Draft Profile: De’Andre Hunter
2019-05-21As we count down to the 2019 NBA Draft, the staff here at Cavs: The Blog will be taking a look at the players who could be available to the Cleveland Cavaliers with either of their first-round picks. Today, we take a look at Virginia forward and National Champion, De’Andre Hunter.
Background Information
- Name: De’Andre James Hunter
- Height: 6’8″
- Weight: 227
- College: After red-shirting his freshmen season to work on his game, Hunter played two seasons at the University of Virginia.
- Accolades: 2019 National Champion, 2019 NABC Defensive Player of the Year, 2019 NABC Second-Team All-American, 2019 Sporting News, Associated Press, and USBWA Third-Team All-American, 2019 First-Team All-ACC, 2019 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, 2018, ACC Sixth Man of the Year, 2018 ACC All-Freshman Team
- Background: Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 2, 1997he son of Priscilla and the late Aaron Hunter Sr., he also has an older brother, Aaron Jr., and two sisters, Candice and Cheyanne. Attended Friends’ Central High School in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, where he was the 2016 Class AA Player of the Year.
Strengths
Hunter’s strengths start with his defense and physicality. Possessing an excellent build for an NBA wing, similar in size to big NBA wings such as OG Anunoby, Rudy Gay, and Wilson Chandler, he uses his length and strength to do an great job of both containing perimeter players off the dribble and switching on to big men. This versatility is extremely useful in today’s NBA, where players who can switch and guard multiple defenders are valued more than ever. Hunter does an excellent job of contesting shots without fouling, and averaged just two personal fouls per game this season. He is also a very good team and help defender and doesn’t lose his focus when defending off ball. Hunter is also solid on the glass for a wing, averaging just over five rebounds per game.
Efficiency is the name of the game when it comes to Hunter’s offense. Last season, he posted and extremely impressive true shooting percentage of 61.8% while shooting 43.8% from three and 78.3% from the line. This is especially impressive considering Hunter averaged over 10 field goal attempts per game. Hunter is very good at using his strength and size to finish at the rim, and can shoot both off the catch and off the dribble. While he didn’t usually initiate the offense or create for others off the dribble during his time at Virginia, Hunter is a solid passer within a team’s offense and typically makes the right reads in the flow of the game.
Hunter plays with a high motor and was considered a good teammate during his time at Virginia. He has shown a willingness to sacrifice his own statistics in favor of team success.
Weaknesses
Hunter is one of those players who is good at most things but not really elite at anything. His biggest flaw on offense seems to be the lack of the kind of handle star perimeter players are known for. While he can attack the basket off the dribble, he mostly operates in straight drives and doesn’t have much of a drive-and-kick game. His lack of ability to create for himself or others is concerning for a perimeter player, let alone one who is a high draft pick. While he has shot well from deep during his time at Virginia, it was on just 160 attempts over two seasons.
While many would fairly point to Hunter’s defense as his elite skill, there are concerns on that end. While there is no doubt that he is a very good defender, Hunter did have some struggles with containing elite athletes off the dribble. Even more concerning, he averaged just 0.6 blocks per game to go with the some number of steals. While individual defensive statistics can be overrated, high steal and block rates tend to be a solid predictor of a prospect’s NBA success. While some of this can be attributed to Virginia coach Tony Bennett‘s pack-line defense, it does raise some flags about Hunter’s future. The fact that he is already 21 years old, far older than the likes of Zion Williamson, Jarrett Culver, and R.J. Barrett is also a strike against Hunter as a prospect.
Thoughts
A lot of mock drafts have projected Hunter going to the Cavaliers with the fifth pick in this June’s draft, and with good reason. Hunter is an impressive physical specimen who plays the game the right way. He has a solid motor and has a reputation for being a good teammate. Those intangibles, along with his two-way play seem to fit with the kind of player the Cavaliers would be interested in. For those who have a risk-averse nature, Hunter would seem like an appealing pick. It’s hard to see him not being at least a solid rotation player at the next level.
That being said, the Cavaliers are probably hoping for more than “solid rotation player” with the fifth pick in the draft. Maybe they shouldn’t be, but Dan Gilbert, Koby Altman and company probably want to add the type of player the team could truly build around rather than a complimentary role player. The one thing the Cavaliers lack outside of Kevin Love is a player who looks they could be an All-Star, and while Hunter may become the type of high-level starter that every team covets, there’s still a big difference between that type of player and a star who can carry his team in big moments.
