Finals Live Thread: Warriors @ Raptors, Game 1
2019-05-30It’s that special time of the year, the NBA Finals. They feel different though this go around. This year, for the first time in eight , the kid from Akron isn’t making an appearance. This year, for the first time in four, the Cavs aren’t in it. And, the Warriors don’t have home court advantage. As the Notorious B.I.G. once said, “Things done changed.”
As Cleveland natives or sympathizers, we no longer have a rooting interest outside of the Raptors beating the only team to ever lose with a 3-1 lead, you know, the Warriors. Because, never forget history and grudges.
Anyways, here are some predictions for this year’s Finals from the Cavs: The Blog staff.
David Wood: Raptors in 7. The Warriors are still damn good, as evidenced by their destruction of the Blazers, sans Kevin Durant. But, the Raptors are just good enough defensively to give them a hard time. Kawhi Leonard might be the only guy in the league who can theoretically frustrate both Stephan Curry and Durant. Danny Green works well on Klay Thompson. He has that Spurs’ focus off the ball. Pascal Siakam can give it a go on any players the Warriors throw on the floor. The Warriors will finally face a team that can stop with them, and they’re down one of their best players. Sound familiar? Remember the 2015 Cavs taking the Warriors to six without both Irving and Love. Just like that series, I think the team that probably should win doesn’t. Good luck goes away. We finally see a series.
This is my illogical non basketball view: When I think of the Warriors, I always think of the movie with that title. I then immediately picture Curry and Green as members of the Punk gang because they’re punks, and I could never ever associate them with the actual innocent Warriors gang. As best as I can recall, the Punk gang all had on overalls. That is just not a good look if you’re taking on the Raptors, who I imagine as their name suggests would just be flying dinosaurs. Imagine the length of Siakam’s dino-talons. Those overalls the Warriors wear would provide the perfect straps for any Raptor to pick them up by and then promptly drop to the ground for victory. If we extend this exercise of judging teams based on their names, it sort of makes sense that the Cavs only prevailed once against the Warriors. In previous seasons, the matchup of a Punk vs. a Cavalier wasn’t that even. Think flick blade knives and bats going up against muskets. The musket is just too slow. This year the illogical matchup isn’t even close to being even.
Nate Smith: I know I picked Dubs in six on the pod, but I’m going full on 2007 Cavs here. Listen. The Bucks were a point from being up 3-0, but they couldn’t do it. Why? Cuz their non-freak players couldn’t hit shots. Playoff Draymond is pretty much playing like the the bowling ball version of Giannis in transition, and while I like Brogdon an awful lot, Klay and Steph are vastly superior to Brogdon and Middleton as shooters, especially in the clutch. Point Donkey will find them. Add in Iggy>>>Bledsoe and the fact that Kerr isn’t going to run the same dopey ball screen oriented sets over and over again and let Nick Nurse outcoach him, and it’s gonna be a boat race. The Bucks should’ve won that series but absolutely melted down. Golden State will do no such thing.
The Dubs, and especially Dray will be playing not to beat the Raptors, but to embarrass them. Why? Because embarrassing the Raptors is the best way for Dray to drive home the point to KD that the Warriors absolutely do not need him and his petulance. The Raps will try to go full Delly on Curry and try to make everyone else beat them. They will. This years’ MVP will be Draymond Green.
Benjamin Werth: As much as I would love to pick the Raptors in 7, I will be boringly pragmatic and take the Dubs in 6. If the Raptors can maintain their defensive discipline, they absolutely are good enough to win the championship. Well, assuming their role players hit open shots, that is. Fred VanFleet isn’t likely to shoot as well as he did in the Eastern Finals, but then Danny Green isn’t as likely to shoot as terribly either. I think this will be a terrifying series for Steve Kerr. Playing Durant before he is completely healthy is probably a must against a talented Raptors team. It also could be the wrong decision. If the Raps win Game 1, I will immediately regret my pick.
Eli Kim: Warriors in 6. The Raptors will benefit from their home court advantage and KD not being fully healthy. I predict the Dubs will at least split the first two games and then the other game they lose will be when KD comes back and throws off the chemistry a little bit. As much of a cool story VanFleet is, there’s literally only one player on the court he can guard (Steph) and even that is a mismatch. The Raptors are also very “big-centric” with Siakam, Ibaka, and Gasol probably being the three best players after Kawhi and Lowry and everyone knows how the Warriors can exploit bigs (so look for whoever VanFleet guards to be in a pick and roll).
