CtB Trifecta: Recap, Preview, and Live Thread (or, Old News?)
2023-10-28The Cavs squandered a nine-point lead with less than two minutes left to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against the new darlings of the NBA Oklahoma City Thunder 108-105. Evan Mobley and Donovan Mitchell fumbled the bag late with poor finishing and a turnover to gift this game to OKC. Let’s dive into last night’s takeaways…
1. Donovan Mitchell MVP Agenda still strong, but takes a hit
Spida put the team on his back with another MVP-worthy performance with 43 points, eight rebounds, five assists, five stocks, and a +7 plus/minus in 42 minutes of action. Unfortunately, it was a turnover late in the game that gave the Thunder their lead for good with under a minute that’s gonna stick with Mitchell, as he said in his post-game presser. But in an effort to display some leadership, Spida was super positive after the loss, saying this experience will help the team grow so that they’re prepared for the playoffs. In Spida we trust.
2. Chet Holmgren > Evan Mobley?
Evan Mobley was abysmal in the first half as he got taken to the woodshed by “rookie” Chet Holmgren that figures to be the rivalry of the future between two big unicorns. Mobley stepped up big time in the second half, only to come up short at the end of the game on an unfortunate block call that negated a chance for him to put the game away at the line. But this was the second game in a row of subpar offense from the young big, and Mobley failed to match the defensive impact that Holmgren had on the game (eight stocks to Mobley’s two). The eye test is more alarming when it comes to Mobley, too many times he looks like he has zero plan on offense, and is too skittish on defense. Hopefully this L lights a fire under Mobley. He did start slowly last year, so maybe this is the game that will trigger him to keep his intensity up, especially on defense. Also, while it’s only two games, the offense needs to use Mobley more. Caris LeVert and Isaac Okoro should not be seeing more usage than Evan Mobley. That’s poor offensive design, granted Mobley has not given the team a reason to go to him more yet. Perhaps more touches will get Mobley going in the right direction, stay tuned…
3. Dean Wade Agenda
This is your obligatory “James” Dean Wade propaganda piece. He gave the Cavs rebounding, outside shooting, and played excellent defense when matched up again Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Wade Agenda continues unabated!
4. INVESTIGATE THE REFS
The refs were absolute trash, and apparently this is a plague across the league. It’s not a good look when the refs are calling the game in such an arbitrary fashion that it makes the game damn near unwatchable. In spite of the garbage refereeing, the Cavs can’t lose their poise (looking at you Coach JB Bickerstaff and Max Strus).
5. A quick word on the Thunder
The Thunder is the pet team NBA Twitter has decided to back, and unfortunately it looks like they are legitimate competition for the Cavs to become the best young team in the NBA. Holmgren outplayed Mobley, SGA went toe-to-toe with Spida. Lou Dort, rookie Cason Wallace, and personal favorite Jalen Williams looks like a solid core surrounding their two stars. Josh Giddey has gone from one of the better players on the team to odd man out, which speaks to the improvement the roster has made this season. They also have all the ammo in the world to go star hunting just as the Cavs did with Donovan Mitchell. The question is will they actually pull the trigger, or will Sam Presti continue to collect draft picks like it’s going out of style.
6. Up next, the Indiana Pacers
The walking wounded Cavs will welcome the Indiana Pacers to the shores of Lake Erie, and it could get ugly tonight:
One would think that this is the perfect game for Evan Mobley to establish himself as the superstar everybody thinks he’ll become. If not, the Cavs could be come old news quickly at the hands of two upstarts in OKC and Indiana, Go Cavs!
Tip off is scheduled for 7:30PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio.
It’s gonna be glorious when all our sons are on the floor and in sync. Mobley got a horrific whistle, should have had 40.
The blessing in disguise of Mitchell leaving is that Mobley will get more touches
“Potentially leaving”
Haliburton just iced this. Pacers won’t throw it away like Cavs did last night.
Having your allstar PG in makes a difference!
Some knucklehead fan talking smack to Halliburton before the two 3’s. Not necessary
WTF is this defense.you gotta get to the level of the screen.
That should do it.
Looks like someone in the audience got on Hailburton’s nerves.
