guess it’s hard for most players to come here and fit in…. Both Rose and Wade having really solid playoff so far.. far better than any of our players not named Bron… but if they were here, who knows how they would have played…
I wonder if the Cavs advance to the next round if they are going to face a tougher defense than what they have faced against the Pacers? I have too admit that I never expected the Pacers to be this good defensively but then again I never expected the Cavs to improve defensively the way they have.
Pacers are a good “team”, but with the exception of Oladipo, I wouldn’t swap ANY of our starters for the Pacers counterpart. Give me Cavs bench over Pacers bench. I even like Lue over McMillian. Pacers have made 0 adjustments thru series this far and they can’t use the “we’re battling/the lower seed doing what got us here” thing cause they really were separated by what, 3 games or something? Cavs in 6. Game 5 will be a blowout. Love will have a big game. Game 6 Cedi/Ante will get some run as Lue will play it safe to preserve… Read more »
I would swap coaches for sure.
Not me. Nate McMillian hasn’t shown me much. He had a consistent lineup all year with a hands down 2nd or 3rd team All NBA Guard to boot. And he led his team to less wins than the Cavs, a team with NO lineup consistency, new players at the trade deadline, Vet players with multiple back to back to back playoff runs/exhaustion, etc. Plus, Lue was half dead most of the year coughing up blood and guts.
That’s a really long way to say Lue has LeBron
I don’t know. LeBron is the best, but swap him to the Pacers and Oladipo to the Cavs and, roster wise, I still like Cavs chances.
I would take:
1) Dipo over JR
2) Collison over Hill
3) Bogdonovich over Korver (age)
most of the “espn experts ” still not convinced cavs get past the pacers —–stating they still haven’t found a consistent 2nd scorer—-and rotations still are a ” daily toss up “—–think the only way the cavs get past pacers is if LEBRON DOES HIS THING —-WILLS THEM TO WIN ——man back in November / and even after all star trades were made –we were thinking this is the deepest / most talented team we have had / LeBron has been surrounded with —-so much for our expert analysis —-hope yesterdays game– ( and LeBron’s confident big brother hug )–… Read more »
I believe the role players will get a better feeling and get better as the series continues but at the same time I feel that the Pacers physical play has really affected them too.
Is like they are still adapting to the physical play in the playoffs i believe.
On the Step Back pod today, they speculated as to who the Cavs second best player in this series is so far. I think the only candidates are Hill, JR, Korver, and *maybe* Love (mostly for rebounding)…I think I’d say JR, then Hill and Korver tied for third. I have to ding Hill for missing a game. Not too uplifting.
not alot of great teams where an aged jr smith is your second best player. testament to lbj
Korver was awesome yesterday, moving without the ball and hitting those two clutch 3s It is like 2006 all over again with Mo Williams as 2nd best player that time or recently as 2015 finals without Kyrie.
Our second best player is energy-conserving Lebron. Our third best player is disengaged Lebron. Our fourth best player is Healthy Kevin Love. We have no fifth best player.
Agree with some of you re: Love. He gets a pass for lackluster play. He’s hurt, he’s not getting calls, and he’s playing out of position. If Lue had even 3 functioning brain cells, he’d do a better job of using Love in this series. Btw, I love watching Lue standing there on the sidelines, with that totally vacant stare. I honestly think his health issues have impacted his decisions, so the extent that he’s an even worse coach than usual. His team is getting mugged out there, but no reaction from him. That alone is a fireable offense.
sorry, I meant to say “to the extent”
Russell Westbrook has to be one of the most over-rated players of all time.
mvp russell westbrook? but his statistics! they were all greater than double digits in our base 10 counting system – surely thats important?
Westbrook is sooooo close to being amazing. He’s the closest thing to Jordan we’ve had – the freakish athleticism, the insane drive – but he’s not the same scorer. If he used his passing ability more to give it to the guys who can actually score…
Did OKC management ever screw up. They had future MVP Durant, Future MVP Westbrook, and Future MVP Harde (2018), and not only did they fail to win a Finals, they traded away the wrong player for nothing, and it caused the best player to leave. They kept the third best player.
Lance should get fined for flopping.

Dude is just a complete clown. And not the funny kind of clown. He was born to be a King or Celtic.
I still think he is the funny kind of clown lol.
The best part of this video is that Larry Nance seems to be making sure Stephens can’t mess with Lebron. I’m going to go ahead and believe that. Best teammate ever.

I miss Griff

Tried the NBA Draft Lottery Machine: First go-round Cavs get the #1 pick and select Ayton. Future is bright!
Next 10 tries has us picking Michael Porter Jr. at Number 8. At least its not Trae Young :)
Got pretty much the same results
Got Collin Sexton a few times also… Bad news is that in most, Philly winds up with Mikal Bridges, who is the 3&D guy I’d prefer…
If bridges works out for them..that team has dynasty written all over it and will peak as Cavs, rockets, warriors age and crumble
Sexton could turn out to be really good. He’s more of a playmaker than, say, Bridges, just hard to guess how his shot will develop. He’s a pretty aggressive driver.
Mikal Bridges would be crazy on the sixers. Can’t believe they’re adding a top-ten pick to that core.
I would take a chance on Porter.
I won the lottery once in like 20 tries. I mostly picked Sexton.

