Live Thread: Cavs vs. Warriors (#SilverLinings)
2018-01-15Just when you thought it was safe to watch a Cavs game again… along comes the annual MLK matchup with the Golden State Warriors. Who could forget the last two occasions? Last season, the defending Champs got housed by 35 in an embarrassing loss in the Bay Area… yet, it didn’t seem quite as horrific as the MLK Massacre of 2016 that ultimately cost David Blatt his job. Still, losing by a combined 69 points on this particular holiday has inspired more nightmares than dreams for the Cavaliers and their faithful.
If that wasn’t depressing enough, this year’s tilt comes on the heels of one of the roughest rough patches the wine & gold has experienced in the LeBron 2.0 era. The Cavs have lost three straight (in spectacular fashion), five of their last seven and eight of their last 11. They’ve looked out of sync on offense, and almost non-existent on defense, struggling to work out their rotations on both ends of the floor. Ty Lue doesn’t seem to have answers, outside of the cryptic “agenda” narrative. LeBron seems at a loss. Even the ever positive Isaiah Thomas is a bit down… calling his first two decent games “fools gold” after going just 5-26 from the field in his last two games.
Okay… enough of the bad news. The good news is that the Cavs are returning home to the Q, where they still own a 13 game winning streak (easy enough to forget with 17 of the last 20 days spent on the road). Cleveland is 15-4 at home, third best record in the NBA, and LeBron is averaging nearly a triple double in games at the Q this season (29.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg and 9.9 apg). Yes, they’re facing a fully healthy Warriors team (Steph Curry missed the Christmas Day game at their place), which has been on a tear since Curry returned, winning 12 straight on the road. However, there’s something to be said for having your collective back against the wall… especially against a team you are desperate to beat.
The recipe for disaster is there for sure, and there’s every reason to believe this could be another crushing MLK blowout given how good the Dubs have been and how bad the Cavs have been lately. Yet, the Cavs have rarely done the expected thing this season… and pulling out a win against the defending Champs would be just the kind of weird end to this rough patch that nobody would see coming.
Prediction: The Cavs clear away the dark clouds and find a silver lining amongst the Golden onslaught… taking a close one 110-108.
Again, I have no idea if this will come to pass… although the last three games I covered (Bulls, Blazers, Magic) just happened to be the three games the Cavs won during this 11 game stretch… so there’s another silver lining.
Catch all the action starting at 8pm EST on TNT… and, as always… chime in here!
Cavs guards gotta start boxing out to keep the Warriors guards from pinching in on the o-boards. Also, an outlet pass to keep them honest would be nice.
How many dumb daum passes have we done??? Honestly, you can’t do this against this team
We need to play as close to perfection in order to win against them. I thought that was already well known by our team.
Green shoulda hammered Curry there…
Bwahahaha. That curry pass gave me deja vu from game 7
same – love that pass
Great recognition… great movement!
Interesting steal from JR to Curry.
Will always get a warm feeling from a Curry behind-the-back turnover.
Me too.
Nod a bad foul by love with as much as Iggy struggles at the line.
I LOVE it when Steph does that behind the back to NOBODY pass…
Such a fond memory.
JR finally got us a basket in 2 nd
Warriors ice cold from outside.

Why Why Crowder?? Do something. You are a big dude for cryin out loud
Anytime JR drives, he is not looking for his shot at all. Indecision led to a wide open Curry 3 (even though Curry missed it)
Cavs defending better this quarter…. outside of a couple of Curry shots
Wade so much better when he’s not a primary ballhandler.
jr got top get the hell outa here
He’s ‘facilitating’….
Love the no hesitation baseline drive by Wade. Get the ball make a decision and go.
About 3 boneheaded plays by JR
ANother lazy pass JR!! What is he doing for us?
JR passed up a 3 and a bunny to make a bad pass.
Kev with the floorburns!
Think LeBron wants this?
Vintage Wade!!!
Flash Back?
WOW Look at Kevin Love fight!!!
The Block ,
F’ing incredible!
That’s THREE on Curry…
We struggle closing off the o boards against this team. They are long long long

CHeap a$$ foul tripping IT from Curry
These offensive rebounds are absolutely maddening…
BLOCKED!!
Just can’t give this team second chances…
What a damn shame. All because Love couldn’t keep rebound
Gotta secure that Kev…

James headed for 40 tonight? He is sure not in chill mode
2days off helped a lot .
GREAT PASS TO LEBRON! Three great looks in the right side pick-and-roll.
I will say IT is much better at throwing oops than Ky, or at least he tries. He really does go much more downhill than Irving ever did.

Nice plays by IT.
OK, a couple nice looks by IT.
IT facilitating which is great to see
IT now playing well
That lob is getting NICE!
He should do that with Lebron, TT, and Green all the time.
So we let Curry get what he wants…??
Gotta knock him down. That was way too comfortable.
Anyone know a way to mute the game and put Jim Chones on?
Nice fake IT!
anyone notice how much better korvers d on klay over jr??
He’s been good tonight….
True, but JR very near league worst this season for his position…at least Korver is in the right spots and doesn’t play like a bonehead…
A jump shot never gets old but you do Weber
He may be the worst color analyst in the business. Would prefer Jackson and van gundy.
LeJumper. Should be fresh. Got a nice break there.
There you go IT!
Is Kerr just giving the rooks experience by guarding LeBron?
Why show your true capabilities in the regular season?
I bet it’s more of an ego thing with Kerr
“For more on Draymond…” Oh lord…
Hey, Draymond, I know something you can self-evaluate.
Good sell on the push by KK…
The good news is that the game seems to be at the Cavs’ pace.
2nd unit as good as they can with tt involved, dont u miss those days with frye in his place!!!!
Yes. Yes I do.
IT is breaking their defense well but Wade is not a shooter and he is not even looking to shoot the 3.
Couple thoughts:
1) Wade has enough in the tank to still be a really good player for us in the playoffs when he is actually giving 100%
2) IT’s jumper will come as he shakes the rust off, but he is getting into the paint whenever he wants (good sign for the hip – we were all worried about quickness, agility, etc)
I didn’t get to watch first q but I think he may have issues finishing inside against this team.
Got that right…he’ll be a turnover machine driving into the paint against this team…
Except when he gets off oops to LBJ…
He has finished a few, missed a few as well. Has also set up Love for a 3 and gotten a couple nice lobs to LeBron. Drive + kick or drive + cut
That commercial is Cavs fans… Screaming inside glass room
I never thought I’d be saying this, but the second unit needs to find a way to get the ball to Jeff Green.
you’re not wrong

I haven’t seen an Isaiah Thomas drive to the basket that broken down defenses and made him an all-star last 2 years. (Except for that one he had on his first game back). That was a critical skill that Kyrie had that we profited so much against GS.
tt and jr 2 worst players on the team but clueless still gives them good minutes , pathetic ! this is a winnable game with a few basic lineup moves
Cavs playing decent but missing out on 50/50 balls. Also, the longer Wade holds the ball, the worse we all know he’ll be.
With his shot rusty… IT’s best feature would be to push the pace and find open shooters…