Whenever the Cavs get close, the Pacers pull away
JFC guard haliburton
Mobley has been awesome tonight. Giannis third year level play.
I Cavs overhelping and no one coveting weak side shooters.
2 possession game with 6 to go, gotta close now
The Cavs have zero weak side action.
Strus wants it.
Someone needs to.
Agreed, he’s shown me his competitiveness, he’s a dawg
The reason the FO gets a ton of credit from me is that basically every pick / signing has exceeded expectations except for Okoro.
Mitchell should have been first team all NBA. Best move of last offseason.
Allen amazing value
Mobley maybe best player in his draft class-same for DG
Strus exceeding expectations so far by a ton.
Caris really good for a late FRP.
Good moves outnumber the bad by 3 to 1 imo.
Trashcan McConnell with a flop
NIANG FOUND MONEY LETS GOOOOOOO
This season might kill me.
DEAN WADE AGENDA >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I’m so annoyed at the way they built this team. Just how did they not see they were gonna need another playable big. And why did they pay Niang?
really! why didn’t they get Bill Russell instead of Niang?
I think cause he’s dead?
IIRC they kicked the tires on like Mo Bamba and Wood and some other guys, it just wasn’t attractive to those players. Niang just has had a sucky stretch.
Wade and TT as platoon emergency 5s seems to work well enough. Not ideal but for vet min we weren’t getting actual good players.
Niang’s in. This game is over.
Cavs finally get a call going to the bucket.
At least it’s TT instead of Niang.
WTF is with these refs? The Cavs can’t buy a call?
Play Isaiah.
Just caught up to the game. Cavs would be winning if not for George’s Niang who played as poorly as anyone I’ve ever seen in a Cavs uniform. How could Isaiah Mobley possibly be worse than that guy? If Niang plays in the second half, Cavs lose. Full stop.
LETS GOOOOOOOO RAGE TIMEOUT
STRUS IS LOOSE
The NBA’s attempt to get players to play more is off to a rough start
You can’t handle the Strus!!!
Mobley looking much better tonight,
Down 3 starters about expected this. But im already tired of watching Niang. What did the Cavs see in this guy ?!
4/21 in the second; not ideal
IT IS THE FRIGGIN 3RD GAME OF THE SEASON/—-PLAY THE YOUNGSTERS

Put Trashcan McConnell on his ass!
5 points in this quarter – 4.5 min in.
Cavs are being outscored 34-13 in the last 9 min.
These refs blow!
Isaiah Mobley not getting run for Niang is a joke
That flagrant call is BS
Send Niang to The Hague
And Porter Jr
Bench is gonna be trouble
AGREE JASON—- CAVS SHOULD HAVE COMBINED WHAT THEY PAID STRUS//NIANG AND PURSUED//SIGNED OUBRE
Caris bad decision, get the ball to Emoni in that situation… give him a pressure free shot
CARIS LEVERT TO THE RESCUE!!!
MOBLEY COMING ALIVE
WHAT A PASS WADE WHAT A FINISH NIANG
11-1 run in the last 4 min after we went up 27-12 and the Pacers called a timeout.

WITH STARTERS POSSIBLY OUT—-GIVE ME SOME EMONI 👍🏀🍺
YES SIR
NICE JOB CLF——- WTF WITH SPIDA POSSIBLY NOT PLAYING TONIGHT—- IF WE REDRAFTED—- SCOOTIE BARNES OR EVAN—— HATE TO PILE ON EVAN BUT IN MY OPINION HE IS BASICALLY THE SAME PLAYER NOW OFFENSIVELY THAT HE WAS AS A ROOKIE——IS THAT ON HIM // JB //THE DEVELOPMENT COACHES OR ALL THE ABOVE
Appreciate it NOMAD! I’d say all of the above, but really this year’s the key year he should make a leap, he was on a good trajectory before that.
Nice recap. Tonight could get ugly with the starters out.
Maybe JB could come up with an offensive scheme to offset missing all the starters? But I won’t hold my breath.
Thanks Arch, yeah… hopefully there’s some guys ready for the bigger opportunity!