Given Hunter’s age and relatively mediocre (and somewhat concerning) individual statistics, it’s difficult to see him as the kind of player with the upside to become the kind of star teams want near the top of the draft. Still, there are exceptions to every rule, and if the Cavaliers see that potential in him, then it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear his name called with the fifth overall pick on draft night.
I’m sorry NOW you are swallowing your whistles refs?
And that’s all folks. A larger women is singing.
Awful execution by bucks down the stretch both from game plan and actual play.
Two bucks and no one gets s the board. Brutal. Middleton just stands there while Lopez has his hands full boxing Gasol.
Kawhi ridiculous yet again tonight…
Refs are calling fouls on the bucks that they just arent calling on the other end. Sorta strange
Yeah. Foul on Gasol?
pretty clearly a foul on Lopez…
Lopez wasn’t exactly in good position. Could have been called for a hold on board. Moot point.
Bucks need a stop
Oof Lopez Middleton. Gotta get that board. Probably game
Giannis in iso drives is just not productive against this d and Kawhi.
Wow what a bunch of sequences. Hustle on both sides.
Lopez clutch trey
VanFleet has been insane
Freddy big shot showing up tonight…
Haha this is a fun one. Brogden is sneakily really valuable.
Bad gamble by hill. Left bigs out of position
Giannis huge three
Giannis has had way too many turnovers just driving into a sea of Raptors defenders. I think Bucks should use Giannis in the post more.
Middleton nowhere to be found this game
Agree. They have to do something different. They need to use him maybe as a decoy rolling of if they bite find him on a roll.
That being said it also feels like Toronto’s playoff experience seems to be the biggest difference right now…bucks are looking out of sorts
The refs seem to be allowing Toronto a lot more contact on defense than the Bucks at this point…they were letting almost everything go in the first 3 quarters but they seem to be giving Toronto a little edge in the 4th
Man, nothing easy in the paint…
There is so little man and ball energy on offense for the bucks that the rapture arent having to do anything but stay home
Agreed, Toronto is packing the lane and Giannis is just bouncing into a wall. Even if he kicks it out the Bucks can’t hit a bucket.
I think they need to run Giannis off ball a bit more. Or in the p and r with a shooter like Middleton. Give him some run way. Him iso driving against a pack paint isn’t working that well.
Run him as a.roller in the p and r
Been a very physical game. Raptors more physical right now.
Bad breakdown by the bucks on Kawhi drive.
Bucks probably a much tougher matchup for GS, but I’m starting to think Kwahi is going to drag Toronto past the Bucks. Same was true for Denver, I think they could have played GS tougher. God I hate GS, but probably no one can beat them four times with or without KD.
These bucks could truly be unstoppable if Giannis develops a semi consistent J. Until then half court will cause them issues against good d in the playoffs.
It sounds as if he’s got the work ethic to add it to his game. But there’s more to it than that.
True that.
Kawhi looking more Jordanesque as the playoffs continue…
Kawhi torching them on the high pick and roll…Lopez every time, makes no sense for Bucks…
He also has made some tough tough shots. Like that last three. Lopez had a full contest. Drilled it in his face.
He’s feeling it…they should make him give up the ball…
Not sure they should double every time, but agree they should try aggressive traps opportunistically with their length.
Question is will Bud make adjustments before too late?
Raptors missing a lot of open threes.
Wow another crazy bulldoze by Giannis called a block.
Detracts from the game.
Giannis has a worse shot than I thought. It’s really difficult to develop feel for that AFTER your hands grow into Lilly pads.
Ugh. Ifbyou didnt watch the games in this series you would think either of these teams had a chance against Golden State. I dont see it. Raptors are too small at guard and bucks arent good enough shooters to play the style they do
I’m pretending like this is the Finals and enjoying these competitive games.
