Live Thread: NBA Free Agency Midnight Madness 2018
2018-06-30What’s wackier than a 1980 Disney movie about an all night college scavenger hunt? This year’s installment of the NBA’s Free Agency Midnight Deadline of course. And, as in the movie, Los Angeles seems to be the de facto epicenter of this gigantic game, with the Lakers being linked to just about every top name on the board. Now, that doesn’t mean the purple and gold will wind up with the prizes they covet, especially since they’ve come up short on so many free agency occasions over the past half-decade. However, they do have some Magic on their side this time around…
As far as actual activity goes though… tonight may wind up being a bit more dull than the past few midnights of madness. There’s at least a decent chance the primary dominoes of LeBron James, Paul George and (not-a-free-agent-but-possibly-about-to-be-traded) Kawhi Leonard won’t decide their fates until early next week. Also, there’s likely to be few surprises amongst some of the other big targets. Bad rumors of text messages from The King aside, it’s basically a foregone conclusion that Kevin Durant will re-up with the Warriors. Unless Nikola Jokic channels his inner Carlos Boozer, the big man will sign a max deal with the Nuggets. And, despite apparent tensions over promises made by prior ownership, it would be a major shocker if Chris Paul turns down whatever the Rockets offer to stick around a while.
So, where does that leave us? Well, pretty much waiting to see which big man is in which team’s chair when the music stops. DeMarcus Cousins (his achilles notwithstanding), Clint Capela and DeAndre Jordan could all potentially have new homes after tonight. To a lesser degree… other young bigs like Jusuf Nurkic, Julius Randle, Aaron Gordon, Jabari Parker and Derrick Favors might have to file change of address forms. Another interesting category is who will be the most overpaid former Celtic guard in the wee hours of tomorrow morning… Marcus Smart? Avery Bradley? Isaiah Thomas? Rajon Rondo? The possibilities for madness are nearly endless…
For us Cavs fans, outside of the obvious cocktail of dread and hope we’ll be slowly sipping after midnight, there’s not a whole lot more oddly to wonder about. Sure, there’s the minor issue of whether another team will be ignorant enough to offer Rodney Hood more than the qualifying offer the Cavs extended… or, maybe you’re the type of masochist who will stress over the prospect of losing Jeff Green or Jose Calderon. Barring that, though, it’s hard to imagine the Cavs having the latitude to do much until they know where LeBron stands. Regardless of what he decides, however, they still most likely will only have the $5.3 million taxpayer’s midlevel exception available beyond vet minimum contracts… unless there are some salary dumping trades in their future this summer.
Okay, don’t reach for your Ambien just yet… even if the madness isn’t quite as insane as years past, it’s still worth staying up to find out things like:
- Will Mark Cuban drive to DeAndre Jordan’s house to sign him this time?
- Will DWade do a sign and retire?
- Will the Raptors blow it up?
- Will Elfrid Payton find a taker now that he’s chopped off his trademark hair?
- Wherefore Dwight Howard?
- Will Jamal Crawford be this year’s Swaggy P signing for the Warriors?
- Will anyone sign Derrick Rose?
The answers to these burning questions and more should be known… after midnight. So, hang out and watch the madness unfold…

That’s a great contract
Wow…. CP3, KD, and PG13 staying??? Can’t see LeBron leaving now…. unless he wants to team up with a gutted LA roster with Boogie and Kawhi.

How is Byron Scott still employed?
Ty Lue and Mike Brown are too!

PG13 stays in OKC. Durant stays with GSW. Jokic & Barton stay in Denver. Gay stays with SA.
Why the Mavs prefer DJ over Boogie is strange considering on court only.
Boogie, Bron, & CP3 are the big names still on the board.

Yikes. I guess it’s worth it if they can get past the Warriors at least once.

PG13 staying in OKC helps us. It opens up a can of worms for LA.
Do they now go for a grandfather offer to get Kawhi fearing if they go cheap & he goes someplace else he pulls a PG13 on them next year?
Or do they go after Boogie, possibly ruining their Kawhi shot next year.

