Cavs Sign Derrick Rose to One Year Deal
2017-07-24Per Brian Windhorst and Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Derrick Rose were in serious talks about a 1-year deal late on Thursday morning.
Derrick Rose has committed to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers and completed his physical exam today, league sources tell The Vertical.

As of this evening, reports indicate that Rose signed for the minimum of a player with his tenure, $2.1 million dollars for the 2017-2018 season. The former MVP will suit up for the Cavs, either as the starter or the first bench guard, depending on how the Kyrie Irving situation shakes out. The Lakers and Cavs were reported to be the two teams vying for Derrick’s services, but with the turmoil caused by the leak of Kyrie Irving’s trade demands, the possibility of starting for the reigning eastern conference champions, surely trumped the opportuntity to mentor Lonzo Ball.
According to ESPN’s Ian Begley, Rose was once seeking a five year, $150 million dollar contract this offseason, but the Knicks poor showing and turbulent season, combined with Rose’s unexpected and unexplained disappearance before a Monday night game in January, dramatically dropped his demand around the league. In addition Rose faced a long and distracting $21.5 million civil rape case before last season, and was eventually found “not liable.” Still, the lurid details of the case had to turn off many a suitor.
While the fit may be somewhat odd on the court, as Rose is not the best three point shooter (21.7% in 2016-17 and career 29.8% mark), the Cavs are looking to add scoring and playmaking to match up with other contenders in the league. Derrick Rose had a surprising year for the New York Knicks, averaging 18 ppg on 47.1% shooting while adding 4.4 apg on 2.3 topg. The signing of Rose, however, begs the question on the Jose Calderon signing as both play the same position and aren’t considered to be above average defenders. With the Cavs rumored to be looking to package Iman Shumpert in Kyrie Irving deals, a defensive guard could be a must.
With the signing, the Cavs are at 15 players and still well into the luxury tax, but as we all know, this team is very much in flux.
It’s actually crazy how many physical wings/forwards Boston has. If they had Lebron and no IT, that would probably be the perfect roster to take on the Warriors.
Good point, you’re right.
So apparently the suns have said they aren’t going to trade josh Jackson in an Irving trade, which nixes my preferred Jackson Bledsoe for Irving trade. Drat.
Three teamer. We get Bledsoe and Middleton and a pick.
Jackson was the main draw for me.
Rookie who can’t shoot? He will
Never be as good as Middleton is now.
You are out of your mind. James couldn’t shoot consistently for years. Jackson is inconsistent, not incapable.
Did you just compare Jackson to LeBron? Jackson will never be as good a Middleton. This isn’t controversial.
Yeah, it is. Plenty of folks had him as the best prospect on the draft and he’d have gone No. 1 in plenty of other drafts. This one happened to be loaded.
He shot 38 percent from 3 in college. He wasn’t always consistent but he has shown he can shoot. Once again you show yourself as knowing nothing about a topic, yet trying to pass as if you do. Clearly you haven’t watched much college ball, Middleton, or Jackson.
Yeah. Cols chooses bizarre hills to die on.
I would be thrilled with Bledsoe and Middleton. We’d replace scoring and playmaking ability at PG and add length and 3pt shooting at SG.
I don’t put much stock into the Suns saying they won’t trade him. Until there is an actual deal to be finalized, why would they be like “Oh yeah, we’d definitely trade this kid that we just drafted and told we wanted to build around.” There is no upside to that. If you announce you’re willing to trade the guy, and then a trade doesn’t materialize, he’s potentially mad and then you have to deal with that.
