Live Thread: Cavs @ Knicks, Game 4 NBA Playoffs
2023-04-23Good morning CtB!
The Cavs wrap up their Broadway series with a Sunday matinee performance in Midtown Manhattan as they take on the New York Knicks for game four of their seven game series. The Cavs suffered an embarrassing 99-79 loss on Friday night, and left many fans distressed and looking for answers. The Cavs were outassisted, outrebounded, and loss the turnover battle with an unacceptable 20 turnovers in the game. If they want to avoid an elimination game, they will have to do what they did in game two: hustle for rebounds, share the ball, and hit some threes. It sounds like Darius Garland’s ankle is good enough to play on, and the only question for the Knicks is whether to keep struggling guard Quentin Grimes in the rotation.
There were more than a few Cavs fans criticizing J.B. Bickerstaff’s decision to start Caris LeVert over Isaac Okoro, but don’t count yours truly among them. The biggest problem I have with Bickerstaff’s rotations is not going back to Dean Wade, who was a big regular season contributor to the Cavs’ success this season. But it’s hard to criticize Bickerstaff for doing that when Wade performed so poorly game one. At the end of the day, the Cavs’ problems in game one and three have much more to do with the young players Darius Garland and Evan Mobley not being able to hit any shots, and Cavs’ most important reserve Cedi Osman crapping the bed off the bench. Taking a bigger picture view, there certainly is the belief that J.B. Bickerstaff can’t coach offense, it was a criticism that dogged him in Memphis and Houston and is coming to fruition again under the intense scrutiny of the NBA playoffs. Does Sam Merrill need to make an appearance? That’s the last quiver J.B. has to goose this offense. For what it’s worth, I’d much rather see Merrill than Ricky Rubio, which hurts to say. Checking in on the calculator, tells the story:
Cavs’ offensive rating in the playoffs: 100.7
Cavs’ defensive rating in the playoffs: 102.5
There were a lot of fans who wanted to crow about this team’s “top 10” offense during the regular season, but the eye test revealed a troubling pattern: Playing Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley together hamstrings the offense, and playing non-shooting perimeter players such as Ricky Rubio, Lamar Stevens, and Isaac Okoro further hamstrings the offense. The Cavs need to enter the 21st century of the NBA, where there’s a premium put on role players who can actually shoot a jump shot. The fate of Spidaland rests on whether Danny Green, Caris LeVert, and Cedi Osman can hit a three. If they aren’t, then J.B. needs to try Dean Wade and Sam Merrill to try and fit the bill.
To Put a Fine Point on It:
Heavy sigh. We REALLY do not need to keep doing this but…

Brunson is 4-18 shooting against LeVert. The Knicks have an 85 oRTG in the 67 possessions that LeVert has guarded Brunson. The idea that they need to start Okoro for defense is baffling and, frankly, wrong

Feel like there is some second guessing around starting LeVert and I don't get it? He's the only option that allows you to play Garland and Mitchell off ball at times. Cavs were able to consistently create shots like this in the early going which you'll take 10 times out of 10 pic.twitter.com/DIdOTtf4oq

