Live Thread: Cavs vs. Warriors (#SilverLinings)
2018-01-15Just when you thought it was safe to watch a Cavs game again… along comes the annual MLK matchup with the Golden State Warriors. Who could forget the last two occasions? Last season, the defending Champs got housed by 35 in an embarrassing loss in the Bay Area… yet, it didn’t seem quite as horrific as the MLK Massacre of 2016 that ultimately cost David Blatt his job. Still, losing by a combined 69 points on this particular holiday has inspired more nightmares than dreams for the Cavaliers and their faithful.
If that wasn’t depressing enough, this year’s tilt comes on the heels of one of the roughest rough patches the wine & gold has experienced in the LeBron 2.0 era. The Cavs have lost three straight (in spectacular fashion), five of their last seven and eight of their last 11. They’ve looked out of sync on offense, and almost non-existent on defense, struggling to work out their rotations on both ends of the floor. Ty Lue doesn’t seem to have answers, outside of the cryptic “agenda” narrative. LeBron seems at a loss. Even the ever positive Isaiah Thomas is a bit down… calling his first two decent games “fools gold” after going just 5-26 from the field in his last two games.
Okay… enough of the bad news. The good news is that the Cavs are returning home to the Q, where they still own a 13 game winning streak (easy enough to forget with 17 of the last 20 days spent on the road). Cleveland is 15-4 at home, third best record in the NBA, and LeBron is averaging nearly a triple double in games at the Q this season (29.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg and 9.9 apg). Yes, they’re facing a fully healthy Warriors team (Steph Curry missed the Christmas Day game at their place), which has been on a tear since Curry returned, winning 12 straight on the road. However, there’s something to be said for having your collective back against the wall… especially against a team you are desperate to beat.
The recipe for disaster is there for sure, and there’s every reason to believe this could be another crushing MLK blowout given how good the Dubs have been and how bad the Cavs have been lately. Yet, the Cavs have rarely done the expected thing this season… and pulling out a win against the defending Champs would be just the kind of weird end to this rough patch that nobody would see coming.
Prediction: The Cavs clear away the dark clouds and find a silver lining amongst the Golden onslaught… taking a close one 110-108.
Again, I have no idea if this will come to pass… although the last three games I covered (Bulls, Blazers, Magic) just happened to be the three games the Cavs won during this 11 game stretch… so there’s another silver lining.
Catch all the action starting at 8pm EST on TNT… and, as always… chime in here!
Is it to late to bring Griffin back for the trade deadline to clean up this mess?
Didn’t you hear? Griffin sucks because of the TT and JR contracts…/s
Griffin was the most underrated person in the entire Cleveland sports history.
Still can’t believe anyone thinks IT is playable against the Warriors. Such a Gilbert player. Small and fiesty but useless in the end.
Yep. And same last year against the Cavs, even, in a system where he was leveraged to the max…just too easy to gameplan against, trap, shut down. And you have to hide him on defense.
We need a Pod!
It’s coming…
Not sure how much longer Gilbert can justify Lue keeping his job.
Yep. It’s hard to find a silver lining with Lue.
Why is it so hard for cLue to extend his depth when it was clear that it worked during our winning streak? What on earth is he trying to find out by firing the same bullets over and over against GS? What would he lose in a regular season game? Is he actually hiding something that he doesn’t want GS to gameplan against in the future?
I am as cLueless now as to cLue is on the court..
if LUe keeps talking about ‘experimenting with lineups’ some reporter should grill him about not playing Cedi Frye or Calderon even 2-5 min a piece. Whats the worse that could happen?
about 6-8 min stretch that doomed Cavs tonight, other thant hat, thought they played really well. Silly mistakes and of course dumb shot selection, but this team can beat the Warriors,
Dubs bench doesn’t scare me at all, Kerr extended his bench with guys like Swaggy P and Looney, but Lue can’t play extra guys? unreal
Exactly
move JR and TT, DG can eat the cash if necessary, and experiment with Korver starting and Cedi coming off bench with second unit, unless we get like a Wes Matthews or George Hill. Limit Wade to 20 min/game or less, teach Crowder to drive to basket at all times, force Lue to extend rotation and have guys move ball and rebound like hell. The last part is what Warriors do, thats why they dominate
With Kyrie gone, KD with Warriors, JR and TT are really exposed as ineffective. I have no idea on what Crowder giis us.
trade asset?
Hes still a good defender.
We come out with such focus and a plan to start the game – after half time, we just go back to doing whatever without any rhyme or reason
Maybe. MAYBE. The first half is enough result for the team to know what they can do against the Warriors? Or I’m just fooling myself.
Bkn first round pick for CoachStevens. Boston hangs up laughing.
Throw in Rose…Danny could not resist…
Again Cavs have the talent, Lue is doing a crappy job at these ineffective lineups.
+100
Well EG, you were right about us scoring 108..
I think I had it 122-108. Gotta go back and check
I say time to fire lue and hire fizdale
I could live with this. LeBron’s only had 1 clearly above average coach–Spolestra. And they tore it up, even after Wade broke down.
Number of shots tonight:
Thomas – 21
Wade – 14
Love – 9
Ugh, that’s painful to see
There you see Fry gets a 3. Smh
Well, Channing can still hit threes…
Even a Zizic sighting…
