Live Thread: Cavs vs. Suns (#CloudyWithAChanceOfTempo)
2016-01-27[Editor’s Note: It was a busy content day here at C:tB, and even though there’s a game tonight, make sure you check out both Robert’s Point Four-ward and David’s Wood Shop article… they are excellent!]
If someone had bet me that Phoenix Suns Head Coach, Jeff Hornacek, would have outlasted David Blatt as an employed NBA coach this season… I would have lost a lot of money. Despite his seat being hotter than the surface of the actual sun, with a disappointing team featuring players in open revolt and a torrential downpour of injuries, Hornacek still wears a suit and holds a clipboard while Blatt now gets paid to not show up for work. Or maybe he’s just sitting on a beach with Hans, earning 20 percent. In any event, it’s not my intention to rain on the Cavs’ Ty Lue parade (or sprint drills as the case may be), but only to point out how suddenly the storms of discontent can roll in and cast an unexpected shadow on an organization.
The good news is that the Suns are still sinking in the West, and a Cavs victory should be a little easier to predict given the disarray and tired legs of their opponent (Phoenix lost the front end of a back-to-back last night against the equally miserable Sixers). They have fallen to 14-32, and have lost their last 11 road games in a row. The injury bug has fairly decimated their back court, with Eric Bledsoe out for the season and Brandon Knight ailing, although backup, Archie Goodwin, has had three straight 20+ point games in their stead. Phoenix also features two buzzed about potential trade targets for the Cavs in towel-throwing problem child, Markieff Morris, and misused big man, Tyson Chandler.
Despite the recent cloud cover for the Cavs, there was a bit of blue sky that peeked through in Monday’s win against the T-Wolves, as the team secured the first victory of the Ty Lue era. They seemed a little less winded from the up-tempo style that Lue is incorporating, and their shooting cold front thawed out a bit. Since the Suns like to run the ball a lot themselves (they average 100.7 possessions per 48 minutes, good for fourth in the league), the Cavs should get lots of practice getting up and down the court. The real question is whether they can weather the Suns attack and make some defensive adjustments and improvements, although they might have a little help from former Sun, Mike Longabardi, who was officially hired as the Cavs’ Defensive Coordinator today.
The Cavs beat the Suns when they squared off in Phoenix, eclipsing them 101-97 with a scorching fourth quarter performance from Kyrie Irving (including a dagger three with 22 seconds left). That game also marked the debut of Tristan Thompson in the starting lineup, a move that will be replicated for tonight’s contest.
Probable starting lineup for the Cavs is: Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson. And, for the Suns: Archie Goodwin, Devin Booker, P.J. Tucker, Alex Len and Tyson Chandler.
The game starts at 7pm (EST) and can be seen on FSO, or heard on WTAM 1100.
Forecast: Cavs brighten their outlook without letting the Suns shine, and win 117-105.
Also… keep an eye on LeBron James, as he could be just the 17th player in NBA history to reach the 26K plateau if he can rain down 36 points tonight.
Put in Jones! Put in Jones!
Appreciating the way the bench has kept up the intensity and scoring in the fourth… growing the lead!
Love’s line- 21 pts 11 rb 4 ast 2 stl 2 blk. That’s the KLove we thought we were getting.
I think they can get more of that Love…it’s not always a Love thing, it’s a team thing. They can certainly put him in a better position to succeed.
Last time he played that well was NY in December
We had this Love all through the first part of the season, before Kyrie got back.
My new motto for Kyrie:
Love him, but gotta shove him
Love was awesome tonight, and he was getting banged a lot by their bigs
Would love to see Mo run some plays…
Me too. In Canton /
(said every coach on the Cavs this year)
It’s safe to say, the Cavs look good running this style of game
Against a tired Suns team… but yes, will take any positive we can after the last couple weeks…
Anyone listen to Lowe podcast where it was revealed Blatt analyzed team in offseason and decided he wanted them to play faster this season. Guess it doesn’t matter tho if he wasn’ t being listened to.
RJ’s plus 18 from deep off the bench is inspiring. MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
KLove with hands consistently up on D, it’s a good look for him!
Kevin Love looks like a different player tonight…
His spirit is connected
And galvanized…
He’s looked galvanized…in fairness, a lot of guys look galvanized against the Suns…
Cuz he’s been allowed to play like he used to
You mean where he is the only viable offensive option on the floor? (Minny)
Or at least a No.2
But yes lol
Really like this line up of Love with the bench players. Hope to see more of this.
