Live Thread: Bulls @ Cavs
2023-02-11Good evening CtB!
The Cavs welcome the Chicago Bulls to the shores of Lake Erie for a classic Central Division showdown. The Cavs are attempting to extend their win streak to six games, second best in the Association to the Milwaukee Bucks. To do so, they will have to beat a perfectly mediocre Bulls team wallowing at the bottom of the play-in standings. The bigger question for the Cavs is how dead are those legs after last night in New Orleans? Also, does J.B. Bickerstaff decide to go eight-deep or will Raul Neto, Lamar Stevens, or dare I say Kevin Love make an appearance? #FREENETO #FREELOVE
Interestingly, the stats on the Bulls tell a different story than what one might think about this current version of the Bulls. In spite of the “offense-only” guys such as DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine grabbing the headlines for the Bulls, they are actually winning with a top 10 defense and a bottom 10 offense. They don’t move the ball that well and they don’t crash the glass. It’ll be interesting to see how the Cavs cover DDR and Zach, do they just stay home and make them shoot or do they flash a double and force a pass?
Tip off is scheduled for 8:00PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes, Go Cavs!
Zion is gonna miss “weeks” after the all-star break, according to David Griffin. Pels gonna continue to tread water, at best.
KAT continues to be out indefinitely for Minny.
Good news for GSW and the Lakers. And OKC. I think those 3 make the play in with Minny, NO, Portland, and Utah in the running for #10.
ALOT DOES DEPEND ON HOW HIS KNEES RESPOND CAN SEE JB PICK AND CHOOSE WHEN TO INSERT HIM WHICH GROUP MAKES THE MOST SENSES IF HE CAN COME BACK CLOSE TO FORM HE CAN BE AN “ INDIVIDUAL CAVALANCHE “ I AM GOING TO LOOK AT THE OPTIMISTIC SIDE 👍😀
I have no expectations for Green. Almost 36 and coming off an ACL. Worth a flyer I guess but I can’t imagine him getting any actual minutes.
He has played 3 games this year. It is gonna take a bit to get himself back into it. Rubio still is not there and he is months ahead of Green.
I think it is a low risk flier with an eye towards next year.
Our first game after the Green signing is San Antonio. Kind of cool for Green.
Again, I am not terribly optimistic he can provide LeVert/Wade/Llama-level defense. Okoro is out of the question. Cedi level?
Even if he can, it probably won’t show right away, coming off that knee injury in the POs last year.
Green is a career 39% 3-point shooter
40% if you round up 39.9%.
THAT MAKES A WHOLE LOT OF SENSE JASON GOONG TO BE BETTER THAN ANY 2ND ROUND PICK / ALSO GIVES HIM MORE TOME TO REHAB THE LEG AND GET MORE FAMILIAR WITH COACHES AND PLAYERS / GREAT LOCKERROOM GUY / LEADERSHIP TO HELP GUIDE THE YOUNGSTERS/ FIT GREAT WITH THIS CURRENT CAVS CULTURE/ I WOULD THEN AFTER HIS PLAYING DAYS OFFER HIM A POSITION WITH THE CAVS A HIGH PRICED SHOOTING COACH
Plus we pick Bronny in the ’24 draft and then…..
If Green plays well this year, I do not think another year or two would necessarily be out of order. He is not worth the full MLE ($11 million).
We do have a $3.9 mil trade exception from the Mitchell trade we could use to get above vet min. A 2nd round pick around #40 is no guarantee to make the squad, and the FA class is pretty weak. Green until we have a 1st in ’24 is not crazy. And for the rest of this year makes all kinds of sense.
I don’t know what Green has left after the knee injury. At worst, tons of championship experience and basketball nous and a still decent (38% last year) 3 PT stroke. His knee & his D are the questions. He is no longer a lockdown wing defender, but still passable to good would be fantastic.
Plus, maybe he can teach Ice, Wade, LeVert, Osman, Stevens, and Windler some tricks.
CMON DANNY COME HOME “ TO THE LAND “👍👍

Meaning win 19 games ? Right now we are about 10 games up from 10th place.
