Live Thread: 2023 NBA Draft
2023-06-22Whelp, unless things change drastically, the first pick is set in stone, and the Cavs will be drafting at 49. I don’t have much hope that the Cavs can draft anyone to help them in the near term, but player trade targets I’m looking at include Delon Wright, Yusef Nurkic, Larry Nance Jr., Nassir Little, Daniel Gafford, Monte Morris, and oh so many more. In case you hadn’t heard, the action already got started with CP3 going to the Warriors for Jordan Poole, and the Zinger going to Boston. There’s a lot to keep track of, but check in all night for the fun. As always, Go Cavs.
Are we gonna get a free agency pod?
I have mixed feelings on this. I liked both Cedi & Stevens. Both guys contributed with Cedi’s streaky shooting & energy and Llama’s toughness & grit. Attributes the team needs. But both guys were fringe rotation guys. We all haveopinions about if JB used them enough, but they were 7th & 8th on the team in minutes.
Strus is also a decent/streaky shooter, but at 6’5″ I don’t think he solves the SF issue and we seem to have a lot of guys at 6’6″ or under (DG, DM, Rubio, Ice, Strus, LeVert) occupying slots 1-3. We are undersized at the 2 already with Mitchell. DG is 0retty diminutive at PG. And Ice/LeVert/Strus are really all 2 guards in my view. Niang & Wade provide some spacing at the 4, but are not real physically imposing on D. Allen & Mobes are too skinny. We need more length & bulk as well. Have not gotten it yet.… Read more »
Good post.
But I was not expecting much this off-season. When your biggest trade chips are Cedi, Stevens, and Wade, and you have only the mid-level, you cannot expect a ton.
Pkus, we flopped so hard in the POs, you cannot get a ring chasing discount from anyone.
NATE ” DROWNING HIS SORROWS IN BEER ” WITH THE TRADING / LOSS OF LLAMA :-)
I feel his pain, and that is totally the reason I am drunk right now 🤣.
AGREE WITH TTM —–LESSER TALENTED PLAYERS ARE SIGNING FOR MORE IN MY OPINION AND THINK SPIDER/ DG WILL HELP STRUS EVEN MORE
I AM THINKING C LEVERT REALLY BACKED UP HIS WORDS ‘ I WANT TO BE HERE “—GUESSING HE COULD HAVE SIGNED TO A BIGGER CONTRACT IF HE WANTED TO
Seems like an overpay for Strus
Maybe on the years. But when you see what everybody else was getting it’s really not bad
Definitely would’ve rather spent it on Herb Jones… wonder what it would’ve taken to pry him out of NOP.
Agreed
Well, he signed for 4/$54 with NO. More than the mid-level. So he was out of our price range AND likely never really on the open market.
I don’t think a Herb Jones/Barnes vs Niang is really a fair comparison. We were always a tier down in what we could afford.
We paid similar for LeVert, but had Bird rights. We couod not offer Jones a similar deal. And Strus was available in S&T because Miami is trying to clear the decks for Lillard.
Wait 4/$54 is less than the Strus signing.
Gotta be at least an FRP, he’s valuable.
and it’s a good situation. I wouldn’t have done it for the Strus haul / deal if I was NOP.
TOTALLY AGREE WITH SIMMO —-STILL NEED A LEGIT BACK UP POST
Strus for Lamar and Cedi and some 2s. it’s ok
I don’t really know much about Strus. His numbers aren’t much better than Cedi’s and he’s considerably smaller. Is he a solid defender? We’re still so small on the wing.
I think the expectation is that he’ll avoid the mental lapses of Cedi and be a little more consistent. I don’t think we could have afforded a big shooter in FA (Barnes was $18m, Kuz $25m, even Trey Lyles got a deal we couldn’t have matched without S&T, I think).
Hope for maybe a vet min guy or Bates’ development if we need wing size
Struss offers nothing on defense, the Cavs are clearly betting that his shooting and Tower City will make up for his inability to defend… we shall see.
