Cavs Interested in Derek Fisher
2012-07-06‪#Cavs‬ one of 5 teams interested in PG Derek Fisher, according to NY Times. Others: Nets, Mavs, Bulls and OKC.
I would be fine with Derek Fisher backing up Kyrie Irving and replacing Anthony Parker as the Resident Washed-Up Veteran Locker Room Presence, but if the Nets, Bulls, Mavs, and OKC are interested, I don’t know why Fish would come to Cleveland. I assume he’s in the “play for a contender or retire” phase of his career.
Tolliver huh? Does everyone playing for GSW average 12 ppg? Makes me less excited about Akibuike.
Looks like you might get it because the Cavs apparently want Anthony Tolliver…
i wish the Cavs would sign somebody just so we could have a new blog post. I’m tired of seeing Derek Fisher at the top of the page.
Even the big markets that are willing to go way over the cap have some definitive limitations. The only offseason moves teams like the Heat, Knicks, Lakers, and Celtics (amongst others) can do in the offseason is sign their draft picks (if they even have any decent ones-looking at you, Brooklyn), resign their own players, or use their MLE on an average vet who is ring chasing. If a team is trying to get three superstars on their team, they better make sure they are legitimate stars like they have on the Thunder or Heat that can carry a bunch… Read more »

I just want to say that I like the swapping of Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) for Dan Fegan (the agent). Even if it was unintentional.
@scott: I’m not sure that point’s fully litigated. I think the language in the CBA only refers to contracts in existence at the time of the CBA.
You can only amnesty guys on your roster when the cba was signed.
Delonte? No thanks. Don’t need that kind of crazy in the Locker room again. I wouldn’t mind Michael Redd though. Looks like we lost out on Ilyasova. 5 years, 45 million? Good God, Andy is a bargain. The other day we were talking about all the good things that Ferry did when he was with the Cavs, and the list came down to: Trading for Varajao, and drafting Boobie. I’d add sticking to his guns and signing Varajao to a bargain of a contract to that list. He got the best of Donald Fegan. That doesn’t happen too often. (Also,… Read more »
The Heat will own the East for the next two years anyway. It’s not a horrible time to be patient and rebuilding slowly via the draft. Let everyone else cap themselves out. In two years there will be plenty of teams deep into the luxury tax and they’ll be giving away talented player just to get them off their books.
The Cavs have been all about high character guys since Lebron left and as much as I love Delonte, I don’t think he would fit in. The possibility of adding Delonte’s talents to any team is intriguing but it comes with a price. He may do well on a contender who is always in the spotlight, he’s a good basketball player. But remember his fights with Von Wafer? What if that happens with him and Dion Waiters? All of a sudden Waiters isn’t happy and Delonte isn’t happy and the whole locker room isn’t happy. I loved watching him play… Read more »
@Ben “So the CBA basically did the opposite of what it pretended to want. Now, with higher luxury tax penalties, the only teams that can afford it at all are the huge markets. New York and LA don’t care if they have to pay 3 bucks for every dollar, but Cleveland and OKC literally cannot.” Do the math – the NBA makes so much more when a media center team (like NYK, B/NJN, LAL, LAC, Chi) does well (or media darling like MIA?) It’s all about max-ing the TV dollars & perhaps the jerseys, etc. The CBA does this without… Read more »
I’m not sure I think the Cavs need to add another guard, but if we choose to I really think they should bring back Delonte. In spite of his emotional problems, he’s a hard worker and can give just what the Cavs need. He can give the youngsters some help on defense, he can hit open 3’s, and he can handle the ball for the second unit, all at a reasonable price.
Again, we may be able to scrape by with just Irving, Waiters and Gibson, but I would add West to that trio above anyone else available right now.
$10 million for Jeff Green? Holy hell! That’s the worst contract yet, which is really saying something.
@Nathan, I’d say yes but he does bring a certain instability with him. With a young core, maybe the Cavs don’t want to risk it, @Hoops, I thought Amnesty was just once with that year’s roster? I think they are locked into JJ for the duration. Maybe trade him his expiring year. Brooklyn/NJ activity doesn’t shock me. They missed out a couple years ago on Lebron and company, They were itching to go big this year. And if they get Dwight it’s mission accomplished . They’ll be in the top 4 East. Agree with Mallory, I’d totally believe this was… Read more »
To reiterate my previous question…Delonte West? Anybody?