Magic number = combined wins for you + losses for team chasing you.
We’ll start it running:
Playoffs: 19 (Knicks)
Home court: 23 (Nets)
The team in 5th/7th could obviously change. Knicks play the Nets tomorrow.

On less than 1.5 attemps per. 30.5% for his career. He has decent size and plays hard. But seems redundant with Llama.

Bring Danny Green home for the championship run
Green shot 38% from deep last year in 62 starts with Philly.
We now have a 2.5 game lead over the Nets
Only 1 in the loss column.
Buyout/waiver updates.
Terrence Ross (ORL) to Mavs. Oops, Suns! Woj 1st report wrong.
Reggie Jackson (CHA) to Nuggets. Reportedly.
Green just got bought out/waived. Us, Celts, and LA interested.
Agree with Raoul, sit Windler till after the ASB if he is at all iffy.
For Love, it would depend on his health. If his back/thunb are still hurting him, then more rest. If not, then I think he should be out there. Last night, the bench made 1 shot. ONE! If a healthy Love cannot play in that game, when can he?
At worst I’d want him to get some PT for special situations. If a game gets to foul mode, he is a top 5 foul shooter (Garland, Mitchell, Love, Rubio, Neto). And in an end-of game, must score situation (especially down 3), I’d still want him out there. Garland & Mitchell are the only two I’d want over him for a deep jumper for the win/tie. Mobley/Allen closer in would be preferable.
Mavs lost last night in OT to Sacramento.
Awwwwwww shucks…
The flat earther only had 7 points. Trade demand incoming.
He actually had 28 points. But they lost.
honeymoon went fast
LET’S TAKE THIS WIN STREAK ALL THE WAY TO ALL STAR BREAK——–I WOULD SIT ” QUESTIONABLE ” WIMDLER/// KLOVE UNTIL AFTER ALL STAR BREAK—-KLOVE MAYBE EVEN LONGER ——————ANYONE HEAR OF ANY ‘SCOOP ” OF CAVS PURSUING A BUYOUT PLAYER
btw, the Cavs appear to have dressed 15 last night, including Windler. Unfortunately, there was no garbage time.
I forget the rule, can you play 15 guys in a game?
Last time I checked, you could only have 13 guys active on gameday.
Now, IDK how many you can have in uniform, or on the bench, it might be a different number.
But 13 is the max active number. Not 15. If you have a full, healthy roster, 2 guys are inactive.
COVID may have chaged this. In fact I know it did. But I thought it flipped back to 13. Maybe not.
I cannot find anything on 13 anymore. If it is there, my search skills suck.
It was kind of a stupud rule, anyway. Just like it is stupid the in NFL.
Agree. The NFL has slowly upped the number of eligible players from maybe 36 to 55 or so since I have been following it. For no reason. I vaguely recall a time when you could only sub two players per play, to keep most guys playing both ways. The first two subbed were usually the QB and center for a couple of D-Backs. Limiting the total number on a team keeps total salary down. But it gets players hurt from playing too much. The union should be on that case (making more jobs) rather than upping how much money the… Read more »
WAS ONLY ABLE TO CATCH THE 1ST HALF ON REPLAY——SOUNDS AS IF THE CAVS –( WITH THE HELP FROM THE BULLS POOR SHOOTING ) PUT THE CLAMPS DOWN IN THE 4TH QTR ——GO CAVS !!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAN——” MORE BEER PLEASE FOR DAN ” !!
had plenty last night–assortment of Rhinegeist and Great Lakes , both my Ohio favs.
didn’t catch this one–celebrating my 40th, saw the box score Go Cavs!!! what a gritty win it seems…2 more til the ASB
Happy birthday, Dan!
thanks Nate!!
He’ll yeah dan!!!! Happy birthday they won it for u!!
Tonight’s box score might be the oddest I’ve ever seen in a victory. LeVert with 1 point, Cedi 4, Rubio 0, Wade 0…. With a combined 1/19 shooting. I guess defense really does win. Geez
Bulls had 22 TOs and did not exactly scorch the nets, either.
