Live Thread: Cavs vs. Nets
2017-10-25Tonight is the second night of a back to back. History shows us that the Cavs turn into zombies on the court in these situations. Halloween isn’t quite here yet, but the team seems to be a bit too old for bodies to rebound quickly enough to handle the strain. Unfortunately, this game counts for double as Cleveland looks to help increase the value of their most recent trade/draft asset in the unprotected 2018 Brooklyn Nets first round pick.
So far, the Nets have comported themselves quite well with a 2-2 record. Every win they notch correlates to a decrease in value of that pick. The Cavaliers need to come out of the gate strong tonight to ensure their success on both fronts. Luckily, the Nets will be without starting guard D’Angelo Russell. It’s a good thing too because the Cavs are already thin at the guard position. Rose is out still and their de facto back up, Dwayne Wade, is out with a knee bruise.
The second night of a back to back will likely make this game a lot closer than it should be. Regardless, the Cavs should still have no issues dispatching this less than established Nets team. Hopefully they can avoid turning this into Night of the Living Dead. Go Cavs!
BEVERLY IS THE KEY TO THAT TRADE ALTHOUGH YOU GET SCORING FROM WILLIAMS —–HAVE ALWAYS ADMIRED T.T.’S ENERGY / HUSTLE BUT WE WILL NEVER GET ANY “O” FROM HIM SO IN ESSENCE ON OFFENSE WE ARE GOING 4 AGAINST 5
I like TT to bet when you get into the numbers, O’Quinn has very similar production a deal that is a fraction of TT’s.
too*
UNDERSTOOD YOU WIN WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY PRESENTS ITSELF —–LET ME THROW A WILD IDEA/ OPTION FOR A TRADE TO THE SUNS—WOULD WE WANT TO PUT T.T. OUT THERE FOR TRADE BAIT —-LIKE HIS HUSTLE / ENERGY BUT HE WILL NEVER BE AN OFFENSIVE THREAT —COULD ANTE FILL SOME OF THAT ROLE WITHOUT TOO MUCH OF A DROP OFF —JUST THROWIN IT OUT THERE
How do you like this NOMAD: http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=y7l395ao The Cavs send the BKN pick to LA, LA sends their 2020 first round pick to the Knicks, the Knicks get to dump Noah’s horrible contract, the Cavs promptly buy Noah out of that contract. Cavs come away with a PG who can play wonderful defense, a bench scorer combo guard, and a TT clone. The Clippers get a new star PG (maybe) in IT, a possible top 5 pick, a young center, and get to deal with Shump. The Knicks get to dump Noah’s contract, they clear some of their log jam… Read more »
I like it! Cavs get +4 wins, other two lottery bound teams get a total of -42 wins. They will jump on that.
Beverly would not have let Dinwiddie do what he did last night. End of story.
The wins thing means nothing. The trade machine has a nonsensical algorithm based on some of the trades I have seen posted. However, not a bad trade. I do think the Cavs need another elite scorer though if they truly want to win a game or two against gs. None of those guys coming back provides that and yes I think Lou Williams is overrated and a net negative with defense. I have my doubts about Thomas but he at least might provide some offensive production to replace some of Irving’s production. That especially becomes true if you are including… Read more »
YEAH STILL WANT TO MAKE SURE WE GET FAIR IF NOT MORE VALUE IN RETURN AND HOPE THAT THE TRADE TAKES US TO ANOTHER FINALS AND HELPS LEBRON DECIDE TO FINISH IN CLEVELAND ——-WE ALL KNOW WE HAVE BEEN SACRIFICING THE FUTURE FOR NOW (WHICH I AM O.K. WITH ) AS LONG AS WE CONTINUE TO COMPETE AT A HIGH LEVEL ( NOT LIKE LAST NIGHT ) ——–WE ALL KNOW LIFE AFTER LEBRON ( WITH NO YOUNG TALENT AND TEAMS LIKE BUCKS / 76ER’S / ETC .) IT IS GOING TO BE UGLY !!!—-STILLL UPSET WITH TY’S REFUSAL TO GIVE… Read more »
As far as I’m concerned, preparing for post-LeBron is putting the cart before the horse. I think someone said it on one of the pods. What’s the point in trying to build for future championships at the cost of current possible championships? If you want to build an organization like the Spurs, the Cavs are too far gone right now to start that. They can start that trend when they are horrible after LeBron leaves or retires. For now, all you need to do is maximize his current time.
WHICH WAS ONCE WE THOUGHT A VERY INTICING PICK ( BROOKLYN—-AND I AM AWARE IT IS STILL VERY EARLY IN THE SEASON ) BUT COME FEBRUARY OR SOONER IF THAT PICK DOESN’T APPEAR SO INTICING DO WE MAKE THE TRADE —-WHO FOR …STILL DON’T WANT TO JUST ” THROW ” THAT PICK AWAY IN PANIC / DESPARATION
I think that’s too long to wait NOMAD. I’m of the mindset that they should move it immediately. It’s value will only decrease.
