Happy Trails, Kyrie. With the news of Mr. Irving’s trade to the Celtics we sounded the conch and Tom Pestak, Ben Werth, Nate Smith, and EvilGenius assembled in the podcast booth to break it all down. We all gave our knee jerk reactions to the trade and gave our yays or nays to Isaiah Thomas, Jay Crowder, (up the) Ante Zizic, and the Nets’ 2018 draft pick. We also discussed the enigma that is Kyrie Irving and whether this trade makes the Cavs better in the long term and short term. Playing the imp’s advocate was Tom Pestak who held out hope that Isaiah Thomas and Jay Crowder could improve the Cavs. The rest of us were more… skeptical.
Other topics included: are the Cavs’ still a finals team? What are LeBron’s plans for the Summer of 2018? (Including some inside dirt on the Lakers situation). What is going to happen with the rest of the roster? Can Boston beat the Cavs in the playoffs, (or are they even the East’s second best team anymore)? Are the Cavs’ still a finals team? We take on all this and more as we wish a fond farewell to Uncle Drew.

If I’m the Cavs, I’m rescinding this deal. Healthy IT is the only way this is a good deal.
If they can renegotiate for Tatum or Brown in place of or in addition to IT, then you do it. Otherwise I am with you.
For sure or other bench players plus pick(s)… two I wouldn’t mind taking are Rozier (liked him in the draft) and Semi Ojeleye… 3 and D player who looked very promising in Summer League.
I don’t know much bout Rozier. Nothing about the other guy. Might have to look into them.
6’7” 235 lbs. and can shoot really well. Rode the bench at Duke for a couple of years, then became AAC POY xfring to SMU. Showed in Summer League his shooting is legit.
Rozier’s insanely fast and showed he could shoot in college. PRoblem is that he’s really young still.
Also, Rozier’s defense is legit supposedly coming from Rick Pitino’s U of L.
I’m no fan of Rozier, but he could be ‘okay’ in a couple more years. Celtics aren’t trading Tatum, at least it seems highly, highly unlikely. They traded the Nets pick so as not to trade Tatum.
Yeah… my preference is Ojeleye… he’s shown that he’s a natural NBA 3 pt shooter.

The Suns are rebuilding acquiring a pick and a young player is what they should looking for, if they don’t want Irving.

A pick is worth it for Bledsoe IMO. Giving them Rozier too is more than enough compensation.

I don’t get the Boogie interest. He seems like a odd fit against GSW and with LBJ. Would people want to keep Love if we got Boogie? How do you play Boogie and Love against Ws?
Agree. Unfortunately, he may be the only star available which is why I have no interest in another pick in this deal. I want good young players or something at least to placate James in the very short term.
Boogie can hit from outside and is a top 5 talent in the league. Playing Love and Boogie against GS means either Love or Boogie could play inside-outside. GS wouldn’t be able to guard us.
Golden State obliterates post ups. They smother kick outs to easily from the post and Cousins isn’t exactly hyper mobile/hyper athletic p and r guy. Also Boogie isn’t exactly a top tier shooter. He can hit at an average rate when he has oodles of time.
Top 5? Possibly he has that potential, but in reality he is nowhere near top 5.
When Boogie’s disappointing career ends someday, there will still be people claiming he’s a ‘top 5 talent!’.

Thomas is worthless to us if he misses significant time. Worthless as a trade asset and as a player contributing to our rotation. If he isn’t right, void the deal or demand Tatum or Brown period. Giving into Ainge now would be a colossally weak management move.

Not really. We have Rose. The back end is what we care about. If he is good by March we could deal with that. IF we get a sweetener & IF the docs think he will be OK eventually.
We don’t have time for eventually. March is a long long time and he won’t likely back to form for at a least a month after he comes back. Also are you thinking he would just come right back and fit seamlessly into a lineup, let alone an entirely new system and team, without training camp? That is completely unrealistic. This year matters. I highly doubt LBJ will be pleased with just Crowder in place of Irving because his workload will increase even more during the regular season without one of those two guys. Though if we got Brown of Tatum, yes it would be acceptable. Another pick won’t matter to James. Flipping those picks aren’t guaranteed either because it takes two to tango.

If the Cavs play this right they can get even more assets of this trade. But if IT can’t be ready to play by december at least I would reject the deal.

I just hope that the Cavs don’t fall into Ainge’s “trap”, if IT is not right just void the trade. Or try to snatch Tatum or Brown from them if they say no them just void the trade.

If this is a negotiating ploy, Altman’s got some balls. Even if it’s not, this is the best news on this trade. Because now, the Celtics have got to feel pressure. Having sold Irving as such an improvement over Thomas, they may have to now throw something else in. Either another pick, or Smart. The Celtics will look so much worse than the Cavs, and Ainge will be under pressure to cave. Irving’s already ruined his relationship with the Cavs, so it’s not like him being traded will hurt their relationship.
Smart sucks.
He could replace Shump in the really-bad-offensive-who-thinks-is-really-good role. Though, he is actually a good defender.
It seems like the only possible tweak is we gat another pick, right? I mean, they aren’t going to take back Thomas AND keep Irving, and they aren’t going to give us Brown.

I’d trade Thomas for Pbev in a heartbeat. They won’t though, not if they’re smart. Pbev works for the Clips because Blake can play point forward and run through offense while pbev initiates periodically. It’s why he’d work so well here.

It took Kyrie to get that pick, you really think Patrick Beverly is worthy of the same???
I don’t trust a pick. A pick seems to be more often a bust than not, especially with the Cavs drafting. I think Patrick Beverley would improve this team enough, and get closer to the Warriors to win a championship.

In a vaccum no. But then it would be Beverly, Crowder and Zizik for Kyrie, which is a better deal.
And like I posted below. Maybe you could still keep IT, so then it would be Beverly, IT, Crowder and Zizik.

Wouldn’t our crunch time lineup against GSW be something like the following? That seems pretty good. IT just plays mostly against bench unit and not in crunch time. But helps us rest LBJ during regular season.

I agree with Nate… LBJ would definitely be crunch time PG. No one better in the NBA controlling the game. ALso see no evidence that he wouldn’t do it.
OK. So what do you propose? A dude like Beverly would not be a PG with LBJ. He would be a spot up shooter who defends PGs. I am not sure there is any way LBJ is not PG in crunch time against GSW this year.
How is Beverly not a PG w/ LeBron? Delly played great as PG w/ LeBron, and he’s the closest thing I can think of to Beverly, and Beverly is better than Delly IMO.

I really like that lineup. Probably would rather have Love than TT. That gives you 3 very nice 3pt shooters, and 3 good defenders (giving JR benefit of the doubt).
Prob swap out JR for DWade once he signs…
Yeah. Downside of DWade is he hurst spacing and can’t really defend any more. But he does give us another creator/finisher.
Plus side IMO is that Wade has that built in chemistry, and probably fewer bone-headed “wtf” plays
The problem with this lineup: you need someone to bring the ball up with LeBron. There’s not enough good ball handlers to keep teams from just trapping Bron in the back court.
This is why so many teams run offenses with two combo guards instead of the traditional point guard/shooting guard.
J.R. is an underrated ball handler. I never understood why Shump, and not J.R., was running the point.
He’s not the best decision maker (not saying Shumpert was at all). I would not trust JR in the finals to make the right play as the point man in the open court.
