Live Thread: Cavs vs Celtics

We circled today’s date exactly eight weeks ago: as soon as word leaked of Kyrie Irving’s impending trade to the Boston Celtics for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, and Ante Zizic. Now Boston comes to town starting Jaelyn Brown, Jayson Tatum, Al Horford, Gordon Hayward, and a “real grown up,” Kyrie Irving.
For the Cavs, LeBron James is a game time decision, but guys like J.R. Smith expect him to play. No word on who’ll start in his place if he sits. Joining LeBron or LeSub will be Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Jae Crowder, and Kevin Love as starters. It will be interesting to see if Rose’s hot preseason play continues and if Kyrie Irving can keep up with him. Further, it will be fascinating to see how the Cavs defend Irving, Hayward, and Co.
Speaking of Hayward, how much will he see the rock? If I’m the Cavs I’m making Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, and Jayson Tatum beat me before I back the pressure off Uncle Drew. For Cleveland, establishing the inside presence and pummeling the Celtics on the boards will also be key, as will limiting turnovers. Look for Wade to establish himself against some eager young defenders with lots of pump fakes and trips to the line.
The Cavs bench looks to go rockete league with the offensive pace they set at times during the preseason. There should be plenty of opportunies to launch for Korver and JR in that lineup and plenty of rebounds for Tristan Thompson.
It should be a fun one. Go Cavs.
Wade was pretty great at the end with the defense.

I kinda liked Wade to end the half without LeBron. Maybe Crowder will lead our team in 3s this year
Celtics picked up the pace in the second half and Cavs not ready to run with them yet. I like how the physical presence of Crowder takes some of the burden off of LeBron during the game.
Kyrie played well, did very little iso hero ball, used screens nicely to get open 3s.
Crowder will help Lebron, no doubt about that.
Tristan used to be the “it” factor on the floor…. that now goes to Crowder… he did just about everything well.
Except for hit threes. Then again we had a discouraging number of wide open threes this game.
They really only picked up the pace cause the Cavs had terrible possessions that were leading to breaks…
Yeah if Irving plays like this all year (10 dimes) too, then was Lue the issue with his offensive sets?
Kyrie was the same player under 3 different coaches.

Has there ever been a coach that has been as abysmal as Brown but gotten so many opportunities with great teams? Not sure any coach has more lucked into a ring than him.
dude – Mike Brown took a team with zero good defensive players and made them one of the best defensive teams in the NBA.
The only reason we got to enjoy the 07 Series against the Pistons was because the defense and rebounding kept games close enough for LeBron to be a hero. Drew Gooden / Sasha Pavlovic / Boobie Gibson / Z / Larry Hughes? That is NOT a good defensive team that played insanely good defense.
That’s fair. However, he hurt them via his out of bounds ineptitude and lack of any offense other than give LBJ ball, stand back and pray. Yes they could have been better offensively even with that personnel. Those teams made things so much more difficult for themselves. Also his coverage of D Howard p and rs during the 2009 playoffs lost us that series. He also failed to ever make in game adjustments at halftime during the playoffs and usually stuck with a single defensive coverage an entire series no matter what the other team did. The pistons also were no offensive juggernaut despite running some pretty stuff occasionally.
Sasha was the only one of those listed who was pretty good at D.
Brown looked really good .
So did Tatum.
Tatum looked okay… he also looked horrible on defense repeatedly…

First game. I would take this line 14 puts on 5-11 (1/2 threes) with 10 boards, 3 dimes, 1 to in a rookies first ever game against the cavs and LBJ any day from anyone.

With this game, I am convinced Bron will age well.
He is a specimen for the ages… I cannot heal after a nine-year-old kicks me in the calf, and I’m in decent health… I keep telling my kids to appreciate him while he is here… I saw he wants to play against his son at some point–that may be seven years from now…
YES YES YES. He takes contact and finishes so much more efficiently than when he was younger and bodies in front of him could force misses. He doesn’t need to get around people anymore to score in the paint.

Love had the least amount of shots (9) among all starters… and only one more than Green

Gotta love that they were able to get it together after having a hard time motivating themselves also th the big lead.

Felt Celtics played extremely hard in this game like playoff game, especially in second half…Cavs shot 30% in 3rd quarter which allowed the comeback….yes offense was rough at times, but this team will figure it out. They got out to 18 point lead so clearly things working. Hope most on here can stay positive and make regular season somewhat enjoyable this year for CavstheBlog viewing pleasure.

Brown had a really nice game. So did Irving for that matter. Put up the type of line we always wanted to see from him, 22 pts on 4-9 threes, with 10 assists and three steals. He plays like that, the Celtics will still be very good this year. Same with Brown.
Barkley felt they fall out of the top four in the East without Hayward…. you disagree?
Depends on whether good Kyrie keeps showing up, whether Brown can consistently play like this, and how quick Tatum develops. Bucks, Wizards, Toronto. The heat are overrated and I have zero faith they will challenge for a top four seed. Who am I missing?

I know it’s only game 1 but a lot to take from this one. Unfortunately given Luke’s track record, I don’t think he’ll be able/willing to fix the issues.
Shooting % & rebounds can be fixed. Choice for defensive assignments, on the other hand…
My biggest fear is coaching…
