Preview/Live Thread: Cavs vs. Thunder (#CaughtOffGuard)
2015-12-17Not yet, Cavs fans… not quite yet. Just in case you haven’t seen Kyrie Irving’s tweet from yesterday, refuting the early report that he’d be suiting up (in something other than other than his swank designer duds on the sideline) for tonight’s eagerly anticipated contest against the Oklahoma City Thunder, be advised that KI will be a spectator for at least one more game. His return is tantalizingly close, and not just to the fans, but also to Uncle Drew himself, who has reportedly continued to lobby the Cavs’ front office and coaches to allow him to return to active duty. Understandably, there’s a bit of a letdown on all fronts about this delay, especially as the Thunder come to town representing maybe the toughest test of this still young season for the Cavaliers. Not to mention the fact that his presence could have buoyed a suddenly paper thin Cleveland back court.
Also sitting this one out for the wine & gold is the recently returned Iman Shumpert. Shump was officially ruled out after suffering a groin injury in only his second game back from his season-long absence with a wrist injury. The new issue is reportedly a mild one, but the Cavs likely want to take no chances that it could get exacerbated. Iman is listed as day-to-day, although even if he didn’t have this latest malady to deal with, he might still not have been available to the team tonight… especially after other amazing events unfolded in his life today…
Congratulations to Iman and Teyana as they welcome baby Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr. into the world! (This is also the first female progeny I’ve ever heard of being named a Junior).
So, Kyrie and Shump are out, but hey, you might say… the Cavs have gone 14-7 without their starting back court so far, so why worry? Well… there’s more…
Mo Williams is also listed as questionable for this game with a right thumb sprain he sustained in the Celtics game. Odds are that Mo will give it a go, but given his near non-existent defense on most nights, the thumb will likely impact what he can do on the side of the court where he does most of his damage. Also, Matthew Dellavedova may be downplaying some injury issues as he was on the trainer’s table getting his back stretched after the Boston game. Delly also missed a practice while the team was in Orlando due to the sore back.
If you’re counting along at home, that’s two guards out and two more banged up, which leaves the Cavs perilously thin with only J.R. Smith and Jared Cunningham fully healthy to man the backcourt, and try and stop the dangerous Russell Westbrook. At least help is on the way…
Cavs recall Joe Harris from Canton. Charge currently in Calif. Cavs also announce G Iman Shumpert (groin) out tonight, questionable Sunday.

But seriously… Westbrook would present a daunting challenge to the Cavs’ guards even if everyone was healthy. And, since LeBron is likely to have his hands full matching up with Kevin Durant, the Cavs may need some additional minutes at guard from Richard Jefferson as well.
The Thunder (17-8) come in on a six game winning streak, where they’ve held their opponents under 100 points in every game. They are on the second night of a back-to-back, however, and have not fared well on the road against Eastern Conference teams thus far this season, going just 1-3. They are paced by Durant (third in the league in scoring at 27.3) and Westbrook (sixth at 25.6 with three triple doubles already this season) offensively, and feature big man and defensive specialist, Serge Ibaka (seven boards and 2.5 blocks per game).
This game also represents the first “homecoming” for former Cav, Dion Waiters. St. Weirdo has been his usual mercurial self for the Thunder, coming off the bench to average 10.8 ppg, while shooting 40% (36% from three point range). Dion’s been shooting it well of late, however, and had one of his better games of the season with 18 points on 6-10 shooting last night against Portland. It’s probably safe to assume he’s had tonight’s game circled on his calendar for some time now, as if the Cavs’ already thin guard rotation needed more on their plate…
The Cavs (16-7) have been on a modest three game win streak of their own, and have held their last two opponents to 76 and 77 points respectively. Cleveland’s front court will need to shine tonight to compensate for their back court deficit. It will be key for LeBron, Kevin Love, Timofey Mozgov and Tristan Thompson to come up big, and make the Thunder work hard on defense. Hopefully, Moz can continue his recent resurgence in the middle, and take advantage of Enes Kanter and Stephen Adams.
The probable starting lineups are… for the Cavaliers: C Timofey Mozgov; PF Kevin Love; SF LeBron James; SG J.R. Smith; PG Matthew Dellavedova. And for the Thunder: C Steven Adams; PF Serge Ibaka; SF Kevin Durant; SG Andre Roberson; PG Russell Westbrook.
Game time is 8 p.m. (EST) and it will be nationally televised on TNT.
This is likely to be a tough test for the Cavs, but even with their depleted guard situation, I still think the wine & gold will be able to defend their home turf against the potentially weary Thunder. Cavs win a close one 107-104…
GO CAVS!
Collison has like 4 fouls in two minutes lol
DIon MVP!
WOW!!!!!
Maybe that will get love going. The only way you can get fts
KEVIN!!!
Banana in Collison’s tailpipe…
Only down four. Very winnable. Lebron go berserk. Rest against the 6ers and go hammer down golden state.
Get some touches to KLOVE. ….LBJ,KLOVE, TT,JR and Dell to close this game and let’s see what happens.
Somebody fell asleep on the Thunder for this one…
Wtf how do we get calls. A T on blatt would not bother me a bit
Well I think it was Tristan that smacked love…but he was shoved into him. Can Lebron please get a foul call on another drive by? Okc gets the call every time they penetrate
This is a weird game — in honor of St. Weirdo’s return, I guess.
Ibaka just nearly caved KLove’s face in under the hoop… no call… smh…
Officiating has been rediculously one sided this game. I think it’s a 3 to 1 free throw advantage for them.
Love gets smacked in the face…
It’s only a foul if he gets elbowed in the face..
Nice job by Love on D…
Dion missing two wide open corner threes, the crowd is loving it!