Haha probably for the best. The only reason id give the rapture a chance over the bucks is kawhi won’t shrink in the moment
Meh. Bucks have a ton of shooting though and they get a fair number of decent threes with teams packing against Giannis. Brogdon, Illysova, Lopez, Middleton, Hill are all more than capable of knocking down open threes. They also have more streaky shooters that can hit treys. But they do have to make those threes. They also could cause problems for GS without Durant with their length. One issue they will possibly run into is their wall the paint d scheme against GS. They give up a bunch of wide open threes. They have this game. Raptors can’t always take… Read more »
You simply cannot have scoring droughts that last 7 minutes against the warriors and expect to win more than 1 game. That happens to the bucks almost every game
Warriors also haven’t played a defense with this length and pressure. With Durant Bucks are in trouble. Without, Warriors may have trouble getting Curry and Thompson free for long.
You just made the case for why that isnt a going to be an issue. The defebse of the bucks gives up loads of 3s.
Yeah. But GS also needs their role players to hit. Not necessarily a given with their bench or Draymond. I could see the bucks bottling up Curry and Klay. With Durant that isn’t possible.
Giannis with some great one on one d on Kawhi.
George Hill looks 300% more confident than he did with Cavs…
Yep.
Good game here.
Yeesh bunch of bad possessions in a row for raptors. Bucks pressure rushing them.
Both teams swarming on d. Raptors have gotten a bunch of open looks from 3 this game, but for guys who are not necessarily the most consistent shooters.
Bucks pulling away with about 3/5 of their points coming in secondary breaks. Doing a good job of attacking before raptors get completely set and finding cross matches in transition.
Wow. Giannis just got away with one of the most blatant charges I have seen. Just ran over Lowry who had position on the drive.
I love Giannis, but he gets away with tons of stuff….obvious offensive fouls, obvious travels, etc…the only reason he isn’t given the Harden treatment from average fans is that he isn’t try to trick the refs…yet he benefits just the same…
Siakam cold as ice from distance this series.
Raptors really have relegated Giannis to passer in halfcourt and scorer in transition this game.
Love how this series has an old school feel. Both teams just looking to buy a bucket at times
Yeah, two really good defensive teams. Fun to watch.
I feel like both these teams can struggle to score though. Raptors if nobody makes shots. Bucks because their is an effective game plan for them in the half court.
Raptors swarming bucks in halfcourt. Lots of deflections and rushed threes. Raptors just missing open shots.
Warriors org has to secretly love this.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2019/05/23/the-moment-klay-thompson-realizes-he-just-lost-30-million/amp/
Weird thing about that is he’s going to get ~$200 million and feel like he got the shaft.
No doubt. 30 million is a lot of money though. Feel like half of the snub in these situations is due to the ego factor of top NBA players. They all have some ego because of course you would, but yeah 191 mil is 191 mil.
This shot is rough, but a definite work in progress. It’s a quick release, but he’s strictly catch an shoot 4th option at this point with a low release point and hardly any elevation on his j.
https://twitter.com/rodboone/status/1130496238288285696?s=19
He does what he does at an elite level. I think he’ll always be a rough shooter in the NBA.
Definitely a shawn Marion comp
I see him as a little bit of Andre Roberson with more offensive game. I’d love to have him, just not at 5…
Not close to Roberson. Roberson is an offensive zero. Clarke is a very good offensive player and the second best finisher in the draft. He’s just not a shooter.
Ok, but I don’t think you are disagreeing…
Yeah. I’m disagreeing. Clarke is a hit of a unicorn.
Especially with that wingspan. I kid. I think that term is thrown around a bit much these days.
Definitely looks Marion-like!
Oof, that shot’s not pretty. I hate that release. Does remind me of Marion.
He is a rim runner/protector guy who works the glass at this point. Think a smaller, smarter TT who finishes better and is more athletic.
agreed…. also agree with JMay, that shot is ugly, very Marion-esque

Yeah. Saw the profile Cleveland.com. Interesting player. Has some skills and amazing footwork. Not sure about his shooting and he has to be in an offense that makes sense for him. San Antonio a great fit.
God, he’d probably kill it there…

Buck, I feel the need to say that you are far less of a cynic than I thought you were 6 months ago! Since the Cavs played with a little bit of grit and pride and got you to buy in on some of them you’ve become positively pleasant. No insult or sarcasm at all intended. I really feel I misjudged you 6 months ago. You were sincere in that you just wanted to see some fight in this team. A lot of people say they want things just to have an excuse to complain. You were being sincere. As… Read more »
if you give me justification, i will curmudgeon with the best of them.. otherwise, i am pretty chil.. thx for the kind words.. and yes, i did respond positively when the team crawled out from under the rock they were hiding under.. still positive.. if the front office is smart (and lucky).. cavs can be .500 team, or better for the foreseeable future.. could be a heck of a lot worse..
