Live Thread: Cavs @ Knicks, Game 4 NBA Playoffs
2023-04-23Good morning CtB!
The Cavs wrap up their Broadway series with a Sunday matinee performance in Midtown Manhattan as they take on the New York Knicks for game four of their seven game series. The Cavs suffered an embarrassing 99-79 loss on Friday night, and left many fans distressed and looking for answers. The Cavs were outassisted, outrebounded, and loss the turnover battle with an unacceptable 20 turnovers in the game. If they want to avoid an elimination game, they will have to do what they did in game two: hustle for rebounds, share the ball, and hit some threes. It sounds like Darius Garland’s ankle is good enough to play on, and the only question for the Knicks is whether to keep struggling guard Quentin Grimes in the rotation.
There were more than a few Cavs fans criticizing J.B. Bickerstaff’s decision to start Caris LeVert over Isaac Okoro, but don’t count yours truly among them. The biggest problem I have with Bickerstaff’s rotations is not going back to Dean Wade, who was a big regular season contributor to the Cavs’ success this season. But it’s hard to criticize Bickerstaff for doing that when Wade performed so poorly game one. At the end of the day, the Cavs’ problems in game one and three have much more to do with the young players Darius Garland and Evan Mobley not being able to hit any shots, and Cavs’ most important reserve Cedi Osman crapping the bed off the bench. Taking a bigger picture view, there certainly is the belief that J.B. Bickerstaff can’t coach offense, it was a criticism that dogged him in Memphis and Houston and is coming to fruition again under the intense scrutiny of the NBA playoffs. Does Sam Merrill need to make an appearance? That’s the last quiver J.B. has to goose this offense. For what it’s worth, I’d much rather see Merrill than Ricky Rubio, which hurts to say. Checking in on the calculator, tells the story:
Cavs’ offensive rating in the playoffs: 100.7
Cavs’ defensive rating in the playoffs: 102.5
There were a lot of fans who wanted to crow about this team’s “top 10” offense during the regular season, but the eye test revealed a troubling pattern: Playing Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley together hamstrings the offense, and playing non-shooting perimeter players such as Ricky Rubio, Lamar Stevens, and Isaac Okoro further hamstrings the offense. The Cavs need to enter the 21st century of the NBA, where there’s a premium put on role players who can actually shoot a jump shot. The fate of Spidaland rests on whether Danny Green, Caris LeVert, and Cedi Osman can hit a three. If they aren’t, then J.B. needs to try Dean Wade and Sam Merrill to try and fit the bill.
To Put a Fine Point on It:
Heavy sigh. We REALLY do not need to keep doing this but…

Brunson is 4-18 shooting against LeVert. The Knicks have an 85 oRTG in the 67 possessions that LeVert has guarded Brunson. The idea that they need to start Okoro for defense is baffling and, frankly, wrong

Feel like there is some second guessing around starting LeVert and I don't get it? He's the only option that allows you to play Garland and Mitchell off ball at times. Cavs were able to consistently create shots like this in the early going which you'll take 10 times out of 10 pic.twitter.com/DIdOTtf4oq