Miami got to the Finals with no interior size & Strus starting along with Kevin Love, so he cannot be THAT bad.
Given what was possible, I think Koby has killed it.
agree. the players themselves might underperform, but they fill needs and are generally high character guys. plus Rubio or Green may contribute.
will miss Cedi’s kamikaze stuff and Lamar’s toughness but I’m definitely rooting for them to kill it in SA
Heat seem to be up to something. They just sent Oladipo to the Thunder. And Gabe Vincent signed with Lakers.
According to Fischer (Twitter link), the Spurs have emerged as a possible third team in a rumored sign-and-trade deal that would send Heat free agent shooting guard Max Strus to the Cavaliers. Sources tell Fischer that Cleveland has been looking to offload the contract of swingman Cedi Osman, whom Miami presumably has no interest in taking on. Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reports (via Twitter) that the Heat are aiming to create a trade exception and a future second-round draft selection in any sign-and-trade involving Strus.
Would be bummed to see Cedi go, but that would be great if he winds up with the Spurs.
Now the question is will JB “trust” Niang enough on defense to play him, or will he join Cedi in the doghouse?
Some non-legit source says Struss to Cavs – 4 yrs/64M
Heard that on NBA tv. That’s fair
That’s one way to get depth.
Love signs 2-yr deal with Heat.
Good for him.
and right
Good.
right
Well, Niang gives us a 4 who can shoot. Taking Love’s spot. And Wade’s. Not a great rebounder or defender, though. But gives us some badly needed frontcourt shiiting and sime experience in high pressure situations with Philly. Definitely in our rotation.
And a reasonable deal with Caris.
We have a small part if the MLE left, and a trade exception under $4 mil. Beyond that, trades 9r vet mins.
Starters: Garland, Mitchell, Okoro (atm), E. Mobley, Allen.
Main bench: Rubio, LeVert, Osman, Niang.
Deep bench: Stevens, Wade.
Fringe roster/2 way: CPJ, Cooper, Merrill, Bates, Travers, Nance, I. Mobley, Diop.
Still need a playable C with size, a starting quality-ish SF, a 3rd PG, and one more makes 15.
It would be a dream come true if the Travers 3 point improvement stuck. I think he probably spends one more year abroad tho. Honestly I would stick with Okoro at the 3 at least until the all star break. That starting lineup is good enough to get us 50 wins and a top 6 seed. Hopefully he takes a leap. Niang and whatever other shooter we sign will give us some lineup versatility come playoff time. Garland, Mobley, Allen, and heck even Mitchell probably all still have some headroom to reach their respective ceilings. Should be a fun and… Read more »
Every word, man. Dap.
Travers lives just down the road from me, I’ll have a word to him 😬
OK! get on it!
Just have a pile of guys to try for the bench: Okoro, LeVert, Wade, Strus, Cedi, Niang, Green, Rubio, etc. something will work
Ingles 2/22. Old but useful- iono if great for us but a decent value for ORL if can move
Unless the Cavs work out a sign-and-trade agreement with Philadelphia, Niang’s former team, this signing will come out of Cleveland’s non-taxpayer mid-level exception and will hard-cap them at $172.3MM for the 2023/24 season.
As Bobby Marks of ESPN tweets, the Cavs – who also reached a contract agreement with Caris LeVert, are still projected to be about $13.5MM below the tax and $20.5MM below the first apron, so they have some flexibility to continue making moves. They’re still looking into the possibility of acquiring free agent swingman Max Strus via sign-and-trade, tweets Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.
Who would they trade?
Cedi/ Wade, most likely.
Cavs were shopping Cedi and Wade, both of whom I’d rather have than Strus or Niang ironically LMFAO
Yeah if it means losing Cedi/Wade then just stand Pat with Niang.
I would move Cedi for him. Wade I want to see what we have but I could be OK with it
Cedi cannot play the 4, or almost never, though I may agree with you there.
