Live Thread: Cavs vs. Warriors (#SilverLinings)
2018-01-15Just when you thought it was safe to watch a Cavs game again… along comes the annual MLK matchup with the Golden State Warriors. Who could forget the last two occasions? Last season, the defending Champs got housed by 35 in an embarrassing loss in the Bay Area… yet, it didn’t seem quite as horrific as the MLK Massacre of 2016 that ultimately cost David Blatt his job. Still, losing by a combined 69 points on this particular holiday has inspired more nightmares than dreams for the Cavaliers and their faithful.
If that wasn’t depressing enough, this year’s tilt comes on the heels of one of the roughest rough patches the wine & gold has experienced in the LeBron 2.0 era. The Cavs have lost three straight (in spectacular fashion), five of their last seven and eight of their last 11. They’ve looked out of sync on offense, and almost non-existent on defense, struggling to work out their rotations on both ends of the floor. Ty Lue doesn’t seem to have answers, outside of the cryptic “agenda” narrative. LeBron seems at a loss. Even the ever positive Isaiah Thomas is a bit down… calling his first two decent games “fools gold” after going just 5-26 from the field in his last two games.
Okay… enough of the bad news. The good news is that the Cavs are returning home to the Q, where they still own a 13 game winning streak (easy enough to forget with 17 of the last 20 days spent on the road). Cleveland is 15-4 at home, third best record in the NBA, and LeBron is averaging nearly a triple double in games at the Q this season (29.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg and 9.9 apg). Yes, they’re facing a fully healthy Warriors team (Steph Curry missed the Christmas Day game at their place), which has been on a tear since Curry returned, winning 12 straight on the road. However, there’s something to be said for having your collective back against the wall… especially against a team you are desperate to beat.
The recipe for disaster is there for sure, and there’s every reason to believe this could be another crushing MLK blowout given how good the Dubs have been and how bad the Cavs have been lately. Yet, the Cavs have rarely done the expected thing this season… and pulling out a win against the defending Champs would be just the kind of weird end to this rough patch that nobody would see coming.
Prediction: The Cavs clear away the dark clouds and find a silver lining amongst the Golden onslaught… taking a close one 110-108.
Again, I have no idea if this will come to pass… although the last three games I covered (Bulls, Blazers, Magic) just happened to be the three games the Cavs won during this 11 game stretch… so there’s another silver lining.
Catch all the action starting at 8pm EST on TNT… and, as always… chime in here!
Lue has to use the bench that worked before TT came back so Lebron and Wade can rest.
This was my fear on Wade: that’ he’d have Carte Blanche to take every awful shot he wants with no accountability.
Well… at least it wasn’t an MLK Massacre…
I don’t hate TT, but he doesn’t bring enough against the Dubs…you could have a zero offensive player before Durant went there, not anymore…
Role players are just not doing their jobs to help. TT, JR, Crowder. Need a better lineup
jr and tt are useless as alwways this seeason
Wow. So newest take away: the Cavs play with such little effort that they’re actually out of shape in January.
Kerr played nick young and some guy named looney but lue won’t play Cedi Calderon or Frye hahaha
This is where Kerr is better. He plays all his guys. He understands how important rest is to KD and Curry to finish teams off. Lue still being Ty Lue. so predictable
jr defense is beyond pathetic
He’s gotta go.
Warriors really going after cavs….wade needs like 15 min max…play Cedi or Jose
Yes!!
Ugh… 61-40 second half…
what i take from tonight is very encouraging – if we get rid of lue we have 50 percent chance to win finals
and for sure a entertaining finals
I…disagree. Give the Cavs any coach, living or dead, and Cavs have a 20% chance at best in a series against them…and 20% is being very, very generous…
I’d take a 20% chance at another ‘chip.
Rested KD and Curry lighting us up
Mostly just KD tho…
Bron back to missing a lot of FTs…
6 min stretch really hurt cavs tonight
Some D and some threes to make it close?
Love still playing hard
Curry will never learn
Still love that Bron is owning Curry on layups…
As we suspected as currently constructed the Cavs have no chance against the Warriors. But to be honest no one does.
IDK… Cavs beat themselves in the second half tbh…
Yup. Lack of ball movement. Tired/lazy shots and crap coaching.