Good developments thus far. Got to continue to keep working.
Maybe that’s what Coach Lue was talking about?
Didn’t he say explicitly that he wanted to run KLove with the second unit?
That’s what I meant… less of a demotion for Love, more of a maximizing of his talents…
Yes he did. He stated that clearly. Good to see.
Wonder if Mo is happy with zero minutes…
Pretty safe point in the game to give him some minutes.
Double double Kevin Love is my favorite Kevin Love
The 30 assists is great… but the 11 steals are just as good!
I like the assists better. The Suns just threw the ball away about 8 times in the 3rd.
Cavs also turned the defensive intensity up and got their hands into passing lanes…
True, just thought it was more Suns being bad than Cavs being good; The passing on the other hand was all Cavs.
Both have something to do with tired Sun legs on the second night of a back to back… but like I said, I enjoy them both equally… Besides, steals lead to your favorite baskets… runouts off of turnovers… ;)
Pretty sure Lebron can sit the rest of the game. Might as well give the other guys some run.
GREAT PASS by Shump!
Good bear… Good bear…
KLove getting in there!
Whelp. Off to watch Jessica Jones. Hope they end up winning!
Your love of mediocrity knows no bounds.
RJ shoulda shot that… tough play for KLove with clock running down…
Totally down with this new look Cavs team.
Delly always comes up small after one of his epic games (scoring that is)
Delly trey! Good way to start the fourth…
About time Delly
So we are about to have back to back 30 and more assist games. Never did that under Blatt. I’m
I think he just passed out.
Or victim of a slasher…
James with 21 and 9 and 3 so far.
Josh Smith. Yeah or nay?
You forgot the /s
He is already in Houston. This would never happen if Daryl Morey was still alive.
Are you kidding? He’s the “glue guy”! Rockets are unbeaten since he returned (until tonight probably…)
Yay for Rockets… Nay for Clips…
If the question is “Should the Dubs trade Green for Josh Smith”, my answer is ‘yeah’.
Yeah. Easily. LeBron will keep him in line.
Naaaaaaaaay! …… Nay.
So we clearly do not miss Blatt
I have no idea, but apparently you can tell a lot from beating two of the worst teams in the league…
I totally AGREE
Worst team in the league on the second night of a back to back. Troll harder.
Friday and Saturday will be the true test… SVG and Pop are just a bit better than Sam Mitchell and Jeff Hornacek…
Still way to early to judge. There just hasn’t been enough time to institute new schemes and sets and internalize them through repetition. I wouldn’t call any regular season game a true test.
Where did he touch him?
TT has gotten so much better at finishing around the rim.
Wow. These refs.
Wow, what a cheapo call on Delly…
RJ making an impact tonight…
Get the lead to 19 or 20, and sit the starters most of the 4th…
LBJ with no fade on the J…
Why does LBJ have 3x the assists of our starting PG???
All year I just assumed it was Love that was the problem. But it’s more and more appearing to be KI!
We can’t have a team of isolation based players.
Hasn’t that always been the case?
Yes and I was just too blinded to see it
How’s that a foul on Delly?
SHUMP-TASTIC!
LOL… Chandler…
Wtf, Kyrie. At least you were. Yanked and Delly replaced you.
JR SWISH!
TT is in Glass Monster Mode…
GREAT D by Kyrie that time!
SHAZAM!
Remember the days when Irving could make a shot?
Kyrie just doesn’t look good, for whatever reason. Two straight turnovers, one on a 3 on 1 fast break.
KI bad sequence of plays. Stop the frisking dribbling so much
More of a case to trade him.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Kyrie, but I also want to win a championship, and this team won’t be able to do that against GSW or SAS
This is an extremely reactionary viewpoint…
I admit that it is, but the more I think about it, the more it makes total sense.
Lue offense >> Blatt offense.
Are you on Griffin’s payroll? If not, you should be.
I think it’s pretty obvious he’s a paid Griffin astroturfer. It’s the only thing that makes sense.
Cols 7:14 is my least favorite Bible verse.
“And, on the Seventh Day, nay, He did not rest, but He hath removed his rib and Yay, He gave form to His Son, Lebron.”
Finally taking care of business like they should.
Cavs came to PLAY in the second half! Great to see!
KLOVE! Amazing how made baskets can make any offense look good…
What a start to the 2nd half by JR SWISH!! Wow defense and offense.
