Preview/Live Thread: Cavs vs. Thunder (#CaughtOffGuard)
2015-12-17Not yet, Cavs fans… not quite yet. Just in case you haven’t seen Kyrie Irving’s tweet from yesterday, refuting the early report that he’d be suiting up (in something other than other than his swank designer duds on the sideline) for tonight’s eagerly anticipated contest against the Oklahoma City Thunder, be advised that KI will be a spectator for at least one more game. His return is tantalizingly close, and not just to the fans, but also to Uncle Drew himself, who has reportedly continued to lobby the Cavs’ front office and coaches to allow him to return to active duty. Understandably, there’s a bit of a letdown on all fronts about this delay, especially as the Thunder come to town representing maybe the toughest test of this still young season for the Cavaliers. Not to mention the fact that his presence could have buoyed a suddenly paper thin Cleveland back court.
Also sitting this one out for the wine & gold is the recently returned Iman Shumpert. Shump was officially ruled out after suffering a groin injury in only his second game back from his season-long absence with a wrist injury. The new issue is reportedly a mild one, but the Cavs likely want to take no chances that it could get exacerbated. Iman is listed as day-to-day, although even if he didn’t have this latest malady to deal with, he might still not have been available to the team tonight… especially after other amazing events unfolded in his life today…
Congratulations to Iman and Teyana as they welcome baby Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr. into the world! (This is also the first female progeny I’ve ever heard of being named a Junior).
So, Kyrie and Shump are out, but hey, you might say… the Cavs have gone 14-7 without their starting back court so far, so why worry? Well… there’s more…
Mo Williams is also listed as questionable for this game with a right thumb sprain he sustained in the Celtics game. Odds are that Mo will give it a go, but given his near non-existent defense on most nights, the thumb will likely impact what he can do on the side of the court where he does most of his damage. Also, Matthew Dellavedova may be downplaying some injury issues as he was on the trainer’s table getting his back stretched after the Boston game. Delly also missed a practice while the team was in Orlando due to the sore back.
If you’re counting along at home, that’s two guards out and two more banged up, which leaves the Cavs perilously thin with only J.R. Smith and Jared Cunningham fully healthy to man the backcourt, and try and stop the dangerous Russell Westbrook. At least help is on the way…
Cavs recall Joe Harris from Canton. Charge currently in Calif. Cavs also announce G Iman Shumpert (groin) out tonight, questionable Sunday.

But seriously… Westbrook would present a daunting challenge to the Cavs’ guards even if everyone was healthy. And, since LeBron is likely to have his hands full matching up with Kevin Durant, the Cavs may need some additional minutes at guard from Richard Jefferson as well.
The Thunder (17-8) come in on a six game winning streak, where they’ve held their opponents under 100 points in every game. They are on the second night of a back-to-back, however, and have not fared well on the road against Eastern Conference teams thus far this season, going just 1-3. They are paced by Durant (third in the league in scoring at 27.3) and Westbrook (sixth at 25.6 with three triple doubles already this season) offensively, and feature big man and defensive specialist, Serge Ibaka (seven boards and 2.5 blocks per game).
This game also represents the first “homecoming” for former Cav, Dion Waiters. St. Weirdo has been his usual mercurial self for the Thunder, coming off the bench to average 10.8 ppg, while shooting 40% (36% from three point range). Dion’s been shooting it well of late, however, and had one of his better games of the season with 18 points on 6-10 shooting last night against Portland. It’s probably safe to assume he’s had tonight’s game circled on his calendar for some time now, as if the Cavs’ already thin guard rotation needed more on their plate…
The Cavs (16-7) have been on a modest three game win streak of their own, and have held their last two opponents to 76 and 77 points respectively. Cleveland’s front court will need to shine tonight to compensate for their back court deficit. It will be key for LeBron, Kevin Love, Timofey Mozgov and Tristan Thompson to come up big, and make the Thunder work hard on defense. Hopefully, Moz can continue his recent resurgence in the middle, and take advantage of Enes Kanter and Stephen Adams.
The probable starting lineups are… for the Cavaliers: C Timofey Mozgov; PF Kevin Love; SF LeBron James; SG J.R. Smith; PG Matthew Dellavedova. And for the Thunder: C Steven Adams; PF Serge Ibaka; SF Kevin Durant; SG Andre Roberson; PG Russell Westbrook.
Game time is 8 p.m. (EST) and it will be nationally televised on TNT.
This is likely to be a tough test for the Cavs, but even with their depleted guard situation, I still think the wine & gold will be able to defend their home turf against the potentially weary Thunder. Cavs win a close one 107-104…
GO CAVS!
Don’t know why LBJ wasn’t trying to grab the ball from TT…
James didn’t want to shoot free throws either
Wow. Westbrook is kicking TT and hanging onto his leg and they don’t call a foul.
Damn TT, what the…….
Oh man, that was the game right there!
Big mistake there… game should be over…
Should the Cavs’ foul to prevent the 3????
Big stop coming up..
Big turnover to follow…barf.
LETS GO CAVS!
This time Lebron misses that shot, but still will take him being aggressive going towards the basket. Gotta get stops
NO THREES.