Mike Zavagno, a staunch Caris LeVert critic during the regular season, has done a 180 on LeVert because he understands the NBA Playoffs are a completely different animal than the regular season, check out his excellent game tape thread. There are reasons to criticize J.B. Bickerstaff’s coaching (prioritizing defense over shooting, the Kevin Love debacle), but starting Caris LeVert is not one of them… in fact, if anything Bickerstaff should be criticized for so easily abandoning it during the regular season instead of letting it cook and build the chemistry necessary to endure the playoff crucible. Here’s to hoping J.B. will find his inner Mike Brown and get this offense going.
Tip off is scheduled for 1:00PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes, and nationally televised on ABC, Go Cavs!
Is Garland done for the night?
foul trouble but i mean watching him play he looks done
Nah.
Whoever wrote (I think CLF) that rebounding has been an issue since Love left and it may come back to bite the cavs was spot on.
Thank you JB for running Love out of town, next time don’t treat a Hall of Fame player like a rookie you bozo
Exactly. You don’t think we could use a big to space the floor? Even if he is shot, at least he can space the floor and hopefully rebound. So stupid by JB for treating him the way he did. JB proving again that he is probably not the guy to take us to the next level.
Cavs shooting 45% from the field while Knicks are at 40% but have 40 attempts to our 35 field goals and are outrebounding us +12 (34-22).
Rebounding is the difference in this game again like Game 1.
Anyone know the rule for an 8 second violation? Does the whole ball have to clear the line or just any part?
Cavs held the Knicks to 24 points while Cavs scored 22… BUT
in the 2nd:
Knicks: 9/28 (32%) FG
Cavs: 6/15 (40%)
Knicks basically had double the amount of field goal attempts as us.. hence why we could only outscore them by 2 points even though the 1st defense was okay.
A miracle the Cavs are only down 9, lets see if they do anything with it.
ISAAC OKORO AGENDA VINDICATED.
Uncanny that JB can’t see how different the game is with him. Even in the game where he played 3 minutes and then sat because Levert went supernova, Ice was impacting the game on both ends. Point of attack defense allows Mobley/Allen to be effective. Attacking the hoop keeps the Knicks on their heels.
If the Knicks get in the bonus, Cavs 100% need to play hack-a-Robinson when he’s in the game.
Got it under 10 points
atleast…
I honestly would consider minutes for Lavar in the 3rd quarter…just to put someone on the court who will compete on the boards physically…
JB should use a timeout to advance the ball here.
This could have been worse…
Spida: 9pts, 4 assists /5 to’s..
Great D
Close strong.
Cavs should consider hack-a Robinson.
Robinson a man amongst boys…heck, Hartenstein a man amongst boys…
Finally a 3 by Okoro.
Caris just lets Mitchell get that rebound for the dunk.. smh.. just standing..
OK. Ice.
Take. The. Open. Shot.
RJ again to the left..
No more of this olay bullshit
Cedi giving good minutes. Finish strong.
Hart has a lot of dumb face.
Looked like a take foul…
Thought so too.
Can’t even rebound a missed ft
exactlyy..Knicks playing harder.. such a shame for this Cavs team on the brink of being down 3-1.
The Cavs have attempted 7 threes in this half… we’re running an offense from 1989
Mitchell chucking.
They need to start shooting when someone has a chance to get an offensive rebound .. since we barely can score at this point.
Good d. Game getting to Cava’ pace.
Chance to close the quarter strong.
Let’s get this to 5-7 to end the quarter.
One possession at a time. Slow down and grind!
Not much going to the hoop, just one on one into defenders and 911 jumpers…
Stop saving the ball under your own basket.
Here’s a list of players who haven’t crapped their pants (regardless of whether they’re playing well or so): Mitchell, Lavert, Cedi. Feel free to edit.
The knicks have 9 more attempts (19 VS our 10) in this quarter.. cant win like that.
Anyone tired of Hart bitching yer?
He’s playing harder than us though.. give me Hart’s effort.
I. Can still hate him.
atleast we get a score on the “goal tending”
Cavs need to play with some pride at this point though.. seriously…
In this 8-0
Defense:
Bad defense Spida/DG dumb foul for a and-1 opportunity
gave up 2 O rebounds on same possession
Gave up O rebound that led 2 brunson 3
On offense:
Caris dribbling to much, forces a jumper he clanks
DM turnover
We need the Australian Mullet! Bring over the mullet!
Put Nick Nurse on speed dial
Like right there – Mobley go get the facking ball, don’t just hope it goes out of bounds! Jeez!
Allen is in quicksand as well. Hardly anyone hustling. Pathetic. Just f’ing pathetic.
So who can we get in the draft?
Nobody? Pacers have our pick
Yeah it was a joke.
sorry im in no mood to joke watching this shite
Mobley nutmegged by a missed shot.
Game over. Series over. Season over. This team is mentally weak.
Mitchell has absolutely had the most brutal turnovers this series…just gifting them baskets of points…
Barf
Another rebound tracked down by Opi while a Cavs player watched that led to a Brunson 3…. EFFORT!!!
Put Mitchell on the bench. He’s trying to do too much.
Stick a fork
Is this team soft? Lazy take perhaps, but it sure feels like it right now.
Absolutely soft. They’ve been soft all year honestly
Yeah, I’ve been quietly thinking the same.
They’re young, which means they’re not hardened yet.
Caris dribbling too much.. just move/pass/cut and get a good open look.
Le chuck.
Still rattled
Another dumb foul by DG… sigh… these games have been so frustrating to watch.
Garbage defense from Mitchell, Mark Jackson is right.
On the early 90’s Cavs teams, they had such a talented scoring and shot-blocking front court but lacked a high-energy forward who could match Horace Grant’s or Rodman’s activity on the boards, and that lack always seems to hold them back from their potential. Both the first and second LeBron era teams had that type of player when they made the Finals (Varejao, TT). Seems like it’s a missing piece again, now.
If neither Mitchell nor DG are going to hit jumpers today, this will be a laugher…
LeVert only guard who’s getting into the paint on a consistent basis.
Thibs baiting him like Ben said. :p
A take that can be easily ignored LMFAO
How was that not a jump ball?
atleast we got the ball. Caris played well..
Lavert and Mitchell are the only 2 players we have who don’t seem rattled.
Mobley has settled down, Okoro looked decent but he never rebounds so he’s unplayable.
Cavs need to play like their season is on the line.. which it is at this point.. I don’t see the urgency/hunger like the Knicks,
If they couldn’t get up for the start of this game, I can’t see them winning the series.
Mitchell and Allen -11, pathetic showing so far.
I hate being a homer but these fouls are ridiculous. Knicks do a little head bob and the whistle blows. Cavs seem to be getting hacked and it’s play on. Between that and still not able to rebound and this is not looking good.
Robinson out there just shoving guys under the bucket
Game 1 loss coming back to haunt us since it seems like we cant win or at least be competitive on the road.
Ricky needs more run here. He was decent and Mobley and Mitchell need a ball mover.
JA with his first rebound. in 12:24 minutes. wow .. while Brunson has 4 rbs, Hart with 2 (in 11/12 min) and Hartenstein with 4 (3 offensive) in 8 min.
I think our main problems are bad offense, bad defense, poor effort, and bad coaching. But other than that we’re golden.
This is getting tiresome, game looks just like Friday. Knicks just making more/better plays than us
