Playoff Preview/Live Thread: Cavs vs. Celtics, Game 2
2015-04-21Ready for another one? After an off-day to enjoy the afterglow of their first playoff victory since 2010, the Cavs return poised and ready to try and turn the home court double play tonight at the Q, as they look to take Game 2 against the Celtics.
In game one, Kyrie, Kevin, Tristan and Delly all got to experience their first taste of playoff action, and they did not disappoint. Kyrie’s offensive explosion and awesome handle, KLove’s gritty defense and rebounding, TT’s dynamite energy and garbageman skills, and Delly’s hustle and heady play were all on full display in the Cavs 113-100 victory. Old head, LBJ, orchestrated the action, facilitating for the young fellas and preaching patience on the sidelines.
Yes, it was an impressive win for this group’s playoff debut, however, this is the playoffs, where nothing is given and everything is earned. Consequently, there’s still plenty for the Cavs to clean up as they take the floor for Game 2.
Boston started strong in Game 1, and the Cavs will need to work on finding a way to put the clamps on them early this time around. The Celtics had a degree of success with Isaiah Thomas running the pick and roll with Kelly Olynyk (as well as generally running amok against the Cavs guards). While Olynyk and even Tyler Zeller were active and hit a lot of shots early, Thomas was the straw that stirred the drink for the guys in green with 22 points and 10 assists.
During the off-day yesterday, it was announced that Thomas finished second in the Sixth Man of the Year voting to “Sweet” Lou Williams of the Raptors, cementing the fact that most teams had trouble staying with this 5’9 waterbug off the bench. Although, if you ask IT himself, he’ll tell you “numbers don’t lie” and the award should have his name on it.
The Cavs own TnT (the “n” is silent) off the bench finished fifth in the voting. Tristan was pure Canadian Dynamite for the Cavs this season on the glass (eight rebounds per game, 14.4 RP48, and fifth in the NBA at 3.3 offensive rebounds per game), but voters typically show a propensity for giving consideration to more of the instant offense types as 6MOY.
The Cavs will also need to work on taking better care of the ball, as they got a bit sloppy in the second half of Game 1. After giving up the rock just four times in the first half, the Cavs turned it over twice as much in the second as the Celtics turned up their defensive intensity and got back to their ball-hawking ways (with five more steals) to claw their way back into the game late. Smart money is on Boston going back to that well in Game 2 with gusto.
The Celtics are also saying all the right things coming into this one, vowing to execute any bit of insight Brad Stevens can find and exploit on the reels of game film he’s likely devoured since Sunday. Coach Bradley Kent (shouldn’t this guy have a cool nickname by now like “The Thinker” “The Prodigy” or “Zapruder” — feel free to spitball this in the comments and I’ll buy a C:tB t-shirt for whoever comes up with the best one) might also have some extra motivation after finishing a distant fourth in the Coach of the Year Award voting behind Mike Budenholzer, Steve Kerr and Jason Kidd.
(Cheer up though Brad, at least you got some votes unlike our own David Blatt who received just three third place votes.)
The Celtics also are still playing with house money since many expected them to be gambling in the lottery this off-season instead of rolling the dice in the post-season. And since they went on a hot streak to get here who knows… maybe the Clovers think they’ll have a bit of luck on their side for Game 2.
Although, we all know what can happen when you feel lucky…
Count me in the camp that believes in a Cavs sweep for Round 1, especially since they have LeBron James the greatest player of all time (wanna fight about it?). While this game may be close early, I think the Cavs pull away and win by a comfortable margin.
Prediction: Cavs 114, Celtics 94.
Chime in and give your two cents on Game 2…
Turner just punched Lebron in the face……
man NR with 5 steals already!
If he can’t do it with his shot… he’ll do it with his steals
JR***** anything will do
That’s their all night for Kyrie, he can get that shot of those picks easily.
Cue Eddie Murphy laugh…

LeBron looking for the home run play every time.
Just missed twice at point blank and then stared at the basket after the miss…
Bron still just looking to pass…
No Swedish Bird tonight so far…
Let’s play with the energy!!!!
Take care of the ball, take care of the boards, lets go!!! Second half !!
This offseason, after taking care of bringing everyone back, seriously need to acquire scoring off the bench.
need the bench to step it up the 2nd half ——GO CAVS !!!
Allowing too many points to a non playoff proven Celtics team is not a good sign.
It’s mostly on the second chance points…
LeBron has to feed the bigs and move — not his normal game plan.