An “average” night from the Core 4 should get us around 80: Mitchell 27, Garland 22, Mobley 16, Allen 15. Maybe even a little more now that Mitchell’s groin is doing better, Mobley is improving, and Allen is in a rich vein of form. Plus, on a night when the others cannot hit a shot (2 total), the Core 4 should recognize & do more.
Home from the game now. So much fun to be there. Scrapped and clawed their way to a win despite complete 0-fer from the bench from 3 (and so many good looks, too).
Glad they pulled out the victory for you. Unbelievable that they dominated the fourth quarter when they were seemingly out of gas from the opening tip. Pure will.
It helped that the Bulls are not very good.
true, but it is not unusual for a team on a b2b to “get its legs” late in the game. the Cavs have been on the wrong end of this too often.
Good see Lakers win without LeBron and especially vs the stupid Dubs!

Dillon Brooks Cavs MVP
Hilarious…the catalyst to a championship season
Gosh I hate this Golden State team
Darvon Ham is dumb not to challenge this, if he’s also taking a time out.
Agree
Lakers not rebounding…
Fact: two years ago, on your Cleveland Cavaliers, Jarrett Allen played backup center to Andre Jamal Drummond
That’s criminal. And another reason why players suck as GM’s.
Drummond averaged the most dogshit 18/13 with 2 steals and a block in league history
for about 1 game
9 games! It was a thing for a bit until Andre saw the writing on the wall
Everybody knew it. They were trying to keep Andre happy and playing as well as he can in hopes of tricking some team into trading for him. I think they finally paid him off to take a walk.
Well, to be fair, that did not last too long.
We got Drummond in 2019-’20. Bubble year. He played 8 games for us, averaging 17.5/11.1. He played 8 games for us. With Drummond we were 4-4. Without: 15-41.
He cost us John Henson, Brandon Knight, and a 2023 2nd (a swap, essentially) giving Det the least favorable of ours or GSW’s. The flip side of that swap (GSW’s) is our only pick this year. We got that when we dealt Clarkson.
Anyway, we got Allen on Jan 13. Allen played his first game on Jan 20th. Versus Brooklyn. A 147-135 win. Played more minutes than Drummond (31 to 26). Dr: 13/7/3 1 stl, JA 12/11/2/1/4.
Drummond played fairly well for a bit. The 2nd game vs the Nets, also a W, Drum had 19/16/4/2/1 +13 in a 125-133 W. JA 19/6 +0. I am sure the idea of a dynamic center duo was floating around in Altman’s head. It was in mine.
But the bloom did not stay on the rose long. We were not very good. Drummond continued to start and put up some good lines (25/17 in a L to LAL; 23/16/2/5/2 in a W over Detroit) in 2 of the next 3 games. We were 3-2 in those first five games. Drummond had a stinker vs NY (loss) but had 25/22 vs Minny (loss). He did not dress 8n Allens first start (W vs Minny, JA 23/18/1 with 5 blocks). Drumm started the next 3, all losses (Clips, Buck x2). Stinker vs LAC but 18/9 & 28/11 the next… Read more »
On 2/8 vs the Suns, a close L, they started together. Drumm: 15/14/2/3/3/2 +3, JA 14/5/1/0/1 +0. Same next game vs Denver (blowout L), JA was clearly better. Next game v Portland (blowout L), JA was clearly better again as Drumm’s backup And Dylan Windler had a 14/10 double double!
On Valentines Day, Allen made his 4th start. His 2nd without Drummond alongside him. The Clips drubbed us, but JA had 15/10/3, -11 in a 17 pt Clips win. Allen started from there. I don’t think Drummond ever played again before being waived in March.
Anyway, I think we handled tge Allen/Drummond thing just fine.
Again, remember, we were terrible. We got Drummond & went 4-4 to finish the previous year. We were pissed we did not get to play in the bubble. We started the next year winning 3 in a row. We were a respectable 5-7 pre-Allen trade and 9-11 with Drummond. SexLand was a thing. KPJ had not played yet that year. Wait until he did! DG, Windler, KPJ was draft masterclass!
The Allen trade precipitated KPJ’s exit when we moved his locker when we got Prince.
