Anderson Varejao Out for the Season
2013-01-21Per the Plain Dealer’s Twitter account:
#Cavs announce Anderson Varejao developed blood clot Thursday, on blood thinners, will miss remainder of season.
This doesn’t make a huge difference basketball-wise. Tyler Zeller will continue to learn on the job by playing 30+ minutes each game, and Varejao’s absence will help the Cavs’ lottery odds. But oof, blood clot? That doesn’t sound good. We all want you to get healthy and live a very long time, Andy.
” THERE WAS NO OPPORTUNITY TO TRADE ANDY BEFORE HE GOT HURT THIS YEAR”
As long as we include the offseason, and any time before then when he was healthy.
This stuff about him being “injury prone” and “we should have seen it coming” are beyond ridiculous and you should all be ashamed of saying it. ^^^ What he said. It would be wonderful to predict a blod clot in a lung, but that’s never going to happen. C’mon… You can’t say he is injury prone, as all of his injuries are not related to a single cause. It’s not like he has bad knees, weak ankles, weak bones, etc. He plays hard and has for 8 years, it’ll catch up to him eventually – someone running around and banging… Read more »
Do you guys follow the NBA? There are no trades in Dec. or Nov. unless you would be happy with literally getting a bag of chips for Andy.
Repeat after me: THERE WAS NO OPPORTUNITY TO TRADE ANDY BEFORE HE GOT HURT THIS YEAR.
Now let’s wish him a speedy recovery and move the eff on…
Absolutely feel bad for Andy, but no more than anyone else with a blood clot. We shouldn’t be any more emotionally invested in him than anyone else we’ve never actually met. There are countless examples every year of how we don’t really know anything about professional athletes and how foolish it is to get too emotionally invested in a player. I also don’t think that because a guy’s injuries seem unrelated that we can’t call him injury prone is false. Health is a skill, and some guys’ bodies just can’t hold up. Yes, this seemed pretty freaky, but it’s pretty… Read more »
Andy worship hardly Cols714. It’s just a common courtesy to wish someone well when they are sick or hurt. It’s called civility.
If Andy is injury prone then what is Kyrie?
Of course I meant underpaid. Mmm
Andy has missed most of the last 3 seasons. He also has two 48 game seasons and a 53 game season. He MIGHT be injury prone. Why isn’t it okay to be a big Andy fan while acknowledging that his constant injuries have a profoundly negative effect on our favorite basketball team? It’s also disingenuous to claim that Cavs fan are callous. He’s far and away the team’s second most popular player and has his own hair giveaway. He’s also not overpaid, considering he gets 8 mil to play 30 games a season. When he’s on the court, he’s one… Read more »

We should have traded him when we had the chance? When did we have the chance? You guys know of offers I don’t know about? Unless you guys mean we should have traded him last year, I don’t know what the complaint is. NO one was going to give us anything of great value that far out from the trade deadline this year. They also knew of his injury history and I’m sure were going to play a wait and see until they committed something of serious value for Andy.
Cory and all you injury timebomb guys, the man has been in the NBA 8 seasons, and has missed significant time from injury 3 times. Yes, a lot, but certainly not a forgone conclusion that he would again blow up in some timebomb fashion. Was Z not worth it? Are a myriad of others not worth it? Yes, he was risky, but to call the situation he’s currently in inevitable is pure hindsight, and nothing a rational person could have taken to the bank 5 weeks ago. He’s never had a muscle contusion or a bloodclot before, and lots and… Read more »
I thought the window for trading Andy was short and they missed it. All season people commented on how Andy was a bargain. Not really when you consider how often he’s out of the lineup. The injury time bomb was always waiting, but actually finding a decent trade would have been tough. I didn’t buy the Peter Vesley rumor of Deandre Jordan and Bledsoe for Andy (would have done it). Same with the Twolves move. I’m fine with the Cavs having AV for the next two years as a super sub off the bench. I could be wrong but I… Read more »
Andy deserves nothing from any of us. This Andy worship has gotten out of hand. A decent player, yes, but nothing to lose sleep over.
I agree Nathan about the super insensative remarks about Andy;s LIFE THREATENING blood clot in his LUNG. He deserves our respect and certainly our loyalty. Lebron left a huge nuclear bomb of a hole when he left. Andy never gave up on this team. NEVER. He still played hard every night. He didn’t mope around and feel sorry for himself like Mo Williams did. Mo gave up. He didn’t give it his all and he was absent from being the leader. BUt there was Andy! He played hard every freakin night for Cleveland and brushed off most of his bumps… Read more »
Of course we root for laundry. Otherwise all of us would be Heat fans right now because we loved LeBron so much.
Pulmonary embolisms are pretty hard to predict, Dani. It makes me wonder what he was doing over the past couple of weeks, but let’s just be grateful he’s ONLY done for the season in this case.
@Nate – I don’t think the Z episode had anything to do with LeBron leaving. Z certainly wasn’t too upset by it as he immediately chose to be bought out and resigned. And I know league rules and all that about not being allowed to have those under the table agreements beforehand – but, come on. He is one of Danny Ferry’s best friends and now he’s in the Cavs front office. It may have stung him a little bit at first but I think he got over it pretty quickly.
@Dani – should have seen a blog clot in his lung coming? No way. He’s prone to bad luck.

I feel terrible for him and I wish he hadn’t gotten hurt. That’s my emotional response. We should have seen this coming, as he has an extensive injury history, That’s my business response.
This sounds very serious. I hope Andy takes it easy.
Amen, Nathan. If we’re not rooting for people, we’re rooting for laundry. I often think that the callousness the Cavs showed towards Z when he broke the career games record and when they traded him were part of the reason LeBron left. Loyalty works both ways. There are just certain things transcend sports/wins/losses. Get well soon, Andy. We’ll see you next season.
Some of the comments here amaze me…Sure, I feel bad that this hurts the Cavs’ championship aspirations, but mostly I feel bad for Andy. The guy’s a class act, works as hard as anyone, and he keeps having things like this happen to him. And then he has to listen to fans from his own team, the only team he’s ever played for, and the team he gives his all for every game, say “oh. guy just can’t stay healthy. shoulda traded him.”
As much as it pains me to say this, I agree with Cols. Whatever it is about his physical makeup, Andy is injury prone and we should have traded him when we had the chance. Now that all that’s over, though, I hope he gets better soon. Andy is a Cleveland hero.
Well, it looks like we should have traded him earlier. I understand why we didn’t. But once he’s healthy we need to get this guy out of here.
If we ever become contenders, we need to seriously considering just sitting Andy for the regular season and unleashing him in the playoffs. Dude cannot stay healthy anymore.
Being the massive hypochondriac that I am, I googled pulmonary embolism. Apparently even without treatment the cause of death is below 30%. This bodes well for Andy’s future.
All that being said, get well soon Wild Thing! We all miss ya lots.