No doubt Lebron would love losing 40 odd games alongside Boogie’s winning personality and ouchy achilles…
Well not as good as PG, but unfortunately for us it might be enough. Hopefully, he realizes that is a dead end without Kawhi.
When will Boogie even be ready to play again? Do we even know at this point?
Not that I know of. But if DMC were to sign a long term deal for two years or more it might not matter. Still don’t think that would be as enticing without Kawhi or George to lbj but who knows?
Kevin O’Connor really wants Bron on the Lakers.

And the first half of the year… since Boogie won’t be basketball ready…
Achilles Injuries destroy careers. It is the mediocre maker.
The Cavs should sweeten their offer by giving LeBron January off. It’s when he’d rather not be playing anyway. Just say he’s having back trouble.
A side benefit: Without the January funk, he might win an MVP award again.

You have to wonder what might have been if Billups took the Cavs GM job and traded Love for Melo…might have actually succeeded in stopping Lebron’s Finals streak…

So, in keeping with his low-key personal style, Westbrook has a light that casts a big ‘W’ on his house.

Exhibit A and the only exhibit needed against Koby Altman: he helped the Lakers clear their cap AND gave them a first round pick to do it.
True… but they probably would have found a way regardless…
Oh agreed. The first rounder was ridiculous though.
Idk I think Nance probably worth a late first no?
Come on. Everyone was hyped about those trades when they went down. Obviously it didn’t work but they had to do something.

The Hardest Road.
He’s sacrificed so much… /s
Really think Magic needs to do whatever it takes to bring fan favorite Jordan Clarkson home. I think it will be a huge stain on Magic’s career if Clarkson doesn’t retire a Laker.

KD and LBJ in LA in 2020?

Impossible to argue with that. Not that it would matter much to Lebron.
Yep. Before that West & Baylor. And Kareem.
Plus Shaq & Worthy. Wilt. Gotta win at least two to threaten the top 10 there.

Yup…. that’s big.
I was at 50-50 LeBron stays vs leaves a week ago. Now im at 25-75 stays-leaves. LA sounds about right, sadly. The only real thing that would keep him in Cleveland is family and legacy. Unless there is a major deal in the works, the Cavs dont even make a ton of basketball sense. I dont think the Lakers make a ton of basketball sense but being non partisan is it worse than Cleveland? Maybe its tougher to make the finals but team wise they are probably close to Cavs supporting cast wise. I Like Love a lot, but he… Read more »
I disagree about Love. Having the worst star g backcourt in the playoffs killed them. Not love.
I dont think it was his fault, by any means. And absolutely having JR, Jeff Green, JC, Hood basically crap their collective pants was the reason. But they need a big change and the lack of asswts and flexibility is hurting them. Love CAN fit well, but what are the options to fill the guard spot so desperately needed?
Cedi :)
I don’t understand where the shooting is supposed to come from for the Lakers. Kuzma was average, and their only other volume 3 shooters were Thomas, Pope, and Lopez who are all (I believe) done in LA.
PG is a great volume three point shooter if they sign him. Kawhi is also very good if SA caves. If they snag both….but honestly Philly makes more sense based on the easier path through the east. Still E.G. mentioned it might not all be about bball which would seem to leave the cavs and LA.
Yeah obviously they’d be well off if they can get one of PG or Kawhi there. Very curious to see what that Lakers team would look with just LeBron though. Ingram showed some shooting ability last year on limited attempts. LeBron might be their best starting 3 shooter.
Not great I would think. In the east they could probably contend for a 3-4 seed. In the west, not so much. I think they would be somewhere in the 6th through eighth seed barring massive improvement from Kuzma, Alonzo, and Ingram.
Ingram and Kuzma are nice pieces offensively, but probably not enough to push them into the upper tier of the west. It is LBJ though, and he has the ability to elevate his team/teammates maybe more than anyone in history.
Lonzo
1000000% yes
Love, as a big, needs help making plays. He does not get a lot of that here after the first quarter. He averaged 20/10 thry the first 3 finals games with a bad thumb that had to make things harder.
He is not a #2 but is a championship quality #3.