Did you get a new crystal ball? How you doing in the stock market?
If the value of the pick drops, the other 29 teams might also realize that, so the trade value also drops.
Also, three back to backs in the first two weeks. Thanks NBA.
Games like last night are so disappointing. There isn’t any excuse for the Cavs, really. They should be good enough to compensate for second night of a back to back. Every team in the league has back to backs. Turns out I was a tad too close to the mark with the zombie theme… Ugh.
Are you doing the recap? If so, my condolences man.
Luckily, I am not. That duty is Eli’s.
It was an exciting finish, and the Cavs were perhaps too tired after the comeback. The good news is that Green looks solid. The CtB theory that Green can’t play appears to be going up in smoke.
Prepare youself for Green going on a long stretch of terrible.
Said every fanbase for the past 10 years, followed by Green not giving a crap for seasons at a time. Now, if Lebron can keep him in place and interested, that is a different conversation.
I don’t know why we expect lue to do anything other than run James into the ground. I don’t care about losing this game, but it makes no sense the way he doles out minutes. He’s not setting them up to play their best. His setting them up to play bad D because he doesn’t know how to use substitutions.
James had 4 blocks.
Trade the Nets pick for Beverly
I’m almost there…
https://twitter.com/JasonLloydNBA/status/923374060112957440
That’s awesome. Why can’t I come up with stuff like that?
Because you won’t say anything critical about the Cavs ever? Just a guess.
I’m not worried
I am not either. This is just what this team is in the regular season. We also don’t have an elite scorer as a second option right now.
Yeah. No Kyrie makes the offense work a lot harder.
It’s early. I think the vets are more affected by the early start to the season, having been used to coasting into November their whole careers. Still, I’ve been super concerned about the age of the team since the beginning. Good signs from Jeff Green are encouraging. If he can be an effective player that will be huge to have him and Crowder. Add in IT and we should be OK for the eastern conference, anyways. It’s going to be a long season…
If only were young…..If only there are no back to backs…..
This is the fifth game of the season. FIFTH. Against the NEts
Did I say fifth??
At least they didn’t get blown out like they did against Orlando…? Progress…?
Seriously though, their defense is bad and will always be bad on back to backs. It could be better if they actually can figure out how to rotate properly without accidentally double covering guys and figure out how to switch without losing guys. Better yet they could scrap the switching on the pick and rolls all together, though that obviously requires more effort and energy no matter what scheme they use whether hedging trapping, icing, etc. I blame Longibardi.
Of course as an addendum, it did seem like the nets did penetrate on them in ISO a lot tonight, especially in the first half.
I get the point of fatigue and the physical toll etc.
My point is the other team’s circumstance are almost the same with us except they are younger. The Spurs are old yet they never seem to go through this kind of embarrassment. Not this often like how we do. Because they have a legit solid game plan that they execute it. Execute. That covers up much of their physical disadvantages. We never acquired that more often than not in 3 years.
I don’t disagree. The Spurs also have limited minutes for their guys who are 30+ for the last 5 years.
Cleveland committed 21 turnovers for 24 points. James had eight turnovers and Love committed six.
RIGHT THERE WITH YOU MIKE—–THIS TEAM VERY EASILY COULD BE 1-4 / 0-5 RIGHT NOW —–MAYBE THAT WOULD BE GOOD—MAYBE CLUELESS WOULD BE GONE
Without DAngelo Russell on a back to back. Depressing
GAME PLAN AGAINST CAVS —SHOOT UNCONTESTED 3’S / RUN THE WEAVE / RUN THE FLOOR —–DON’T BE INTIMIDATED BECAUSE THEIR IS NO REASON FOR IT ……AND HOPE THE CAVS RETAIN TY AND HIS DEFENSIVE MIDGET
The defense I expect to be bad because of energy. I am concerned with how many times guys just get lost and how much miscommunication there is on switches or basic rotations. That comes down to practice and preparation which is probably on Longibardi.
I think I need to take an adult time-out with the Cavs for a few games. Just too frustrating watching this.
GOING TO TURN TO THE LAKERS / WIZARD GAME AND HOPEFULLY WATCH WALL DEVOUR BALL ——MAN THE WIZARDS ARE GOING TO DESTROY US
trash coaching
joke team
Not much coaching can do about old and tired. The NBA was supposed to minimize back to backs, other than opening night, it’s all the Cavs have this month. I hope we’re getting them out of the way now.
Yep. I really do think 7 straight finals have sapped some of LBJ’s energy on back to backs. That and him being 32. He usually still plays well on offense, but he usually looks gassed on d. He was not trying much on d until the fourth tonight and looked gassed in the third.
