Live Thread: Cavs @ Kings (#TuneUp)
2017-01-13Life on the road isn’t always a smooth ride. Sometimes you need to take a pit stop for a quick tune up… especially after a fairly brutal back-to-back trip through some inclement weather. Even though they picked up a brand new part heading into this long journey into the west, the Cavs are still trying to find the time to integrate him properly. A general lack of test driving in practice has been dogging the team, dating back to when they were missing several key players due to injury and illness before embarking on this current six game tour. They did finally get a day yesterday to run some diagnostics, change the oil and rotate their proverbial tires before tonight’s stop in Sacramento to take on the Kings.
Ty Lue has decided to make some adjustments on the fly, installing Iman Shumpert in the starting rotation, replacing DeAndre Liggins who’s been the starter since J.R. Smith went down on December 21st. When asked about the shift when addressing the media today, Coach had this to say…
“I just wanted to do it.”
Though I’m not sure I completely agree with the rationale… or the move, Lue followed up by saying that he thinks Shump has maybe been trying to do too much with the second unit when he comes in, and might be more comfortable with the starters. You never know, it might also be an opportunity to showcase Shump if he’s part of David Griffin’s plan to bring in another playmaker soon. Lue also indicated that he was looking for ways to get Kyle Korver more time with the Big Three on the floor, and that he flirted with the idea of starting the newest addition as well… so, we’ll see how that plays out in the new Golden1 Arena.
While this game should provide the Cavs with one last opportunity for a well needed tune up before they pull into the Bay Area for their drag race with the Warriors, the one guy who might throw a monkey wrench into their plans could be DeMarcus Cousins. Boogie has been the engine that has propelled the Kings into the race for the eighth playoff seed in the Western Conference. The big man is averaging 28 points and over 10 rebounds per game this season, which will likely earn him a spot on this year’s All Star team. He’s also had help from Rudy Gay, Darren Collison and a resurgent Ty Lawson off the bench. Probably the biggest difference for this model of the Kings though has been the steady leadership of new head coach Dave Joerger.
Probable starting lineup for the Cavs:Â LeBron James, Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, Iman Shumpert, Kyrie Irving. And, for the Kings:Â Rudy Gay, Anthony Tolliver, DeMarcus Cousins, Garrett Temple, Darren Collison.
Prediction: Cavs finally get their engine revving and hit on nearly all cylinders from downtown to race past the Kings 125-112.
Stay up late and catch all of the action on Fox Sports Ohio starting at 10:30pm EST (7:30 for you west coasters like me).
After holding them to 15 in the first, Cavs have given up at least 28 each quarter.
Gotta save their D for Monday…
TWOZUS!!
Tough to get that call… kudos KK!
Very little D this quarter from either team…
Would you rather take a charge from Lebron or Demarcus? #Nowin
Lebron. He’s graceful enough to take the contact but still move his body to get the shot. Cousins will just trample you.
Agreed.
…with the notable people exception of Jason Day’s wife.
Don’t ask Jason Day’s wife…
Ha!
Oh man, that was brutal. That was a scary night.
LBJ with 13 assists… Cavs now beyond the magic NOMAD number with 24…
LeBron with 1 rebound?
Kev snagging them all…
Speaking of Love, why hasn’t he been on the Court for a while?
Here he comes…
I was wondering what happened to Love this game… Then I saw 18 boards 0.o when you have to do that against Boogie, it takes something from your ability to score… that is exhausting work.
That was a great recognition pass from Frye and great move without the ball from Bron…
Can’t stop RJ on the runaway dunk…
Lawson has resurrected his mid ranger…
Lebron’s like, If I’m going to be playing 40 minutes a game, I’m shooting from 33 feet out.
Lue just can’t cut his minutes. It must have been total bs when he said James’ load would go down in Jan/Feb
Yeah. I wish they would. I wish he’d have a hard limit and force the other guys to learn how to play without him.
It’s pretty silly…I offer as evidence that Cols is all in favor of it…
Man, lots of late calls from the refs tonight…
Life in today’s NBA… late calls are en vogue…
Look how empty the paint is with this lineup…
Hey EG, without looking, name the teams Barnes has played for in his career.
Kings (twice), Warriors, Knicks?
And Clippers (twice), Lakers, Grizzlies, Magic, Suns, Sixers – 9 teams in 13 years!
Only active player with more is Ish Smith, with an astounding 10 teams over 6 seasons.
Wow. I always thought that he was a good rotation player.
I didn’t see this… great question tho!
C FRYE!!
Look at KK rip down that rebound!!
Shump needs to watch KK. No boards for Shump at all in 22 mins and Korver with 5 in 18. Always think Shump needs to get more boards
KK 16 points in 17 minutes…
Korver has quadrupled his points total from the first two games tonight, and infinitied his three point scoring.
So refreshing to see someone moving without the ball like Korver….
Man, I can really get used to Korver knocking down those threes.

Ye Gods. Kings on 25-10 run over last 7 minutes. Bron gonna end up playing 40 minutes again.
Well, he played 42 as a rookie…
Can you believe how long its been since he was a rookie?
Amazing… that was three jobs ago for me…
A repeat of Phoenix and the Nets games in progress.
Some god awful officiating in this one….

