Wojnarowski: Cavs Deciding Between Stoudemire and Jamison
2010-02-12Here’s the tweet:
“Cavs front office internally debating merits of trading for Amar’e Stoudemire vs Antawn Jamison. Not much on line –only franchise’s future”
The wording suggests that the Cavs could get either one, which hasn’t been the overall buzz. He might just be talking about which player the Cavs will try to get. Still, more than enough to think about over the All-Star Weekend.
it sounds like rumors are heating up. i guess amare wouldnt be too bad a fit with the cavs. I think i like the idea of it now.
It’s not about Amare and Hickson at this point..its about Richardson and West. There can be no doubt Richardson is a defensive downgrade from West and w/o West we have 0 shut down back court defenders. Vince Carter and Jameer Nelson will love seeing the face of Richardson guarding them instead of West.
I don’t get it. Do you guys really think JJ’s defense is better than Amare’s? JJ is a very athletic talent with decent-good potential. Like someone said, maybe MAYBE some day he MIGHT be as good as Amar’e is now. The cavs have needed some offensive might out of the power-foward position since LeBron joined. It is the last piece they need to upgrade to put them over the top… and now they might do that and you are against it because JJ – who was exposed by all the good teams until Orlando IGNORED him every second he was… Read more »
No, defense isn’t all about coaching. But it is all about effort, and to just assume that two guys will come in and fit right in is insane. You have NO idea if Amare and Richardson are going to commit on the defensive end just because it’s the cavalies and there is absolutely no way of knowing that. Delonte, however, has always been a lock down defender and if you’re trying to convince yourself that somehow Richardson is and will be a better defensive player than Delonte then you are just lying to yourself. Richardson, for lack of a better… Read more »
The Cavs have never had a big man with a 20+ PER. Also looking ahead into the future, Andy will be the Starting C fro the Cavs. Andy, STAT, and Bron is a dominant, and very quick front court. Shaq and Z are done after this season. Anyone who believes the Cavs shouls stand pat believes cool hand shakes win championships. Next season if we keep JJ and Z we will have nothing to work with no large expiring contract to get better at the deadline. This is the reason Ferry must get a deal done that would make upgrade… Read more »
It goes without saying that Amare’s on court / off court numbers support the conclusion that his defense is a weakness and there has been a dropoff in his offense. Up until 6 or so games ago, you could say the same think about JJ’s +/-. Krolik pointed this out — and I don’t meant to make an implication that he doesn’t support — that our starting lineup was one of our worst lineups. JJ was probably to blame, since he didn’t get a ton of minutes. Amare does a ton of things JJ doesn’t (yet?) do, so if this… Read more »
SMH – you speak with an awful lot of conviction. Just remember, people said the same thing about Elton Brand. Fortunately we won’t be handcuffed by a bad salary with Amare, but just because he was an all-star at 21 doesn’t mean he’s going to come to Cleveland and dominate. JJ plays very well without the ball, Amare doesn’t. This is why I would much rather have a guy like Iguodala whose defense and passing are awesome for a 2 guard. Amare is a great player, but he’s a one trick pony, and I’m not sure we need that trick… Read more »
How can we say Hickson will never be able to shoot? he is 21. LeBron couldn’t shoot worth a crap at 21 either.
How good is Leon Powe? i can’t remember because i haven’t seen him play in awhile.
Jamison: 45% FG, 70% FT, 20.5 P, 8.8 R, 0.2 Blk
Stoudemire:55.5%, 77% FT, 21.2P, 8.6R, 1.0 Blk
Stoudemire is just way better and way younger
Amare Stoudemire is like JJ Hickson but way faster and better, and he can shoot. Hickson will never be as good as Amare, as much as i like him. Amare is also definitely better and much younger than Jamison. Amare has been playing in Phoenix forever, where defense is much less emphasized, but he said he wants to contend for a championship. If amare came to Cleveland i’m sure he would do everything he can to fit into the team (including becoming a better defensive player). If we could get either one, we should definitely take Amare, even if it… Read more »
BradleyH – Jamison averaged 22 and 10 in January (including a 21 point, 23 rebound game against the Knicks on Jan 30). Stoudemire averaged 22 and 8 in January, with something to actually play for. You’re right, Jamison’s numbers have gone way done in February (11 and 7), but he is by no means breaking down.
Remember Amare gets to play in a offense first scheme right now with the best offensive point guard in the league. I’m going to doubt LeBron could make Amare look any better on that end of the floor.
Amare or Jamison? Either one would b a good fit, they are both a huge upgrade from JJ Hickson!! Jamison can spread the floor and Amare is a way more of a threat in the post.. Right? Now, its this simple.. Lebron has not one, not two but 3 of the top 10 3pt shooters in the league right now.. (Mo Williams, Gibson and Parker) (Quick note: How is there still talk about Lebron not being much of a shooter? He’s in the top 10 in 3pt FGM and he’s shooting at 36%!! That makes him a 3pt shooter) Anyway,… Read more »
You guys need to look at Jamison’s game logs over the past month-month 1/2. I haven’t done it, but I check all the box scores and haven’t seen Tawn have a good game in forever. Take that how you want, he’s team sucks or whatever, but I’m worried it’s a 34 year old breaking down.