Yes, yes it could be much worse. I hope they show the potential that we’ve seen for next season. Going above 500 and being good would be amazing to see, but I’ll be happy as long as they develop and show potential in the key pieces of the future, even if the other spare parts don’t make them quite as competitive yet.
Either way, we’ll wear out our phones and keyboards talking about it.
His mental makeup is of concern.

I would hope the drills don’t majorly affect decisions unless someone changed visibly changed their shot/improved their mechanics drastically or managed to improved another skill like ball handling spectacularly. Even then, drills don’t mean all that much to me. Scrimmages sure. Measurements, maybe a little, if they are in the extremes. I still think the focus should be on the play or potential seen in college. What is a guy’s peak look like against competition in college? What was their nadir? Did they show or flash some elite skills combined with good instincts, attitude, awareness? Do they show some elite… Read more »

I think he’s barely scratched the surface and was severely limited by Coach K’s desire for strict team roles. I think he wanted to do more of what RJ did for Duke, but was restricted to a catch and shoot 3/D role. I worry more about his attitude, because he should’ve had plenty of points shooting 3s and didn’t really do well fitting into a team concept.
Probably. He didn’t look super impressive as a finisher to me or at his ability to get to the bucket. And man he was streaky as a shooter. He certainly looks good shooting in practice.
I can’t super fault the not getting to the bucket because of how teams defended Duke.
yup… teams packed the paint a ton… in fact, if he deserves a demerit for anything, it’s the decision making of driving into a packed paint when he’s more than capable of shooting from outside.
Their best shooter was Alex McConnell, who barely played, and Jack White’s shot abandoned him after the first couple of games. They literally had no shooters getting minutes other than Reddish.
God… that shooting form is pure.
Reddish will probably be a decent/ good three shooter in the NBA, my concerns are his dribbling and decision making…and possible mental makeup…hard pass for me, if he becomes a star, so be it, I still wouldn’t take him based on available evidence…
I like this dude a lot as a later pick…
https://twitter.com/DraftExpress/status/1131305195944779782
A small shooting guard who can’t defend, pass, or dribble?
He does look like he has a lot of “grit” and plays the game the right way tho.
Guessing you didn’t see any of his games last season?
He’s been compared to Reddick, and I see it. He takes and makes tough shots on the move all the time. Someone who can shoot like he does I’ll take and worry about D later.
Seems like a whole lot of effort on his shot – not sure why he has to jump in a yard every time he shots. Going to be inconsistent at the end of a game when legs are tired
One name not mentioned at 26 that I think should be is Ignas Brazdeikis…. played for Beilein, great shooter… strong guy, not the quickest. Looks like a 3-4 3/D player.
I wonder if the Cavs will have Bickerstaff coach summer league? Seems like the most logical thing to do.
Why wouldn’t Beilein? Kerr started experimenting with his offense that first summer league with the warriors.
I doubt that happens with Beilein, but who knows…he’d probably be better off just going to summer league and watching the process…
Heard Beilein wanted to coach some of summer league just to get some experience with pace and extra hands on coaching with young players
https://twitter.com/Mike_Schmitz/status/1131277974223802368
I’m liking for the Cavs more and more every day. I’m worried he won’t be available at 5 now.
I like him a lot…I don’t know what’s in the Cavs minds, but I hope to god it’s not Reddish over Culver…
I’ve mentioned this before, but his form is fine…. it’s his poor shot selection (off the dribble, long 2s) that needs to be cleaned up. Hopefully, he can progress in a similar manner as Sexton has.
Yeah, agree…I’ve been thinking for a while he could be a much different player when not playing in a pretty strict system like he played in at Tech…
I wouldn’t call that “realty well.” it’s good. But there are issues. And when he misses, he misses badly.
The hitch seems to more most present on a number of those misses. Shooting on the way down seems inconsistent.
True.