Wade? No chance. I get all sorts of pumpkin vibes, not Cinderella. Frog, not a prince.
Elon doesn’t let people check Twitter without an account. What a turd!
got that right.
“Tesla Turd” has a good ring to it, can hang with the “Golden Turd”

YESSIR
Nice pick up!
In Korby we trust (ish)
If they are also getting Strus (personally, still awaiting hard confirmation on that), these are overpays to some extent, but I understand why. They desperately, desperately need guys who can stretch the floor and hit a corner three.
The Minivan!!! Awesome.
A scenario in which the Cavaliers sign Georges Niang and acquire Max Strus – either via sign-and-trade or by signing him outright – is being viewed as “increasingly likely,” according to Stein (Twitter link).
Wow!
LeVert 2/32, perfect
Nice!
It doesn’t appear that Diakite received a qualifying offer.
that is a mystery to me.
I saw some last year’s preseason game highlights, and he looked like he should be a starter.

I thought the two way provision that was added might apply to him.
Good. Best of luck!
yup and yup!
SL roster out:
PG: Sharife Cooper, Craig Brown Jr,
SG: Sam Merrill
SF: Emoni Bates, Luke Travers
PF: Isiah Mobley, Pete Nance
C: Khalifa Diop
Also:
G: Bothwell, Green, Henderson Jr., Shuler
F/C: White
The team basically shat the bed in the POs. DG, JA, and Mobes in particular. JB did not cover himself in glory, either.
But we were never a real contender this season, the fun of the 9-1 sarts sans DG notwithstanding.
The bet we made with the Mitchell deal was that the Core Four could grow into a title contender via internal improvement with the right (affordable) pieces around them.
That calculation has not changed. And correctly. DM, EM, DG, and JA are not going anywhere. No way we blow it up after just one year. That would be silly. After another flameout? Then maybe we get some changes to the core 4 ir the coach. But for now, see how they improve/react/learn from what happened last year.
The question becomes the other pieces. We have limited draft assets, no cap space, and the mid level exception. Again, the hope is for internal improvement. And I think that is largely the right play, given the lack of options.
LeVert is wildly inconsistent offensively but is a nice swiss army knife guy who gives good effort defensively at multiple spots. He really got into a groove spot shooting after the ASG. But I do not trust his offense. Still, for $15-$18 mil, I do not hate it. Okoro. I really thought that game winner vs Brooklyn might propel him on, then he got hurt and JB obviously did not trust him vs NY. But I keep him and keep playing him. Still our best perimeter defender. If that 3 PT% climbs to the point he is more willing and… Read more »
Bottom line, I do not think either guy is a starting quality SF at the moment. Though each has value. LeVert is closer, but is so inconsistent offensively and you eant to let Okiro develop more. Both struggle with bigger SFs, and Okiro gives us an all non-shooter FC. Plus, we already have a small backcourt and a skinny PF/C combo, an undersized SF means we can be at a length deficit 1-3 and a bulk deficit 4&5. NY killed us on the glass. But Miami is small & they made the Finals. With better shooting, it can happen. Plus… Read more »
We need shooting everywhere, particularly frontcourt. Where size/bulk is also needed. But also some scrap. I thought NY cried out for Stevens.
I’d try to retain Levert for reasonable and would keep Okoro. Having both under contract would also represent our best non-core 4 trade chips for later on. If LeVert leaves it does not create cap space.
Keepers: DG, DM, EM, JA.
For now keepers: RR, IO, CL, CO.
That is 6. We just guaranteed Cedi, and I keep him as well unless a clear upgrade trade happens. We need his shooting, even if streaky. Seven.
I also keep Rubio in hopes he bounces back with more recovery time. At worst, he is a good mentor for a young PG (Garland) or a fringe guy like CPJ (whom I really like). At best, he is closer to 2021 Rubio and we are jazzed. If he does not bounce back, we can cut bait after this year. Eight.
