Live Thread: Cavs @ 76ers

The Cavs have traversed to the banks of the Delaware River to take on the Philadelphia 76ers in a primetime nationally televised game, the last game before the All Star Break. Both teams come into the game with winning streaks and hot streaks over the past few weeks. It’s clear both teams are part of a top tier of teams separating themselves to make a run in the playoffs and beyond. This is the classic measuring stick game, although there’s a chance Joel Embiid will be ruled out of the game, he’s a gametime decision. For the Cavs Cedi Osman and Ricky Rubio have been ruled out.
So what does calculator say about the Sixers? It’s say they’re a very well rounded team, with a top 10 offense and defense, just like the Cavs. They are also a very slow paced team like the Cavs, and they were a terrible transition defense team last season. The Sixers move the ball well and are decent rebounding team, although there will be opportunities to crash the glass against them on offense. What will the Cavs have to do win? The main thing is to NOT FOUL any shooters. Embiid and James are elite free throw merchants. The Cavs can’t put these guys on the line.

I hadn’t known this. Giving up T’s might be worth it. But, last night, think if with 1 min to go, the Cavs had the ball and were only down 2, ….
It would have been helpful.. but we had so many other mishaps on the defensive end.. The below had a bigger impact that those 2 technical free throws.. – Us giving up wide open 3’s, – Philadelphia hit its first six 3-pointers and 11 of 14 shots from the floor to jump out to a 31-10 lead. Lowe brought up the real question mark on this team, when it comes to the playoffs — lack of catch and shoot guys. Better pray that Green can fill some of that role.

the litmus test the for the Cavs at this point is they are good enough to beat average and crap teams, and occasionally a good team, but if its even skilled or a team better than them and fully healthy there is a gap team just doesn’t understand the moment sometimes, many games where they start out slow and sloppy and then the game is practically over by half if not before. the 76’ers could not have won by 40 if they wanted to. They had a very hot run in the first half, and the Cavs did in the second, and nearly caught them.
They are marginally better than the Cavs right now. Maybe not by the Playoffs.

Everybody struggles against good teams because they’re good teams. The Cavs play the same schedule as literally everybody else in the east and they’re pretty clearly the third or fourth best team. They’re good!

Gutted by the news that KLove will no longer be a Cav. Regardless of the thumb injury and the subsequent unsustainable shooting performances, Kevin’s defense had fallen off a cliff. There’s just not enough time for him to play if we want to develop Wade or go small and play Okoro or LeVert at the three. some folks at CtB are questioning Cleveland’s class, but I see it as a class act to respect Kevin by being honest about the direction of the rotations and honoring his request, all of which he deserves. We all like Kevin and hope the best for him. He might still find some quality playing time somewhere. Probably not, but it is his choice to go and chase it.

We have Denver, at Atl (b2b), Toronto, at Boston, Det, Boston, at Mia x2 the first 8 out of the gate. 4 wins is perfectly acceptable/good.
Also if they hadn’t wrecked team chemistry by giving an off the street free agent rotation minutes and pissed off Kevin love so badly he Asked out.

The discussion of who is playing is known before the game, and JB is reportedly pretty transparent with the team about it. Injury adjustments notwithstanding, he doesn’t deviate from it much. I’m sure when Kev found out Danny Green was getting time ahead of him, he wasn’t happy.

We scored 14 points in the second quarter, Rubio’s and Cedi’s normal playing time. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say we would have performed better.

We have an open roster spot. Do we think the elder Mobley or Diakite get it? We still desperately need wing shooting/scoring. Will Barton still out there? A backup C?

I don’t know why, but I feel a player of Kevin Love’s cultural magnitude deserved to play one last time in front of the home crowd and be properly cheered off it. The chain of events that led to his buyout said otherwise.
Agreed. He earned that. And I am sad the organization did not have the class to give it to him.
They didn’t cut him, he requested a buyout. He’s been unplayable. Not sure what people wanted the Cavs to do here… I don’t have a problem with how they handled it. Kevin will get a warm welcome next time he’s back, and the Cavs will have a nice tribute locked and loaded.
He was playing terribly because he was injured. He just needed to heal properly. Maybe JB shouldn’t have played him, when he had a broken thumb?
I thought it was dumb that they played him too, but I don’t know how that changes anything. He still wouldn’t be happy that he wasn’t playing. Seems obvious that he told them he could play through it, and more importantly still thinks he should be playing through it. His thumb isn’t the reason he’s a complete albatross on defense.

Data yet to be collected on albatross basketball ability, so it might be a valid comparison. One of those known unknowns.
Though, he did request the buyout.
If JB is not gonna play him under any circumstance, which looks like the case, then letting him go if he wants to is the right move.
But on a team that needs shooting so bad, I cannot believe there is not a defensive scheme that can be employed to allow him to play some (don’t switch everything!).

Man tough news today. I know KLove was bad the last month or so but he was still super effective earlier this year and especially last year. Did he really lose it that fast? I just wish we would have had some way to keep him, get him back in the rotation for 15 mins a night for rebounding and 3s.
It hurts to lose him, but the FO of this ballclub has been pretty consistent in their judgement for a few years now. They know his character, ability and what he means to the club. This would not be undertaken lightly. Ageing big guys find it harder and harder to achieve optimal fitness after injury – not to say he couldn’t have got back to the form he had earlier in the year, but I suspect the FO are looking at the timeline for playoff ascendancy and feel he will not be able to contribute meaningfully. Kevin Love! Such a great presence over the years. Seems like he couldn’t be part of the defensive identity of the team anymore.
Doing right by him is important to the organizations rep with players, so I’m glad they worked something out. Sure gonna miss him.
I fell asleep shortly after I tuned out. Looks like they put up a fight in the second half. For some reason I could’ve sworn I woke up and we were down by 40. Must have been a bad dream.
I was glad to switch off at the half, had to go to work anyway. Logged in a while later to see they were 4 down with a minute to go. My honest response was “they are gonna lose anyway, but nice fight back. Shame about the ass 1st quarter”.

I guess it’s just a fan thing, but I don’t get the constant JB criticism. Does he make mistakes, likely. But who exactly would do better? Pop, Spo… no one else really comes to mind and there’s no telling if those coaches would connect with our young players. Mobley, Okoro and DG are all continuing to improve, and the team has great chemistry. Our team stats are amongst the best in the NBA as is our record. It seems to me that’s how JB should be evaluated.
I suspect it is the same crew that used to be all over Koby for doing such dumb stuff as drafting DG, trading for JA, resigning JA, trading for LM, trading LM, and trading for DM.
Meanwhile, everyone else in the NBA thinks Koby and JR are doing a great job.

If it is, it’s probably because the Sixers destroyed the Cavs in the 1st quarter. It could be mooted that they then coasted (a little too much) and let the Cavs back in. Mobley making that shot would have cut the lead to 2 (not 4) and you can bet the 76’ers were sweating it. when the team that is down goes on a late run they often win it. Happens all the time. Happened to the Cavs this year.

The fight was good. Mitchell and Garland are for real. They need to solidify rotations after the all-star break. They still can catch the 76ers. They play them in Cleveland March 15. Circle the calendar.

Agreed–that unconscious-shooting stuff happens in the NBA. They have to do a better job on their end of handling the jitters on offense and getting the shots they want, not the ones their opponents dictate. They aren’t built to overload Okoro and Mobley with corner threes…
