Live Thread: Cavs vs. Suns (#CloudyWithAChanceOfTempo)
2016-01-27[Editor’s Note: It was a busy content day here at C:tB, and even though there’s a game tonight, make sure you check out both Robert’s Point Four-ward and David’s Wood Shop article… they are excellent!]
If someone had bet me that Phoenix Suns Head Coach, Jeff Hornacek, would have outlasted David Blatt as an employed NBA coach this season… I would have lost a lot of money. Despite his seat being hotter than the surface of the actual sun, with a disappointing team featuring players in open revolt and a torrential downpour of injuries, Hornacek still wears a suit and holds a clipboard while Blatt now gets paid to not show up for work. Or maybe he’s just sitting on a beach with Hans, earning 20 percent. In any event, it’s not my intention to rain on the Cavs’ Ty Lue parade (or sprint drills as the case may be), but only to point out how suddenly the storms of discontent can roll in and cast an unexpected shadow on an organization.
The good news is that the Suns are still sinking in the West, and a Cavs victory should be a little easier to predict given the disarray and tired legs of their opponent (Phoenix lost the front end of a back-to-back last night against the equally miserable Sixers). They have fallen to 14-32, and have lost their last 11 road games in a row. The injury bug has fairly decimated their back court, with Eric Bledsoe out for the season and Brandon Knight ailing, although backup, Archie Goodwin, has had three straight 20+ point games in their stead. Phoenix also features two buzzed about potential trade targets for the Cavs in towel-throwing problem child, Markieff Morris, and misused big man, Tyson Chandler.
Despite the recent cloud cover for the Cavs, there was a bit of blue sky that peeked through in Monday’s win against the T-Wolves, as the team secured the first victory of the Ty Lue era. They seemed a little less winded from the up-tempo style that Lue is incorporating, and their shooting cold front thawed out a bit. Since the Suns like to run the ball a lot themselves (they average 100.7 possessions per 48 minutes, good for fourth in the league), the Cavs should get lots of practice getting up and down the court. The real question is whether they can weather the Suns attack and make some defensive adjustments and improvements, although they might have a little help from former Sun, Mike Longabardi, who was officially hired as the Cavs’ Defensive Coordinator today.
The Cavs beat the Suns when they squared off in Phoenix, eclipsing them 101-97 with a scorching fourth quarter performance from Kyrie Irving (including a dagger three with 22 seconds left). That game also marked the debut of Tristan Thompson in the starting lineup, a move that will be replicated for tonight’s contest.
Probable starting lineup for the Cavs is: Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson. And, for the Suns: Archie Goodwin, Devin Booker, P.J. Tucker, Alex Len and Tyson Chandler.
The game starts at 7pm (EST) and can be seen on FSO, or heard on WTAM 1100.
Forecast: Cavs brighten their outlook without letting the Suns shine, and win 117-105.
Also… keep an eye on LeBron James, as he could be just the 17th player in NBA history to reach the 26K plateau if he can rain down 36 points tonight.
And about the coach getting canned…fans and even NBA coaches seem to think this is different than Europe or than the NBA used to be. That Blatt’s situation was somehow special…he was a TITLE winning coach in Europe, so much less likely to be fired, but European league coaches come and go just as quickly. And as for the NBA being worse, does Carlisle remember who he got his job from in the first place? A perennial playoff coach with a great record. I know it’s been said before but goodness this shouldn’t have been that shocking.
Cavs look better. It’s tough to dispute that. 30+ assists is not a number they were approaching with ease in the last month. They looked really gassed at the end of Bulls and Timberwolves games…probably would have tonight as well if they had to keep starters in during the 4th. Better shape can only help them play defense better. I’m definitely intrigued
I am always an optimist about Cleveland teams, and that is how I saw the coaching change. So far, I don’t see any reason to think I am wrong about Lue. The players are making a nice step forward each game, into a system that should be much more powerful. This coming weekend will be a big test that I wish was about two weeks later.
Yeah, but even if we lose, we cannot read too much into it considering this transition. As long as they show effort, and do not regress too much into bad habits I will be satisfied. Preferably they win, but I would be pleased if they just are competitive.
Yea, I’ve been really negative on this site for the last two weeks. I apologize for projecting my frustrations onto this thread. I just hated the way things went down with Blatt and how he was treated during his entire tenure, by the players, front office, and most of all the media. And I think what transpired with him does not reflect well on the organization and its players. And I think this one hundred percent matters. You can turn the other way all you want, but these kinds of dealings matter. They have a very deep effect on everything… Read more »
Very well said and written. I could say the same thing about myself, but not as eloquently.
Yeah, pretty much this.
Same here. But I don’t think this Suns victory proves anything (other than we can beat the Suns).
