Live Thread: 2018 NBA Draft (#DoYouFeelIt?)
2018-06-21I’ll admit it… my heart’s just not in this draft. Not because there aren’t a ton of terrific young prospects to choose from, even at the 8th spot where the Cavaliers find themselves… but because I’m finding it hard to enjoy it with the ever-present spectre of another LeBron James “decision” looming over it. With such a disparate group of players potentially available (from bigs to smalls to every swing man in between), the wrinkle that makes it even harder to evaluate who best suits this team… is the uncertainty of whether or not the pick in question will be sharing the court with the King. Do they complement his style… or will they suddenly have the weight of a franchise foisted upon their young shoulders. Hard to say.
Fortunately for me (and for the rest of you) we have a terrific staff here at C:tB who have been breaking down the potential candidates over the last week or two. The three remaining have generated some fairly polarizing views.
Apologies in advance, but I’m going to crib from the ESPN strengths and weaknesses since I have limited time before the draft starts…

Trae Young
Is he the next Steph? Or, is he the next Shabazz Napier? No college prospect moves the needle more between boom and bust for most NBA experts.
Strengths (courtesy of ESPN)
- Deadly pull-up shooter with deep range. Loves transition quick hitters. Kills pick-and-roll under coverages.
- Shifty ball handler who has it on a string. Uses his pull-up threat to set up the rest of his game. Has a knack for drawing fouls despite his size.
- Excellent passer (9.8 assists per 40 with a not-so-inspiring supporting cast). Should look even better with NBA spacing and talent around him.
Weaknesses (courtesy of ESPN)
- Underwhelming physical profile for a starting NBA point guard. How much will he be able to fill out? Lack of elite physical tools along with uninspiring effort lead to serious questions about who he’ll be able to defend at the NBA level. While partially due to role, he showed a lack of toughness defensively at Oklahoma.
- Struggles to finish in traffic against length and athleticism. Relied heavily on getting to the free throw line at the collegiate level — 9.7 times per 40 — but his efficiency took a dive when the whistles dried up.
- Brilliant court vision but can be careless with the ball, especially in a crowd. Lack of elite size limits his ability to see over the top of the defense. Gets bumped off his spots. Turned the ball over on 20.6 percent of pick-and-roll possessions.
My Take
If LeBron sticks around, Young could develop into something special, and probably wouldn’t be any worse than what the Cavs have had defensively at the point over the last couple of years. If LeBron bolts, Young does not exactly seem like the kind of cornerstone talent the team can build around. I hope they steer clear, but I could totally see the Cavs believing in Young as a sort of hail mary/Shabazz Napier kind of play. His ceiling also could be valuable in potential trades regardless of what LeBron decides.
Wendell Carter, Jr.
Is he the next Al Horford? Or, the next Al Jefferson? WCJ is a very large dude with a nice offensive touch, who doesn’t really do anything all that remarkable on the floor.
Strengths (courtesy of ESPN)
- Strong physical profile. Powerful and explosive off two feet. Uses verticality to protect the rim.
- Polished, versatile, intelligent player on both ends of the floor. Has soft hands to go along with strong footwork and touch. Good shooting mechanics; made 19 of 46 3s (41 percent) to go along with 74 percent of his free throws. Good passer and rebounder.
- Lauded for his outstanding intangibles as a worker and teammate. Has a very high floor.
Weaknesses (courtesy of ESPN)
- Not as explosive as some of his peers. Floor is high, but ceiling is also lower.
- Looks heavy-footed at times trying to defend in space. Might struggle to step out in pick-and-roll situations. Has good instincts, but will need to continue to hone his technique.
- Doesn’t always play with the type of physicality and confidence you might hope, especially in pressure-packed situations. Comfortable blending in.
My Take
Unless the Cavs go against what they’ve said publicly about wanting to hang onto Kevin Love, whether LeBron decides to leave or not, WCJ seems more like a redundancy of skills the Cavs already possess.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Is he the next Shaun Livingston (pre-injury)? Or, the next Michael Carter Williams? SGA is a tall, lanky and sneaky good finisher from the PG position, but is he a reach at #8?
Strengths (courtesy of ESPN)
- Elite size and length for a lead guard. Slithery athlete who gets to spots on the floor with long strides. Impressive side-to-side agility.
- Polished ball-screen player. Splits screens instinctually. Good pace as a facilitator. Can pass or finish with either hand. Crafty around the rim. Improved standstill shooter.
- Tools to become a multi-positional defender in time. Good instincts.