Mike Zavagno, a staunch Caris LeVert critic during the regular season, has done a 180 on LeVert because he understands the NBA Playoffs are a completely different animal than the regular season, check out his excellent game tape thread. There are reasons to criticize J.B. Bickerstaff’s coaching (prioritizing defense over shooting, the Kevin Love debacle), but starting Caris LeVert is not one of them… in fact, if anything Bickerstaff should be criticized for so easily abandoning it during the regular season instead of letting it cook and build the chemistry necessary to endure the playoff crucible. Here’s to hoping J.B. will find his inner Mike Brown and get this offense going.
Tip off is scheduled for 1:00PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes, and nationally televised on ABC, Go Cavs!
Well.. I guess its a 2016 Finals scenario.. lets see if we can win 3 straight and come out the first round at least. .. I really wanted this series to get tied at least.. sigh..
Brunson: 29
RJ: 26
Hart: 19
Cavs:
DG: 23
Levert/Allen: 14
Whelp
Just gotta take it one day at a time right now. I send Allen to the weight room.
agree on all three
Mitchell:
3/7 in the paint
2/11:outside the paint.. 0-4 from 3!
They need to work on some offensive sets in the off-season. And probably make some trades.
Gotta fire JB if they want to do that. He can’t coach offense.
Just sad… honestly..I dont mind(as much) if we loose and I genuinely felt we gave it our all.. THIS entire series (besides game 2). has been shit to watch as a Cavs fan who fought all year and actually luckily got home court..
Too bad the Cavs didn’t go for Hart at the deadline…he’s been a difference maker…
They did go after him, they didn’t have a first rounder to trade.
Didn’t the Knicks trade 2nd rounders for him?
nope. a first
I’m so tired of losing to New York teams.
Jarrett Allen was a 4.5 rebound prop bet….. the under is going to hit.
Another hart offensive rebound.
Flawed roster. They probably need to look at shopping JA for a 3.
Yep unfortunate probably the right move.
Who is going to want Allen after this series? Someone who likes baked goods I guess?
20 three point shots…. running an offense from 1979
Game. Set. Match. See you next year!
Hart has maybe been the 2nd or 3rd best player in this series game to game…
For sure.. he has actually shown up and played his “hart’ out!!
And another offensive rebound that no one boxed out Hart on.. leads to a 3.. just like game 1.
WHY ARE YOU SHOOTING TWOS???????????????
Donovan’s 1st field goal in the 2nd half at the 2 min mark.
WE NEED THREE POINTTERS WHAT THE HELL IS THIS OFFENSE
Woof. Ooto plays
Mobley watched Hart shoot that. Easy block
Was trying not to foul out i think
Just jump!
Finally levert back in
Cavs need to seriously win Game 5.. I’m not flying all the way to CLE to see the Cavs lose and their season end… and pay good money for that.. hell no.
I think they can do it. Fans can get them going. They were close this game. Just started too slow and Mitchell and Allen laid big fat eggs.
0-3 on wide wide open 3’s for the role players..,if we only had a wing who could shoot the three
Missing Lauri now.
If we somehow win this game, I’ll be shocked.
WHERE IS CARIS JB???????????? WTF ARE YOU DOING??????????
We desperately need shooters. Play Merrill!
Come on. That’s not a serious option.
Cedi. Dangit
So its like we cant get a game when DG and Spida is playing good.. last time it was DG with a horrible game.. now its Mitchell.
Mitchell was lousy last game, too…
good point…
Brunson is the best player in this series.
WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU DOING ALLEN AND MOBLEY????????????
There you go, JA.
I might have to keep this game on mute for the rest of the way.
I watched it all that way for the full game lol
hahaha .. sigh I miss my Bally sports Commentators.
Jarrett Allen. 35minutes… 4 rebounds
Darius, Levert, Okoro, Cedi, Mobley.
Jarret Allen belongs in a baking show, not a playoff game
If Cavs cant win a game like this.. how can they even force a game 7 on the road, presuming they win game 5 at home.
It’s one game at a time.
Eight straight misses by Donovan, and most of those were good looks.
but still. 0-6 from outside the paint.. 0-2 from inside… should drive more and at least get to the line if your shots arent falling.
17-10 advantage for Knicks this quarter.. that 3 to end the quarter makes it a 20-10 run after we had that 1 point lead to almost end the quarter…
Donovan 9 pts 5 turnovers
Brunson absolutely OWNING him yet again
GET JARRETT ALLEN OUT OF HERE
This is painful.
THANK YOU JB FOR KEEPING THE BEST BIG MAN ON THE BENCH YOU MORON
Letting freaking Barrett scorch you…it doesn’t get a lot worse than that. This is as bad as Mitchell can play, too.
Another easy lane for RJ for a score.. too many open looks for the Knicks.
JB YOU ARE YOU FUCKING MORON PUT MOBLEY BACK IN YOU BOZO
maybe but JB can’t make Donovan pass to a wide open Cedi or hit a friggin shot
Mitchell bad d. Hate his body language right now.
Another hustle play by the Knicks… which led to a score.. smh.
Psssst. (Try rebounding)
PUT MOBLEY BACK IN JB YOU NEED THIS GAME
I consider benching mitchell.
Mitchell ignoring open teammates again.
We need him to just drive, get fouled.. or pass out.. we need easy scores at this point..
He’s ignoring wide open teammates to shoot fadeaway bricks.
Mitchell has just been brutal…two games now…
Another questionable foul call to send Harty to the line, that would be play on at the other end.
Okoro has to get pulled if he can’t make that wide open corner 3
CARIS LEVERT CLUTCH
Big play Caris.
With the way this game has been going (at least these 2 games)…. 5 points seem so huge
I’m annoyed the Cavs went away from Okoro as the screener. That’s a great option with LeVert and Cedi in the corners.
good point.. rather them shooting than Okoro.
Also. Much better passer out of short roll than Allen.
20-12 foul calls SCOTT FOSTER IS A THUG
Things I miss from Kevin Love: intelligent play making out of the short roll/pick and pop. Allen is a disaster.
We need to score.. since going up 69-66..we’ve been outscored 14-6 in the last 7.5 minutes….. cant win on the road like that.
and fouling on almost each possession too these last times in the 4th.
Get Ice out of there!
Ice clank into RJ bucket. Bad turn there
Allen missed Cedi on the wing.
Which would’ve been a much better option.
SCREW YOU SCOTT FOSTER
Another garbage call.
Dumb foul, Mobes…very dumb…
Didn’t see a foul.
When you get your body on a guy and it looks like you’re pushing him out of bounds, they are going to call it…
BS call on Mobley
Another foul.. impossible..
I dont think Mobley fouoled him.. but yea.
Cedi has been big getting to the line. I like the rest for Mitchell here.
GOOD DRIVE CEDI LETS GOOOOO
