Live Thread: Cavs @ Warriors
2015-12-25It’s Christmas, and Adam Silver has been a very giving man this year. NBA fans are finally getting the rematch they all wished for: Cavs Vs. Warriors. Although, neither team looks exactly the same since they last met on June 16th.
The Warriors are missing their small ball power forward, Harrison Barnes, and the Cavs are fully loaded for the first time in nearly six months.
The game today could be a preview of the Finals, as both teams sit atop their respective conferences. The Warriors have been insanely hot so far this season losing just one game, and winning by an average of 13.5 points (second in the league). The Cavs are are beating opponents by an average of 6.2 points (fourth in the league).
Here’s what I’m looking for today:
1. How will the Cavs cover Stephen Curry? Curry is averaging 31.2 points a night, hitting 4.8 threes a night! In game one of the Finals, Irving covered Curry and held him to 26 points on 10-20 shooting. Curry has scored less than 26 points just eight times this season. Is Irving up for the challenge today?
Once Irving went out with his knee injury in the Finals, the Cavs began trapping Curry pick and rolls, forcing a pass, and then rushing to whoever caught the ball to force one final pass. Whoever received that second pass was free to shoot it. Typically, Andre Iguodala was that guy. He started hitting his shots in games four, five, and six, which propelled the Warriors to a title.
2. What lineup will finish this game? Kyrie Irving is on a minutes restriction, but even if he wasn’t, it’s still questionable as to if he would finish the game out. The Cavs’ Warrior stomping lineup in the Finals was Dellavedova, Shumpert, James, Mozgov, and Thomspon. LeBron ran the offense and the other guys focused on defending and getting every single rebound possible. It flustered the Warriors small ball super group.
3. With Kevin Love back, the Warriors will actually have to defend the entire floor. When the Cavs played them in the Finals, TT and Mozgov were often on the floor together for long stretches of time. Shumpert and Delly couldn’t hit any of their 3s. This resulted in the King seeing at least three defenders in the paint at all times. He had to work his butt off. What’s gonna happen when he gets to face just two defenders in the paint?
4. Both of these teams can defend and play offense. What is each one going to focus on? Is this game going to be a grind it out defensive affair or will both groups just try to out score each other? For the sake of the Cavs, I really hope they turn this game into a rough defensive event. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are too dangerous from beyond the arc to try and out score.
5. TT or Mozgov are going to get guarded by Draymond Green at some point during this game. Can those two assert themselves as Bigs who can punish a smaller guy on the glass?
I’m predicting this game is won by less than three point by the Cavs. The Cavs (the King) have been waiting for this game all year. They’re going to play hard, and I’m sure it’s on their minds that they can deliver the Warriors their second L of the season.
Merry Christmas, let’s hope for a big Cavs win.
Please email Nate Smith, see the sidebar for his email address, if you would like a Cavs:The Blog shirt. He has two medium and two large shirts left for the first four people who contact him.
I leave you with the best holiday special of all time:
Kyrie needs to hit those wide open 3’s his getting. If he hits those the court will be wide open for the Cavs.
Forgivable though in his third game back…
I agree……………..
Yeah, I am not going to complain about anything Kyrie for his first three weeks. Just stay healthy and get into shape.
This Oakland crowd is pathetic.
Well, Oakland is a pretty pathetic town generally…
They’re like any other. Homers. Its what they’re supposed to be.
I hope Curry comes back… no win situation for Cavs… if they lose without him, then that’s their excuse… if they win, then Cavs can’t beat them even without him…
He was jogging back from the locker room… looks like he’s coming back.
Who cares? A win is a win.
I hate him but I don’t want him hurt.
Agree but the Warriors will always get the benefit of any doubt. I like their overall game but they all mug way too much. LeBron’s court side dancing is minor compared to their “swagger”
NICE LOOK!!!! OFF THE KLOVE POST ACTION GOT TT EASY LAYUP!!!
I agree with Jackson… I saw them looking at Curry’s foot.. on the side.
Omg no foul there. Plus Draymond walked.
Looked like pretty good D by TT that time on Green.
Ball don’t lie Donkey…
Ugh green getting bailed out on foul. Come on defense
Any cavs the blog commenters live in the Bay Area ?
LBJ WITH ANOTHER POSTUP!!!!
Finally a three goes in and it doesn’t count. Uhg.
Might get him going though…
Man… nobody hitting from outside for Cavs…
But we are right there! Come on cavs finish half strong
That’s Kyrie’s shot…. just tentative right now.
He doesn’t have his legs yet. Kyrie is in training camp right now. Doesn’t count until Jan 15.
CAVS CLIMBING BACK!!!! GSW not taking advantage!
Nice steal by Kyrie!
Ugh. Just playing Warriors pace with that turnover.
Could it be Curry’s ankle?
He was having calf issues coming into the game… bet he aggravated it…
OOO Didn’t know there was a prior issue.
Love with his Derek Anderson impression, and not the 2007 version.
Umm…. a little too far Kev…
He seems to still be a little too excited.
Its almost like Golden State is not as good if their best players aren’t fully healthy. Huih.