Saw a lot of not very smart Pacer fans on the interwebs are all like “rigged. i won’t be silent srry i saw it live” about that Lance mugging of Green. Fans are dumb.
jmay thank you ( on your post about klove )—-agree he is not having the best of series/ agree he should sprint back on defense—but now is NOT the time to throw him under the bus —especially since we are aware of his ” anxiety issues “—believe he is the type of player who needs that POSITIVE FEEDBACK —GO KLOVE—GO CAVS !!!
Kevin Love’s totals through the first four playoff games this year:
6 – 8 Free Throws (75%)
9 -27 2pt Shooting (33%)
8 -20 3pt Shooting (40%)
11 Turnovers
-1 Plus/Minus
Indiana has defended Love’s “inside game” well without fouling him.
Oh, they’ve fouled him. The refs just aren’t calling it.
+1000 There were a couple of absolutely ridiculous no calls last game.
40% from deep and only -1 suggest that for as bad as he has played offensively it has not been a total disaster.
How much of our stunningly bad offense is due to the fact that we’re actually defending at a high level for the first time all season and having to learn/gain stamina to try and play on both ends of the floor at the same time?
We’re officially #3 defense in the playoffs behind Indiana and Golden State
http://www.espn.com/nba/hollinger/teamstats/_/sort/defensiveEff/order/false/seasontype/3
Ha and Boston is second last…amazing
I definitely think this has affected Korver and Love the most. Both have worked insanely hard on that end.
I said the same thing last night. Exerting energy on both ends is exhausting, especially when your coach is leaving you in for longer stints on the floor. This is a must win playoff game and how many times did we see 3/4/ or even all 5 guys walking up after a make sucking wind? A bunch.
I wonder if the Blazers might look to blow things up this off-season & deal McCollum (or even Dame)?
That looks like a very real possibility now. NO was probably a horrifically bad matchup given how good their Holiday and Rondo are defensively in addition to Davis, but man to get swept like that and have your number one guy shoot less than 30%….
36%
Good cap.
Lue is infuriating and Bron needs more rest.
I usually defend Love, but the not running back on D really pissed me off. I hate when Bron does it, too. Love is still our best rebounder (11) and only big who spreads the floor, so I see why Lue stuck with him. Did have some nice D late.
Clarkson hit Love (or Korver?) in the corner with a pass & but they missed the 3. I thought, “Great, he’ll never make that pass again.”
Not exerting too much on defense during the regular season tends to keep you from being in ideal shape when the playoffs roll around. Wait until they get in playoff shape! Defense is exhausting! Ha.
Man, you guys are HARD on Love right now. Short memories, I guess. Ya, I’m a Love apologist, ya he hasn’t had a good series, but we all know Love succeeds when he is put in position to succeed. Lue instead decided to put him right back at the 5 (remember that experiment didn’t work). Still, I agree, he should be able to at least be stronger around the rim, but DAMN, the man just tore his thumb. I don’t care if it’s not his shooting hand. Try to gather and hold onto a ball when your thumb is shooting… Read more »
I agree about him at Center, it’s not right to put him against the Pacer legit bigs. They should have played a real center more. Also I’m sure the thumb is a real hindrance. Combination of things, but even considering all that, pretty terrible game for him.
Bad game for sure. Mostly grinding at the calls for his trade next year if LBJ stays, or that he’s the reason we’re struggling this series… Neither are true IMHO.
Thad Young is a tough matchup for KLove… always has been…
He’s strong and quicker than he looks. Plus plays gritty and doesn’t have to worry about doing anything but shutting Kev down.
Myles Turner is an ever tougher match up for him
I’m ecstatic about this victory. I think it’s a HUGE win for us. Going into the playoffs, I half-expected the Cavs to flip the switch and obliterate their opponent. But that is not this team, they are in a different place, still working things out on the fly. This is not the 2016/2017 version of the Cavs. Maybe similar to the 2015 version after Love’s arm was ripped out of its socket. I really do believe that if this team plays to its potential and a few things break their way that they can make the Finals and maybe even… Read more »
That last spin move layup LeBron put on Bojan wasn’t as dramatic as his falling out of bounds corner three against the Bulls in 15, but this series does still eerily echo that one… Hopeful that (like that one) Cavs can find a way to close this one out in the next two…
The Cavs stopped trapping early in the shot clock in the fourth, or just not trapping at all. It threw off the indy offense. Second half defensive adjusts by Lue were as good as he’s made all year.
Pretty sure they are the only ones he’s made all year…
Longabardi earning those checks
It is still mind blowing to me how he even got hired after being the defensive coach for the League’s worst defense. Then, on top of it, managed to keep his job after a top 15 defense plummeted all the way to 29th… The man must be an artist at keeping his job…
reminds me of my most recent boss
He should take a Longabardi walk off a Shortabardi pier…
As bad as this is I chuckled.
Yeah, not my best work… but still fun to think about…
Yeah. Defensively he made the right calls for sure.
I doubt we see any less time for Lance. They need the energy he gives them.
If there’s any guy currently in the NBA that’s going to cause another Malice in the Palace, it’s Lance. Dude is just borderline nuts, and has little impulse control. NBA needs to get him in line.
THANK GOODNESS LEBRON HAS 2 DAYS IN HIS “HYPERBOLIC CHAMBER ” TO RECOVER —-MUCH NEEDED
AND YES WITH OUR SHORTAGE OF “BIGS “—-WHY NOT “FREE ANTE ” FOR A FEW MINUTES —-IF YOU SEE HE IS KILLING YOU THAT MUCH THEN ” END THE EXPERIMENT QUICKLY “—BUT YOU MIGHT ALSO — (LIKE WHAT WE SAW DURING THE SEASON )—BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED AND MAYBE ‘STUMBLE ” UPON ANOTHER USEFUL ROTATION
Really solid road win. Cavs funneled shots to Lance, Sabonis and Young, and even tho they all had good games, it wasnt enough offensively
Korver showed up. If he hits anything in game 3, this series looks. Lot different
LeBron cannot play full seconf halves. He was completely gassed and settled for jumpers all half. Mi utes need to be around 40
like evil watched the replay——good that the cavs are ” making me eat my pessimistic predictions “—–IF we can get past these pacers —I really do think the cavs will start to come together —although that SIXERS team will be a challenge ——-hoping LOVE / HILL ARE HEALTHY ON WED .—–AND –( I KNOW I KEEP SAYING THIS )—WE SEE “UTAH HOOD “—-JUST GIVE ME ABOUT 14-18 PTS RODNEY ——THE “Q” HAS TO BE LOUD –” ON FIRE ” COME WED / HELP THIS TEAM GET A “W”!!—–GO CAVS “INBELIEVELAND “