I’m hoping for some real improvement after the all-star break. Even then, there’s probably nothing doing against Golden State… (oh no, here I go again….)
Well, we’re almost definitely going to be in the finals. There’s something to be said for that. It’s just seven games, and theoretically anything can happen.
Stuff happens, even in the so called best organizations. Like a guy I always thought was a douchebag for this sleazy firing…. Back in 1994-95 Bob Hill led the Spurs to a 62-20 record with D. Robinson. They went 59-23 in his 2nd year. The following year they started 3-15 when star players Robinson and Sean Elliot were injured, and the GM fired Hill and replaced him with…….himself. Needless to say they only won 20 games total that year, lucked into Tim Duncan. For the next 5 years the coach couldn’t reach the 59 wins that Hill got in BOTH… Read more »
Wow! That is interesting. Do you think he did it so he could tank and get Duncan?
Of course he did and he he got a lot of heat from the media both for tanking and for taking Hill’s place. Boston had the highest chance of the no1 to get Tim Duncan, but wound up getting Antoine Walker instead. This tells you how random success can be. Popovich could go from being considered one of the top 3 coaches ever to getting fired within 2 seasons.
“Tyronn Lue was named the All-Star coach for the East, after coaching just 3 games in the NBA. His counterpart in the West, Gregg Popovich, is coaching his 1,538th game tonight.” -espn
Well I mostly like what I saw this game. Ball movement and just as importantly off ball player movement was excellent. Guys were moving again with purpose which opened up passing lanes instead of running through the motions ambling around in the half court. Think that was part of this team’s problem under Blatt. Guys just kind of jogged around when they cut or set screens instead of cutting and coming off screens with quickness. Suns coughed it up a ton with poor decisions and generally are terrible in both halfcourt and transition d. They are lazy at closing out… Read more »
Keepin’ with the “little by little” mantra.
REAL GM LIST T.T. / LOVE IN THE TOP TEN OF THE LEAST ( WORST ) TRADEABLE CONTRACTS —YOUR THOUGHTS ……?
Agree on the TT contract, but not Love. They would be takers next year with the higher cap.
That’s silly. So. Many teams would take love in a heartbeat.
Dead wrong on Love….he actually has a super tradeable contract. Correct on TT.
KI only 3 assists in21 mins. Delly shot poor, but had 7 assists in just 19. KI has to distribute more
O.K EVIL DID MARKIEFF HAVE A GOOD ENOUGH “AUDITION” TO PURSUE HIM AT THE RIGHT PRICE ?
I’m still not even sure “Free” would be the right price. I just don’t think we are stable enough as an organization right now to take on Morris…
Not even close… ;)
Turn to espn to see Chauncey Billups in the ugliest suit ever.
CAMPY WITH THE ” FAUX PAX ” MAKING STATEMENT —” COACH BLATT “—-NO PROBLEM CAMPY ALL IS GOOD WITH A WIN TONIGHT !!
Was I right or naw? Say naw cuz you never read my words.
JR might be my MVP for January.
I told you he was an important Cav…
Much better defense in second half… Suns were probably tired, but Cavs took care of biz and got Bron and starters some rest…
42 points off da bench, das a good look, lets hope this production continues
LeBron 21 pts on 7 shots… now THAT is the ultra-efficient ‘Bron we’ve been missing…
Edit: 8 shots… darn you ESPN gamecast.
he airballed that 3 at the end?
Yup. Sucks if you had the under.
Over I meant, obviously.
At the Lizard and every time Varejao makes a play, I say, “Andeeee!” in the aunt Bea voice. Also the pretenders are on and the beer is delicious. Life is good.
Color me green with envy!
Next time you’re in Cleveland, brother.
Maybe for the playoffs this summer…
No reason not to play RJ and Andy more often…
RJ coming up big tonight after not playing these past few games. Andy with the tip in!
All-star break will be huge for this team. Especially for KI to get his legs back, and get some serious practice time with the team.
After the All-Star break is when Lebron’s season truly begins.
First half wasn’t great, 2nd half they did what they were expected to do. At least they got two warmup games to prepare for real teams.
Cavs were in a no win situation tonight. Blow them out and they were supposed to, lose or win a close game to a tired and terrible team and we would have raked em over the coals. But they did what they were supposed to do and dominated the 2nd half. Good prep for this weekend.
Just a little too tall for the Ninja…
Moondog sitting in the front row…
James (31) the only Cavs player with more than 30 min tonight. Excellent.
Been a long time since we heard the Godfather theme…
Wonder if they have the theme from Sanford and Son loaded up for Mo midrange bricks…
If they don’t… they should…
Lol…nice……
Lol, always thought this was a great theme song. Also used very well in the movie Hancock as well.