Meadowlark lemon to curly Neal! And the generals are down 17!
This is pleasant to watch.
LOL did anyone else see that little rich bastard on court side going crazy?
Just because they payed a surrogate to birth him doesn’t make him a bastard.
Good offensive movement for Cavs to start the fourth… and also some good steals on D…
Anyone else thinking a lot about the Kyrie/CP3 trade “what ifs” going viral?
That would be wonderful for the Cavs.
Kyrie is 23… CP3 is the other side of 30… might be good for a year or two, but not long term…
Cavs traded Wiggins for Love, that’s not “Long Term” thinking.
CP3 has about as many Years as LBJ left, they can finish their careers together and then we rebuild.
Pass… I live in LA and watch CP3 play all the time… you’re being influenced by the recent struggles of KI…
I understand the rumors, but if anyone gets traded from the Clips, it’s probably Blake, stupid as that is. Don’t think Glenn would trade away Paul.
Well “what if” the Clips knew Paul will bolt after this year? Wouldn’t it be better to get something then to let him walk. Maybe Kyrie doesn’t get the Clips past GSW and/or SAS, but in a couple years with Blake, Kyrie and Jordan under Doc Rivers and that team becomes a force to be reckoned with. Meanwhile in The Land, we get the distributor we need so LBJ doesn’t have to bear that burden and can refocus his game to what makes him great. Love can go back to being who he is offensively. We go to CP3’s first… Read more »
Man this Detroit/Philly game is like a high school score… might finish in the 60s…
I hope the NBA powers that be do something to bring back the midrange game. Just a much more exciting game before we decided all midrange shots suck.
Maybe get rid of the three pointer? Or move it back two feet?
Moving it back wouldn’t do much to Steph…
But it would make for a much more watchable game.
Don’t disagree. Who knows… maybe it’s cyclical?
Maybe we can bring back polio and black and white tv too…
Comment of the year.
Easy fix: make all shots inside the 3 point line worth 4 points. Problem solved.
Really liking the Lue era.
Except for the defense…
And except for LeBron’s increased minutes
You are playing probably the worst team in the league (if not, certainly one of the worst two) at home and you play LBJ 19 minutes in the first half. This doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever. New coach or not, the Cavs are going to win the East as long as LeBron is healthy. And besides, you are going to beat the Suns anyway. He is playing too many minutes!!
I was thinking the same thing. WTF
Goodnight Gents. My League pass sucks. I’m going to listen to the game on the radio in the car and then bathe my young children.
Night JoeyB! Drive safe!
Thank you for clarifying that these are not your adult children who need to be bathed.
Nice jam from Shump tho…
Shump thump!!!!!!
Careful with the wrist Shump! Everytime he dunks I just wish he’d drop it in the hoop two handed Kevin Love style.
Cavs offensive numbers are pretty good, albeit vs the terrible Suns who played last night. 17 assists to go with 55% shooting.
You forgot the terrible Suns who played last night “and got trucked by the equally horrible Sixers”
Hopefully the Suns were just playing with everything they had and will be out of gas in the third quarter. Because we really should win this game by 15 plus under any circumstances.
That’s sort of the elbow, right? Elbow-adjacent?
That’s my neighborhood – north of Koreatown, West of Downtown, South of Los Feliz…
WOW, stat of the night so far, 17 AST on 21 FG. wow
Delly just strolling the ball up the court with 11 seconds left in the half….
We really should have gotten a better shot there before the half.
The Delly ISO is killing us… /s
Stepback three ain’t your shot, Matt.
Yeah. As much as I love the guy, he’s a catch and shooter.
He thinks it’s still Australia day. Does I took like Australia day to you?
Everyday is Australia Day. #Fear the Wombat
I strongly dislike this officiating crew…
Except for Lauren. I always dig her.
Even she has been uncharacteristically quick with the whistle tonight…
She can be quick with my whistle any day (heart emojii that I don’t know how to do).
Even Nate can’t figure out emojiis…
I still have a flip phone. No joke.
Love RIPPING that ball away from Chandler…
Love having a really good game, and seems to be playing his ass off…
I’ve never seen Love not play his ass off. He may be misused, he may be no fun with the guys, but I’ve never seen him loaf. He works hard.
Yeah, I agree, he seems disengaged at times, but I blame that more on his teammates.
I agree. He’s getting angry. The rest of the team needs to get angry and stay that way.