Steph before Steph

Damn I miss healthy Mark Price as a Cav. He made 3 year old me a huge fan throughout my childhood…even though just under 5 year old me had to cry when Jordan hit The Shot over Ehlo…
I miss when having a competitive playoff team was enough to make people happy. Late 80s and early 90s Cavs gave the Bulls some great challenges and I’d never want to lose the fun from those teams to blow it up because they didn’t make the Finals.
https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/status/1131184264215707649?s=19
My second favorite game of all time. What a shot. I don’t think I have ever been happier by a single shot in my sports life.
Not Kyrie in the finals???
No that was it. There was still a minute left to play after Kyrie’s shot and I was terrified of the Warriors’ shooting. The 2009 team will always be my personal favorite and 2009 Lebron the best player I have ever seen. Too bad Mike Brown was the coach as Vintage said and too bad Jammer freaking Nelson and Courtney Lee and Richard Lewis and Hero Turkoglu could not miss all series.
A shame Mike Brown couldn’t figure out how to stop Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Hedo freaking Turkoglu while having MVP LeBron on his team.
2019 NBA Mock Draft: Jarrett Culver on the rise after combine; skipping workouts doesn’t hurt Zion Williamson
https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2019-nba-mock-draft-jarrett-culver-on-the-rise-after-combine-skipping-workouts-doesnt-hurt-zion-williamson/
So, CBS Sports says Culver is good at a lot of things, but not elite at any of them… which is what the above article says of Hunter. Is it safe to say neither of them are impact players, or that the Cavs have their work to do?
I don’t think either of them are ‘impact players’, in the sense they both will need some time. I think both are potentially good NBA players after development. I wouldn’t expect either of them to be great as rookies.
I think they can be impact players…. Culver can do that by improving his shooting… Hunter can do it by being more aggressive on offense and refining his ball-handling.
Ideally if you’re taking one of those two I would expect them to be solid defensively their first year. Rookies are not always bad defensively. Ball was above average as a perimeter defender his rookie year. With these two guys I have to hope they are average defenders coming in, since that is a big part of the reason to draft either of them. Defense is seemingly the skill I would think both would be best at as rookies. That’s about it, except I have to hope Hunter is ready to hit a decent percentage of open threes when he… Read more »
NDEPENDENCE, Ohio — “This is Koby’s Show.”
That’s how Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert explained the hiring of Coach John Beilein.
Koby is Koby Altman, the Cavaliers general manager.
Gilbert is an owner who has pushed for some coaches to be hired (David Blatt and Mike Brown, Part 1). In other cases, he went with the choices of the front office (Byron Scott, Tyronn Lue and Mike Brown, Part 2).

This Bucks Raptors series looks a lot like the Cavs Raptors series in 2016 in the sense that it doesn’t really seem in doubt who is gonna win the series but the Raps got two wins in their homecourt regardless. Remember the Biyombo game when he had something like 25 boards? I am sure the Magic do because they paid him 18 million after that.
Anyway, I still don’t see a world where the Raptors advance.
Prior to game 4, Zach Lowe pointed out some interesting trends that were problematic for the bucks, but that had sort of been masked by things like poor execution of transition d by the raptors subsequently leading to a ton of easy transition buckets for the bucks. The poor transition d being things like raptors making simple and fixable mental mistakes. The most interesting part of that article was that the easy transition buckets masked that the bucks were scoring 80 points per 100 possessions against the raptors half court d. That is a pretty bad rate, especially against the… Read more »
surprised but pleased TOR brought series back to even at 2-2.. should be a heck of a 3 game series.. gotta believe that neither team comes out of 7 game series and beats a rested GS.. i would say neither wins more than 2 games.. the 7/11 boys are just too talented..
Everyone looks good on the highlight reels.
amazing.. i just figured it out.. lowry is actually an incredibly skilled magician.. because seemingly on cue, he can do these disappearing/re-emerging tricks (“now you see him.. now you don’t”).. consider me impressed.. david coppafeel move over
Great profile. I’ve read several different articles about Hunter already but this was by far the most well rounded and complete assessment I’ve seen. It fills in the gaps nicely and makes me feel like I now have a pretty good grasp on what he offers as a potential pick.
Thanks!
Thanks, Ryan!