As for Amare, I don’t know what to think. Taking minutes away from Andy though, I do not like. I just wish they’d leave this team alone.
SMH, couldn’t have said it better. Sure Hickson has great potential but who knows how good he really is. People should not underestimate the impact LeBron has on making decent players look GREAT. Well, Amar’e is already a really really good player, one can only imagine how effective he will be with LeBron.
JJ Hickson has yet to create a shot for himself on offense. It amazes me how delusional you guys are when comparing a perennial All-Star like Amare to a kid who will never be as good as Amare. When Amare was 21, he was an All-Star. The Cavs need to upgrade both the starting PF, and SG. Gettin STAT and JRich does that instantly. The Cavs need a young player who will instantly become the 2nd option on offense and thats Amare. You guys remind me of the people who swore we had to keep Wally….I know I know, this… Read more »
this is a tough decision to make. i dont think that either would be comfortable being a major cog in the offense if they were brought in so late in the season. if it was in the before training camp i would say give up hickson, big z, whatever it took. now id be hesitant, especially with JJ’s improving play.
Windhorst is no god, but it’s a little shocking to hear Cavs fans comparing him to a clown like Wojnarowski. Windy has great sources on the Cavs; I remember back when he had the scoop on the Larry Hughes/Big Ben trade a full day before anyone else … Windy’s been on the Amare trail ever since he (and Shaq, for that matter) was linked with the Cavs a year ago. As for why the Cavs would make a trade, let’s not kid ourselves … it’s all about keeping LBJ in Cleveland, not expiring contracts 2~3 years down the road. Getting… Read more »
3.) The biggest reason why we should make a move (imo) is not for this year, but for the flexibility to add more talent in the future. Let’s face it, this team is really good, but we rely on our size in Shaq and Z a lot (especially against LA and Orlando) and those two guys could both retire at the end of next year. I’m not sure our team with them is a dynasty and I am sure they aren’t without them. That being said, Amare is not going to opt out of his contract so he will be… Read more »
Guys, 1.) Windy is a beat-writer, not a GM, so we can’t expect him to know exactly what the team is doing. Lots of times, he’s hearing from the same sources as guys like Stein or Woj at Yahoo. He wasn’t the first to know about Amare. 2.) windy has been adamant that unless the Cavs get a “slam dunk” they won’t be trading Hickson. I know we all get a boner when we hear the name “amare” but how many of us have really seen him play since the Suns were regularly winning 60 games? If he’s so great… Read more »
Shaq might know Amare best in this situation. I hope ferry talks it over with him before making a decision. Jamison can shoot the three pretty well so I hope he gets picked up. Amare is damaged goods.
Yes there is reason, JJ is going to be a 20 pt 8 rebound guy in a couple years.
Amare has the 13th highest True Shooting % in the history of the NBA, and the 2nd among active players (effectively tied with Steve Nash). If all you have to give up is Z and J.J. (and Wally) to get him, is there really even reason to hesitate?
I say we keep Hickson, he is still young, and has produced a handful of good games during this 13-game win streak. With how they have been playing without Mo, just think how good they will be when he is back. LeBron said during an interview on NBAtv last night that Mo is coming back right after the All-Star Break. But, if there is a trade, i would rather have Jamison, because one, he scores just as many points as Amare, and 2, he’s a much better defender.
Kevin’s absolutely right … Windhorst’s track record speaks for itself. Right now, the mixed signals just suggest that the Cavs are pursuing several different options … when and if the Cavs actually get close to a deal, I have a feeling we’ll hear it from Windy first.
Rich,
Windy is not reporting like “any other trade rumor guy…” He has an ear to the latest chatter and has a responsibility, as well as a selfish interest as a beat writer, to tell us these things. The thing people seem to be missing here is that Ferry and the front office are exploring every possibility it seems and then will make a decision on what is the best for the future of the team. If I had to bet my money I’d say that they still aren’t 100% on any one player yet.
He isn’t better for this team than Jamison is…but honestly if he signs an extension and agrees to a trade id take him over Jamison. You’re right tsunami, his peek was a few seasons back…but what he is right now is what he’ll be for 6-7 years to come and that isn’t a bad player..just not great. If they can get Amare for one contract and hickson, then I say do it but only if he signs an extension. I’m still torn over that and Jamison though if they can get Jamison w/o giving up Hickson. I dunno which is… Read more »
John,
Amare’s prime was 3 seasons ago. He’s nothing like he was in 2005-2006. Injuries have taken their toll on him
He might not be better than Jamison right now.
If you believe the front office should pick Jamison over Stoudemire you are out of your mind. Amare is in his prime and is a great pick and roll threat. He does not play great defense but Mike Brown would motivate him. If some one has the talent to be a good offensive player than they just need hustle to become a good defensive one as well. Amare is the right choice. Hands down
It should be this simple…if the Wiz aren’t giving up Jamison w/o Hickson then it’s Amare. If the Suns can’t get amare to agree to an extension and trade, then it’s neither and thats howit has to be.
Please, Basketball Gods, let the Cavs front office decide to pursue Jamison. I can’t deal with the trade deadline blue balls anymore. Amar’e would be awesome (and perhaps pay dividends over a longer amount of time), but Jamison is a better option for this particular Cavs team.