This is definitely a game that should go down to the wire. smh
What kind of toss was that??
FOUR POINT OPPORTUNITY!
Damn RJ…
Twice we’ve gone up 21 and both times let them cut it to 10 within minutes.
Dave Joeger gets on my nerves for some reason

Cousins is stupid good.
Tristan with the ball in his hands at the end of a qyarter?
I can’t remember the last time we jumped out big on an inferior opponent and then finished the job so the starters could rest. We get up early and then just stop playing D.
Just not what this team does…
It makes me wonder if its a rotation thing. Leaving guys in too long without a break and they stop giving full effort on D. Maybe spread the minutes out more so the come of the bench with energy and then get them off before the pull back on the throttle.
Benches usually score points as well to facilitate that. We get nothing
Bench has 21 through 3 quarters tonight.
Just nice to have a lead going into the fourth for a change…
good point.
Feel like this would be a good KShrimp game going against guys like Collison and Lawson…
Yes
Need to feed Love more in the post
Love with 18 boards already…
Cousins has the worst body language in professional sports. I want to quit just watching him.
Man, we’ve given up 18 points on 11 turnovers. Kings have 18 turnovers but only 20 points off.
Ty Lawson is still pretty fast…
Ky-three!
https://vine.co/v/53i5Q022wbq
SHUMPMAN
And just like that… the lead is back to 16…
Kinda like that Lue hasn’t really called timeout to re-focus them. Making them figure it out on their own.
What a great end to end play!
Uncle Drew And One!
How about that lineup that ended the first half? Kyrie, Korver, Love, Tristan, LeBron
Future starting lineup…
All through the playoffs. Jr and shump or his replacement coming off the bench will be great.
I don’t know. I’ve always preferred Shump starting until J.R. really improved defensively. The more Shump plays with the starters, the less he is handling the ball and the more he’s just 3 and D, which is what he’s good at.
He’s been good at the three in this one… but not so much the D…
Blocked by Bron!
Great interior passing by KLove to TT…
Love and Irving have been crap offensively for pretty much this whole road trip.
Disagree about Love… Kyrie yes…
He’s only had one game where he shot above 39%
Still getting his points and boards though…
Only the Phoenix game was any good. On the trip he’s averaging 16.8 points on 15 shots per game.
You’d have taken that all day last year…
W/ their win tonight over Charlotte, the 76rs officially Jen the longest current winning streak in the eastern conference at 3. Yikes.
Cavs back to not closing out on shooters…
TT finger roll… something you don’t see everyday…
This team just refuses to make it easy on itself.
So far this looks like one if those slow third quarters from two, years ago
LeBron with some pretty uninterested transition D…
Like any NBA team… the Kings aren’t just going to go away… Cavs need to refocus
Love seems like a different player all of a sudden. Didn’t see the ball enough early?
TT might need to switch hands on free throws in the offseason
Rudy Gay is a lot longer than I remember…
Korver could legit double his scoring average while JR is injured.

BTW, nice to see your Vegas book up and running tonight again !! I think the Cavs can surely hit 125 but can the Kings reach 112? Need a 25-30 pt Cavs lead going into the 4th, and then a monster garbage time quarter for the Kings.
Ha! For sure… Kings averaging about 103 this year, but guys like Gay and Collison have been scoring a lot lately… and the way the Cavs have been ignoring the three line lately, thought they’d probably get close to that…
Cavs with almost as many assists in the first half (13) as in the whole game against Portland (15)
Korver with 4 boards… #unexpected
Have seen so much hustle from him even when he wasn’t hitting. Total pro
Could have 3 guys with double-doubles tonight. Man, Korver running off those screens with the instant pull-up sure is nice to be on this end of things.
We haven’t had a guy who is willing to do that for twos AND threes. Looks so much like ray Allen on the heat
Totally agree with the Ray Ray joining the Heat analogy…
Definitely a breath of fresh air. You’re right, as many weapons as the Cavs had prior to Korver, that wasn’t one of them.
Gotta say Lue’s start for shumpert paid off in confidence for him.
His explanation of Shump trying to do too much with the second unit makes a lot of sense… I mean there is a reason http://www.pleasestopdribblingshump.com was almost purchased by CtB…
Somewhat surprised by the poor showing by the Kings. Haven’t played since Tuesday. This is probably their biggest home game of the season.
Wow, just saw this: Sixers with first 3 game winning streak in THREE YEARS.
That Embiid guy is pretty good…
Embiid does indeed look like the real deal. Give him two years then I would LOVE to see an Embiid-Cousins battle. That’s going to be fun to watch.
I would expect if he stays healthy, he will be the best big man in the league in about another year and a half. His per 36 numbers are ridiculous.
Love Tristan thompson. So few guys can affect a game in as many ways
Starters are all at least +17
Just saw this: Mike Dunleavy was +18 tonight for the Hawks. WTH?
He was in tank mode on Cavs….he’ll be putting up MVP numbers the rest of the season…
TT fighting hard!