Wade absolutely crapped the bed after a strong start. But he theoretically helps us at PF/SF with shooting. I keep him, but I am not sure he is a rotation level guy. I hope he develops into one, but I am not counting on it. Nine.
Stevens is the same. He gives us some defensive versatility & toughness. Not sure he is rotation level, but I do not see a better option currently. Ten.
Starter level: DG, DM EM, JA
Rotation level: RR, IO, CL, CO
Fringe rotation: DW, LS
We badly need a bulky big who, is playable, frontcourt shooting, better wing play, and a 3rd string PG. Between our last 5 (or 6 if Stevens goes) roster spits and 3 2 ways, I want those spots filled.
3rd PG: Bring Neto back or go with Craig Porter Jr. We have CPJ & I love his floor game. Whether on a 2 way or as the outright 3rd PG I want to develop him.
Mobley Sr provides theoretical frontcourt shooting. I think he stays, but as a 2 way or as a rostered guy, IDK. Don’t know if he can hold up defensively at C.
Merrill/Windler, maybe keep one as a shooting prospect.
I like Bates’ potential. Keep him. Roster or 2-way. I lean roster with that ceiling.
My druthers so far:
Starter level: DG, DM, EM, JA
Rotation level: RR, IO, CL, CO
Fringe: DW, LS
Projects on roster/2-way: Bates, CPJ, IM, Merrill.
I haven’t read through all your notes but I’d look to trade DM (he’s gone in two years IMO), and try to get a starting SF and recoup some of the assets we lost. I’d also consider moving JA if they can get a quality starting floor stretching big. Then I’d start DG, CL, new SF, new PF, Mobley. I’d also find a new coach but we know that’s not happening just yet. I think the run it back mentality is flawed and just expecting the players to improve under this system and this coach will result in another first… Read more »
You may indeed be right ultimately. But I think you are bailing WAAAY too early. And if you are gonna bail, I’d trade JA first and DG second. They were the main culprits vs NY, not DG.
But I think expecting a bunch of playoff debutants in their first year together to dominate in the POs, individually or collectively, is a bit off base. It RARELY happens.
And then breaking them up immediately afterwards? Without getting a chance to see how they react? No way. Your are thinking like the Kings.
Not DM, oops.
Give it another year. If guys panic again in the POs, then think about moving pieces or changing the coach. Or both.
You mean trade DM over DG. You have Garland locked up for like 5 years. Mitchell, you only have control over for 2 years.
I would not trade either at this point. But if I am gonna trade one, it would be DG. The fact that he is younger and locked up longer means you’ll get more back. Plus, he’s the one who choked the POs badly. G3 in NY was awful, G4 not too much better.
If he goes all “deer in the headlights” again, you have a guy who shrinks come POs. That’s NOT the guy you keep & try to build around. Or pay $35 mil a year. Ditto JA.
Internal growth could also be a recipe for purgatory.
True, but you cannot bail too early either. I mean, the core has 1 year together. Evan & Okoro are 22. Garland is 23. Allen is 25. Mitchell is 26. Wade is 26. LeVert and Osman 28. I’d focus my MLE on Grant Williams or Prince. Torrey Craig or Trey Lyles would also be on my radar. I want a guy with some toughness who can shoot, rebound some, and defend. I want a playable backup C. Be it our 2nd from last year, a Plumblee, Biyombo, or elder Mobley. Hopefully the MLE + our trafe exception gets us that.… Read more »
Tell it to the Nuggets.
I’m not talking about blowing it up. Just recalibrating.
Eric Gordon on the cheap would be an effective use of a roster spot with a steady veteran presence who isn’t afraid to take a shot.
Isn’t it his turn to go back to Houston or was it New Orleans?
Cavs guarantee Cedi’s 2023/24 salary.
Or “Return of the Cedi”
Taurean Prince is waived by the Wolves.