The Nets are coming off back to backs too. How can they have an excuse for that? What advantages does the Nets have in this game?????????
Cavs are old and have been to three straight finals. James has been to seven. At a certain point that will take a toll. The nets are young.
Seriously?????????? This is what, week 2 of the season?
Everyone came off a looooong vacation.
Both teams got same amount of training camp.
Every single player on the Cavs participated on a special camp to prepare on the season.
Now the old & 3 straight finals angle are taking a toll on the FIFTH game of the season???
FIFTH GAME OF THE F*CKING SEASON?????
Shortened preseason and training camp leads to less conditioning probably didn’t help and I know people hate hearing this on this blog, but I still think the miles add up, especially for older players. You don’t recover as quick as young guys. I mean they looked great against the Bucks but have looked terrible on back to backs. I don’t know what else explains that pattern.
I ACTUALLY ENVY TEAMS LIKE THE BUCKS / TIMBERWOLVES / EVEN 76ER’S WHO ARE PUTTING TOGETHER SOME GOOD YOUNG TALENT THAT SHOULD COMPETE AT A HIGH LEVEL FOR YEARS ——WE ARE WATCHING LEBRON TRYING TO CARRY AN AGED VETERAN TEAM THAT DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO COMPETE WITH A CLUELESS COACH…..IF THIS IS HOW THE SEAON CONTINUES ….LEBRON WILL BE LOOKING ——–CUT JOSE NOW ——-BRING UP HOLLAND OR GO GET MY MAN “ENCHILADA ‘
Maybe New York teams just have Cleveland teams’ numbers this year…
Too soon…
Green. LeBron. Korver were all good. Defense was good. The rest of the team kind of sucked.
Defense was most definitely not good… watch the game next time
Fake news. Bron missed game tying free throws and also played with little effort for three quarters. You don’t accept thirty minutes of crap for twelve minutes of maturity when you’re Lebron James. You ARE actually allowed to go into a game against infinitely inferior competition and beat them in a ho-him, business like manner by being disciplined and focus.
If you think LeBron played with little effort for three quarters, you were watching a different game.
He looked gassed for part of the third. I remember specifically one possession on offense where he passed it to shump from the top of the key and didn’t move basically leading to an ISO shump midranger. To me that signifies he was gassed at that point in the third. The fourth he took it to another level. In the first half I am pretty certain there were at least two or three occasions where he didn’t attempt much of a close out on Nets threes, none of which I think they made. I think he also was slow in… Read more »
So, out of the 46 threes the nets took, I would hazard a guess that around 30-35 were open, and 25 were wide wide open. That is horrible d. We are lucky they couldn’t hit anything the first half. I mean they were missing shots where no cavs player was within 15 feet of them by the time the ball was released. Harris missed like two or three of those alone..
Yes, was good to see Jumpin’ Joe hasn’t changed!
Green gets a hard time on CTB, but he’s looked pretty good so far, he especially looks good with LeBron, but then LeBron could probably get me a couple of buckets too…
Except for his usual 20 foot midrangers this game, he was pretty good tonight.
Defense sucked, par for the course this year…give NBA players open jumpers, they are going to hit them. Oh, and btw, Nets suck.
what a joke
garbage
Without DAngelo Russell..half of them maybe are CBA players.
I heard Mike Brown just bought a House next to Bill Cower in Strongsville! FINALS!!!!
Is it the middle of January already?
WHAT THE HELLL IS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN WE ACTUALLY PLAY A LEGIT / GOOD TEAM——-DON’T EVEN WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT
JR was “hurt” when he lost his starting job to Wade. He has been plain terrible against Chicago and again tonight. Dumb fouls, blown D assignments and he and I both made the same amount of 3 point shots. Hell even Shumpert was 3 / 5 tonight, JR 1 / 9. He’s killing us.
The defense was particularly unsettling tonight. I think I counted about six separate times where he either left someone completely unguarded after a switch or just lost his man off of a little motion from the guy he was guarding. He looked dazed and confused. Surprisingly, I don’t think the nets ever even recognized more than one or two of those occasions.
Ty Lue will tell Shump to be more agressive for the next game.
Actually thought Shump was decent in second half.
Agree. JR deserves the most criticism and Love too.
His stock is high, let’s move him…
Embarrsing. Against the Nets.
Just embarrassing.
Without DAngelo Russel. The Nets are also coming from a back to back. They traveled and got no practice too.
WOULD LET A.C. GET AFTER THEM IN THE LOCKERROOM —–MAYBE THAT IS WHY THEY LOST TONIGHT TO MAKE THAT PICK NOT LOOK SO ATTRACTIVE / WORTH KEEPING ——CAN WE SEND LUE TO CANTON AND BRING UP HOLLAND
Embarrassing. Against the Nets. Without their best player. Everyone should be ashamed of themselves.