Weaknesses (courtesy of ESPN)
- Not overly explosive or physical. Gets by on skill and craft. PG skills could still use some polish.
- How will he score in the half court? Slow, flat-footed pull-up that’s easy to contest.
- Not always the defender he could be. Reaches rather than contains. Level of toughness is inconsistent.
My Take
While I’m a fan of tall point guards (especially ones with seven foot wingspans), I’m also a fan of point guards who can shoot. SGA is not going to impress many with his current ability to put the ball in the hole, except on layups… at least at the moment. While he could develop into a solid two-way PG, he’s not the kind of three point gunner that LeBron will have patience for if he stays. SGA could be a decent choice for a rebuilding team, but I’d prefer Collin Sexton’s game and motor over his.
So, there you have the last three candidates who might be available to the Cavs when they pick tonight. Of course, they could always move up or down the draft board with a trade tonight (as high as maybe Memphis at 4 if they want to take on Chandler Parson’s albatross contract… or down to 11 if they want to try to snag Kemba Walker and Nic Batum with a salary/pick swap with Charlotte).
We’ll do our best to keep this thread updated with all of tonight’s picks as they’re announced, or trades along the way. So please, hang out and follow along… no matter if your heart’s in it or not.

And, that concludes Round 1!
Feel free to hang out to see if the Cavs trade/buy back into Round 2…
Bagley to Sacramento
https://twitter.com/TheSteinLine/status/1009944182306344960
Agree with Billups Ayton reminds me of Embiid.
He’s not a defender like Embiid, Chauncey…
Can hardly wait for the awkward player interviews…
https://twitter.com/cs_mcgowan/status/1009940781522669568
quick cavs, trade everyone but Lebron for Doncic!
Ayton looks 30.
Greg Oden disease…
Respect from the NY crowd for Silver compared to Goodell…..until he praised the Dubs
Billups, our would-be GM. Better without Rose and Pierce, but that whole thing about big men? Why do you think these dumb teams are drafting at the top of the lottery?
Ayton will put up big numbers, I have no doubt, but I would take Doncic first…
yo this draft did not start at 7pm
Just like no Finals game started at 6pm…
Getting a local guy could be the worst thing for the Suns. I think Ayton will be a total coaster who puts up a lot of numbers in losing causes.
Yep. 20 and 12, and they will lose prodigiously…
https://twitter.com/TheSteinLine/status/1009942218277351424
https://twitter.com/IamHarshDave/status/1009942139927658496
Nice…
Watch Dubs take Grayson Allen…unless Hornets snag him first…
Celtics. Lock it in.
Also likely. They need a replacement for ‘Max Contract’ Marcus Smart.
Boos for the Warriors! Like Goodell level boos!
I am actually super thrilled about all the news I’ve heard about the Cavs concerning SGA and Porter Jr. Why? Everyone is throwing up smokescreens right now. Meanwhile? Whisper quiet on Sexton. Good signs. Good signs.
Totally agree.
Bleep the Warriors!
Everytime Silver walks out on stage… it feels like that scene out of Close Encounters…

https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1009941034485379075
I think there are real concerns about Porter’s back, but isn’t he just ripe for some bad info being floated out there? If I’m in the 7 – 15 range and don’t feel any scruples, I might float some rumors exaggerating Porter’s medical problems.
A LOT of scouts love Lonnie Walker…some think he could be a Donovan Mitchell in a couple of years…
Porter Jr. should have messed with people and come out with a walking cane…
Michael Porter Junior walking gingerly down the stairs. Bad sign.
Yeah, but he walked with the ‘Kobe Mentality’…
That’s a LOT of Holiday’s…
Luka’s MOM!
She looks the same age as her son and quite a head turner
Another reason to trade up and grab him…
I wonder if Gilbert will buy and picks tonight.
What are they waiting for?
SGA with the best suit so far.
Lol… we are opposite on fashion…
“Best” meaning most ridiculously fun.
Hate SGA’s suit…
I love Donte…I bet he is going to be great for some team…
Is this the first year they’re doing this with the parents?
Yes, believe so…
Bamba is really tall…
Lol
https://twitter.com/RustCoastSports/status/1009939141084082176
LeBron is Luka’s favorite player.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1009938301678182401
If the Mavs want Jackson, and Hawks really want Trae, Cavs should try to grab Doncic…I understand it’s an extreme long shot…
https://twitter.com/richeisen/status/1009937900677390336
Mitchell is pretty amazing…genius on the court, and impressive speaker…
I think it’s past time that Fred should retire the whole “sweaty palms” line…
https://twitter.com/CavsFredMcLeod/status/1009936785936388096
Yep.