Team seems a little shook up after Jason Days wife got stretchered out.
Jason Day and wife:

Come on defense! Dig deep in the Q
TT took way too much to shoot there.
I mean, he got the ball with .8 seconds to shoot…
He should only need .7 EG…
That’s LeBron’s fault can’t leave Jefferson with a short shot clock. In the corner.
In these key moments, Lebron waits too long to initiate the play
True… but Jefferson should have shot it too…
Cavs need one more big stop….
And couple more buckets
C’mon guys… gotta take the shot…
At this point one year ago, Love would be discouraged by his lack of touches in the second half… This year he understands his role and stays ready and cans a pressure 3
HUGE SHOT from KLOVE whooi
Big 3 from love come on cavs
Love with a YUUUGE 3. But Westbrook answers.
Big Big shot by Love.
KEVIN LOVE!!!
We need to score
bad turnovers these pass few posessions
LBJ kinda got away with one there… oh, it was tipped…
You mean allegedly “tipped”???
That’s Jason Day’s wife that was hit!!!
That sucks…
That dunk by Ibaka was too easy…
One nitpick, LBJ missed Westbrook guarding Love on the offensive possession @ 4 minutes. Shot a 3 instead of directing Love to post Westbrook up. May have not been enough time on the shot clock though.
Saw that and wanted that as well. Oh well
Taking her out on a stretcher board…
Dang that’s a bummer. Hope it’s not too serious.
Man I sincerely hope she’s ok
Can we hold on for 3:07?
28 assists tonight fellas..
The majority in the second half too…
Oh my. That’s a scary LeBron-fan collision.
Hope that woman is okay…
Bron landed on her pretty hard…
Side of his hip directly to her head
Price you pay to sit there
Still… pretty scary…
Didnt see the stretcher…my bad. HOpe she is okay
Imagine there was more impact when she hit the ground, she just got crushed
TT doing a MUCH better job this half…
Getting those offensive boards!
Did Marv just call love Dellavadova?
CAN WE GIVE DELLY HIS HUGE CONTRACT EXTENSION NOW
When the Thunder get into crunch time, they really just ISO Durant or Westbrook whereas we have gotten even more into the flow of our offense to build our lead: Jefferson 13, TT 12, Delly 11, MDN 7
That’s the edge I’m talking about on the other thread. That we’re much more fluid offensively than OKC. Despite KD and Russ being the best 1-2 punch this year.
What other thread?
The previous one. I think I replied it to you actually
WIN OR LOSE TONIGHT TOTAL TEAM EFFORT —-CLF HOPE MY PREDICTION COMES UP ” REVERSE FASHION “
I’ll take that NOMAD!
Agree Nomad – I can handle a loss if they play this way. This effort + our missing players = winning the second season.
Delly just 5 boards shy of a triple double… ;)
11 pts… 10 assists…
How is that a foul on Cunningham? The Thunder are clueless on how to defend the pick n roll.
Dion is having one heck of a return and is playing great for the cavs:)
EG I don’t remember what we bet on about Toronto but they lost to an inferior team again. You may have been onto something.
I think if they finish in top 4, I owe you a C:tB shirt and if they don’t, you just have to say that I was right… ;)
Oh hey Lebron with 10 assists to go with his 30.. Still the best scorer+passer ever. ;)
100th Delly-TT lob
Tristan owes Delly nearly every point he scores
They are like clockwork on thay pick and oop move.
If Tristan could shoot free throws it would be even scarier for defenses
That throwdown by TT was almost superhuman…
Love it. I think TT-Delly 2nd unit when Kyrie is healthy will be huge for the Cavs.
Good time to fine Lebron a few breather
I mean find. Stupid typo
Lebron getting aggressive on the offensive end, strong move to the hoop followed by a strong jumper over Westbrook
LBJ is FEELING IT…
Our bench is coming up big tonight
Roberson travelled before that three…
I think the refs are using up every call for the cavs tonight
Steven Adams has GOT to be one of the ugliest players in the league, just saying
Throw Kanter in that discussion too
Don’t forget Noah
Yeah, Adams fashioned his whole look after Pebbles…
He’s a triple threat. Terrible hairl, mustache, and tattoos. You have to pick two dude… All three are a disaster.
Ninja 3 gotta love it. Thunder unraveling
Ninja draws the foul!
Ninja steal and trey! 10-point lead.
MUCH DANGER NINJA!!!
Refs must have been saving up some calls to give Cavs in the fourth… ;)
Jefferson with some nice contributions tonight
RJ coming up big this quarter…
I guess benching Love was to match the Thunder small line up.
GO CRAZY AT THE “Q”
TV63 is at this one… bet she’s going crazy…
I’m impressed by RJs hops lol
I’m liking this lineup
Nice coaching move to keep LBJ and Love on the floor to start the quarter with Durant and Westbrook sitting.
Finally we broke through and got the lead, gonna be a fun ride this 4th quarter with you all!!
Jefferson turns back the clock!
Shoulda kept clip going to see Love go over to Johnny Football’s seats for some dap……
Sorry… I’m just reposting them as they come…
LMAO, Love threw the TD and then went to Manziel
Make up call?
