2021-01-22Greetings from Bucharest CtB! Given the time difference, I was only able to see the tail end of the Collin Sexton NBA Jam Experience, but WOW! What a show!
Tonight, we’ll see if the Young Bull can pull off a repeat performance as part of the NBA’s new tribute to Ernie Banks of teams playing back-to-back games in one city tips off. He should have an even easier time getting his shots off as Kevin Durant won’t play in this one.
The Nets still have plenty of firepower with James Harden and Kyrie Irving, yet Durant was the primary reason Brooklyn was even able to stay in the first installment on Wednesday. If the Cavs can once again dominate the Nets with their waves of giant bodies, offset by their rising superstar scoring guard… it might be a long night for Steve Nash and Co.

Thoughts. Sexton was great again. Thought he would force after last game, but generally stayed in the offense. Found people on some rolls and dishes off drives. Nance was great on both ends. Finished dimes near the bucket. Caused havoc in the passing lanes. Okoro continues to impress in individual d. Cedi had an off night shooting but didn’t make too many mistakes, a couple on d. Part 2 Big picture time for Dre. I don’t get the hate. Don’t kid yourself. Cavs would not be a top 10 defense this year with out him let alone be 2nd in drating before the first BKN gameand the new additions. Anchors the backline and allows nance and everyone else to play havoc in the passing lanes because he actually is a deterrent in the paint. I have no hate for Drummond, he’s been mostly good for the Cavs this year. But Allen is the kind of big I prefer on this team moving forward. And I don’t think the Cavs are going to (or should) pay both of them, so easy choice for me.
Oh to be clear, I don’t think there is a ton of hate for Dre even from people with mixed feelings. But put that more to lead about his overall defensive impact. Also yes Allen is the choice going forward. Just makes more sense team building wise. Though if we could get off Love’s contract I would be open to look a signing both depending on the price. Of course that isn’t going to happen.
As to love, he is still probably a positive player, but Nance can’t have his minutes cut. Nance should be the starting pf. I think he’s earned at least consideration with his improved shooting notwithstanding his misses from deep tonight.

it’s that he’s been a black hole on offense taking the whole season so far into account, and completely negating his winning impact on the defensive end.

He does dumb things on offense. But I don’t think the cavs would have a good defense without him, or at least before Allen got here, and I don’t think the offense would have been good enough to offset that even with Sexton. That’s my piece.
and again, no one’s disputing his defensive impact. I’ve been the only one that I can remember (maybe Nate? LMFAO and I think he was joking) to claim around here so far that he was playing like a dark horse DPOY candidate. I don’t know what you’re trying to say in the second part, but I’m just happy that what we saw tonight was Dre play much more like Allen on the offensive end tonight, and the one time he made a really stupid play, JB benched him immediately! all good… to me watching him play so far, easy to get the hate!!! LMFAOOOO he does some mind-numbingly stupid things on the court that a well-run HS team wouldn’t do, but if JB can pull this out of him??? JB for COTY!!! And let’s keep Dre and Allen and have literally two starter-quality centers… not sure many teams can say that!

Sounds like Peyton Pritchard might’ve blown his knee in a freak play, one of the best rookies in the NBA so far this year…. gonna be interesting to see the Cavs against them because they should expect to win that game IMO without Tatum and PP.
I’m OK if the Cavs trade Andre, but it had better be for something real. None of this a pair of 2nd rounders and expiring contracts. If he walks maybe we can get a big TPE in a S&T, but I would rather play it out with this group and go 2 rounds deep in the playoffs than get a couple of low value picks.
It’s all about what’s available by the trade deadline and how desperate a team with assets might be… I don’t believe Koby will give away Drummond for pennies on the dollar. That said, Andre needs to stop thinking he’s a 6’10 PG in stretches like the end of the first half. Will cost the Cavs against better defensive teams…
Good news is that JB doesn’t seem bashful about sitting him in response.

i can see that, backing up a big game with another big game….. but he was a plus/minus monster in the last game too.
Before Sexton got hot in OT he still had 22/4/4 with a couple of steals and blocks. I would say that + also throwing 20 up in 4 mins is a better game, but tonight was realllll nice.
I’d like to see Shaq provide commentary on his run with the Cavs.

In general, I was impressed with the Cavs defense on the Turd. They made him work, for the most part. Okoro is going to be a bad night for a lot of guys in the NBA, but even on switches, they did a decent job.
Agree, but also thought Harden was quite passive in both games, deferred to Kyrie substantially. He looked disinterested at times.

As the new guy, he is trying to fit in at first. Better to start off too deferential than ball-hoggin. Plus, he is a better PG than Kyrie. Both are terrible off the ball. Kyrie has more off-ball gravity b/c he is a better shooter.
And Harden IS out of shape.
I think he’s trying to defer more after running the Harden Heliocentric offense for so long in Houston…
He averaged 20/12/8 in the two games. Nets were right there with Harden on the court, they got stuffed in the trash can when Brooklyn was forced to put Green out there at C without even a PF next to him. TLC and Green were -17 and -16 off the bench.
I mean… he played a game high 37 minutes and seemed often invisible out there…
Kyrie went on a run and took 24 FGAs out of 87 total for BRK (plus 6 FTAs). Harden was invisible for that stretch, but Kyrie is an iso player who was hot that is what you do.

Honestly what position do you even look for? Cavs don’t need depth except maybe at backup PG, still have Love coming back in the next 2 weeks. Who would you even drop from the rotation now? Dotson and Windler combined for 25 mins, and its not like those guys look bad.

Windler looks fun, you could definitely see him being that high energy off a dozen screens shooter- his D on Harden was solid (plus a steal in there). He really does have skinny legs though, I hope he can be more durable.

Still dazed that the Cavs were able to get Allen for very little…he and Okoro are exactly the pieces this team needed so badly…

Windler was good… really liked how he had immediate rhythm.
JB has done a great job getting this team to buy in to playing hard, playing defense, trusting each other… future looks bright and all this without K love. I’m not sure where Kevin fits in with this team, I love him but I’m not sure he’s a fit anymore. I certainly will hate to see Nance’s minutes reduced because of it, or Princes.
Yeah I’d rather trade Love than Drummond if anyone would ever take Love’s contract…

I’d like to see Nance’s minutes reduced to save him for a playoff run.
And Love’s shooting and rebounding will help two areas that are weaknesses to an extent.
Love likely won’t play back to backs. Plus Larry will play some 3. And LNJ/Love can play 4/5 small ball together.
Love’s spacing is very valuable. And having Dre/Allen/McGee at the 5 and LNJ/Okoro/Prince on D, plus competent defensive schemes and a willingness to play zone will help him.

Nets will improve the more their big three play together (remember our big three starting 19-20?)… but I believe this type of play is sustainable by the Cavs

Yeah, and the Cavs shot 50% on 40 3s in game 1. Nets would beat us 4-2 or maybe 4-1 in a 7 game series, but we might actually get a chance to see this year! Could be the 4 seed if we stay healthy.

I really don’t think we win both of these games without Drummond, and maybe not even either. Allen did a lot of work with Jordan off the floor against a rookie or a F posing as a C. These were great wins but they had a lot to do with the Cavs depth vs BRKs lack of depth, drop Drummond and that shifts a lot.
