Live Thread: Cavs @ Suns (#TimeToGoSupernova)
2015-12-28After three straight games of ice cold shooting (the last of which was also accompanied by a total defensive collapse), the Cavs should be due for an explosion of epic proportions. Especially against the imploding celestial body that is the Phoenix Suns these days. The Cavs’ shooting stars have been anything but lately, as gravity and isolation have dragged their overall shooting percentage down to just 35% (90-255) since they last lit up the sky against the Sixers. The long range bombs have been an even less successful 25% (21-83) in that time. Fortunately, they face off against a Suns team that has spiraled out of orbit this season, and is on the verge of a complete meltdown.
The Suns are now down two starters, with Eric Bledsoe (who had been having a stellar year) suffering a knee injury that reportedly will keep him out until after the All-Star break, and the ongoing misadventures of Markieff Morris who is serving a two game suspension for literally throwing in the towel… right at his coach’s head.
While the Cavs have lost two straight, and are coming off of an embarrassing loss to the Trailblazers, the Suns can one-up them on that front having lost four straight, including Saturday’s debacle at home where they handed the lowly 76ers (who were without Jahlil Okafor) their first road win of the year. And, as if getting a face-full of sweaty terrycloth wasn’t humiliation enough… Coach Jeff Hornacek’s seat has been hotter than the surface of the sun lately, with Phoenix management firing two of his assistant coaches against his wishes. It may only be a matter of time before Hornacek himself burns up or out.
The Cavs don’t have nearly the issues the Suns have, but their lackluster performance on Saturday has certainly given rise to a nebula of questions and concerns. Mostly, they could use a return to a larger rotation, and a return to sharing the ball the way they had been doing earlier in the season. Everyone is healthy and available on the Cavs’ side of things, as Kyrie Irving will return from a scheduled day of rest. Hopefully, with a day off to dwell on the mysteries of their basketball universe, they can return with enough fire power to inflict a massive and catastrophic destruction on the unstable Suns. If not, things might get a whole lot hotter for Coach David Blatt, LeBron and the rest of the team.
Projected starting lineup for the Cavs: C Timofey Mozgov; PF Kevin Love; SF LeBron James; SG J.R. Smith; PG Kyrie Irving. And for the Suns: C Alex Len; PF Jon Leuer; SF P.J. Tucker; SG Devin Booker; PG Brandon Knight.
Gametime is 9 p.m. (EST)/6 p.m. for those of you on the West Coast, and all the action can be seen on Fox Sports Ohio… or heard on WTAM 1100.
Since I’m already on a positive kick… I’ll predict the Cavs to go supernova tonight and light up the NBA galaxy… while leaving the Suns to get sucked into the resulting supermassive black hole. Prediction: Cavs 112, Suns 84.
Why is Brandon Knight get these ridiculous calls.?
Bron fought hard for that board… then got a bogus call on the other end…
JR with his patented step back jumpers,
JR going nuclear…
JR is on fire!!!!!!!!
Total flop by Knight there.
Why the hell are the refs all of a sudden involved? Lebron tripped him but knight pushed off like crazy
Bron burning through his fouls this quarter… though it looked like Knight pushed Delly…
Knight got away with pushing Delly.
LeBron is taking SOOO many gambles on D.
He’s sick of playing slow. Wants the open floor where he has a shot at getting a foul call
Like to see Kyrie take more shots. He is resting tomorrow. Why not?
I’m so sick of not happy Lebron. His lack of joy makes watching him play almost annoying
Do you see him frowning?
We can’t get any separation.
its like we only shooting 3’s in this quarter, not crazy bout that
Kyrie can’t keep up with Knight just yet…
Bet Knight loves that!!
We may have to score 125 to win
Then a bad decision to jack up a three on the Love second chance…
Cavs looking lazy
On defense you mean? They are all over the boards this half…
That pass by Lebron was something special. Had to bring Len away from TT and there aren’t many who would have known to do that
Great pass by LeBron to TT.
Smart dish by LBJ to TT for the And 1…
Suns such proficient shooters
Lebron playing catch and shoot well from the top of the key. Fun to see
Long two for Bron… but it still went in…
Good ball movement by the Cavs for da 2nd chance 3 pointer
Kevin LOVE!!
I don’t have any concrete stats but it sure seemed like the bench mob as well as they played got demolished on the boards.
Wow Brooklyn won at Miami. Only in the East, smh.
Nets not as bad as their record….
I’m really not surprised. They will continue to improve. They have had so many close games. Just a matter of time they finally start getting wins.
Only reason Suns are even in the game is the 12 second chance points they have…
On the other hand we HAVE hit 11 3’s.