After the dust-up, we immediately won 3 in a row. We loved LNJ. Fountains not drains! We were 8-7 that year and 12-11 since Drummond joined. I have no problem with not immediately dropping Drummond. Despite the warts, we had been noticeably better since his arrival, and he was still putting up good (sometimes great) numbers. 20/20 games.
After the 2/1 win in Allen’s first start for a dinged Drummond, we were still 10-11. We then lost 10 in a row. Drummond’s last starts, starting them both, and Allen becoming the starter all in that streak.
We won 4 in a row to get to 15-20 but that was it. Finished 7-30 to finish 22-50.
Record in 2020-21 (’19-’20).
Drummond starts: 9-14 (4-4) 13-18.
Allen starts: 11- 27
Both starting: 0-2
Again, I am not saying we should have kept Drummond starting. Just trying to remind everyone that we were .500 ish with Drummond starting there for 25 games or so. Which was a huge uptick for us. Allen came in in the middle of that. Drummond was pretty productive, warts and all. It was not crazy to jettison him day 1. Plus, I am sure we wanted to try to get something for him. A little showcasing.
But that part did not work out. We had to waive him outright.
Draymond and AD barking at each other
They should make a Charmin add. AD is soft and Draymond is a sh!te.
😂😂😂
👀👀👀
haha!
Come on, Lakers. I want GSW’s 2nd to be as high as possible.
Ditto. They’re up a few right now.
Do we have their second round pick ?
No we just hate Golden State
Lol we actually do have their pick this year. .. so an extra motivation to root against them.
Yes.
https://basketball.realgm.com/nba/draft/future_drafts/detailed
Core 4 scored 85 of 97 points. Yikes!
Okoro had 7 of the other 12.
1-19 FGs and 0-13 from deep.
They almost outscored the Bulls, though. 85-89.
The bench made ONE! shot
Turnovers: Bulls 22, Cavs 12.
Offensive Rebounds: Cavs 10, Bulls 6.
Fourteen extra possessions.
good thing. needed ’em
Every single one.
Mitchel 20+ points in last 8 of 14 games.
30 & 29 the last two.
No real standings help otherwise. Though the Nets did lose.
I kind of hope we face the Nets in the first round, with the Cavs holding home court.
Definitely prefer them than the Heat.
Definitely. The Heat team is tested.
Hopefully neither. Though I will concede I think the Knicks/Hawks getting to 6th is unlikely.
Such an impressive win. And it wasn’t like they started getting hot from 3 or anything. They just ground the helpless Bulls into dust
Cavs have a 4 game sweep of the bulls this year.
Your namesake defeated.
Wow great win
Unbelievable effort. To win all five games in a seven day span is an incredible accomplishment
good point.
5 games in 7 days. Two back to backs. 5-0.
Gritty IS pretty.
JA with 4 consecutive games with 20+ points.
1st time in career.
PURE GRIT LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOO
Great to see them turn it on and turn them off to win this.
Incredible 4th, incredible win. I was not optimistic.
That should, do it. Grind out win.
Great grind out game
Game over!
Mitchell and JA almost with a double double with 9 rebounds each.
And Mitchell gets his last rebound.
And JA rush for that last rebound for the double double.
Mitchell gets the free throws.. come on.. one more stop.
Unsuccessful yes!!!
That is clean up too.
Have to challenge if you are the Bulls.
Little body. Back of his head.
He hit Donovan in the head.
Not sure how they can overturn this
nice play, Spida got the foul
Looks like he hit Spida in the head
Billy gonna challenge
Got to score here
We need a good look.
Really need a bucket
Dodged a bullet
Dang it DG.
My god, JA…those hands…
DG WITH THE CLUTCH ASSIST
Damn that was a great pass by DG to JA
WHERE WAS THE FOUL REF, INVESTIGATE THESE CROOKS
This game is not over.
Need a bucket!
What a pass from DG and finish by JA.
Got to stay on the gas for another minute
Exactly … it can be a 4 point game if we don’t score and they hit a 3 on the next possession…
MOBLEY HUGE SHOT
