Live Thread: Hornets @ Cavs
2019-12-18The Hornets are in Cleveland tonight after defeating the Kings 110-102 less than 24 hours ago. Charlotte sits at 13-17 and has been a bit of a surprise this season. They have seen legit contributions from their young players: Devonte’ Graham, PJ Washington, Miles Bridges, and Malik Monk. Graham had a 40 point game recently and is averaging 19.4 points a game while hitting 3.7 3s a night and dishing out 7.4 dimes.
Washington and Bridges are averaging a little over 12 points a game. And, you can’t forget that Charlotte’s vets like Nicolas Batum, Terry Rozier, and Cody Zellar are all contributing too. Essentially, they’re the Cavs with better veteran support and young guys that look more promising.
The Cavs have won just six games this season, but they should have a chance tonight. The one issue the Cavs will have is making sure the Hornet’s guards aren’t eating them alive drive after after against Collin Sexton and Darius Garland.
Usually I talk about three things to watch during the game at this point in the live thread, but that’s pointless. Anyone who has watched this team knows what they have to do to win: Get Kevin Love the ball, play some defense, and don’t take stupid shots.
Now, on to Kevin Love and why he probably isn’t getting traded.
He just doesn’t have it anymore and makes too much. Since joining the Cavs he is averaging near career lows. He’s getting just 15.9 points and 10.6 boards a night. Those aren’t bad numbers, they just aren’t numbers you want to see from a guy who is making over $28 million a season over the next three years. And for the people that say he’s getting 2.7 assists per game, that’s whatever. He faces a clear double team when he touches the ball because this Cavs team is so unstacked with talent.
The worst part about Love’s down turn productivity wise on offense is that he is actually getting his touches down low right now and getting around the same points per possession that he always has in Cleveland, despite what watching the games show us.
Here are his front court touches this season:
Here are last season’s touches:
And, for good measure, here are his touches during the Cavs’ championship season:
His points per touch and what not are elevated compared to previous seasons. He just isn’t the same outside threat anymore, statically or meaning wise. He’s hitting just two 3s a night at a 35.7% rate. It’s the worst as far as percentage in his time at Cleveland, and that’s arguably why a team would want him: to stretch the floor. Furthermore, the fact that his 3s truly down such a huge and his impact has been so low this year really points to his need to play with bonafide stars. I’m talking the LeBron James effect people. LeBron made him look a lot better than he was. Why the Cavs front office didn’t realize this after actually watching him play without James will boogle my mind forever.
Here are Karl-Anthony Towns tocuh stats. He’s more efficient in nearly every way:
While Love is no Towns in any means, Towns actually makes less money than him this year and just slightly more over the following years. Towns is also hitting 41.8% from deep, making 3.6 3s a night. He’s getting 26.5 per game. And, well, defensively, it’s not even a conversation.
The fact that monetarily this comparison is valid is the crux of the issue with finding a trade for Love. He’s a number three or four guy being paid number one guy money. That’s fine if your team can pay for that and field a reasonable bench still. That’s just not possible in the recently even more modern NBA where teams aren’t trying to stack three huge contracts together though. Teams have learned that sub-star guys don’t equal multiple role players. Until that fact somehow changes, Love is going to stay on the Cavs.
Sexton does something dumb and gets bailed out.
Yep. Cannot see what’s in front of him at all.
Nice pass Love!
Fantastic skip.from.love to Cedi
Ran a play for cedi. Nice
I like Garland…I can see what he’ll be if he works at it…
I mean. Sure. but fifth pick of the draft?
Someone was going to pick him around there…I think the Cavs should have taken a Wing, but I think Garland will be good…not this year though…
I like his understanding of the game… just a question of if he can do enough to overcome the lack of athleticism and size.
This
Not a great pass Kev.
GARLAND TO TT!!!! GREAT PLAY!
GREAT DEFENSE GARLAND!
He stayed in front of him, but rozier still got to within five feet, just due to being able to bounce him back. Needs to put on cp3 like muscle.
Nic e d sexton
Huge love Trey. Get him the ball on kickouts and off pops and he will hit it. Just don’t ask him to create threes for himself.
CLUTCH LOVE THREE!!!! TT WITH THE KICK OUT! Thought Love made a bad decision handing the ball off to Sexton in that sequence, but it all worked out.
Any other team or this one any other night would be beating Cleveland now.
Yeah, played well early, been rough since then…
That and Charlotte has been sloppy as hell.