They were due…
A totally preventable 12 points.
I’m not even down on the Cavs…I think they will tear up the second half of the season. I don’t know why I keep pointing out how poorly we are playin on defense.
Basically, everyone besides TT and Mozgov who came into the game have atleast 1 3 pointer, great stat
We’re gonna have to win on pure effort for the time being. Nobody knows what defensive scheme we are playing. Guys look lost. Blatt game planned the heck out of that Christmas Day game to perfection. It appears no scouting has been done on the rest of our western opponents on this road trip.
I predict they will clamp down on the Suns in the third…
I can vouch for EG predictions…….
I hope you’re right but it takes 5 guys who can play defense. Do we have that lineup right now?
On another note, Golden state’s seeming ease in destroying the league is really starting to leak into our feelings about the Cavs thus far I think. Hoping that is the reason for most of the salty expressions
Did you watch the defense in the Golden State game? They have the guys to do it…
Defense is effort and talent/ability, and we lack in the latter so we have to bring it with effort nightly and therein lies the problem.
I’d just prefer it not be a hockey line change. But maybe I’m just picking nits….
He’s definitely got to figure out the optimal lineup configurations… but it’s still December…
Good to see Blatt expand his rotation too…
No Mo tho. I think 10 men the most you can go.
Mo would get the JFJ minutes probably…
I don’t know. I think Mo is in trouble unless a guard is injured. Or when KI sits tomorrow.
Still think he’d get the 4 minutes of run over JFJ if he was available tonight…
With the O clicking tonight Coach Blatt shouldn’t be afraid to trot out the Delly, Shump, LBJ, Love, TT lineup.
Lebron seriously lacks leadership skills.
Come on man… dude has still led his team to the Finals for five straight years… He may not always be the perfect leader, but he’s definitely a leader…
He has his flaws but leadership is not one of them. His teammates would have his back and follow him anywhere.
5 players with 8+ points, love the distribution
LeBron finds a new way to burn the clock at the end of the half: pass to Love with no time left.
He ALWAYS wants the last shot rather it’s a good look or not
He got hung out there. At least he tried something other than a 20 footer at the buzzer.
Not really sure what Bron was doing on that last play… Still, will take 60… bring on the supernova!
Gross. Haha I can’t believe how good we have made this horrid team look so far
Love the KLove jump hook…
Love should have swung it to Delly there. Missed opportunity.
SMH how good Delly is now
Why couldn’t Leuer do that when he was a Cav?
Delly is so clutch. How does kevin love not hit him wide open at the top of they key there
Haha. They called a 3 second violation in the Cavs. Maybe they should look at the Suns on the defensive side?
Def 3 seconds doesn’t get called on anyone in NBA.
13-1 run, lets keep it going , das how we need to move the ball
Delly called for the ball from LeBron on that 3. Or at least a wave to let LeBron know he was open.
DELLY TREY!!!
everybody hitting shots tonight, love it
Nice hustle by KLOVE by da way
Nice drive by Kyrie! Little by little getting back to his old self.
We are shooting 61% and already have 10 3 pointers made, wow
That save by kev to JR just now was insane!! Great effort. Wish we could buy a foul call
Somebody practically pulled JR to the floor…
JR did well to not be out of bounds when the ball came back to him. He must have been levitating or something.
BUT GETTING KILLED ON THE BOARDS 22-12 ——JUST CAN’T SEEM TO PUT A COMPLETE GAME TOGETHER —NOT WHINING —JUST AN OBSERVATION
LeBron not boarding. Everyone has to rebound right now.
Some of it’s bad bounces… but a lot of it is the front line guys not boxing out…
Think the Suns getting some long rebounds and some bounces go their way. Effort is there.
YAYYY, Kyrieee, so happy to see hm make a shot
UNCLE DREW!!
Kevin Love contested a shot at the rim.
Finally a good hard foul from someone not named JR Smith.
after seeing the Cavs miss soo much shots in da pass 3 games, it feels good to see any shot go in
JRidiculous…
Nice dribbling by Irving and dish to TT, he almost missed him underneath
Kyrie delivers!
Beautiful shot from JR!!
JR Swish! On the pirouette in the corner. Very high degree of difficulty.
Ridiculous JR!!!!
DAMNNNN JR, WOWWW
HOLY COW! JR is going SUPERNOVA!
LeBron is one of the defensive problems right now. Way too eager to roam off his Man and not boxing out or crashing the D Boards.
On pace to allow 64 points. It seems the Cavs have issues with quick pace teams.
Man… there is some saltiness in here tonight… c’mon guys… it’s gonna be okay
