Live Thread: Cavs @ Pistons
2015-11-17Okay… so it’s not Saturday night. Still, every time I see a trip to Detroit on the Cavs’ schedule, this song plays uncontrollably in my brain. It “pulls me through, comes on strong, and tells me what I gotta do,” so to speak. Sure it’s almost 40 years old, but I defy you to listen to this song and not “lose your mind,” or at least get pumped up for any big event… like tonight when the Cavs end their three game roady (and hopefully start a new win streak) with a showdown against the Pistons in “Detroit Rock City.”
Both teams are feeling a little raw, coming off of tough losses. The Pistons and their burgeoning star, Andre Drummond, got taken to task by their coach, the Master of Panic himself, Stan Van Gundy for their poor showing against the lowly Lakers on Sunday. The 95-87 loss was their fourth straight on a six game road trip, dropping Detroit back down to .500 on the season after a promising 5-1 start. Despite putting up astronomically historic numbers (18.5 ppg and 19.0 rpg) and his tremendous length, Andre the giant is still lacking in other areas (including just 1.4 blocks per game)Â according to SVG…
“Andre does a lot of great things but he is not protecting the rim at all,” said Van Gundy.
Stan was also critical of his PG, Reggie Jackson, after a nine point, five turnover performance against the Lakers. Jackson has still been the leading scorer for the Pistons (20.4 ppg), and put up a total of 40 points and 17 assists in two games against the Cavs last season after being traded to Detroit.
The Cavs also got an early season ripping from their royal leader for their collective poor effort and attitude in only their second defeat of the season against the Bucks on Saturday. LeBron made it pretty clear how he felt about the team despite their lofty 8-2 record…
“We’re not a great team right now,” James said. “I think we’re a good team. I think we expect we’re a great team, and we’re not. We have to get better in every facet of the game, and that’s every single facet of the game. We give a half-ass effort sometimes and expect that we can just make a run at the end. We’re not good enough to do that right now.”
Much of what ailed the Cavs were focus related mistakes, from careless passes, to failure to block out on rebounds, to a continued poor performance from the charity stripe… all things that will be achilles heels if they don’t clean them up against another long and physical team in the Pistons. LeBron expanded on his comments this morning a bit by tying them into the style of leadership he’s employing this year, and the high expectations he has for himself and his team…
“I’m the leader of this team, whatever it takes,” James said. “So if it’s laying into them, I’ll do that. Obviously, whatever this team needs, I’m going to do. I’m going to hold everyone accountable including myself. I expect nothing less than greatness out of all of us, and if we’re not able to do that, then I feel like I’ve failed.”
The Cavs will undoubtedly look to rectify their sloppiness and avoid giving yet another up-and-coming young team in the suddenly strong Central Division any sort of confidence for the future. The Pistons will be looking to defend their turf and take their best shot at the reigning EC Champs.
Probable starting lineups for the Cavs: Mo Williams, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Timofey Mozgov; and for the Pistons: Reggie Jackson, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Marcus Morris, Ersan Ilyasova and Andre Drummond.
Tip off is 7:30 pm (EST). Check out the game on Fox Sports Ohio or on WTAM 1100.
So, …GET UP! ….GET DOWN! …and GO CAVS!
Champ is getting minutes where JR and Mo has been good providing offense and shooting. Might as well give MDN and RJ more burn for better D?
What is the LBJ to Moz lob called?
My vote is “King Me!”
AGREED THERE IS SOME CONCERN WITH MOZ’S PLAY ( AT BOTH ENDS ) THIS YEAR
That should be a flagrant on Morris.
Mo with 7 assists and Delly with 5 assists in this game
JR too unselfish?
Awww Kev… if you’re gonna foul a dude… don’t let him get the bucket…
Mozzy with the jam , love it
Moz playing much better this quarter.
Oh JR… maybe Cavs should make everyone keep a pop-a-shot at home?
why da hell out of a timeout lebron with a fadeaway jumper ? so annoying. Good thing Mo made that 3 and JR with the nice steal and foul
The FT bug continues!!!
How they gonna leave Mo Gotti open in the corner?
LBJ hasn’t scored since the first half, but Cavs still able to push the lead out to 8-10…
Kentavious Caldwell Pope looks like a keeper.
Great complimentary player.
Reggie and Ilroysa causing most of the damage – i.e., love and mo defense. I can live with Drummond because he’s just that good, but those two guys should be having their way with us if there is competent defense from Love and Mo.
Little too much passing that time… hot potato….
JR NBA JAM FIRE!!!
Feed the Beast. He’s awake tonight.
JR with a crazy 3, per usual
Moz!!!
Nice to see JR back.
Continue to ride on JR. Kev stay aggressive PLEASE!!!!!!
Great defense on that last possesion but damn Mozzy need to finish these bunnies at the rim, it needs to be an and 1
Wow! Cavs closing out shooters, doubling and hustling like demons out there!
This must have been the best defensive possession of the year!
If Moz could finish most of those type plays, he’d be a monster.
That’s the defense I like to see.
Now we’re talking
YESSSSSSS JR SMISH, nice 7-0 run to start the third
JR SWISH! There you go fellas!!
Loved KLOVE’s hustle right there, we need more of that
YES!!!! Great start to the 3rd!!!
KLOVE Aggression!
