Live Thread: Cavs @ Raptors
2024-01-01Happy New Year, Cavs fans. The wine and gold travel to the great white north tonight to take on a new look Raptors team. Gone are OG Anunoby, Malachai Flynn, and Precious Achiuwa, and in their place step RJ Barrett and Emmanuel Quickley. Personally, I’m betting the Raptors got the best long term player in this group, Quickley. Immanuel is an analytics darling and should see his productivity spike as a starter. Barrett went from untouchable in the Mitchell trade to a trade piece in less than two years. It will be interesting to see how he meshes with Scottie Barnes and Siakam who play similar positions. (Though I’m betting the latter won’t be on this team long).
For Cleveland, Garland, Mobley the Younger, Rubio, and Ty Jerome remain out while Mobley the Elder, and Emoni Bates are in G-League assignment. The Cavs lost a tough one against Milwaukee with wretched shooting, and aren’t favored here, but I’m betting they can do enough here to take down a team that might be a bit in disarray with the new faces. Happy new year and go Cavs.
Now who can the Cavs target with Rubio out? I think we are all set with guards. Need someone 6’8 or bigger.

Geez, thanks god we aren’t these guys. Seeing the wiz really nails home to me not wanting to go back there anytime soon. Maybe this isn’t the team to get back to the promised land, but think they can tinker with it. Certainly, think JB needs to be moved. Don’t see a lot of growth in terms of his game management, unfortunately.

Also re officials and officiating, we seem to get the worst of nba officiating playing against the Craptors. That goes back to last year when Trent Jr. took out Garlands eye.

Barrett drawing a “foul” on Niang at the 5-minute mark (directly following the Raptors’ garbage 5-point play) is one of the worst calls of the season so far. It should have been challenged, but it’s hard to blame JB. You’d have to have 100 challenges to even make a dent in some of these games.
I agree, but if you win that challenge, then you win the game. I don’t know what it is but the officiating has gotten worse the past few years. Maybe it’s due to a lot of inexperienced officials. They should stop trying to legislate every damn play and pin point agregious action.

Missed FTs down the stretch really hurt. Toronto’s big lineup with Poetl, Siakem and Barnes is tough for us without Mobes.

It’s a hard call, but at the end of the day if JB wants him on the floor, offensively he has to be an an aggression-to-the-basket option or setting hard screens. You cannot have him shooting critical perimeter shots.

Giving up 41 in the first quarter played a factor, the Cavs once again get refballed (seems to happen most games) played a factor, JB coaching malpractice leaving Okoro in to clank uncontested threes played a factor, and JB not using any of his challenges played another factor. Too many hurdles in a very winnable game.
I didn’t see any winnable challenges he could’ve gotten, tbh.
