Live Thread: Cavs @ Knicks, Game 4 NBA Playoffs
2023-04-23Good morning CtB!
The Cavs wrap up their Broadway series with a Sunday matinee performance in Midtown Manhattan as they take on the New York Knicks for game four of their seven game series. The Cavs suffered an embarrassing 99-79 loss on Friday night, and left many fans distressed and looking for answers. The Cavs were outassisted, outrebounded, and loss the turnover battle with an unacceptable 20 turnovers in the game. If they want to avoid an elimination game, they will have to do what they did in game two: hustle for rebounds, share the ball, and hit some threes. It sounds like Darius Garland’s ankle is good enough to play on, and the only question for the Knicks is whether to keep struggling guard Quentin Grimes in the rotation.
There were more than a few Cavs fans criticizing J.B. Bickerstaff’s decision to start Caris LeVert over Isaac Okoro, but don’t count yours truly among them. The biggest problem I have with Bickerstaff’s rotations is not going back to Dean Wade, who was a big regular season contributor to the Cavs’ success this season. But it’s hard to criticize Bickerstaff for doing that when Wade performed so poorly game one. At the end of the day, the Cavs’ problems in game one and three have much more to do with the young players Darius Garland and Evan Mobley not being able to hit any shots, and Cavs’ most important reserve Cedi Osman crapping the bed off the bench. Taking a bigger picture view, there certainly is the belief that J.B. Bickerstaff can’t coach offense, it was a criticism that dogged him in Memphis and Houston and is coming to fruition again under the intense scrutiny of the NBA playoffs. Does Sam Merrill need to make an appearance? That’s the last quiver J.B. has to goose this offense. For what it’s worth, I’d much rather see Merrill than Ricky Rubio, which hurts to say. Checking in on the calculator, tells the story:
Cavs’ offensive rating in the playoffs: 100.7
Cavs’ defensive rating in the playoffs: 102.5
There were a lot of fans who wanted to crow about this team’s “top 10” offense during the regular season, but the eye test revealed a troubling pattern: Playing Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley together hamstrings the offense, and playing non-shooting perimeter players such as Ricky Rubio, Lamar Stevens, and Isaac Okoro further hamstrings the offense. The Cavs need to enter the 21st century of the NBA, where there’s a premium put on role players who can actually shoot a jump shot. The fate of Spidaland rests on whether Danny Green, Caris LeVert, and Cedi Osman can hit a three. If they aren’t, then J.B. needs to try Dean Wade and Sam Merrill to try and fit the bill.
To Put a Fine Point on It:
Heavy sigh. We REALLY do not need to keep doing this but…

Brunson is 4-18 shooting against LeVert. The Knicks have an 85 oRTG in the 67 possessions that LeVert has guarded Brunson. The idea that they need to start Okoro for defense is baffling and, frankly, wrong

Feel like there is some second guessing around starting LeVert and I don't get it? He's the only option that allows you to play Garland and Mitchell off ball at times. Cavs were able to consistently create shots like this in the early going which you'll take 10 times out of 10 pic.twitter.com/DIdOTtf4oq