At any rate, I’d say Boston is in win now mode as well. It’s still not a good contract, but a little more understandable.
@ KJ
Calling a mullligan on that one…lol. I wasn’t aware of it.
@scuzz 10 mil a year for Jeff Green is not the least bit “reasonable!” haha!
@Mallory It’s not as bad as it seems. NY and LA were stuck. NY already had bad contracts. They are over the cap so they can’t make bring a pg to replace Lin, and rebuilding would be impossbile right now. LA has basically become Boston, having a roster of older players to make a final run or two. Like NY, LA has no choice but to go full speed ahead. Phoenix overpaid for Dragic, (certainly not at R. Lewis level) but even if they landed Eric Gordon, they’re not over the cap. Also, they still have their anmesty. Now Billy… Read more »
Hey C:TB writers, I know we’re a little dry for content, but how bout some in-depth looks at our new guys? I know we profiled them, but discussing their fit in the offense and whatnot would make for some good, conversation provoking content.
Amen, Mallory. However, I don’t think those teams will be able to sustain it long term. The Lakers seem built for 2 years MAX, and the fact that they’re giving away all their draft picks doesn’t bode well for them. Anyone who thought D-Will was going to turn down money to go play with Dallas was daft. This is a guy who played in TURKEY for money. The Thunder and the Heat have the biggest long term window cause their best players are still young, but other teams are going to emerge, and they’re not going to want to pay… Read more »
As long as our GM isn’t being an idiot, and as long as the Cavs are in position to replace an imploding Celtics or Lakers team, I don’t mind watching the rest of the league bash its collective head against a wall.
So the CBA basically did the opposite of what it pretended to want. Now, with higher luxury tax penalties, the only teams that can afford it at all are the huge markets. New York and LA don’t care if they have to pay 3 bucks for every dollar, but Cleveland and OKC literally cannot. This sucks. In the meantime, in order to reach the salary floor, teams way under have to find players to pay. As far as Derek Fisher is concerned, I was amazed by the fact he actually had a pulse this postseason. But in reality, the dude… Read more »
Can I just say I called it?
I knew this salary cap crap wouldn’t stop GMs from being idiots. It never does. Tons of teams going over the cap, on the verge of paying insane amounts of dough. Oh, NBA, how you never learn.
ALSO, is anyone else as disgusted by the current league design? Beyond the Nets, have we seen any single teams up their competitive edge? I seriously think we’re looking at a second Heat/Thunder finals, with the Celtics, Spurs, and Lakers, as the most likely others to make it. Does this make anyone else really really sad?
I’ve lost faith we can attract anyone in free agency including Fiser.
Is there a reason Delonte West hasn’t been brought up as a backup guard? There are plenty of reasons not to, of course, but I would sure as hell sign him before Fisher.
On a team starving for SFs, anyone interested in Gerald Green, Terrence Williams? Youth and ALOT of scoring potential there. They are also top tier athletes. We would immediately be a top 10 (maybe top 3-5) in transition. These are also guys with something to prove.
I, for some odd reason, really like Jason Thompson too. He is a younger player, 26 or 27, that could be part of a solid big man rotation. I think Tristan can take Andy’s role on the team with Thompson stepping in as the first big off the bench. Tristan, Zeller, J. Thompson make an above average big man rotation as is, then factor in that they are all young enough to still develop. Problem is 1. J. Thompson wants north of 6 million/year and 2. I really believe he wants to start. I’d do a 4yr deal for around… Read more »
I’m agree with alot that is said about Brand, but what I meant is I like him better than Fisher for that role, which is not much at all. @ Grover 13: Brand has never been considered an underachiever. Actually he is a blue collar kind of guy who never bounced back after injury. Also I think it is good we haven’t been sucked into any of these bidding wars. The only three players I would like to see us chase are Ilysova (or however it is spelled), Ryan Anderson, and Javale McGee. I think McGee is someone nobody is… Read more »
+1 to Tom P for the Bill Cosby idea. Laughs = good.
Have Bill do all the post-game interviews too.
(Well, i guess those reasons are Tyreke Evans and DeMarcus Cousins.)