Wiz are curbstomping the Bucks tonight…
@DavidZavac: FWIW, Tristan is practicing and hitting 20 footers in warmups before the 2nd half.
I know but I still don’t trust
Need to see him hit a few in games. That would be a big plus, would open the lane a lot.
I like that they show the pre-second half warmup shooting on League Pass…
The Central has played us tough this year. I’d like to see us get a couple blow out games here soon, so we can rest LeBron and others in the 4th quarter.
Orlando, Charlotte, Brooklyn all coming up soon. He can rest the whole night.
Not if we continue to coast.
The Central has quickly become one of the tougher divisions to play… also filled with very good coaches…
I wouldn’t mind to start Delly in the third, although i know that won’t happen. He can handle Reggie and the offense won’t suffer. Moz doesn’t look very good, although Drummond is a handful for sure. Thompson is doing his best but there aren’t many O boards around when Drummond is there.
My assessment is that Detroit is playing close to their best and we are not playing particularly well, outside of LeBron, and we are up 1…..
Actually, all starters are playing great offensively. They are tearing it up. Defense is the real problem, particularly with Mo and Love. They both look a step slow tonight.
Good point. Like to see that change
My assessment is that Detroit is playing close to their best and we are not playing particularly well, outside of LeBron, and we are up 1.
WE DON’T HAVE THAT KILLER INSTINCT—-PUT TEAMS AWAY / KEEP THEM DOWN / INTENSITY / MENTAL LAPSES KEEPING THE PSISTONS HANGING AROUND —-ANY WORD ON LOVE’S CONDITION ( HE WAS JUST STARTING TO HEAT UP TOO )
Bench scoring has almost disappeared except for the Loaded Wombat…
the MVP will hit some of those open threes and a few floaters, don’t worry.
Glad to see MDN in there too, he needs to hit his open shots.
Not worried, but wondering where the defense and bench scoring has gone lately…
RJ has no points which is un unusual. I really like to see Andy just a little, He can make those floaters but if Cunningham could just make a run to the basket. he should DO IT!
Looking at the stats… no defense from either team.
DET’s bench SUCKS…. that’s where CLE has the clear advantage. Going to need CLE’s bench to score to put DET away.
We should have the clear advantage with the starters – they have no one that can match up with LBJ and Love, but Mo is just getting so abused on defense its letting detroit match us point for point.
I like DET’s starting 5… but that bench is bad…. they’re relying upon Spencer Dinwiddie to create their offense, yikes!
They’ll be better when Jennings comes back and either becomes a super sixth man or gets traded for another piece…
Great point EG… totally forgot he was on their roster! That should make a big difference, although I’m not sure about his passing abilities offhand.
We only have 7 bench points, but they are playing good defense.
I’d like to see Cunningham create off the dribble some shots for the Champ and RJ on that 2nd unit offensively.
Definitely bench defense on lockdown mode.
Those were stupid plays at the end. Team forgot they had a hot JR. Never passed to him
Yeah, they really should have taken advantage of a white-hot JR… missed opportunity…
Yeah. Bad bad sequence. That kind of end of half crap has to be cleaned up. Great teams don’t have that kind of mental lapse.
That was terrible end of half. Should’ve gone 2 for 1, then letting an o-board. Just terrible.
Poor finish. LeBron complicit for taking an early shot to give the Pistons a 2-for-1.
That was true. Although we still had a 2 for 1 shot ourselves but Mo weirdly held it and then ran nowhere.
Terrible end to the half…
Damn it! Cavs not closing the quarter well.
Smart foul by love
That that hit rim? I don’t think it did.
Reggie Jackson that twerp holding Tristan.
64% for Cavs in da 2nd and 47% for Pistons in da 2nd, but Pistons at 57% for the game, not good, we need to get some defensive stops.
Mozgov exploring the metaphysical question: Is it possible to have two turnovers on one possession?
That was kind of amazing.
Amazingly horrible….
Love is down! Think he’s okay tho.
I don’t know. I do not like seeing him lying on his back.
What is it?? Inside of his knee Shit!!
That’s just ridiculous. Come on guys!
That was a really special sequence by Timo there.
Mo williams is playing particularly bad defense tonight.
Drummond has really developed well.
Great rebounder, but no offense other than putbacks.
He’s getting there. His work around the rim is better than it was.
Only Timo can match up on him but..
Kevin Love should go beast mode the moment Lebron gets a rest. Don’t give me another 10pts 12 rebounds Kev. Dominate!!!
Yeah he only has 2 pts. Lebron’s had the ball more
Cavs have had more opponents hit one legged shots in last 3 games than the last 2 years…….
Ahhhh Gotta be quicker than that Cavs!
Timo looks lost lately!
Good to see Mo get going…
Mo get going Lebron get going… Against Detroit.. 2009 all over again
Too early for that Moz..
Mozzy just 1 step slow
CAN YOU SAY ” LEBRON FPR FIFTY “—–TAKE THAT SETH CURRY
Safe to say the jumper is fixed LBJ
Glad I took the LBJ over.
Just didn’t think he’d hit them with this kind of regularity… if he was missing them, I don’t think he’d take this many…
Yea that’s why I said after hitting his first. Figured he’d start firing.
as i write, lebron with the transition 3, well well Lebron aint loosing tonight
BRON Feeling it! He has more than half the Cavs points now (21 of 41)
Jerry West well in the rearview mirror.