I DID NOT SEE PRESS CONFERENCE TODAY ( GILBERT / ALTMAN ) SOUNDS AS IF ALTMAN CAME ACROSS VERY IMPRESSIVE WITH HIS DEMEANOR/ ANSWERS ——GILBERT AND KOLBY BOTH FEEL THAT KY WILL BE PART OF THE CAVS NEXT YEAR / EVERYTHING WILL BE RESOLVED / MEDIA BLEW IT OUT OF PROPORTION SOMEWHAT) ………..DOES NOT APPEAR THAT THEY ARE IN PANIC MODE AND READY TO JUST DUMP KY AT THE FIRST CHANCE ……..KY/ LEBRON NEED TO GO BEHIND CLOSED DOORS AND JUST MAN UP AND IRON THINGS OUT ——-” ALL IN THE LAND ” C’MON GUYS WE STILL HAVE ANOTHER TITLE… Read more »
I heard the news conference and although Altman sounds smart and qualified for the position, when it came to the Kyrie situation both him and Dan just evaded the questions. They also didn’t negate the rumors of Kyrie wanting a trade, so yeah, he asked for one.
Regarding Dan’s answer about Kyrie, I actually took it in a negative manner because his response was, “Kyrie is under contract for 2/3 more years, he’s expected to be there.”. There wasn’t any friendliness to the answer and more of a “though shit for him” type of attitude.
It definitely wasn’t a “tough shit” attitude. It was a typical PC response. If Kyrie was legitimately offended by that, he’s an absolute girl and should be traded immediately.
I would be shocked if Irving is on the Cavs come training camp. Altman and Gilbert had standard political responses.
I dunno. Probably the best thing is to hope it blows over. And it can.
This is what they have to say to try to get some leverage in trade talks.
If I had Lebron’s ear, I would tell him the smart move is to make peace with Kyrie. Meet him face to face, tell him you’re not mad, tell him you understand, and clear the air in a way that would make him feel like they can move forward for another year. Then hold a press conference, the two of them, to talk about it all and how they are moving past it. That way, Kyrie’s value goes up, because he’s no longer seen as a headcase. He’s more mature and less delusional. It was a young man’s lapse in… Read more »
Great points, and I agree. There is no rush to trade him and there shouldn’t be. The Cavs’ organization has the leverage unless Kyrie decides to become a cancer, which I just can’t see him doing (he has said for a long time how much he respects LeBron).
If someone blows us away with an offer, great. If not, move forward with him on the roster.
Right, There is no rush. He probably won’t be cancer, but it will be awkward.
As for what anyone says, actions speak louder than words. Kyrie lucked into a perfect situation for his career, and now he thinks he is too good for it. Most players never get to the finals. Sure wish we could trade him for a young Barkley.

Trump and his Republican enablers suck.
Why is this news? Gilbert said something that everyone else said. BFD.
Cause you don’t badmouth people you want to do business with. He has to be smartest guy in room tough. Speaks to his latent insecurity.
Altman just said Rose is coming off the bench. Praise the FSM.
I’m pumped everyone involved knew he was going to be a backup. Sucks Kyrie isn’t starting. It would had been nice having the two then trying to outdo one another during the regular season attacking the basket.
*pumped isn’t the right word, rather happy.
Wait, so Calderon is starting?
God I hope not lol. The fo needs to trade for a valuable pg or we are in trouble.
They know this, which is why they said Rose isn’t starting. We are going to get Bledsoe and Middleton and maybe a pick out of this.
Kay Felder. It’s. Time. For. Kay.
ELCOME BACK EVIL —-NOT MUCH HAPPENING ……THE USUAL …..KY DEMANDING A TRADE AND PUBLICLY BASHING LEBRON………..CAVS HIRED A NEW G.M…..SIGNED D.ROSE ….HO HUM ——–THE MRS NOMAD LOOKS AS GREAT AS EVER AND THE HOPS ARE READY FOR HARVEST IN A FEW WEEKS —-JUST ANOTHER HO HUM SUMMER —HOW ABOUT YOURSELF ….AND YEAH THE INDIANS ARE WINNING
Thanks for the update NOMAD! Good to be back!
Also, warriorsfan continues to troll endlessly, Nate continues to think sucky players will be the difference, I keep telling people we are going to the Finals….
Also, in a CtB first, Cols replied to WF and forgot to put in any insults!
Either must be getting old, or the recent events are flipping everyone out.