Would be funny to wind up with Rubio, Levert, and Prince all on this team after the series of trades to get them here/out of here for one another.
Atlanta only wanted a second round pick plus Rudy gay for John Collins? He shoots 50% from the floor and 80 from the line and 35 from 3. How did we not go after him? What am I missing?
Atlanta was basically able to trade Collins’ whole salary into Utah’s cap space, only taking back $6 mil of Rudy Gay. There isn’t really any way for the Cavs to absorb such a large salary without trading one of the core four.
They could’ve packaged Okoro, Cedi, and Rubio for Collins and Kreji… so there were/are way to get around trading the core four for that kind of contract.
Atlanta only took on $6 mil dollars of salary. Maybe they would like to pay Okoro but why would they want the Cedi or Rubio salaries if they’re trying to clear their salary deck?
Cedi on a non guaranteed and Rubio can be stretched/waived at minimal cost or used as aggregated salary for moves that are impending, like Hunter.
I gotta go with the Osmaniac. Cleveland couldn’t compete with what Utah was offering in terms of short and long term cap relief
My point is that they can take on a contract of that size without using the big 4, that’s all.
But where is he gonna play? The 3?
If not, that’s a real expensive backup PF you just hollowed out your bench for (assuming no Core Four used) and now we are pushing the tax line.
There is a reason the Hawks have been trying to trade him for 2 years. And a reason they settled for so little. Hard pass.
Agreed Jake, missed opportunity.
He did not shoot 35% from three last year, he shot 28%. He literally had the worst season of his career. And he has been worse every season since he was suspended for HGH in 2019.its fair to question his long term value.
Good points!!
Daryl Morey reportedly asked for Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley and a first round draft pick for Tobias Harris. I’d give him Robin Lopez for Harris and a Philly first.
” Emoni Bates IMPRESSES at NBA Draft Combine!! ”
15 minutes of Emoni against other combine players and doing combine activities on YouTube . Looks like the kid can hoop a bit lol and definitely can shoot even with hands in his face ..
great. I might be able to talk myself into believing.
looking forward to the summer league games. Here are a few names I have dug up:
Mike Bothwel, Furman, 6-3
Pete Nance, NC. forward.
Craig Porter Jr., Wichita State. guard
Wendell Green Jr., Auburn. guard.
Anyone have Pete Nance on their radar? Any comparison with LNJ?
He would’ve likely been a late draft pick after his freshman year and after his senior year at northwestern
Did a post-grad year at unc and his numbers dropped. His Sr. Year at northwestern he hit 45% of threes on 93 shots.

totally sure that was a joke.
I always like the coach Spins draft prospect videos. Has a good breakdown of Emoni. His analysis makes me think the path forward for Bates is as a spot up bench 3-point specialist with some shot creation upside. That’s quite a different role than he’s used to playing, but maybe the Cavs can mold a solid bench scorer out of his ball-hogging clay?
https://youtu.be/5LevC-V96Ao
Have only watched Bates highlights of the Toledo game where he scored 29 in a row, but that jumper looks pretty damn silky to me. And superb at generating space for himself. As for the slight frame, the comp I keep thinking of isn’t KD (let’s not be ridiculous), but Brandon Ingram. Trying to huff some of your optimism, Nomad!!
those highlights do make one think there is a chance this might fly. still a longshot gamble, but a possible very high payoff.
D Rose on a cheap contract as a Rubio replacement? I don’t hate it.
Do the Cavs have any shot at getting Bruce Brown?
I don’t follow cap stuff or salaries very closely but I get the impression that any of the better free agents we’d really want, Cavs don’t have cap space for and would have to be acquired as part of a sign and trade.
They have the full mid level exception available I believe. That will be @12.5 mil. There will be some decent options in that range, Brown included
Brown isn’t going to be available for the MLE. Dude is gonna get at least 3yrs/$50mil, probably significantly more.