Russell would have had 25…
And no Jeremy Lin either
Bring back Mike Brown! /s
When you turn the ball over 21 times… you’re probably not going to win…
14 from KLOVE and LBJ alone.
Nope. The nets offensive sets were generally nonexistent. They ran more ISO than we did most games last year. Those two out of bounds plays were telling too.
Nope as in I agree, btw. Also they had 19 turnovers by the fourth quarter which is digging a 6 foot deep rectangular hole for this team on a back to back.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/923371165036503040
Meh. They are either too old and too worn down from running the starters into the ground the last three years to play with any energy on back to backs or entirely in chill mode. It is what it is, though I would rather Lue just insist on resting James on back to backs if that is the case. James I am sure wouldn’t go for it…
WE HAVE NO DEFENSIVE COACH WHAT TO SPEAK OF !!!——-AGAIN THE START OF THE SEASON SCHEDULE VERY EASILY ( BESIDES THE BUCKS GAME ) COULD HAVE HAD THE CAVS AT 7-0 —WTF !!!
Lue for Coach of the year!
Am I seeing that right? Bron with 41 on the second night of a back to back against the Brooklyn Nets, five games into the season when our rookies don’t get off the bench? What’s the point, cut the roster to ten and save yourself some money.
Looks like we may need a PG. Nets pick, Shump, Cedi or Zizik for Bledsoe/Dudley.
I’d rather get Beverley, but doubt he is available…Cavs could use his red a$$ attitude and D…
Oh yeah. Forgot about him. Maybe Griffin will punch someone and it’ll all unravel for the Clips?!
TIRED OF HEARING CLUELESS ” WE WILL HAVE TO LOOK AT THE FILM “——-WEREN’T YOU AT THE GAME DIDN’T YOU NOTICE HOW BAD THESE GUYS PLAYED …..GIMMEE A BREAK……NO GIMMEE A COACH !!!!
Crowder, TT and JR combined for 10 pts as three starters.
Crowder hasn’t brought much lately. JR was freaking terrible.
Guess which number three that Dinwiddie gamewinner was… yep, that’s right…
Amazing. What will the Dubs or Rockets do?
You don’t want to know…
Cavs ties for last in the league for allowing 3s. Defense still stinks.
BULL FRIGGIN SH-T —–CLUELESS IS FORKED / JOSE IS FORKED / LAUDENBURGERBASKETS IS FORKED / THIS IS FORKING UNEXCUSABLE ………….HOW IN THE HELL DO WE KNOW / OR GOING TO FIND OUT IF CEDI OR ANTE ARE GOING TO BE OF ANY HELP——-THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING TO WATCH CLUELESS ATTEMPT TO COACH ………….COLS YOU DON’T REALIZE THIS GAME SHOULD HAVE NEVER COME DOWN TO A LAST SHOT
I’m tired of random players having career nights against us all the time.
Bad d for 42 minutes of a game will make that a common occurrence.
Dinwiddie… no longer a derogatory nickname… thanks Cavs
That. Was. Embarrassing.
Hey Ty Lue, when your old starters are gassed try playing some of your bench.
Korver with 31 minutes and Green with 27 – he just rode with the same lineup that got them back in the game at the beginning of the fourth. Probably should have had Crowder in for JR
Agree on that.
Need to get Love and Smith right
Yes. I love the smell of panic at the blog. How much do you want to bet they make the Finals easily?
Will you go away forever if they don’t?
Dude, you’re embarrassing yourself… maybe take the rest of the night off?
Who is panicking? Name names. The cavs are and just will be really really bad on back to backs. Basically the story of the game. I think we should just rest guys on back to backs, try to win every other game and finish around 44 and 38. Who cares about the regular season? This team doesn’t even need to be a top four seed to win the east.
geez
Now trade the Nets pick and send Shump to China!
We saw why Bron doesn’t attack down 2 late.
Lue is working towards getting fired.
Nope. That would be dumb.
Trade the pick now!
I guess Nate’s right… Nets are a playoff team…
Wondering if the Cavs are if they were in West…
FIRE LUE!!!!!
That is off James.
Bad decision
Make or miss. Dinwiiddie made a contested 27 footer. JR missed a wide open three.
Lol…as predictable as Fox News…
You make a stupid comment. I won’t miss an opportunity to call you on it.
You know there were around 47 other minutes to this game right. The cavs were just really really bad as expected on a travel back to back.
Game over!
I miss Kyrie.
Lol too soon
The Cavs have honestly been mediocre as a team this season…they have the Bucks win, when Korver was hitting everything, nothing impressive outside of that…
Stupid play there. Make the FT.