St. Weirdo with the double triple miss…
Ninja has to take that 3.
I think the ball slipped out of his hands three times on that play
KEVIN PLAYING TOO TIMID / AFRAID TO GET HIS SHOT SWATTED –JUST GO TO THE HOOP STRONG / IF IT GETS SWATTTED NO BIG DEAL !!
NINJA reverse dunk!
22 FTs for OKC, 8 for Cavs
Very disparate officiating… 21 foul shots for OKC and only 8 for Cavs…
They really are gonna call such a ticky tack foul, honestly don’t know what else TT could have done on Ibaka
A couple of Love threes would make a world of difference right about now…
Loaded Wombat!!
TT swatting that weak stuff and flushing it on the other end after a beautiful behind the back dish from LBJ!!
Behind the back!!
I still don’t know how the Cavs can find a way to get some post touches to KLOVE.
Don’t get this game. Westbrook gets tapped and it’s a foul. LeBron’s on the floor and it’s not a foul.
Coach is going to have go loco on the refs until this chnges
Good lord can we get a call?! Bron gets raked across the face and there’s an argument?
Is it me is lebron getting fouled a lot this year and they don’t call it
Kinda like the Shaq effect, he’s so much bigger and stronger than everyone that referees feel like he can “take more”
Is this the Tommy Heinsohn refs?
Need the same clamp we used in the 2nd quarter…hard to do that with klove guarding the rim. Hope Kizzy is ready to play a lot
Time to start controlling the glass, TT with a nice put back and we need to limit them to one shot
Anyone else sick to death of star wars already?
I want to see more Glen from the Mailroom/DJ Glen Ads!
Yes. I was a kid when the original came out, and I liked the movies then, but it’s a mystery to me why people’s heads explode over anything Star Wsrs.
Hype Machine in full effect
If I had a nickel for everytime someone cries out ‘AND ONE’ in this game…….
Dion would owe you like $25…
Delly getting the ball inside…
JR’s shot has gone cold this half…
I don’t like the Thunder. Something about this team bothers me. Can’t put my finger on it…
I don’t dislike them nearly as much as the Warriors, Clippers or Rockets…
For me it’s Clay Bennett..
FINALLY we get a call
There you go Moz!
Love’s got to close out on Ibaka there… not like he’s gonna put it on the floor…
Bad hands Mozzy is back…
Can’t turn the ball over against the Thunder… or that happens…
Linsanity returns… Jeremy Lin has a 33 point game going…
Tor starting backcourt has 50 shots, and Char starting backcourt has 44. Wow.
Yeah… Lowry has missed 20 shots…
Rest of the roster has 40 shots for Toronto and 38 shots for Hornets.
Phoenix and Portland are exactly the same too. Looks like that’s what the game is changing to.
The Star Wars/TNT mashup shots were hilarious… Shaq as Chewie is priceless…
Don’t get people ragging on Blatt on Twitter. Guy had the guts to sit Klove cause he didn’t want to botch a 16-0 run.
Everyone’s a critic…
Nobody on TNT can say Delly’s name right… smh…
Love seeing JR put up more shots…. Need to get Love going.
Delly leads Cavs in +/-, big surprise.
Game of runs so far…
You know Lebron isn’t one of the best closers of the first half.. I’ve never seen him manage the clock wisely to close the last few seconds of the first half this season..
I disagree. He’s always on top of 2 for 1’s and the like. He’s not always running a great play or making the shots, but he’s usually on top of the clock.
He is, but often times he melts the clock nicely sets up the shooters and boom ends up as a long two missed jumper.. That’s just my observation lately
Like eight straight possessions with a foul at the end of it and no call. Are we in Oklahoma?!
Not sure why they didn’t play Love. Que the National Media!
Because they can’t get him the ball inside and he’s not helping thwart OKC dribble penetration… And because they were on a run…
Moz seems to volleyball the ball to the other team more often than his own team…
Yea lately I’d agree with this.
Yeah, more lately… last year it seemed way more effective… maybe teams have figured this out…
TT getting out TT-ed…
I agree, it’s weird seeing him lose some hustle balls
He needs to learn to backtap the balls he can’t secure, ala Ben Wallace. Mozzy started to do this quite a lot towards end of last year to good results.
Blatt should be getting a tech right now. We are getting mauled
TT was fouled on the fast break… LBJ mauled on by Ibaka on the pump fake. Then TT goes striaght up, and gets called for blocking. Terrible officaiting sequence there.
Delly is the catalyst tonight.
Delly’s defense has been soooo sneaky good on Westbrook. Makin him a jump shooter is Hard to do.
And he’s making him play defense.
And getting him in foul trouble…
Knocking down open threes, no hesitation on the shot
Jr taking over this game
Saw that Ibaka block as soon as TT got the ball…
JR really playing well on both ends
Isn’t Tristan left handed? Cripes.
I’m liking this lineup so far, surprisingly effective
LOVE NEEDS TO AQUIRE SOME OF DELLY’S TOUGHNESS –NOT AFRAID OF ANYONE OR ANY MOMENT — KEEP IT GOING CAVS !!
Cavs run fueled by not settling for outside shots, and by taking the ball to the hole. Even the 3’s by Delly were wide open due to LBJ’s driving.
All starts at the defensive end, really tightened the screws up!
JR Ballin tonight!
I wonder if Shump made him the Godfather or something…
Mozzy with the roll… Delly with the great pass!
A no look no less!!!
Delly’s torrid pace is freeing up JR to make plays. I’m digging it.
Love JR’s runners lately!
12-0 run for the tie
YOU BEAT NE TO IT —STILL WORTH REPEATING –THE DELLY TREY !!!
Cavs with a 10-0 run of their own… and counting!
Delly trey!