But they generally do against this team…at a certain point, it’s not them beating themselves…
Agree went away for what worked aka driving to basket
Just want to see some damn effort!! And smarter coaching. We deserve at least that.
So I guess Lue’s plan is to just play IT until his hip gets sore?
Yeah not a case where Lue should be his usual careless self with minutes.
Well that Swaggy P 3 did it for me. Lue created this mess. I hope to wake up to tweets about Lue getting fired.
Im so furious with Lues rotations. How you not play Cedi?
Or Fry? but Cedi is better choice.
The lineup when Lebron came in in the fourth was wretched…
Who else but Swaggy P for the dagger
Now we are getting embarrassed. Raptors fought them harder than we did tonight.
Draymond throws his hands up EVERY TIME… wish I had a whistle…
Why is Wade even in?
Warriors went to the line more than twice that of Cavs

Well, it’s now or never.
Seems to be heading in the never direction. Just can’t run an offense and can’t stop them now. And bad turnovers
how the hell do u play jr now
Kevin Love played a good game. So much effort
Another Curry flop…
The warriors’ defense was good, but it wasn’t great. Cavs just helped them with terrible shots and no cLue on offense. Where is that wing pick and roll with lebron and it that was working so well.
There’s really no reason for IT to be in there anymore…
His backup is Wade. That’s the reason.
I would not have even brought him back
Cavs are scoring less than a point a minute in the 4th quarter — 6 points in the first 7:35.
Be nice to hit some threes… but I really don’t think I want them to take them…
Cavs get too damn tired to finish in 4th. These rotations just plain suck.
gs will always get every free balls
Pointless for IT to drive into the paint against KD…pointless…
So many second chances…
And just like that we watch the game slip away
Damn… gonna be a bit until IT is really back…
Swaggy with a wide open look
Cavs don’t run an offense.
This is not news…
Won’t get it done vs GS…
Cavs: doing longform improv on offense, since 2015.
This is going down the drain unfortunately. Warriors pulling away with only green and Thompson in.
Only hope is that Curry and KD sat too long and are cold now…
Great pass by Love to James.
Smart possession from Love and LBJ there…
Cavs are out of shape. That’s part of it.
I don’t understand how that is possible at this point in the season with as many minutes as most of the starters minus IT play. The bench guys minus TT all have played a fair chunk of minutes too.
Unless this team is just old…
Oldest in the NBA…
They announced 2 weeks ago that Cavs don’t practice anymore because of their age. It shows!!
How hard is this?? Keep Green in , take limping JR out. Is Ty Lue blind
Terrible lineups the last several minutes…gross…
This rivalry is getting pretty much in favour of GS..
Needed that IT shot to go…
*SIGH*
You can’t miss 14-15 shots and win games…
It is unreal how many long twos they have settled for
Still within in reach technically but with the warriors pulling away and maintaining without the starters all together, 6 point deficit feels like 15.
if we were coached half decent we win this game nicely
This was (still kind of is) a winnable game… Rotations are an issue…
No. It’s not. Warriors aren’t gonna blow a ten pointer.
I agree with Nate.
It wasn’t 10 when I typed that…
Especially with KD and Curry coming in fresh…
They are really good defensively. How many points have the Cavs scored this quarter? 6?
We are making it way too easy on them. Ball movement is gone
Same damn ending against these guys. Ty Lue doesn’t deviate and Cavs become Coyote ran over by Roadrunner. SMH
Pretty much. Lue sticks to his plans even though they aren’t working due to tiredness. Instead of giving Cedi a 3-5min at the beginning of the 4th to give IT/Wade a break, he decides to ride them and they did absolutely nothing.
How has Cedi not played? Ugh.
He’s not a washed vet…not Lue’s type in big games…
Lue’s all about name over game.
here we go again -as soon as useless thompson comes out- in comes in useless smith
Yeah, this is how you lose to the Dubs…
JR and TT mostly the reason for that run.
Agree with whoever said earlier that Lue could have gotten some positive run out of Cedi…
With KD and Curry on the bench.
Cavs beat them selves against warriors every time….just unreal
They just aren’t very disciplined and really haven’t been in the james 2.0 era. They get away from what works and lose focus.
Doesn’t help that the Dubs usually *don’t* beat themselves…
Ice cold offense. I blame WAde and Thompson.