I’d be all about making a decent offer to Jason Thompson. He’s always been a player that i randomly like for no discernable reason whatsoever. Can’t help but think getting out of Sacramento could do nothing but help him. That locker just seems toxic as hell to me, for some reason.
We already have Derrick Fisher on our roster, only he goes by the name Daniel Gibson.
What do Norris Cole, Mike Bibby, Toney Douglass, Keyon Dooling and Jeremy Pargo have in common?
They were the only 5 point guards in the NBA (out of 67) who had a worse PER than Derek Fisher last year.
@Hoops reading that stuff will just melt your mind! I’ll reserve judgement for when he plays an NBA game.
Also, nothing says Cleveland COULDN’T have taken Thomas Robinson. At this point if they loved him why not? There is a serious dearth of talent on the roster and those two rotating might actually be fun to watch. But from all accounts Waiters was higher on the list.
@Puddle Pirate
I hate your dream scenarios (no offense.) This isn’t 2k. Al Jefferson can’t play D. James Harden isn’t a superstar. I vomitted on your Granger trade a little bit.
Lets wait and see how good our rookies are before we start talking about trading them away.
@scuzz. Brand still had a 18 PER. Pretty damn good…
UGH. http://www.nba.com/2012/news/features/scott_howard_cooper/07/06/valanciunas/?ls=iref:nbahpt1 Valanciunas goes #2 if he’d have come out this year.
Brand would be worth it for his vet presence and some D.
I’d bid up Anderson. If he fell to the Cavs that would be great and if Orlando resigns him they blow money. I think Orlando might try to make a quick recovery next season (after the Howard fallout whatever it may be) so they and the Cavs might get into bidding wars for talent.
I’d rather pay Bill Cosby $3 million a year to live/travel with the team.
I have decided I want the cavs to sign No One for more than a year or tradable 2 this offseason unless its Gee signs for less than 4 million. Teams are way overspending this offseason and the cavs won’t be contenders this year any way. Next year 2 things happen 1) huge luxury tax penalties start kicking in and 2) an excellent free agent class with probably 12 players who will feel entitled to near max contracts. 1 Howard 2 Paul, 3, Al Jefferson, 4 James Harden, 5 Paul Millsap 6, Bynum 7 Manu, 8, Josh smith 9 steph… Read more »
@HoopsDogg
Brand is 33 and had career lows in points and minutes. That would have to be a pretty short contract. No more than two years.
@HoopsDogg 1.) 5 mil sounds good to me 2.) My list is really pretty short… After excluding the players that have already been bid up, don’t have any value, and/or the ones we’d (I’d) hate being stuck with if our bluff was called, we’re left with… Brook Lopez Ryan Anderson Danny Green Alonzo Gee…oh, wait Others might include… DJ Augustine Rudy Fernandez Jason Thompson Robin Lopez The pickins are pretty slim honestly. I’d prefer to just stand pat and not burn any potential trade bridges we might need down the road. …Hopefully someone doesn’t decide to bid up 3Gee on… Read more »
Wasn’t Fisher supposedly considering the Cavs during the last ill-fated Lyin’ King season because of proximity to the Cleveland Clinic, due to some kind of health condition with his daughter?
As far as Elton Brand- while he may be a talented big man, he’s not the kind of guy I’d use to set an example for my youngsters. Lifetime underachiever, never won anything.
@Ahmed
I think Dallas is going after Elton Brand and are also under the cap so the Mavs look like a much better fit for him than here in Cleveland.
@HoopsDogg
The only RFA’s I can think of like that would be Jason Thompson and maybe Robin Lopez. That’s a tough question to answer though because there’s always the possibility the opposing team doesn’t match. I tried to find players who were an absolute priority to their respective teams.
I think you might be able to get Brand for around the 5 million mark. He has to clear all the under-the-cap teams before Miami or someone like that can offer him a deal, correct?
So Elton Brand is getting amnestied… What do you think a good bid would be? 5 Mil per? Also, Paul Allen is supposedly livid with Minnesota for driving up Nic Batum’s price. What are some RFAs whose price we should be driving up so that teams won’t have money next year?
I like the idea of elton brand in that role. He would sure up the big man rotation and honestly I don’t want to see anyone but Irving and Waiters playing that spot. Give them every rep they can get.