Mike Zavagno, a staunch Caris LeVert critic during the regular season, has done a 180 on LeVert because he understands the NBA Playoffs are a completely different animal than the regular season, check out his excellent game tape thread. There are reasons to criticize J.B. Bickerstaff’s coaching (prioritizing defense over shooting, the Kevin Love debacle), but starting Caris LeVert is not one of them… in fact, if anything Bickerstaff should be criticized for so easily abandoning it during the regular season instead of letting it cook and build the chemistry necessary to endure the playoff crucible. Here’s to hoping J.B. will find his inner Mike Brown and get this offense going.
Tip off is scheduled for 1:00PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes, and nationally televised on ABC, Go Cavs!
Atleast Cedi is getting to the line.. now make 2.
QUIT FOULING DONT GIVE THEM THE BONUS
Stop fouling.
so frustrating.
That’s a terrible call
Allen gotta stop putting the ball on the floor.
CARIS LEVERT SAVES THE DAY LETS GOOOOO
Caris should have passed it but glad he has the chance to get an and-1.
Caris hustle!
JA has been garbage..
Held Knicks to 19 points in the quarter….
I give Ricky some run here, but the Cavs won’t.
After we went up 69-66 on the Caris 3 with 4:40 left.. we only scored 2 points and gave up 7.. (3 on that basically buzzer beater).. and we had 3 shots blocked in that span.
Not moving the ball. Make the easy pass.
Why is Okoro and Mitchell going under the screen on Brunson when its to end the quarter.. you know he’s looking to score.
Yeah. Was terrible. You gotta go over with that little time on the clock too. Should’ve trapped.
Need a Cavalanche in the 4th!
We just need to have the most points by the end of the game.. even if its by 1.. a win is a win at this point.
Oof Cedi!
Woof
Cedi.
Dumb by Allen not to pass it to DG instead of taking on 3 defenders
I agree.. felt he should have passed it too..
Didn’t have time.
Counterpoint: he got fouled.
He had enough time to dribble to the hoop and get a shot off
That’s a foul. Harty went through his body.
Mitchell gotta trust his teammates. Stop ball hogging
He’s just been bad today. So far.
D picking up.
17-9 FOUL CALLS SCREW YOU SCOTT FOSTER
Mitchell still not trusting his teammates.
What do the Cavs to do to get a call.
CEDI DEFENSE LETS GOOOO
OKORO WHAT A FINISH
Oof. Okoro
Just make the lauo.
Mitchell didnt even run to get the rebound just now off the block.
Ice gets blocked at the rim so much
Basically 24-14 with our starters in about 9 minutes.. lets see what happens
Barrett just fell down after he hit Mobley with the ball
That was not a foul on Mobley
Yeah it was. A dumb one
But it was a foul.
Looked to me like he got Mobley in the arm with the ball then fell down
Knicks just griding now. Mobley gotta stop leaving his feet.
Spida should have passed it to DG on the break, luckily Hart walked.
CMON DONOVAN QUIT TRYING TO SHOW OFF MAKE THE EASY PLAY
Agree…. would love for DM to drive a bit more.
Mitchell showed that way too early
Good block Randle.
CARIS LEVERT $$$$$
That was a terrible call. No travel there.
JINX
Mobley penalized for huge strides.
THATS A BULLSHIT CALL REF THERES NO TRAVEL
all those missed free throws helping us tremendously.. we need to hit ours.
Mobley doesn’t need to reach.
The ball needs to be in DG’s hands… when its not.. we get bad looks with the shot clock running down.
DARIUS GARLAND WAS BUILT FOR THIS
Darius!
Donovan still looks off his game, too. Cavs are doing this with nothing from their best player. If he wakes up too . . .
KNICKS LOOK SHOOK, UH OH IS IT COLD IN THERE MITCHROB??????
DG what a turn around!!!
Cavs 9/11 in the quarter.. Knicks 3/9… loving it..
Unbelievable how DG woke up and started playing like he can…
LMFAOOOOOOOO DARIUS GARLAND DOMINATION
LFG!
Garland has the juice!
Nice to be back to playing like a functional team
I know right… some easy shots for our bigs.. CAVS Basketball!
Bad shot by Caris with no one inside to fight for the rebound.
Disagree it was open and floor balance was in Cavs favor.
Told ya we were ok
En fuego!
DARIUS GARLAND IS BACK BABYYY LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOO
That looked like offensive interference
100%
DARIUS GARLAND CANNOT BE CONTAINED
DARIUS GARLAND!!!!
This is the DG we need.. 2 scores and a wonderful pass 6-1 start.
There we go! Ambush these chumps when the Wall Street Schmucks are out of their seats!
DG has joined the chat and the game…
DG STARTING TO COOK???? LETS GOOOOOO
6 point game.
Where is the foul?
Yeah on the alley oop I didn’t see anything there…the foul was assumed cause he missed
just realized we have Scott Foster as our referee.
How the Cavs respond in the next 6 minutes will tell us a lot about them.. well more…
Since they should have come out with urgency from the onset and set the tone as the more desperate team.. (as most home teams did in game 3).
Cavs just need a couple adjustments and they’re right in this
Biggest is guys need to trust their teammates and make the open pass, not the home run pass.
and play with effort and some toughness .. stick your principles and play Cavs ball. that got you so far.
17 minutes 1 rebound for Jarrett Allen, absolute bum performance
Might as well start Rolo or the Llama at center in the second half. Seriously. Don’t tolerate this any longer, let him know he has to do more.
It’s because the Knicks are also not that great

Fedor’s been a JB homer too!