If Anunoby comes back healthy and Danny Green gets out of his slump, there’s a chance it could go to 7 but as currently constructed, the Raptors don’t have the requisite matchups to win (even at full strength). Maybe Kawhi can slow down Durant when he comes back, or put Steph in some tough situations, but who is going to guard Klay/Draymond? Who will Lowry guard if Kawhi guards Steph for some portions (a 7 inch taller Klay or Draymond or do they try to hide him on Iguodala?). The matchups are just not in the Raptors favor (or really anyone’s favor in the NBA).
Tom Pestak: Warriors in 5 without Durant.
Justin May: I’m taking the Raptors in 7. Why? Because someone needs to and I’m tired of the Warriors. I mean, who isn’t? But for real, KD could be way more hurt than any of us might expect. A strained calf is no joke depending on its severity. If he can’t go for a chunk of the series then Kawhi won’t be stopped. I actually like that the Raptors are “big-centric”. We’ve seen a blueprint for what can beat the Warriors. Slowing things to a crawl and junking things up is the Raptors’ best shot at getting the trophy. It will allow them to work through screens to get Steph on Kawhi and Kawhi will feast.
It continues to amaze me how current NBA teams fail to go at guys in foul trouble.
Taking advantage is good if you aren’t forcing bad shots just to try to get fouls.
Literally have to play near mistake free basketball for a full 48 minutes against this Warriors team. I feel like Toronto has been in control this entire game but they’re only up 7
They are almost never out of games if they don’t want to be. A 7 point lead definitely isn’t safe against them.
Rash of dumb fouls after going up 11. Gasol’s 4th. 2 on Steph.
Good timeout by nurse. Cleanup the slop on d before too late.
Bad ref calls have favored the Dubs (Klay travel, no kick ball, Green mauled no call). Only one for Raps (mystery foul on Iggy on Siakam slam attempt).
Curry not getting his usual bs continuation calls
Curry shoots such an effortless free throw.
GS 17-17 on FTs…that includes a bunch by Bray…
19-19 now…
Warriors still right there. Ton of time left. Leonard looks a little slow/gimpy tonight.
Wow Siakam!!!
Curry flail fail
Siakam!
Gasol and Siakam spectacular tonight.
That Lefty fast break layup by siakam wasn’t a cakewalk. Nice soft adjustment at the end. This is the siakam who will be a star next year.
TORONTO BABY!!!
Green with four fouls. Kerr can leave him in because there’s zero chance the referees will call a fifth on him this quarter.
Siakam should go at him.
Siakam so big tonight…finishing almost everything…
4 on Bray…get the fifth…
Danny green got utterly mauled. Bad when the TV picks up the slap. 5 point swing
Raptors forcing the issue after both makes and misses
Gasol has been utterly massive on d
Fantastic pass, Siakam
Siakam got lucky there. Was a bad call. Bricked dunk before any contact.
Siakam showing out like he was in the earlier rounds
He has a few incredibly polished post moves…
I’m torn, I hate GS soooo much I just want someone to beat them. Then again, looking at it from a historical perspective, it would be cool if Cleveland was the only team to ever beat them. Regardless, GS is going down in history as one of the best teams ever. God it pains me to write that.
How you define greatest ever? Top 10? If they lose this, 3 in 5 years, with some major injury help every title year, but with bad injury luck this year, that is probably where they are. 1. Russell’s Celtics. 8 straight. 9 in 10. 11 in 13. 2. Jordan’s Bulls. 6 in 8 (6 in 7 with MJ). 3. Mikan’s Lakers 6 in 7 (1 NBL) 4. Magic/Kareem Lakers 5 in 9. 5. Duncan’s Spurs 4 in 8 (+1 later). 6. Bird’s Celtics 3 in 6. With best record 6 in 7. 7. Warriors 3 in 4/5. (if they lose).… Read more »
But if they win and get 4 in 5, I would say top 5. Best team since Jordan’s Bulls
I don’t even count Mikan Lakers. Was the league even integrated back then?
Also some of those teams played competition that I wouldn’t call the best. Jordan bulls (still up there, but below magic Lakers for me), Shaq/kobe Lakers.
I will say it again, if KD does not play, I think the Dubs lose.
Toronto’s D is real. Of course, Curry + KD + Klay is like a cheat code.
Nice to see Cousins get to play.
Kawhi with an off half (by his standards) and Raptors still up 10. Awaiting Splash Bros to heat up in 3rd.
And cut down their sloppy turnovers. 10 at the half.
No reason to pressure Curry full court. FVV way out of position leads to Curry blowing by Gasol for foul. Big three by Green with a hand in his grill.
Really good half for Raps…up ten….
Impressive close to quarter.
Big break for a sloppy pass/possession by Kawhi on raps getting ball back and Looney foul on Gasol.
