Playoff Preview/Live Thread: Cavs vs. Celtics, Game 2
2015-04-21Ready for another one? After an off-day to enjoy the afterglow of their first playoff victory since 2010, the Cavs return poised and ready to try and turn the home court double play tonight at the Q, as they look to take Game 2 against the Celtics.
In game one, Kyrie, Kevin, Tristan and Delly all got to experience their first taste of playoff action, and they did not disappoint. Kyrie’s offensive explosion and awesome handle, KLove’s gritty defense and rebounding, TT’s dynamite energy and garbageman skills, and Delly’s hustle and heady play were all on full display in the Cavs 113-100 victory. Old head, LBJ, orchestrated the action, facilitating for the young fellas and preaching patience on the sidelines.
Yes, it was an impressive win for this group’s playoff debut, however, this is the playoffs, where nothing is given and everything is earned. Consequently, there’s still plenty for the Cavs to clean up as they take the floor for Game 2.
Boston started strong in Game 1, and the Cavs will need to work on finding a way to put the clamps on them early this time around. The Celtics had a degree of success with Isaiah Thomas running the pick and roll with Kelly Olynyk (as well as generally running amok against the Cavs guards). While Olynyk and even Tyler Zeller were active and hit a lot of shots early, Thomas was the straw that stirred the drink for the guys in green with 22 points and 10 assists.
During the off-day yesterday, it was announced that Thomas finished second in the Sixth Man of the Year voting to “Sweet” Lou Williams of the Raptors, cementing the fact that most teams had trouble staying with this 5’9 waterbug off the bench. Although, if you ask IT himself, he’ll tell you “numbers don’t lie” and the award should have his name on it.
The Cavs own TnT (the “n” is silent) off the bench finished fifth in the voting. Tristan was pure Canadian Dynamite for the Cavs this season on the glass (eight rebounds per game, 14.4 RP48, and fifth in the NBA at 3.3 offensive rebounds per game), but voters typically show a propensity for giving consideration to more of the instant offense types as 6MOY.
The Cavs will also need to work on taking better care of the ball, as they got a bit sloppy in the second half of Game 1. After giving up the rock just four times in the first half, the Cavs turned it over twice as much in the second as the Celtics turned up their defensive intensity and got back to their ball-hawking ways (with five more steals) to claw their way back into the game late. Smart money is on Boston going back to that well in Game 2 with gusto.
The Celtics are also saying all the right things coming into this one, vowing to execute any bit of insight Brad Stevens can find and exploit on the reels of game film he’s likely devoured since Sunday. Coach Bradley Kent (shouldn’t this guy have a cool nickname by now like “The Thinker” “The Prodigy” or “Zapruder” — feel free to spitball this in the comments and I’ll buy a C:tB t-shirt for whoever comes up with the best one) might also have some extra motivation after finishing a distant fourth in the Coach of the Year Award voting behind Mike Budenholzer, Steve Kerr and Jason Kidd.
(Cheer up though Brad, at least you got some votes unlike our own David Blatt who received just three third place votes.)
The Celtics also are still playing with house money since many expected them to be gambling in the lottery this off-season instead of rolling the dice in the post-season. And since they went on a hot streak to get here who knows… maybe the Clovers think they’ll have a bit of luck on their side for Game 2.
Although, we all know what can happen when you feel lucky…
Count me in the camp that believes in a Cavs sweep for Round 1, especially since they have LeBron James the greatest player of all time (wanna fight about it?). While this game may be close early, I think the Cavs pull away and win by a comfortable margin.
Prediction: Cavs 114, Celtics 94.
Chime in and give your two cents on Game 2…
LeBron looks like he put a lot of that weight back that he lost.
These refs are awesome!
I don’t like the way they finished that quarter. They have to put them away.
The Celtics ran a double screen for Thomas and he got a decent shot. The Cavs should try the same with Kyrie. Run some good offense, all this one will get Kyrie tired in 2 rounds.
One on one* I meant.
What a waste of having Boston in the penalty early… smh
I agree. Should’ve capitalize on that more.
