Podcast 205: Dark Knight Endgame
2019-05-29Not a ton happening with the Cavs as we careen into The Finals, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t interesting things to talk about happening around the Association. So, if you’ll forgive our Memorial Day weekend coverage lapse, as we spent more time hanging with our respective families in lieu of deep dive profiles into upcoming draft prospects, hopefully you’ll enjoy some humorous deviations.
Nate and EG hung out for a spell in the podcast booth to muse a bit about the draft, reflect on a wild Eastern Conference Finals, discuss potential Finals outcomes… and, of course dish gleefully about Rob Pelinka’s Dark Knight of the soul and dig through the newest layers of the raging dumpster fire that is the Los Angeles Laker franchise. We also finally have a long chat about Avengers: Endgame and a bit of Game of Thrones finale to boot… Spoilers Ahead!!!
So, enjoy the video evidence of Rob’s tall tale here…
And, as always, check us out below, on Anchor.fm, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Tunein, or Spotify.
SIMMO TOTALLY AGREE ——HOW IS THE NEW BORN DOING—KNOW YOU HAD SOME ANXIOUS MOMENTS—HOPE/ PRAY ALL IS WELL !!! : )
All good now Nomad – little guy is now 3 months (7 weeks adjusted age), putting on weight well and has just started “cooing” and smiling. Couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Thanks for yours and CtB’s support!
In all seriousness, the main reason I think KD would want to play part of this finals run with the risk of re-injuring?
His legacy.
If GSW win without him, all the controversy about him joining this team will resurface, along with the scent of illegitimate titles. Let’s not kid ourselves, he has demonstrated how closely he monitors public opinion. I can’t see him limping off to another team without playing for GSW ever again, particularly if they win.
I could see it. He just needs to be really careful. His injury history is not so good.
I think he’s done. That was a bad injury… they’re just making people wonder to make Toronto prepare for him.
There’s a good chance you are right CLF.
This may be correct. But if they get down 0-3, don’t you roll the dice anyway at that point? If he is close, anyway?
I mean, nothing to lose at that point.
I am loving the Laker dysfunction. Laker exceptionalism. Also the light shining on how Bron contributes to it.
I mean, as a fan of a particular franchise, wouldn’t you want a star who sticks with you (Duncan, Kobe, Bird, Russell, Mikan, Magic, Curry, Dirk, etc) than one who bails on you despite team success (Bron)?
Anyway, despite this, I could still see them landing AD in a trade or a 2nd tier FA (Butler, Cousins, Kemba). Or both.
THANK YOU JOHNB—I WAS WONDERING THE SAME THING ABOUT SILVERN’S LAKERS COMMENTS ——“THEY WILL FIGURE IT OUT “——WITH WHAT A WHOLE LOT OF HELP FROM THE NBA / SILVERN ——-DOES MAKE YOU THINK !!!!
I find Silver commenting about the future decisions or predicaments of specific franchises or players (e.g. FA decisions or franchise dysfunction) to be odd. Did Stern comment about specific teams like that? I don’t remember him doing so.
No. He just frozen enveloped Ewing to the knicks and nixed Chris Paul to the Lakers
Yeah. He definitely interfered with Paul. I don’t remember him publicly commenting on stuff though. And to be fair, weren’t the hornets temporarily owned or managed by the league at that point?
Yes, they were.
He was the Hornet’s owner rep at the time. Not like he vetoed a trade by two independently owned franchises. I had no problem with that.
Also I don’t believe in conspiracies. Though this is weird.

People blab too much to to many people.
too many people
As per the Laker article, I’ve had the experience of a new boss coming in and the first thing he says is, “you can all be replaced”. Shocker — this does not motivate people, except to get everyone to work on their resumes and start looking for something new. I loved Magic as a player, but ouch, what a dumb way to kick off your term as a leader.
Yeah, that magical moment where the employees are reminded “this employer can replaced”.
Certain “truths” cause only harm when said aloud. It’s like taking your kid to a funeral and reminding them “you’re going to die someday! You never know when! you might even die today! There is no escaping it little one!” Yeah, it’s honest, and it’s part of growing up, but there are better ways to convey that truth.
Not all truths are good truths, especially when spoken.
Of course all employees can be replaced, but wait for them to deserve it before you threaten it.
I was amazed how that article treated LeBron and everyone associated with him (other than Rich Paul) with such kid gloves. Sure, the article was more about Pelinka/Magic/Buss than about him directly but all of us CtBers know the two sides of having LeBron on your team better than anyone and I don’t think you can write an complete article about dysfunction on a LeBron team without at least examining his role. That article made it sound as if Rich Paul just did his thing independent of LeBron. Can’t believe I’m quoting Villain-Goatee Dan Gilbert here, but he knows of… Read more »
Very good point.
Absolutely.
Much of that laker article was a summary of what we already knew. Some of it was fleshing out details like the depth of Pelinka’s lying. There was one paragraph that made me chuckle anew though. “JEANIE BUSS BELIEVES in fate. More specifically, a source familiar with the inner workings of the Lakers who has been in direct contact with Buss told ESPN that Buss believed Johnson was meant to be in his role, that Pelinka was meant to be in his, that James was meant to be a Laker, and whoever is no longer with the organization wasn’t meant… Read more »
It sounds to me like the mind of someone who has inherited a family fortune and has had things fall comfortably into their lap their whole life. It would be easy to believe that “fate” and “destiny” are on your side when no matter how many crazy massive dumpster fire mistakes you make, tou are still rich and powerful beyond measure and have never known a lack of support, reasources, and opportunities. No, this isn’t a “I hate rich people” rant. I just look at the people that inherited wealth, fame, and power without the prior need of real personal… Read more »
Nepotism is bad for business and most everything else.
The flipside is your Dan Gilbert type mentality – ‘hey i made a lot of money therefore i must be good at everything, such as professional basketball team construction and drafting’
True, though immediate history favors Gilbert. 4 straight trips to the finals and one championship beats missing the playoffs. Ego and misplaced expertise beats utter incompetence. If Dan Gilbert fails repeatedly his personal business success and ego will drive him to prove himself right. It seens Jeanie and the Lakers are more likely to whine, talk about Laker’s exceptionalism, and just expect “fate” and “destiny” to work out next time. Can you imagine if Cleveland missed the playoff in 2015? Do you think Pelinka would still be in charge after that massive whiff if he worked for Gilbert? I know… Read more »

This Laker shark show is the best thing going in the NBA. Lebron’s tv/ media branch should create a Kardashian style reality show, call it “Jeanie!!”, and profit. That would be such a money maker they could relegate the Lakers – they certainly deserve it.
So this is the first podcast that I’ve had a chance to listen to within the first couple days it was released.(Usually it’s a few days before I know I can listen to the whole thing in peace) Yay for hearing my (fake) name! I feel (fake) famous! Seriously though, thanks guys, and a fun listen as always. A couple non Cavs comments: I agree about Endgame. Some massive plot holes and as a fan of Agents of SHEILD it annoys me the wrench they threw in the works…but in the whole it was immensely entertaining. A great service to… Read more »