Imagine that! Come on cavs
Yeah I was abused on Twitter last season when I said he could not carry a load without help. Let’s see Twitter react now
Nice… LBJ going to the hoop!!! AND 1!!!!
Finally a and 1. What is up w curry
Curry goes to locker room…
If Curry is injured, wow. They better hope its not serious.
Didn’t look serious…
As for the league I hope he is ok. But I can’t deny he is mugging too much for me
Going right back to Love in the post.
Cavs playing better with James on bench. Interesting.
I don’t hate this game so far. Being in Oakland is hard. They’re hanging in. They’ll need to withstand a few more big runs by Golden State. But so far, not bad.
I actually like Iggy. Can’t get mad at that dude.
I like him too… I actually preferred that he won MVP over Chef and Donkey…
I can hear that and glad he won the mvp vs curry.
See now they are settling down and running their stuff better. The Cavs need to post KLove against this Warriors line up.
Love is playing good just missing a few shots. Positive cav vibes all around!
Love inside is exactly what they need!
Yes Yes Yes. Especially if Sp[eights is in.
Yeah I hope Kevin works the post every trip on offense
GREAT LOOK BY MO! KLOVE FOR THE EASY TWO!
My son just said cavs were robbed there. Was there contact on the festivus block ?
Nice bank by Delly!
MVP MVP MVP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ughuadala
Iggy picking up where he left off in the Finals… smh…
Uh, yeah, let’s not leave the Finals MVP wide open.
Hate that call but the dubs do it all the time.
Cavs took 11 three pointers compared to the Warrior’s 6… only made two of them… inverse of what they should be doing…
absolutely. Speights is in, that’s a mismatch Lvoe.
Banana in the tailpipe! well done mo
NICE offense… Mo with the banana!!!
Blatt coaching like this is just another regular season game. Cannot play Jones and Mo when you don’t need to. Dubs will smoke them.
It is just another regular season game. Blatt and crew doing the long play. Eyes on the prize.
The Jones move didn’t hurt him tho…
Cavs need to rely….. Easy for me to say.
Cavs are getting good shots but are not shooting with confidence. . If they settle down and hit some of those we could have a good one but if not this game could get ugly soon.
Cavs just not hitting good looks. Also what’s with the Mo, Delly, TT, JJ and Shump lineup. Cav have 3 stars. Leave one in.
Cavs missing wide open shots. Picked a bad game for no one to hit a three.
Okay, defense was good for 8 minutes.
LBJ is out of synch.
Blatt missing a few match ups – probably sticking to his game plan instead of changing as it goes. I don’t mind if he’s just experimenting.
The Shump pass to TT…
LeBron doesn’t seem to be playing like himself, and Irving just seems to be a shell of himself. Love and Shump are both ice cold today as well. Could be a long game if they don’t wake up.
Irving is still working into game shape and will probably be a net minus for another couple weeks. Its okay. LBJ is campaigning for better foul calls for the rest of the year. Shump isn’t there for his offense.
My problem is Love right now. He’s got to be better on offense, especially when getting the mismatches he is. He has a couple of inches on Green, he needs to use them.
Yeah, the “Cavs are healthy” talk is way premature.
Le iso needs to be eliminated from last second shots.
I’ve been syaing that since 2002
I guess we will say it until 2020
Cavs missing a lot of shots early… need someone to get hot…
Definitely… they’re getting open looks that they normally make. Post ups by KLOVE and LBJ were working well the 1st half of the 1st quarter.
LBJ really seems out of synch…
Psyched out and his team mates are just watching him
Great pass! Needed that bucket.
Yeah… even if Mo plays good D on Livingston… Shawn is just too tall…
Oh no. Williams is in
I don’t understand Delly taking heat check threes. He is a catch and shoot guy, off the dribble ai’nt his game.
He’s Been hitting when teams have been going under screens. He’s earned the right to take that shot.
Don’t you have to make at least one or two for it to be a heat check?
Nice defense by Delly… Nice pass by Shump!
Nice feed to tt finish strong
James Jones against Draymond seems like a mismatch… although that worked out well…
Jones? Hate this move.
Have to foul harder. send that punk back to Saginaw.
Agree 1000%……
Cavs need to take a breath, lock in, go back to what works for them. Love needs to get good position inside and they need to keep tight D. If you’re going to foul, foul Hard.
Cavs can’t use hands or hips on d I guess
I don’t think I’ve ever wished death on anyone… but Draymond Green might be the first…
No ball movement. Long game is coming if that doesn’t change
Bad play by Delly. God, this crowd sucks.
Helping off Curry? Yeah, not a winning tactic.
NICE DRIVE LBJ!!! KEEP GOING TO THE HOOP!
You’re not going to win a heat check three lebron, against Curry.
LBJ doesn’t seem locked in yet…
Don’t let this game get out of hand now, come on. Smart offense leads to good defense. Sloppy offense leads to bad defense.
They’ve been struggling on offense so far this quarter…. many good looks, can’t convert them because they’re slightly out of rhythm.