Anyone know why there is so much hype for a KP Jr who played 21 mpg in 21 games and only started 9 as a freshman and averaged 9 points? He has good shooting splits. Good height. Ok per 40 numbers. I know nothing about this kid. For some reason until today I thought he was Michael Porter Jr’s younger brother because I thought Michael Porter Jr had a younger brother who was going to be another high level college freshmen this year. Apparently that is Jontay Porter who also went to Mizzou as a freshmen this year. Dumb on… Read more »
I’ve just watched clips of him. Good step back three, good finisher, not ZOMG FINISHER!!, really athletic. Looks like he may be a bit of a ball hog, but perhaps that is unfair…you always get a sense of that watching clips of a player. As NBA ready a body as you generally see with players his age. Getting suspended by his team is not a red flag I really want to take on with the 5th pick, especially with such a young team. I could see him being a Jimmy Butler type, best case…all these lottery guys are tantalizing when… Read more »
Agreed MikeO… good assessment.
Ok wowser. Just watched these highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4OxJd279ms His level of ball handling, shotmaking in traffic, and off the dribble j ability are things you can’t improve to that level in most prospects. Gotta say this kid does appear to have a pretty ridiculous ceiling as far as scoring. His athleticism is pretty elite in that bunch of highlights. He also makes some pretty spectacular passes in drive and dish, kickouts, and passes to cutters in that. Not saying they should take him at 5, but they should maybe try to trade up if he falls. He looks to have top… Read more »
Yeah, the thing is that his talent isn’t the issue… it’s whether he does things that contribute to winning. His team didn’t win in a terrible conference. And I’m not sure he makes plays that contribute to winning, other than making tough shots and the occasional flashy pass. To his credit, it appears that he’ll be OK defensively, but with his athleticism, he could be much better.
Yeah that is why I wouldn’t necessarily gamble on the 5th pick. But I also have no real eye test for him other than his best plays which show a ton of skill/talent. Without having watched a number of full games, I have no idea what his actual contributions are. I don’t even know if they played a single good team this year. Whoever takes him will obviously have a better idea with actual scouting, workouts, and interviews. Of course we won’t be privy to any of that. Still he is a guy I would definitely take a flyer on… Read more »
BPM says he’s passable defensively, and not nearly as good on offense that his highlights show. And I’d say his counting stats aren’t even that good either, other than his FG% and 3pt FG%… which are very good considering the tough shots he takes. They did play a couple of good teams, they got blown out by Texas Tech, in which he was matched up against Culver and did OK, not great… and he really didn’t stop Culver either. I agree with the general sentiment about taking a flyer on him after 5, but depends on how much it costs… Read more »
Looking at the teams in the spots that he probably will fall, I doubt we have enough to move up. No real big markets looking to take on expiring deals. Though maybe you could find a home for TT plus expiring JR, plus the other first rounder. Probably not though. We don’t really have guys that are tradeable assets outside the expirings and the few core guys we want to keep.
yup… I was thinking the same thing, thanks for that. Dang…. was thinking there was a real opportunity to parlay some of those expirings.
I was thinking Miami, but they are capped to hell. Good god they have some bad contracts. Boston and the nets might be the only other players. Maybe they could be players in 2020-2021, which would fit them dealing for expirings this offseason. Doubt it is enough to move all the way up to 13. I don’t know the details on Jr but I think it could be waived this summer and count for only 4 mil cap hold. Not enough for Boston. Certainly not enough for Miami this summer to make any difference. Nets could renounce Carroll and Dudley… Read more »
Whoops. Never mind. They would have to trade someone already signed for 55-57 mil practical cap of which they have Allan Crabbe (18 mil, possible), or a host of their young core pieces on nice contracts for next year. So unlikely.
And a scouting video that points out his weaknesses you won’t get from the other one.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OKvti9EcAqA
Well guess the other one didn’t post, but was the Frankie vision highlights on youtube.
He’s shot maker with nice handles. Biggest negative would be that he takes bad shots and appears to be a chucker that’s reluctant to pass, although he didn’t have much to pass to at USC.
I see Kyrie Irving when I watch him… with less willingness to pass lol.
A 6’6″ Irving is sort of intriguing. But if he is that much of a hog he’d better be a real #1 franchise scoring option.
He’s a great shotmaker… possibly the best one of the draft. He’d be best in isolation situations or in finishing situations.