What I like most about the Bates pick is that it’s a real vote of confidence (or at least a show of self-belief) in the Cavs’ culture. We’re a totally different team than we were when we had to send KPJ away despite his talent. Now, with Mitchell — and with Garland and Allen older, and developing into leaders — we can bring in a guy with character questions like Bates and not have to worry that he could poison the waters. If he’s a cancer, he’ll never make it out of the Charge. If he’s ready to grow up,… Read more »
agreed, good post.
Yeah, actually have to say this post made me think. I’ve been a subscriber to the Koby character rule and feeling like it should be enforced. But at some point your culture should become strong enough to be capable of teaching recruits the right way. Thank you worldbfree.
agree. also, although it is hard, you can try to distinguish between immaturity issues vs. lifetime fuckups.

49. Cleveland Cavaliers (via Warriors, Pelicans, Jazz) Emoni Bates | 6-foot-8, forward | 19 years old | Eastern Michigan Vecenie’s ranking: 69. Bates is such an interesting shot creator and shooter at nearly 6-foot-10 in shoes that I would be willing to give him a two-way contract if all the background intel came back clean. It is difficult to find shot creators this gifted. But he must totally change his style of play to make it work. He needs to get better at playing without the ball in his hands. Make an impact when you’re away from the ball. Become… Read more »
and, …, he hasn’t exactly shown a lot of “stick to it”-ness so far.
Maybe the chances of a player having an attitude change are better than the chances of getting taller or learning to shoot.
FWIW he’s been saying the right things on social media a little bit humble even .
Bates has a negative wing span
His official combine measurements were 6’8” with a 6’9” wingspan

Terrible move; Koby should have known the NBA is at its quota of Porter Jr.’s. Craig will be ineligible to play
😂
This was a quality comment 😅
is he a wannabe gangsta ?
Still not liking it. What happened to the plan of avoiding head cases?
I would be worried that his basketball iq is so low that Eastern Michigan’s offense was actually better with him off the court. He’s nowhere near the player he thinks he is.
Odds are extremely high he’s going to be nothing, as it is with all 2nd rounders… but this is the type of thing you should do late in the 2nd round. I would’ve preferred Johnson, but Bates is a guy that will never be afraid to take an open 3 unlike the rest of wings on the Cavs’ roster.
He’ll also never be afraid to take a contested half court shot.
Bring back Andrew Bynum!
Im fine with that after seeing Cav wings shit their pants at the thought of an open jumper.
maybe because they were worried that the coaches short rotation might get shorter yet!
I am in favor of playing more guys, particularly in the early season. I think the early season short rotation gets the Cavs off to a good start, and we all think they are going to make a run. Then in the late season, other teams have better rested core players, and have developed some more help, and the Cavs don’t finish well.
I have never coached at any level, so my gut feeling on this issue might not match reality very well.
No question they were worried, especially Cedi and Wade who ironically were the best shooters the Cavs had at the beginning of the season.
Also agree that there’s no reason not to have a 10 man rotation in the regular season… it’s a slog.

LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOO
A 6’9 guard and of course from Michigan
Eastern! The Eagles are coming!
Like this as a long-shot swing for upside with height and shooting.
Not a fan of this pick, although I am unsurprised. Not because of possible character issues, etc, so much, I just have no confidence he’s an NBA player. But at that position in the draft, whatever, I suppose.
Cavs don’t usually draft well later in the draft, even in the first round. So I doubt this guy is still in the league in 2 years. Although Llama exists so who knows?
But to be fair, most players drafted this late don’t tend to move the needle.
with you on that. got a high ceiling, but a longshot. it’s a crapshoot.

Jett Howard son of Jawan
Amen!
Wemby gonna be a game changer if he can stay healthy.
My pick for best player of the Draft: Amen Thompson. I just love the name, and Jeremias Engelman called him a 6’10 guy who moves like like he’s 5’10.
agree