Reminds me of those pics of Blatt and being edged out of huddles.
I don’t get too defeatists during games, but I have to admit when the Pacers finally took the lead in the 4th, I didn’t expect the Cavs to win. I think I posted right around that time that the Cavs need someone to get hot or they are toast. Fortunately Korver did. Lue just can’t keep playing guys 12+ straight minutes, or Lebron entire halves. It’s a recipe for collapse in the 4th. Obviously not having Hill as expected really hurt.
Honest question because I’m probably missing something, but what is the justification for simply not playing Cedi? I totally understand not playing Ante because he’s more raw (although I think his size and energy would benefit us) – and combined with the inexperience, I can see that not being a recipe for playoff success for Ante.
But why not Cedi? Is he just not up for the playoff challenge (seems like a guy that could thrive on the energy, at least early)? Lue just biased toward rookies? Is it a LeBron thing?
lue is a bad coach. qed
combo of Lebron and Lue thing and lack of experience….however I don’t think he would be horrible with 5 minutes of playing time harassing a guard or wing player….just think in these times Lebron/Lue want the experienced guys in there and JR Korver Hood have playoff experience more than Cedi
I doubt McMillan plays lance much if at all anymore since he cost team the game at critical junctures….Lue and assistants have to extend the depth rotation a bit more here….Love seems lost, I would give TT and Nance more minutes and play Cedi at least 5 min/game to hound BogDan….Sabonis got the home cooking going, doubt we see that again….Cavs bigs have to practice boxing out, Pacers kept this close due to multiple put backs, same thing happened in Game 3…Hill needs to get better soon and get some minutes in, at least 5 per quarter, Calderon is solid… Read more »
clarkson looked bad in the second half, but i didnt see the first half
Clarkson hit a bunch of YOLO shots in the first, really helped. He had that infuriating Kyrie-like one on four goatrope in the second half (4th qtr?) that led to the predictable turnover.
He had two in a row a tally, ignoring wide open teammates
Think Love will bounce back, he usually does.
Please…noTT! He is the one who is completely lost…and has been for most of the second half of the season. He’s just not himself. I think it’s a combination of physical and emotional. He obviously has a lit of stress and drama in his life right now and he just hasn’t been around to bounce back from injuries.
I kid you not. Lance has a younger brother named Lantz.
Also he assaults women but yeah…Lantz
hahahaha
Itz true…

Lance shoulda been Crazy Eyes Killa…

Is this the love child of Jason Kidd and Jason Terry?
Man! He looks Evil!!
Random (maybe obvious thought: just read McMenamin refer to the Cavs as “three-time defending Eastern conference champions.” It’s kind of odd though because the only constants from the run are LeBron, JR, Love, TT, and Lue.” And going a step further, Love missed 14-15 playoffs mostly, TT is a non-factor, and Lue wasn’t coach first time around.
So it’s really just the LeBron show. They could just say 7-time defending Eastern conference champion LeBron James and leave it a that. Unreal.
Swish. You forgot swish.
yeah should have said “The LeBron and his trusty sidekick JR show”
Although, technically, Lue helped save that first run by tackling David Blatt before his timeout got recognized for a tech…
When his only job is to create OOB plays and keep track of timeouts, he’s excellent…
He is also excellent at watching tape… not absorbing the information from said tape, but he’s a really good watcher…
