Erden to Turkey
2012-07-03It has been reported that Semih Erden will be going back overseas to Turkey to play basketball. Anadolu Efes signed the 25 year old center to two-year contract and he will not be coming back to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
I mean, fine. He wasn’t going to play much anyway. I would much rather see Andy Varejao and Tyler Zeller split the 48 minutes available minutes at center. All this means is that the Cavs should probably find a new 6’10″+ guy who can come off the bench and be tall if and when Varejao and/or Zeller get into foul trouble or suffer injury.
Ok I have decided I want the cavs to sign No One for more than a year this offseason unless Gee signs for less the 4 million. Teams are way overspending this offseason and the cavs won’t be contenders this year any way. Next year 2 things happen 1) huge luxury tax penalties start kicking in and 2) an excellent free agent class with probably 12 players who will feel entitled to near max contracts. 1 Howard 2 Paul, 3, Al Jefferson, 4 James Harden, 5 Paul Millsap 6, Bynum 7 Manu, 8, Josh smith 9 steph curry, 10 monte… Read more »
Lucas and Flynn would both be solid backups and they wouldn’t be playing nearly as large of a role as Eric Snow did in Cleveland. Why should they spend 5 + million a year on Sessions to play 16-18 minutes a game? He’s not going to be playing any minutes at the 2guard spot since the Cavs drafted Waiters. Not only that, but the Irving/Sessions duo was a complete flop.
I met Eric Snow when i was a wee lad. He was a senior in high school. We were just there to meet his brother Percy, who had just won Defensive Rookie of the Year in the NFL. I was sure all of my autographed Percy cards were going to be worth money some day. Then he blew out his knee on a scooter. Good times.
Carry on…
John Lucas III, Flynn? Why don’t they bring Eric Snow out of retirement? I’m sure he’d come nice and cheap.
Chris Grant,
I appreciate your candidness and have always suspected you must be a huge fan of Cavs:the Blog. I proposed a few sub-$4M players last weekend. If you want to discuss further, just give me a call.
I thought that Dragic deal was fair. I love his game
Can we stop talking about resigning Sessions? That is completely ridiculous. I agree with Matt.. There isn’t any reason to spend big money on role players.
Pickup Gibson’s option, Resign Gee, pickup Samuels’ option and go after a reasonable point guard like John Lucas III, Flynn, etc and call it an offseason. Even if the Cavs can’t sign a decent backup PG I’m fine with watching D-Leaguers audition for that spot. I don’t want to watch the Cavs sneak into the playoffs and get smacked around by the Heat or Bulls.
Anyone know what the protection on the Kings pick this year is?
In spite of my inner skeptic questioning the identity, Chris Grant spoke exactly what I hope to see. I’m glad the Cavs are looking overseas to find players to fill specific small needs and not placing much expectation on any one player to perform, kind of like we all hoped Casspi would pan out and offer any production from the SF position.
Sign sessions, let him back up Irving, keep irvings minutes down, and trade him again even for a second rounder. If do a trade or two a year, it could help packaging a few of those for late first rounder, like we did with the zellar pick.
These are great ideas coming from the fans! However, we will not be signing Sessions or any FA’s for over $4M this season. We are waiting this out to get some decent FA’s next year after all these crazy teams get done offering ludicrous contracts to marginal players. Let them spend their money now. Uncle Dan has promised me a big piggy bank to use next year when it really counts. When these teams realize they made mistakes, we will swoop in near the trade deadline to make a move or two to set us up for 2013 and beyond!
Just to clarify: Gibson: 4.7 mil, Walton: 6 mil, Casspi: 2.3 mil are all coming off the books after this season.
Matt, it’s been two years of bad basketball. I’m not saying I want them to make a big splash in FA this season. But they have to start making progress at some point. Lee is a 40% 3 pt shooter, and a decent defender. Sessions also shot over %40 on 3’s, and was able to create shots for others. Given what Ramon did for the Cavs last season, I don’t think people would have complained much had he stayed at his option of 4.5 mil. I’m the first to admit that 4 mil/yr is overpaying a little. But I don’t… Read more »
Matt has the same question I have. I wonder if that means we do the swap with the picks like normal…or if it’s an option we can “roll over” to the next year or something?
Scuzz, why do you care so much about filling out the roster with marginal players this year? We aren’t contending this year, lets not overpay decent backups just for the sake of eeking out another win or two in a season where, once again, wins really don’t matter all that much. Anyways, I had a question about that lakers trade. Don’t we have the right to swap 1st rounders with them in 2013? Didn’t they just trade their 2013 first round pick? I’d imagine the rights just get swapped with pheonix, and pheonix will take the worse of the Miami/Lakers… Read more »
Phoneix: 4 years, 32 million for Goran Dragic? Ugh. And 8 million a year for Sessions and Lee? I’d rather pay D-Leaguers.
With Nash in LA, Sessions will be going elsewhere. I know he wants to start, but it would be great if he came back to the Cavs. I would also consider making an offer to Courtney Lee. I think both could be signed for around 4-4.5 mil per yr. Yes, that’s a little pricey for those guys. But, both Gibson and Walton are coming off the books after this season. That’s roughly 11 mil. It still leaves enough room to make a max contract offer next FA period. Also, take a look at the Cavs 2nd unit: Sessions Lee Gee… Read more »
Steve Nash to the Lakers! The building of contenders that will self-destruct within 2 years is something I fully encourage the rest of the league to do.
http://basketball.realgm.com/blog/222056/Grading_The_Deal_Pacers_Keep_George_Hill So glad the Cavs are waiting for all the idiots to blow all their money. 8 mil a year for George Hill, a guy who can’t score 10 points a game? Larry Bird retired just in time.
HoopsDogg,
It’s like the lock-out never happened; teams are as crazy as ever. I guess the contracts are one year shorter now…so there’s that.
Tammie – nice spin on his part. Two years, probably more after-tax money, etc. Just not the NBA.
Wait . Let me get this straight. He got rid of the Cavs? No the other way around. O h my! Who is running the show around here?
I’ve read a few places that if Asik signs with the Rockets Jon Leuer may become expendable. As a rookie he was efficient offensively, solid defensively and at 6’10” can shoot with some range. Why not target him?
Richard your comment was hilarious, and spot on
YES!YES!YES! GREAT NEWS
If only he ever once showed that much passion on the cavs… He might have been a legit rotational player. Big, Coordinated, Lackadaisical.
I’m going out on a limb by saying we won’t regret letting him get away.
hes rebounding with the angles now
Maybe Harangody will sign in Germany or something
Good luck Semih! May your questionable work ethic, heavy feet, and all around clumsiness plague whatever team you just signed with.
Speaking of not so skilled lumbering big men…can we take a flier on Daniel Orton for me please.
All I have to say is that this is an awesome photo. It’s like he’s just screaming, “TURKEY!!!” at that dude’s face. Awesome.