Lots of favorable bounces for offensive rebounds for Celts. Especially after good d by Cavs
also celtics getting a lot of loose balls as well…can’t imagine that would continue the entire game….but this team won’t let up Cavs really have to up intensity and start getting to double digits quickly
As bad as that seemed at times… they are holding Celtics to much lower shooting percentage. Celts are just forcing more turnovers and grabbing more boards than game 1. Cavs still outscored them in the quarter and the half. LBJ hasn’t done much, Ky and Kev have been in early foul trouble and JR couldn’t hit anything until that dunk. Not worried…
The game is more to the tenacity and physicality of the Celtics. I don’t think the Cavs have necessarily played poorly.
They take care of the ball, continue to weather the storm, they will make their run and respond.
Kyrie is my hero. Big shot after big shot. Need to start calling him Pepto, because he stops opposing runs.
definitely worst half in awhile for Cavs with stagnant poor offense and getting out hustled and yet they lead by 1…stevens has got to be like wtf
Cavs have played like crap again. They need to clean this up
How come the Celtics can get Sullinger a totally wide open 3 and the Cavs can’t get a decent shot?
Wow. Love nailed on the arm, no call. Thomas loses it, foul on Cavs
bass fouled him while love was trying to post up…grabbed his waist and shoulder haha…of course no call
It’s been a bit weird…but for the most part I enjoy the lack of fouls. We can figt back plenty physically and as long as its even I like not having the game lose its flow
similar script to game 1 this is so weird haha
KYRIE!!!!
Mozgov is a mean man right now
YES! Finally an LBJ drive!
How about a freaking foul call on Bass?
Sullinger looks like he ate the starting 5 for the Buckeyes.
There you go JR!
JR almost gets another! Good to see him doing other things
Let’s go JR, we need his shot making!
Man…Stephens is good in the huddle
Scotch, I posted the Eddie Murphy wav link for you above…
That’s it! Better put this young Celtics on their place because they are getting too comfortable.
Yep. We need to be up a few possessions by half
That’s more like it! Last two possessions (outside of JR steal and dunk) were Moz and Klove back to basket post scores…
Just keep feeding the post.
this Cavs team waits till things get dicey and then they make correct adjustments
That will be harder to do against teams like Bulls, Hawks and WC teams
I love that Love got a bucket down low. We need more of that!
Wow. A. C. SCREAMING “just run the offense!”
And that’s why we don’t get more than tha first round of him haha
He’s right though. Just pass to the post if it’s open.
Smith is so crafty on defense…just saved a terrible situation
Some really lazy passes going on.
Maybe that will get JR going!
There you go JR!
Our offense is drastically underperforming. Not being aggressive and haven’t been able to shoot well.
This is frustrating to watch.
He has 3 turnovers and like 5 balls tipped out of bounds.
I agree with coach Blatt the Cavs need to pick up the pace. Can’t Lee this team hang around that long. Can’t let them continue to build their confidence.
This is the type of game where JR. smith’s Gravity would be killer if he could get his shot going
LeBron looks terrible.
He really looks tentative…
Looks like they’ve let early foul trouble affect their team game. That’s the playoffs though. Gotta keep your head in the game.
Olynyk went flying there.
Olynyk annoys me…
Me too. Someone needs to give him a shiner in his other eye.
He should get a haircut
never seen a contending team look so tentative agsint an inferior opponent…btw this game is going just like sundays….we made great comeback down 41-34 last game
Kevin’s shot fake friggin rules.
Cue the Eddie Murphy laugh…
If only this blog was wired for sound

We look out of sync. Boston really pressuring and I think it may be messing with them.
Kyrie is back… let’s see some driving
Celtics getting their hands on everything, so active and physical
Not sure how Moz didn’t get that dunk down?
Mozgov got hacked again on that lob. Unreal.
Wow. Anyone catch the Shump to tune?
Waiting for the Cavs to start executing on offense. Nothing opening up
Celtics are well coached and you can tell by watching them fight like veterans. Awesome court awareness playing the passing lanes, crowding guys and just being pesky.
That’s their game. You either have to make your outside shots or drive with authority. They make it tough to keep the ball moving…
That was an amazing no-look touch pass by LBJ… too bad Shump didn’t hit the three… or the layup after the KLove offensive board…
cavs really struggling to drive against a front court of Zeller and Olynyk which is concerning
Or not…they are just missing their open shots and getting hacked on layups without calls
Well, Kyrie is not in… but it does look like LBJ doesn’t quite know what he wants to do when he drives…
TT is saving possession after possession
Me personally I really like that the Celtics are competing hard. It is a good first round playoff experience for the young Cavs.
Did Crowder just tip that in for the Cavs?
It looked like he did.
Why did LBJ just hang out in backcourt there?
Crowder got away with a push in the back there…
A part of me feels like the Celtics just can’t keep up this energy for 48 min, Cavs gotta weather the storm