Lol…Bray out of control for his third…
How many games you got before he gets a tech?
I don’t know…this is the kinder gentler Bray now…I bet he starts to lose it if the Dubs get down in the series…I say over under 4 games…
I say if they lose tonight and game 2 and game three is close, he blows up then.
Dumb foul by Kawhi for his third…
He/they have much less margin for error as far as foul trouble. May be a big factor in this series.
Damn. 3 on Kawhi. #2 was needless.
Green got away with a forearm to Siakam’s midsection. Siakam’s still finished.
Raps on a bit of a run. Up 7.
Win the last 2.
Curry flop fail…
Oof. Bad breakdown by raptors. Can’t give guys like Iggy wide open lanes. Siakam still scorimg
Warriors sloppy still
Raptors getting sloppy
Both teams prety sloppy…
Yep
Ooh. Ugly couple ft misses by FVV
The rare Curry offensive foul…
Bout 5 fouls on that Kawhi drive. Amazing he had the strength not to turn it over and get the shot off.
Non-calls for GS are just as damaging or more so than the flops
Another great pass by dmc
Fred showing up tonight…
Tech/phone commercials make me sick.
Great pass by dmc. Green not ready to shoot. Bailed out by ibaka o board.
Lol…Jerebko power airball…
Raptors have to make hay while Boogie is out there…
They have to really beat up the non-Curry/Draymond/Thompson lineup…
I will say Raptors probably need to win both of their first home games if this is going to go 6.
If they win the first teo, I bet they win the series…
Maybe. I think GS can win pretty much anywhere. Not sure about Toronto in GS. We’ll see.
Toronto has had wide wide wide open shots. Have only been quasi successful in making them. But then again they don’t have the most consistent outside shooters. GS has missed some they probably normally make. Toronto defense has been ok. No huge breakdowns so far that I can think of.
Toronto going with the seven-seconds-or-less offense instead of making the Warriors work.
Can’t afford to give GS non box out o boards like that. Killer against GS.
This may be a game where Ibaka decided in advance he was going to stink…trick or treat Serge…
If Siakam can hit threes consistently again Toronto is dangerous.
Looney a non factor so far…not surprising since he’s going against a much better front line now…
Can’t believe it they called a moving screen on GS. Wasn’t Green though. If they call one on green hell has frozen over.
Lol. Blatant travel
That was just stupid…
Klay?
Raptors going to have to realize how many fouls refs call for green. Can’t give the refs benefit of the doubt.
Nice flop, Bray…
Warriors had 4 guys within 10 feet of Kawhi on a postup. Raptors will need to make threes from his passes off double, triple, quadruple teams.
Will be a short series if Curry gets a bunch of flop fouls on J’s. Didn’t think about that. GS probably will get a ton of questionable flop calls.
HE FELL DOWN JOHN B HE OBVIOUSLY GOT FOULED GEEEEZ!!!
Cheapo on Kawhi on a Curry shot…I loath that call…
VERY GOOD ARTICLE BY R.J. / GREAT INSIGHT BY HIS EXPERIENCE AS BOTH PLAYER AND ANALYST/ MEDIA PERSON
RAPTORS SWEEP —MAN THIS GREAT LAKES MEXICAN LAGER IS GOOD / KEEP THEM LAGERS COMING !!! : )
With KD out, Lowry takes Curry, Green takes Klay, Kawhi takes Iggy, Siakam Dray, Gasol Looney.
If Curry gets going, or Dray does, Kawhi moves over.
All of the Raps starters + Ibaka are good/smart defenders. No need to shake things up initially. Plus let Kawhi rest as much as you can early.
The Rap’s aint Portland. If KD does not play, Raps win.
Hoping like heck the Warriors get fully impeached by the Raps, but I’m not holding my breath. Pass the popcorn.
MikeO I am most certainly a betting man and I picked Warriors in 5. I hope I jinxed them even though I will lose my bet.
Hah, I hope so, too!
When did Richard Jefferson start writing for ESPN? Great article with interesting reference to Lebron :) http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/26856174/why-glad-free-agency-over
I am hopeful for Raps in 7. If I were betting, probably Dubs in 6. Raps role players better not be terrified to shoot in this series, as they were in game 7 vs Sixers. I doubt Durant plays in the series. Boogie will bleed points any minutes he plays. I look for Bray to look more human here, as he isn’t going against overmatched dudes this series.
Wowser. Y’all are all over the map. Interesting. I think this is the second best team the non-kd warriors have faced. Cavs pushed them to 6 in 2015 without two of our best players. That was probably close to as good of a defense as Toronto can be at their peak who has a much better offense than that team without Ky and Kev.
