Live Thread: Cavs @ Hawks (or, Drama King Theater)
2017-04-09After one of the most embarrassing defeats of recent memory, a Cavalier loss to a Hawks team resting five starters, Cleveland looks for revenge. What better way to right the ship (yet again) than against that same Hawks team, not resting five starters. I haven’t gotten the full injury report yet, but it appears that Schroeder, Howard, Bazemore, and Millsap will be back while Sefolosha remains on the DL. For Cleveland, given that he left the game with knee pain Friday, I expect Kyrie Irving to sit. Tristan Thompson will probably continue to rest his thumb as well.
There’s not much more to say about what needs to happen other than that Cleveland needs to avoid the “Tortoise and Hare” analogy that Cory Hughey so aptly applied to Friday’s debacle. Most of us can agree, this Cleveland team is maddening. It’s hard to watch and root for a team that so consistently sabotages itself with atrocious decision making, wildly inconsistent effort, and a consistent “failure to launch.”
We’ve all been around these kinds of people: Drama Kings. We forget that the Cavs have more than their fair share of divas that make drama if there is none already existing. Look at the roster. We all know about J.R.’s trials in New York, his literal trials in Denver, and his um, “flair for the dramatic” throughout last season’s victory celebrations. Flat Earth Kyrie has had his own issues: pouting after a CtB interview with Brian Windhorst, baby mama drama, and more than one “talking to” by the King. Kevin Love? He whined his way out of Minny. Shump? DUI and inexplicable penchant for dribbling turnovers. Deron Williams forced a trade from Utah, sunsetted Jerry Sloan’s career, stunk up the join in Brooklyn, and was kicked out of an all-you-can-eat buffet in Dallas for trying to stay a whole day. (OK, I made that last one up). Tristan Thompson has his own baby issues, and fair or not, could not have picked a more high profile girlfriend in Khloe Kardashian.
Add in Larry “I’m gonna retire for two plus years to smoke pot” Sanders, domestic violence Liggins, and seasonal passive aggressive disorder suffering Mr. Decision, himself: LeBron – subtweeting -can’t settle on a freaking sane free throw stroke – just decides not to play defense sometimes – James. Oh, and don’t forget the owner, Comic Sans Dan. It’s a wonder this team doesn’t have more drama. Sure, all these moments represent guys at their worst, and lord knows I wouldn’t want anyone going through my past with a fine tooth comb, but it seems like David Griffn has an aversion to guys who just put their heads down and get the job done and then go home at night. How did Cleveland get so many of these divas on the same team? I’m sure that David Blatt felt like a babysitter more than once, and that LeBron’s top assistant Tyronn Lue does too.
And I’m the last one who should be calling anyone out for any of this. Anyone who knows me knows that I suffer from emotional oscillations, seasonal malaise, and a tendency to create obstacles for myself. For some, it’s human nature. I struggle with putting it all together on a daily basis. I wish I knew how to be more… consistent. Â Maybe it’s just who we are as a species. I mean, look at the history of humanity. It’s a wonder we made it out of the cold war alive. And have you “read the news today? Oh boy.” Maybe – definitely – this Cavs team reflects the world around them.
But the world keeps on spinning. Somehow I figure it out, somehow we figure it out. We haven’t blown ourselves up yet. Why? Eventually, to be successful, one has to stop being a drama king and just do their freaking job, at least in sustainable bursts. Just be boringly effective. It seems so damned hard for these guys. Maybe it’s too much to ask. So maybe, just don’t play like a-holes. That’s all I ask. Let’s hope it starts this afternoon for Cleveland…
Well that was cathartic. Go Cavs.
Update:
The Cavs have waived DeAndre Liggins. Kyrie Irving will play, as will Paul Millsap. Rumors are the Cavs may be interested in Anderson Varejao, and, Â of course, Dahntay Jones’ and Ray Allen’s names have also come up as possible replacements for Liggins’ roster spot.
D.Liggins starting 19 games for CLE this season and then being cut 3 games before the playoffs says a lot about how crazy this year's been

Tribe gets swept. Just waiting for the Browns to complete the day by trading the No. 1 pick for washed-up Jets veterans.
SO Dahtny Jones is the guy that replaced Liggins? Lue must have hated Liggins.
Holy cow, Dahntay hasn’t played all year.
Maybe he can galvanize this crew by punching somebody in the jewels…
My head is still exploding over this game! Ty Lue overplayed the starters because he didn’t trust bench. Nevermind the obvious is that one of these bench slackers need benched and he’s too lame to do it. We will just pile on minutes on starters and get a big lead. Funny thing happen in the 4th quarter…. it didn’t work! They got tired, he sent out the lamo’s again from the bench to lose the lead in lightning speed. The MOST idiotic thing that no one can answer is… WHy No Channing Frye in the 4th??? He was effective in… Read more »
???
Now I understand why Kyrie was mad about this play.
And the out-of-bounds feet could have been reviewed, right? If anyone had been on the ball, so to speak.
Exactly, but they didn’t. I understand that the Cavs deserved it but at the same time this play is just ridiculous.
the last i watched of the game…cavs were up 86-63…..i still can’t believe they lost…i wonder if team was satisfied enough after Boston win that once pressure starts in playoffs they will be in good shape….i mean the hawks crushed them two nights ago and then this….so weird….either Boston sucks really bad…or Cavs team is for sure in trouble every round of playoffs
I kept track of the game on my phone and that last quarter was surreal. WTF???
Coach Lue should be ashamed to receive a paycheck this month.
Wait a minute…Lue is a coach?!!
Can a GM take over and tell his coach you’re not going to play my top players the rest of the season.
