Live Thread: Cavs vs. Hawks

Seven teams remain without a win in this fledgling NBA season, and with both the Hawks and Cavs at 0-2, something’s got to give. Cleveland makes its home debut after giving up big second quarter runs to the Raptors and T-Wolves. The Hawks come in having given up 257 points to the Knicks and Grizzlies, with an average loss margin of 16.5.
Leading the Hawks have been Taurean Waller-Prince who has 25-5-5 and Trae Young who has led the team in minutes and posted 17-4-7 averages, while shooting a whopping seven treys per game. Sitting on his right hand and making him a driver is a key to stopping Trae who’s shooting 36% from three, but just 39% from two. The other key to beating the Hawks? Taking advantage of their turnovers. Atlanta’s coughed the ball up a whopping 43 times in two games.
Many think Atlanta’s the worst team in the league, but they have some dangerous players with Young, Prince, Cavalier irritant, Kent Bazemore, and Jeremy Lin.
In the injury department, it’s good news and bad news. The good news: Larry Nance is available to play after spraining his ankle late in preseason. The bad news: Sam Dekker is available to play after a head injury, Friday. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m happy that Dekker isn’t hurt seriously, but the less he plays the better for Cleveland.
For Atlanta, Peachtree Hoops reports that that John Collins, Dewaye Dedmon, Justin Anderson and Daniel Hamilton are out. Omari Spellman (ankle) was upgraded to questionable. Trae Young, Vince Carter, Tyler Dorsey and Alex Poythress are probable.
Kevin Love should have a good matchups tonight with Atlanta’s main line big men out, and we should see a good rookie duel between Young and Sexton. Keeping my fingers crossed that the Cavs come out hungry for their first win.
i don’t watch the games in real-time.. the human nervous system was not designed for this carnage.. the game gets saved, and reviewed or erased, based on the story and outcome.. i think this one gets deep-sixed.. i feel bad for the young bull.. at least the cavs didn’t pass on young, and only to be lit up tonight like a fine cuban cigar.. when i get a bad feeling.. it is almost 100% correct.. my sense of impending disaster is unmatched.. watch out folks.. big iceberg ahead..

They aren’t this bad. Will they be good? No but they could be and should be a lot better than this if they are trying to win. Tactical and preparational coaching errors. Young looked amazing against us, but has looked pedestrian against everyone else. We aren’t this bad defensively. We are if the players aren’t prepped or put into postions to succeed. Simple.
didn’t even catch game, but I thought Hawks were ‘worst team ever’….might be the Cavs….could be long winter, unless Cavs start making changes with players and or coaching staff.

I bet we stop hearing the “Tu Lue is a really good coach, he was just put in a bad position that last few years” narrative relatively quickly. Hawks are the worst team in the league and we are not competing.

I had some inkling of hope. But if the tactical rotational decisions remain the same and we see no improvement schematically on d, then I think we will know what most suspected for some time.
Ugh. What a horrid 3 quarters. What I don’t get is what the Cavs are even attempting to accomplish. Are they trying to just play their young guys? Or are they trying to win? Why isn’t Korver playing? Why is the shot selection so terrible…
Good question. Ask the coaching staff.
I think a lot has to do with everyone trying to play hero ball. Yes, Clarkson and Hood had good games but they don’t make the people around them better.
Add to that the fact that cLueless is trying to force Love into a position he no can longer play, and you have a team without any identity.
Also Sexton was trying to show off and got burned by Young. That was disappointing.
Clarkson and Hood had some nice moments, but pretty much all their shots came off of individual actions. Never really saw Sexton trying to get others involved either. Love’s shots pretty much come off his own accord. Cedi tried at times but had too many turnovers.
Gonna take more than 3 games to go from the LeBron system to something else I guess
Bit it wasn’t just three games. Is not like LeBron left the team last week. A full summer camp and pre-season should be enough time for a competent coach to install 5-6 offensive sets. Not too much to ask.
They had a whole summer to come up with a different offense see. Kerr installed the warriors offense over a single summer and began installing it in summer league. We know how that turned out versus Mark Jackson’s basic offense with the same personnel.
Touche. Well if there’s one set they’ve installed, its the PnR to get an 18 footer. They’ve got that play down… ugh

Not counting elbow sets as postups or vice versa for clarification. Way different position on the floor and different options available. Though if you were just remarking on posts in the low block/low block extended, completely agree.

Can Becky Hammond be offered Lue’s job even though she’s an assistant?
Is Becky Hammond some sort of coaching genius? I don’t get the obsession with her, other than that it would be progressive to make her the first female NBA head coach. I would have nothing against hiring her, I’m just unaware of her skill set as a head coach.
Female, smart, Spurs org. But I have no idea how capable she is either. If someone hires her one day it will be a gutsy move.
Yeah… I mean Mike Brown was from the Spurs .org, and Dan fires him twice!
You also have to hope players will listen to her even though she never played in the NBA…it’d be risky, even if she is an awesome coach.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they have her pegged as Pop’s successor. They have the organizational and institutional strength to make that work. She was lead assistant last year I think, or at least she took over for pop wheb his wife passed.
Spurs won summer league with her at the helm a couple years back.
Something has to change coaching wise. They aren’t this bad. Not even close.

With a halfway decent coaching staff this team could win between 35-40 games in the east. We don’t have one unfortunately. Bad to awful coaching. So it was Lue/longibardi after all
So the question is, will the Cavs win a game before November? Will Dan Gilbert join Fred and AC to tell us that Sexton is only 19?
If they can’t beat this team, not sure who they can beat. Orlando. Maybe.