And AC saying “it’s going to be a dogfight now” after Cavs blow another lead in the third quarter.
https://twitter.com/espn_macmahon/status/1009936386340909056
I read that SGA grew up a Raptors fan (he is Canadian). Maybe he’s a little sore about his team being owned by the Cavs. On the other hand, I’m skeptical of a lot of the info out there.
I never really wanted him anyways.
That’s good intel!
If we get Dwight and Porter then I quit!
Dwight should sign with Kings to mentor Bagley…it’s the kind of thing the Kings do…
https://twitter.com/MikeSeuffert/status/1009869638342193152
Freaking amen. Maybe he can sign with Dubs…
I wish the Cavs could get Doncic…with Lebron supposedly wanting to play off ball more, he’d be an ideal running mate…he can already freaking play…maybe if they had won that first freaking games against the Nets, they’d be sitting at 2…
With you. Dallas balked at the swing over money and a future first. You’d think the Cavs could eat a bad deal to move up. Sadly the future asset cupboard is pretty empty.
Ayton is definitely going first, right?
Yes. And Bagley looks set in stone to Kings.
And probably Doncic to Hawks at 3, unless Dallas pulls it off?
Unless the Hawks trade down, if they really prefer Trae…I bet they take Doncic…
Totally forgot Chauncey Billups was drafted by the Celtics…
Young wearing the ”wine” outfit.
Roger Goddell should walk to the podium just to get boo’d.
Cuz he doesn’t get enough of that in life? I bet his kids boo him when he gets home at night…
It would be for my entertainment
Maria Taylor makes Ayton not look so tall…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSLlZh9yelk
Trae hoping the short suit gets him to Cleveland…
https://twitter.com/NBA/status/1009932910982463488
Glad I tuned in. Thought the draft was at 8.
I could be talked into the 8th pick and fillers for Kemba and Batum.
There was some buzz on Cleveland radio today of a swap that would essentially be the 8th pick, Clarkson and JR for the 11th pick, Kemba and Batum… not sure that works money wise, and can’t imagine Charlotte doing it… but I’d take it in a heartbeat…
God, I would do that…
Yeah definitely.
Doncic seems very relaxed…i’d even say mature…
Mikal Bridges to the Sixers is sick…hope someone grabs him first…
Over the last three years, Walker has averaged 22/5.5/3.5 and 38.5% from three. Hopefully Kamba can sway LeBron
Taking Sexton over Young would be so stupid. Talent, not try hards, win in the NBA.
Posting Anonymously is so stupid.
How is Sexton not talented?
So if the start of the 2018-19 season has us with Trae Young on our team but not Lebron James, I might implode. Just saying.
We can always go to Laker games, JoeyB… /s
IT should be healthy and back to MVP form this year…
I’d literally go just to watch Channing…
I’m in.
https://twitter.com/daldridgetnt/status/1009929839279853569
https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1009929636262895622
If the Cavs keep the pick hope they take Sexton. If the Cavs can get Walker from Charlotte for whatever player the Hornets want, sign me up for that first.
Love this guy!
https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/status/1009928796697497601
https://twitter.com/andrewsharp/status/1009897109456347137
Regarding SGA…
Crazy… but it seems like smoke to me to get someone like the Raps to try trading up…
It definitely could be smoke to pressure other teams…I’d feel more confident about that if I trusted the FO more…we’ll see…
Herein lies the problem.
Implying they will trade the player?
https://twitter.com/RealGM/status/1009927679079043072
Oh dear lord. We are drafting Porter aren’t we?
Forget it, JMay, it’s Cavstown…
Nice!
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LKCeWwWlzsE/UOitGY0J32I/AAAAAAAAAKE/uktg1Bguakw/s1600/Chinatown+ending.jpg
How do the Nets have the money to just buy out Dwight?
Still hoping for Sexton… I just want guys with some fire…
Wouldn’t that be nice… to watch someone try all game long?
Lue won’t play those guys.
Especially from his new high chair next to Charles Barkley on TNT game nights…
Porter or Young. Please one of them be there at 8. Or trade the pick for Leonard.
Porter will probably be there at 12…Cavs should trade down if they want him…
Woj says Orlando looking at Trae Young now…SGA apparently told Cavs to not draft him (I agree with him, btw), but Hornets apparently like him, so could be drafted for future Kemba Walker trade…would not touch Porter, lot of teams backing off of him…
30 minutes to go and the rumor mill is working at full tilt.
LOL… cuz SGA has that power…
Hope he convinced them…
