From Distance: Playoff Questions
2019-05-11four point play, with a bunch of and-ones……….
With two Game Sevens remaining in the second round of the Playoffs, I thought it time to ask some Playoff questions. It seems the general evaluation process of players is more fickle than I can ever remember. After each game, somebody declares a winning player as a Hall of Famer, and laments any star player on the losing team as a terrible human being, unworthy of love.
Frankly, it is exhausting. And fun.
We normally try to keep some levity here at C:tB, but no one is patently against some fun hot takes! With that, I will ask and answer a few questions regarding the many notable story lines of the 2019 Playoffs. I’ll keep my answers short. Let us have yours in the Comments.
In no particular order:
1. Who is the most overrated Houston Rocket?
Chris Paul. Despite his solid Game 6 performance in the Rockets’ losing effort, Paul has consistently been pretty good in the playoffs, but rarely great. For a player that is widely considered to be a top 10 Point Guard of All Time, that just isn’t good enough for me.
His poor defensive rotation on a Klay Thompson three pointer late in the game may have cost the Rockets their season. Should we kill an otherwise good defender for missing one rotation. Sure!
2. Are the Rockets better without Kevin Durant? (Of course I meant the Warriors, but yes, that mess up is hilarious)
Of course not. BUT, I think the Warriors’ floor is higher without Durant than with him. That may seem strange considering Durant is a very consistent player. Still, the Warriors’ offensive attack isn’t quite as fluid with Durant as it is without him.
That can cause the Dubs to go through some tough stretches when the other guys get out of rhythm. When they are firing on all cylinders, the Durant Warriors probably have the highest ceiling of any team ever.
3. Who is having the best Playoffs?
Can it be anyone other than The Freak? Giannis may have had a less than stellar Game 1 against the Celtics, but other than that, his Bucks have mowed through the competition. He is leading the NBA in Playoffs win shares per 48, leading in Defensive Rating, and is leading in PER. Yes, a dude is leading in both PER and Defensive Win shares. That is not a common occurrence.
Beyond the numbers, Giannis is taking people’s hearts out, one crazy play at time. When he blocked Horford’s shot from a defensive post position in the Bucks’ closeout victory, it was emblematic of The Freak’s rise. “No more!”

4. Would you want Embiid or Jokic going forward?
Not shocking to anyone who has ever read me, I would take The Joker 10 times out of 10. Embiid can be more physically dominating, a more fearsome defender, and a tougher guy to stop one-on-one. When healthy, he is monster.
And yet, Jokic is the better basketball player. Jokic’s overall floor game is simply spectacular. He knows when to do what on a possession to possession basis as well as anyone I have seen. His soft touch off spin moves, in the floater game, and clearly in his passing, is a wonder to behold. Defensively, Joker is huge, moves his feet well considering his size, and has disruptive hands.
More than anything, Jokic can play with anybody. Put him with Ben Simmons and Simmons becomes a fearsome rim-roller. His decision making would unlock any limitations that Simmons has. That shouldn’t be a deciding factor between the two star bigmen, but it says a lot about Embiid’s limitations as a passer and shooter.
5. Are Hood and Hill better without LeBron James?
Yes. And so am I.
6. In a vacuum, with no injury concerns, would Eric Gordon be better than Klay Thompson?
I love Gordon’s game. But the answer is, “are you frickin kidding me?” Gordon is a good shooter. Klay is an all-timer who allows the Warriors to Warrior. If you would have subbed in a healthy Gordon for Thompson, they probably would still have won a couple championships, but Klay is the better player overall. Breaking someone down off the dribble is not the only skill in the world.
7. With Irving’s terrible shooting percentage in Round 2, has Kyrie officially turned into Kobe Bryant?
I can’t wait to root against him wherever he ends up next year. But let’s not insult Kobe. At least Kobe is actually a bright guy and not an intellectual wannabe. Well… Actually… We need more information.
8. How has the NBA media still not gotten the memo that Khris Middleton is legit good?
Middleton hasn’t scorched the earth this year like he did last Playoffs, but his two way play as a two guard has been incredibly important to the Bucks success. Khris is huge, but has the smarts and feet to hang playing the two guard for huge stretches. That has allowed the Bucks to play Mirotic with Lopez and Giannis in the frontcourt. Good luck scoring against that size, or grabbing an offensive rebound.
Mirotic has been better than expected as a defender in the playoffs. (Not good, just not terrible). That isn’t possible without Middleton’s flexibility.
9. What do the Sixers do?
Game 7 will go a long way to deciding the Sixers’ fate. Harris is at his best when he handles in the PnR. Butler is at his best when he handles in the PnR. Simmons is at his best when he handles, period. Embiid needs the rock.
Butler and Harris are equipped to play off ball, so Coach Brett Brown has bent over backwards trying to play through Simmons and Embiid as much as he can.
I don’t expect that to happen in Game 7. If they want to win, Harris and Butler need to be their primary play-makers, Simmons needs to not play in crunch time, and Embiid needs to show up.