I’d love to know one thing Shumpert does that makes him worth 10 mill. Hell, one thing he does that makes him worth a roster spot. He can shut down much shorter players one on one. Sometimes. A lot of guys can do that, including a lot of guys in the D league. He goes through streaks where he’s a decent three point shooter. See above.
Delly would not allow this to happen
No he would not
The Drama Kings in their new production of Monster Chiller Horror Theater
So Liggins is waived but Lue and Shumpert are still with the team… How is that possible?
Exactly what I was going to ask. The Cavs biggest problem is the second string is old and slow. So they never play Liggins? And cut him? Today would have been an easy win with Liggins.
If I was David Griffin I would be asking Lue, can you please play they guys that I brought here and give some rest to our starters?
Unbelievable.
No, he needs to win every regular season game, even if in doing so he loses every game and plays the starters 40+ minutes every game. Crazy like a doorknob.
Exactly. These are the games that matter!
Everything is AWESOME!
Some bad bad officiating in this game. Obviously the intent was to win in regulation, and they should have with a reasonable out of bounds play. Another place where they miss Delly’s smarts and energy. After the beat down of the Celtic is seems like they can take them, but otherwise I think the Cavs are 1/3 to make it out of the Eastern Conference, and probably 1/3 to beat the Warriors or Spurs. Long odds for a repeat.
This was also a game Lue should have gotten himself ejected midway through the fourth when the abhorrent officiating was in full flow. Show some fight!
That would have been a better look for him
I think as well we need to appreciate that because the margins for error at NBA level are so small, fatigue plays an enormous role. If they’ve played 35 minutes there is no way Irving misses that FT and no way Love throws such a poor inbounds. Also far less likely LeBron even raises his arms to contest that Millsap 3. We’ve had plenty of games where laziness and lack of effort have cost us, but that one was solely on Lue.
The mismanagement of minutes has been astounding. Coming in to the season, there was a clear plan for Lebron’s minutes, and it was completely ignored. Global Warming deniers can’t believe how clearly the Cavs are ignoring science.
On the other hand, the players, whoever they are and however many minutes they’ve played, need to be able to hold a 26 point lead for 12 minutes.
Even the Warriors can’t believe how bad they blew that lead.
How the hell did Kyrie make that shot with the amount of minutes Lue forced him into. This loss is entirely on Lue. Who can blame our starters from easing off when they know they’re gonna have to pace themselves for 40+ minutes a night cause their coach is too incompetent to realise the side effects of such a strategy. It’s a cycle of fatigue as well. The starters play a ton of minutes and the bench play none, so the starters get tired and the bench lose fitness, so the results start slipping and the bench play worse, so… Read more »
It’s inexcusable! If Frye wasn’t hurt, even more so!
This team sucks. I’d like to hear Cols explanation
“They don’t care about the regular season”
“Cavs are going to the finals, guaranteed”
“Remember the lessons of the last two years”
“Cavs are awesome”
I reckon option 3
Over/Under on when Lue gets fired?
It’s a good job I don’t own a team as I’d be one of the quick triggered owners fans hate. I would fire him tonight.
Haha. That three makes it a one pointer. That’s the biggest collapse since the Cavs blew a twenty six point lead to the heat during LeExodus
Two nights ago everyone was like, “that was the most embarrassing Cavs loss ever,” and they were like, “Hold my drink.”
I’m done. This is ridiculous. We don’t deserve a championship this season.
This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen. Lue should be fired.
No question, they could have had Thibs
Agreed.
Agreed.
After the last couple of months, I agree. I’d be pretty surprised if the Cavs make the finals at the rate they are going, and they may lose in the 2nd round. Lue probably sees Mark Jackson in his rear view mirror.
Mark Jackson would be the worst possible hire, IMO.
Then for sure Cavs will hire him one day
We suck. Not worth watching.
Somebody please just take a knee. Lebron needs to ice so he can play 44 minutes tomorrow in Miami.
Kyrie with the most pathetic sequence e of the season.
Uncle! Mercy!
Cant believe we let the roll the ball to halfcourt there. Awful.
Can we have the Cavs bench? No cause our coach likes to burn his starters to exhaustion
Pathetic. Blew the inbounds.
Muacala. Lol. Big ft miss by Kevin.
Kev make it.
Refs got overruled by Jersey.

Wow. An actual play! Huge shot from Korver.
Ugh, what is with this team?
Can the refs take away the 3 pointer? That was just a hard screen. Nothing more.
Hells yeah https://cdn1.lockerdome.com/uploads/2b51f882522ce49606831f8d3c0c79ade7bd22e32e0f00c7374135a3bedfe8c3_large
If we are throwing stones, let’s discuss Kyrie staring at the ball after the jump and the not putting his hands up while Millsap shot to end regulation.
Here comes another Kyrie iso.
Can’t wait to hear the post game.
Cavs deserve to lose this…
I’m rooting for the Hawks.
Man only a miracle will help the Cavs repeat their ship.
We are literally running on nothing. Lue is 100% gone if we don’t win it all.
Refs gifted the Hawks. This one is over.
I don’t care if Stevie Wonder officiated this game. Cavs gifted the Hawks.
For those keeping score at home, Shumpert is -33 in his last 30 minutes. He literally bleeds a point a minute.
James fouls out. Yes, the refs are poor. However we should not be in this spot. That is on us.
I am currently, unfortunately, listening to the Atlanta broadcast and those announcers couldn’t even admit that wasn’t a foul…
Thank God LBJ fouled out. Its the only way the guy can get a sip of water.
JR got all ball too. Jeebus
The thing Lue needs to grasp is when you have outplayed a team for three quarters and have a 20+ point lead you have to rest the key players. Even if a come back is made at least they would be well rested to finish the game off.
Make up call there
Literally didn’t touch Millsap there. What a horrid call.