JR’s gotta find his shot tho, everyone else needs to be driving
No buzzer magic that time…
Ugly jump shooting end to a great quarter
horrific end to quarter where Cavs are unaware they re in the bonus and are heaving 3 pointers like nobodies business and of course not making them….game just a little too close right now
Cold end of the quarter but solid defense
Too many jump shots…
Kyrie looked gassed there. Probably could have used a rest with two minutes left and put LBJ back in.
Anybody else bothered by the “All In” shirts? All it makes me think of is when they signed Shaq and Gilbert said the Cavs were all in for the 2009-10 season. Which didn’t turn out so well.
I wondered something similar when my wife reminded me we watched the series together way back in the day. It was like she was begging me to not mention it.
Refs are really taking a long time to call charges this series…
Looked like the ref that was furthest from the action signaled charge first
Yeesh. They should just end this series now. TKO
It’s good to see you my friend. This is your kind of paced game.
TT just EARNING that contract…
I am surprised that the camera hasn’t panned to Gilbert in the owners box.
He probably gave them specific instructions not to do so until they win the Finals…
JR really locked in on everything but the shot tonight. Only 1-6 from 3, but definitely good JR.
It’s remarkable how similar this game is to Game1
James freaking jones taking a charge.
So we are killing them inside and take a big lead, then quickly starting bombing from 3 to let them crawl back in it.
After we got into the bonus at the 8 minute mark, no less
James FREAKING Jones with the charge.
We were typing at the same time. Great minds think alike.
cavs shooting too many 3s drive to hoop you are in the bonus guys
Kyrie needs to drive and get some fouls calls.
Offensive foul on Swedish Larry Bird…
I hate being 30 seconds behind… computer lags are stupid…
I had to ditch the app for that reason.
I’m on the TNT site via my DirecTv and it’s still slow…
I see we are killing them. Cavs look bored.
nope the celtics were outplaying them and then Cavs turned it on mid 3rd qtr game still in single digits…not killing them
Even though Kevin got the foul call on him I like that he is competing hard.
I think he was hoping the refs bailed him out. They did evemtually and turners body language helped.
Don’t let up Cavs! Step on their throats!
Love working down low. You could tell eventually the call would come though.
Wow Turner just threw himself into Love.
Gotta love Love with 2 blocks, before a foul on the third try.
LOVE PLAYIN STONE WALL DEFENSE!!!!!!
Beautiful ball movement!
This is some kind of run. So fun.

Where is cols? I bet he is on fear the sword.
Sully was due for a miss…
there we go into double digits not sweep the leg!!!
great ball bein played right now
Bonus with 7:49 left? That’s awesome!!
I think we are all on varying lags as we watch this game… LOL
Yea it definitely seems that way……lol
Bostons strategy: Foul the crap out of the CAVS.
Gotta be disheartening for Boston to be down after playing so well
Good point. I agree.
Let’s pontificate how awesome Andy will look next to Mozgov next year.
You mean TT as they come off the bench?
Yep. It will be brutal on teams in the second half. No way Andy takes love’s starting role.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED!!!!!!!!
Love finally on the receiving end of a TD pass!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!??!?!?!!
KEVIN LOVE HALF-COURT REVERSE ALLEY-OOP FLUSH!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
My 4 year old said love with the slam mommy. She said the cavs and reverse slam??? He said you have to see it to believe it.
also another game where the officials are brutal and not consistent on either end
Yeah baby! The crowd still oohing and aahing at the second or third replay of the LeBron-to-Love half-court alley-oop reverse dunk.
That was a sick jam KLOVE!
HOLY COW!! That’s the HIGHEST I’ve EVER SEEN LOVE JUMP!!!!
Kevin Love going JR on them!!!!!! Wooohooo!!
Whoa!! Kevin Love!
Way to be there MOZ!!
this more like it CAVS!!
YOOOOOOOOOOOOO LOVE REVERSE OOPPPPP!!!!!
Wow! What’s wrong with these refs!!
How is that a foul on Moz? He was just getting position?
I like the game plan so far in the second half…
Good move by Love. Cavs have many options to not use them wisely.