That offensive foul call on love was trash
Man, how many TO is that? Seems like 30…
20 turnovers…insane…
ESPN has 18, but either way it’s bad.
Beilein back with the starters, get an open Cedi look, just missed.
Cavs have given them alot of wide wide wide open threes they haven’t made.
Looks like Charlotte went to a zone defense there.
Larry’s unwillingness to look for his own offense is problematic.
Miles Bridges with a terrible defensive play there.
Scary Terry lol
I don’t know why you’d ever bite on Garland going left.
Bacon with a travel on that drive, the one they always call cedi for.
HUGE THREE KPJ!!! that was clutch!!!
LMFAO at Rozier
Kpj’s catch and shoot j is ugly but effective
He can make those sometimes. He is probably shooting about 5% on stepbacks.
Danger Will Robinson…lead almost back to 10.
That was a rough stretch.
Poor close to the qtr. Feel like we scored about about 4 pts in the last 4 minutes with numerous tovs.
Tons of turnovers in general, Sexton with 4, Cedi with 3, Thompson/Garland/Delly each with 2.
Really sloppy quarter, it’s sort of a game again, unfortunately…
Nice defense KPJ…. forced the bad shot. Garland bad game management there.
Cavs got waaaay too casual there. Not good.
Cavs gotta refocus.
Cavs getting sloppy. Gotta be careful here
LNJ passed up a wide open 3 again… incredible pass nevertheless from KPJ
I’d love to see mkg on a good team
Larry needs to out up 200 catch and shoot threes a day till he stops thinking about them.
Feel like Marvin Williams has been in this league forever and on the hornets his entire career?
started out in ATL I thought.
Drafted by Atlanta over CP3. Then on the Hornets for forever.
That’s right. Forgot about atl.
nice pass Clarkson, LNJ just missed. Fantastic hustle on the boards!
Wish Sexton could hit open catch and shoots still.
Cedi with the block… makes up for missing TT on the roll LMFAO!!!
What is cedi on tonight
That’s what happens when you go up weak, Marvin!
Incredible defensive possession again there…. Love learned from his mistake, controlled closeout on Zeller that time.
Cedi with the block!
Sexton needs to study Tony Parker film. That was a nice attempt though.
Yeah. Sometimes full speed is not the answer on a break or going to the bucket, especially if you cut off passing angles.
When Sexton learns how to get into the body? Watch out.
I mean if he becomes like a career 65% shooter at the rim as a small point guard, well there has only been one Tony Parker…..
I just want him to realize he needs to take into account teammates and defenders around him and make the correct decisions.
Love with the old man game, easy money.
that was a classic Delly play!!!
Beat a path to the line
Love is above average on open Trey’s. Just need to find the open man.
GREAT HOCKEY ASSIST SEXTON! KLOVE FOR THREE!
bad turnover Cedi…. 5 turnovers in five minutes.
They should’ve let Delly shoot that.
Sexton drive and kick to open man in the corner…one of his best plays of the year…
That was beautiful- Sexton drawing all the D, two shooters to pick from
Well, one…
Lol
Ha brutal but true
We have to take advantage of this team. Dunno what they normally look like, but it is there for the taking. They have a small backcourt and are on a back to back. Bury them this qtr.
Sexton needs to learn to pause at the free throw line on the break when he has defenders in front of him. The stutter should help him and give him better angles
Love with some nice things this half.
Bad shot, bad decision Garland… bad decision Sexton, probably should’ve just shot that floater.
WOW —MENTIONED I WOULD JUST BE ‘BREEZING THRU ‘—–MAN LOOKS LIKE THE CAVS ARE ” BLOWING THRU ” —SEXTON PERFECT FROM THE FIELD —WILL PROBABLY JINX HIM NOW
Cedi right idea, wrong execution, saw that pass a little too late.
LOVE TAKES THE CHARGE!
GARLAND FOR THREE!!!
Bismack should play In Charlotte for 20 years
I want Brad on every broadcast more than I want Fratello. And I really want Fratello.
Pretty sure James Borrego ran a funeral home in the old west
K love from deeeeep
Jude, you podding?
THAT WAS GREAT DEFENSE FROM THE CAVS!!! DAUGHRETY LOVES IT!
Yeah. They had some bad breakdowns. And some good stops. Inconsistent, but encouraging
Kev showing the range.
Way to string 9ut that d by the cavs