Still, would you really trade Simmons to resign Butler and Harris? Elton Brand will have a tough off-season unless the Sixers make the Finals.
10. Are the Warriors still the favorites with Durant out for the foreseeable future?
Sigh. Yes… And who knows how a sans Durant championship would affect his free agency decision. Seriously, who knows? Anyone?
What a finish.
No matter what, the Kawhi trade was a win for the Raptors…
OMFG…. that was insane.
Holy crap. Those two seconds when the ball was bouncing around the rim and then the crowd goes nuts. That’s awesome
Like the end of Caddyshack…
O M G…
Wooooooooooowwwww….that ball was messing with everyone for a good 3 seconds.
Jimmy Buckets….
Beautiful shot.
Big FT miss by Kawhi…we may see OT tonight…
Ibaka has been bad a lot of this series, but they lose this game by double digits without him…
Philly so dumb. Post Joel.
Sixers/ Embiid refuse to bully ball in the paint, constantly have Embiid at the three point line…seems dumb to me, but I’m not a highly paid NBA coach…
The problem is you can do that with Simmons on the floor.
Huge Kawhi three…
Err, two…
Hitting the shots that DeMar couldn’t.
That foul on Reddick is such trash…he was brushed, guys get mugged constantly in the paint, and it’s play on. The NBA needs to get a grip and some balance on how they call this stuff. That was a play on, not a foul.
Absolutely.
Terrible OOB TO by Kawhi.. followed by a dumb foul by Ibaka
Embiid with the Eurostep. Made me laugh.
These game 7s are delivering…
Yes!
Don’t really have a dog in this fight, but I feel bad for the Raptors fans given what Bron did to them last couple of years. I’d be happy for them if they play on.
Lot of space opening up for shooters – must be some tired legs out there.
Man. Fall asleep asleep on the couch and it’s the 4th already.
Boy did the Raptors need Ibaka the last few minutes.. someone looking to score rather than give the ball to Kawhi..
Simetimes teams just poop the bed in game 7.
2016 was a brickfest until Kyrie hit the Shot. Kobe went 8-24 and Gasol bailed him out. Happens all the time.
TOR without kawhi is a lottery team.. about on par with the cavs.. except the cavs get a reload with jazion
Siakam, Lowry, Green, Gasol, Ibaka is still pretty decent. Van Vleet kills us. Anonuby is out, don’t forget.
These teams both decided to be pretty trash that half…
uncle buck is rooting for TOR and kawhi.. but sadly.. 76ers win.. you heard it here first
13 point quarter for Philly…woof…
Van Vleet is so useless in this series…he’s too small and he can’t shoot…I’d almost play Lin…
Ah man! Afternoon games are hard to catch on this side of the planet – looks like Blazers v Nuggets was a good one.
Brick. Fest.
If James Butler has a hot game, Sixers can win…otherwise I like the home team…
Did they report what Hood’s injury was? Joined late…
hyperextended knee.
Oh, bummer…thanks!
yeah… could be minor, could be serious…. you’re welcome!
Steph vs Seth incoming…
good thing portland picked up kanter.. otherwise, they likely lose badly to the nuggets..
murray will be thinking about thia one for quite a while.. 4-18, and 0-4 from 3 !!?? in a game 7.. sad.. at least he hit his FTs, like lillard
Same with Hood…. Hood saved them at least in two games this series.
The King has spoken LOL: https://twitter.com/KingJames/status/1127698270833086464
We get to see McCollum for at least 4 more games. Smoothest player I have ever seen.
Great series. I watched every game since Game 2 and I didn’t regret the lost sleep at all. Excluding the Game 5 blowout all the other games were tightly contested, highlighted by the ridiculous 4 OT game. It’s better that the Blazers advanced because Denver is a terrible matchup for the Warriors. The Ws would have swept them I think. At least the Blazers can keep it interesting.
Agreed…. it delivered.
Yeah, cost me a ton of sleep, but watched every game. Amazing.

Wow…gutty as hell series from the Blazers…happy for Dame and CJ and their fans…
Big game for Ohio basketball. CJ McCollum and Evan Turner coming up huge.
Biggest FTs of Evan Turner’s life…
Boy, Turner should maybe hold that…but if he hits the FTs…
Big miss by Jokic.
Jokic 1 of 2 from the line…I was shocked he missed one…
McCollum with 4 shots in a row from the exact same spot! Gah, make him go somewhere else…
Blazers in great position…should be OT worst case…gotta be smart…
CJ!!! Icewater!
McCollum jordanesque from mid range this quarter.
Yup… just goes to show, shoot your shot, stay in the flow.
Down to the freaking wire…Blazers up one with the rock…Nuggets will get it back…
Great recovery after the strip to make that shot.