There’s a huge red flag with mentality though… getting suspended and 50% FT shooter, which to me is an abject failure in mental focus for him.
Yeah that is scary. Didn’t even look at FT%. Kid apparently had a rough childhood.
Yeah Dad was murdered… that’s really tough.
Agreed about FT%. I feel like it is often a red flag that slips under the radar…
Though Cedi’s FT% jumped up like 20 percent since his rookie year (but that’s also because his low rookie percentage was probably nerves and a fluke. He definitely shot better than that in Turkey).
Oops! I thought KP Jr. was Michael Porter Jr.’s brother too! At least neither of us is the only one.
To me, the biggest point in favor of Hunter’s upside may have been the National Championship game. He was an absolute monster when his team needed him most, and drastically outplayed Culver.
Thanks for bringing it up, was just going to say the same thing.
He was a beast, but I am a little wary of guys that have one giant game and an otherwise decent tourney. That was a big thing with Derrick Williams wasn’t it? Though D will had a very productive sophomore year overall.
That said I still like him as a prospect.
Good write-up… important point about Hunter’s age, I didn’t know that. I would disagree with the notion his stats are “somewhat concerning”… if you watch UVA play, no one on that team will ever have impressive stats, their play style prohibits it. Their goal is to grind things to a halt and prevent the other team from scoring 60 points. For comparison, Hunter scored at a higher clip than Joe Harris in the same system when comparing their first two years in college. Also, Hunter was ACC 6th man of the year as a freshman, DPOY in the ACC this… Read more »
Low steals and low fouls are a concern for me. I would rather take whomever is left from Barrett, Clarke, and Culver.

I’m honestly somewhat surprised that Sexton didn’t make the first team. I know his PER didn’t match up with the guys ahead of him but I thought the durability that raised his counting stats to First Team level would have moved the bar a bit. JJJ missing 24 games, approaching a third of the season, felt like it would’ve kept him out of the first team. Maybe I’m just being a homer, and I definitely see Sexton’s many flaws, but I feel like he’s been getting a bit snubbed. Well, hopefully it will motivate him like the Rising Stars snub.… Read more »
BELIEVE HUNTER IS A SAFE PICK——COULD POSSIBLY BECOME A REAL GOOD PRO——–I AM IN FAVOR OF CAVS PURSUING THE RECENT RUMOR OF GOING AFTER BARRRETT
Just don’t think they have the ammo.
Yeah, Barrett almost certainly ends up in NY or gets traded to NO. Either way we probably can’t offer anything NY would want to get him if they can’t use him to get AD. And if NY took someone else for whatever reason, he probably gets taken by LA and traded for AD.
Really really great breakdown on hunter, Mike. That’s how I see him too. High floor player: Thad young 2.0. Rather have Clarke the guy whose block and steals numbers are off the charts.
I’m getting a vibe that they are going to go for ‘home run’, or shock and awe, with Reddish/ Porter Jr/ Bol Bol. I don’t like any of those guys much. Porter is athletic and talented, but I wouldn’t want to take a flyer on a guy who may be a knucklehead.
I get the same feeling too. Maybe they’ll play it safe with the number 5 pick, but i get the overwhelming feeling that they are going to do something very high risk high reward draft night. I also keep feeling more and more that the Cavs will not be actually picking fifth in this draft.
Take the double. We need players who elevate the team. Make sure the guy you get at #5 makes the team better. No whiffs. The guy projects as a 3-4, not a wing, judge the handles in that context. Thaddeous Young type with a better shot but not as good on the boards. The only way this team can win is by playing smart, efficient, team oriented ball. And by playing better D. Hunter checks all those boxes. If you want to take a swing, that is what #26 is for. See if you can move up into late lotto/late… Read more »
I agree with your reasoning. Take Hunter at #5, then try to move up in the draft and take your flyer with that pick. If the next Kawhi or Giannis is in there, no one will know anyway, so he’ll still be there.
Thanks for the write-up, Mike. Definitely won’t be disappointed if Hunter is who we end up with for the 5th pick.
I concur. I think there is real possibility he will be available at 5.
Just for reference, De’Andre Hunters steals per game were at .6 for 18-19, I believe Mike meant “same number of steals”.