CJ! Need Dame to step up…
Terrible closeout gives Jokic an easy deuce
Cj taking over
Man, good game…gotta hand it to the Blazers playing so tough on the road…
McCollum with an all time block there.
interesting.. it took CJ McC 2 years to come into hos own in NBA.. only started averaging 20+ in his 3rd year.. and he was a #10 1st rounder.. hopefully, bodes well for our young bull..
too bad we were never able to nab CJ McC..
at least Dame hasn’t forgotten how to hit his FTs..but 2-14 in a game 7 is really putrid
as warren buffet has stated, “you don’t know who is swimming naked until the tide goes out”
Dame finally hits a 3. Hood hurt hyperextended knee?
Nice quarter Blazers. This has been a great series.
looks like dame-time turning into a kyrie-like flop.. sad
not sure if dame can pull a curry out of his hat in the 2nd half.. he’s good, no he’s great, but not curry
either way.. nice to see denver and portland doing well in the west.. let’s hope one can defeat GS (unlikely, but you never know, esp if durant is out)
Nurkic would really help Portland. As much as I like Denver, Portland at full strength is better.
Would love the winner to beat GSW, but I doubt it. Durant or no Durant.
COMBINES MIGHT INFLUENCE SOME OF THE THINKING—MAYBE /MAYBE NOT
so, who are CtB consensus picks for slots 3, 4 & 5 ?
I would take Barrett, Hunter, White.
2nd what John said… Culver probably deserves discussion in there, probably at 5 or 6.
I want thenlm trading out of that spot if they don’t have no. 1. I don’t see much difference between 2 and 10.
I think there is a very large gap between Morant and everyone else.
I can’t wait for the Lakers upcoming season of hilarities.
SO 2 DAYS FROM NOW WE FIND OUT THE –FATE / FUTURE –OF THE CAVS —KEEP THOSE “NOVENAS ” GOING !!! : )
It seemed like Chris Paul lost some of his quickness, which made a huge difference in his effectiveness.
Kyrie turning into Kobe would be like a larvae turning into a butterfly. And I am no huge fan of Kobe. But he is top 15 all-time. Top 20 at worst. Borderline top 10.
Yeah they are on different levels. He was never the best player in his time, but he certainly is an all timer. If Duncan and LBJ weren’t there he probably would have been. But Duncan is probably top ten all time and LBJ is probably minimally top 5 and more probably top 3, so that is not exactly a great argument for him being outside the top 15.
Except for a couple years around 2008-10, I do not think Kobe even had an argument as the top player. Shaq, Duncan, and LeBron for almost all his career. A little Mailman, KG, & Dirk in there as well.
Yeah Shaq was better at his peak too obviously.
It’s also still possible Kurt Rambis will be hired as an assistant. Lakers have to do this, imo.
Lol. Lakers hire Vogel with Kidd as an assistant. This is gonna be fantastic.
Kidd head coach in waiting. You know he’ll be HC sometime in January…I love this hire.
Wifebeater to boot. Or was it girlfriend?
Definitely wife. I think it was Shelburne who just said that his ‘red flags’ are the reason he’s an assistant rather than HC. But I definitely expect him to be HC by February. Vogel never played in the NBA, and we know how Lebron feels about that.
So weird for Kidd to be picked as an assistant (and likely future HC). Kidd was a consensus failure in MKE.

That’s a great freaking tweet ;)
I am the least Kobe fan person on Earth, hate his game and all the BS surrounding him, but he could legit carry a team to the playoffs in his prime, something I never see Kyrie doing. Kyrie can get his numbers, but never elevates his team. That Boston team could have been a 4 seed in the East if KI had sat all year. Not really disagreeing with you here, Ben. I’d take Jokic all day over Embiid. Besides his better overall game, he actually plays come gametime. I believe Embiid has had a respiratory infection or whatever, I… Read more »
I will credit Kobe as being a very good perimeter defender as a guard for quite awhile. Especially during his time with Shaq. That is something Irving will never be. He is a flopper, but there was an interesting article on ESPN that explored the reasons he falls down so much. Spoiler alert, his doctors advised him to fall sometimes rather than get in situations where he might awkwardly land on one of his legs or where he might get tangled up in order to prevent high stress on his feet/knees. Makes sense falling would lessen some of the pressure… Read more »
I also meant Embiid for that second part.
1. Clint Capela. C’s struggle v H5, but other than dunking, he has nothing. CP3 is NOT a top 10 PG. More like top 15. Magic, Oscar, Curry, Cousy, Isiah, Stockton, Frazier, Nash, Kidd. That is 9. I would also take Payton, Wilkens, Bing, Archibald, Davies, and Parker over CP3. I consider AI/Pistol Pete 2s. 2. GSW = no. But it is more a depth issue. They are more fun to watch without him. They are also 27-1 without him and with Steph. And I *think* the plus minus are: Steph minus KD > Steph & KD > KD minus… Read more »
“2. Are the Rockets better without Kevin Durant?”
Lol! Clearly not. I don’t care if this question was a typo, it’s hilarious and damning for Houston all at once.
