Three Trades to Consider
2013-02-21So with the trade deadline fast approaching (3 PM Eastern), we threw down the gauntlet and asked for some (realistic) trades we’d like to see the Cavs make. Here’s what our writers came up with.
Kevin: Let’s try this:
The Cavs should send Daniel Gibson to a contender, and Chicago looks like an ideal team to trade him to. The Bulls rank 29th in the NBA in made three-pointers per game, they are in the luxury tax, and also employ a big point guard to pair him with in Kirk Hinrich. When Derrick Rose returns, Boobie helps spread the defense during a Rose drive.
Cavs trade: Daniel Gibson
Bulls trade: Richard Hamilton, Vlad Radmanovic, Marquis Teague
For the Cavs, the trade is mainly about Marquis Teague, a late first-round pick in 2012. At 19 years old, he could play in the D-League for a season with Livingston backing up Kyrie, then emerge as a youthful, athletic & skilled sub in 2014 – 2015. If he reaches his full potential, he serves as another trade asset down the road. Radmanovic, and possibly Hamilton would be immediately waived. For the Bulls, they give up only one rotation player – and that is a 35 year old shooting guard with an 11 PER. In return, they receive a 26 year old with career 41% three point shooting, that may finally be able to resume his natural role of floor-spacer. The Bulls save $4 million, as the move pushes them lower towards the luxury tax line.
Tom: OK, here’s my blockbuster trade idea.
Admittedly, I don’t have a ton of interest in the CBA and all the rules and how often deals are made purely for salary cap relief/luxury tax savings. Â The Memphis deal seems more mind boggling every day. Â So here is a trade mostly about fit.
Cleveland gives up Tyler Zeller and guys that probably won’t be in a Cavs uniform in 2 years anyway: Boobie, Casspi, and Walton. Â Cleveland gets their SF of the future Ersan Illyasova who becomes a top 5 SF in the East. Â They also agree to absorb Caron Butler’s 2-year deal and trade him away the following season to a contender. Â It’s a Zeller for Illyasova swap as far as I’m concerned.
Indiana needs playmakers. Â As much as stat geeks and Jason Whitlock love Paul George, I’m not convinced he can set the other guys up. Â Remember, in playoff games, half-court execution is necessary and having ball-handlers that create easy baskets is huge. Â Unless you employ the triangle offense. Â Indy goes all-in this season acquiring Brandon Jennings and sharp-shooter Boobie Gibson. Â They are currently 26th in assists and steals, so adding Jennings helps here. Â They got smaller, but they’re front line is beastly on the boards. Â They give up? Â Ewing-theory candidate Danny Granger to….
LAC!  Danny Granger is great at sitting in the corner and hitting wide open 3s.  Occasionally he’ll put the ball on the floor and score.  But really, he’s a rich-man’s Caron Bulter (perfect!)  With CP3 running the show, Granger certainly won’t be counted on to be the “closer” or the “go-to” guy that he could never succeed at in Indy.  Granger is a big upgrade and on the Clips he’d be content getting a sneaky 16 points every night.  That is a devastating roster and the Clips give up Eric Bledsoe and (now expendable) Caron Butler.
This isn’t Milwaukee’s year and they have about 9 forwards.  So they punt on the potentially well-overpaid Illysova and the mercurial Jennings for the supremely athletic (and huge upgrade on D) Eric Bledsoe.  They also get rookie Tyler Zeller who is on a very favorable rookie contract as well as a bunch of expirings to help them get to an insanely cheap team + Monta Ellis, and go from there in 2014.
Nate: As I’ve stated, the goal of any Mo Speights trade should be to get a future first round pick and/or first round talent. It should also be to trade Speights to a team with no cap room, so that the Cavs can attempt to sign him in the offseason. Accomplishing this is as simple as sitting down with Speights and saying, “Look. We really like the way you’re playing. But we’re not competing for a playoff spot, and we’re looking to trade you to someone who is. So go compete in the playoffs. If you decide to opt out, we would love to negotiate with you this off-season.” With that in mind, I designed this trade a week ago, which sent Speights to San Antonio in exchange for a first rounder. The main response was, San Antonio won’t do it. So I give you the pu pu platter de jour.
In this trade, Golden State gets Speights, and the Cavs get prospects Jeremy Tyler and Festus Ezeli, the injured Brandon Rush, and a future 1st round pick. The Warriors can’t send Cleveland their pick this year because it’s committed to Brooklyn, or in 2014 because of the Stepien Rule, so it would be in 2015 or later. Rush would have to agree to this deal because of his Bird rights, but given that he will probably pick up his player option for next year, I doubt this will be an issue. Golden State does it because it gets them under the tax this year and gets them a quality 4th big. Cleveland does it because it gets them prospects (Tyler is still an intriguing player with a 7’5″ wing span), a future first rounder, and a guy who could be a rotation player next year in Rush.
The only drawback of this trade is that Cleveland would have to cut two players. To remedy this problem I propose this trade . Here, Cleveland trades with Minnesota to get Brandon Roy and Derrick Williams. They give up Walton, C.J. Miles, and Josh Selby. Some other picks might be shuffled around, and maybe the Cavs throw a 2nd rounder or two the TWolves’ way, or maybe the right to swap some picks in future years. Cleveland does this trade to get Derrick Williams, and immediately waives or buys out Brandon Roy. Minnesota does this to clear Roy’s salary off the books and clear $8 million in cap space for next year (they’ll need it to sign Pekovic), and to get a shooting guard who is actually healthy.

Whoa. Demetrius is right. That’s shame on me. Illyasova hasn’t played 1 second at SF in at least 3 years. Not sure why 1.) I thought he was a SF, and 2.) ESPN lists him as a SF. Bball-ref lists him as a ‘Forward’. I’ll just speak in tongues: “but the nba positionless miami heat Paul George point guard Tim Duncan all-star voting – not my fault”
No one on an NBA blog is going to bring up the fact that Ily isn’t a 3? No one? Remember the guy who put up double figure rebounds last year? The stretch 4 with strong board numbers? Seriously?
Sigh.
Brandon – I can certainly judge Zeller. His efg% on jumpers is .312 – awful. Sure, he’ll probably pick it up, but the guy went to a top tier college program for four years. That he is so unpolished, and needs to make such big developments at the next level is a problem. We’re not talking about a 19 year old one-and-done here.
I’m a big fan of future draft picks especially from teams that notoriously fall apart and blow up their rosters every few years. The Bucks, Twolves or Warriors would be ideal. Hell, if karma is real than Chris Paul’s knee is going to explode the minute he resigns his max deal with the Clippers. Sterling’s sins against humanity will catch up to him at some point. I thought the Clipps should have made that Garnett deal if it was at all possible because the future is never guaranteed and I don’t think they can win the title with their current… Read more »
@Steve You can’t judge Zeller with his FG%. He shoots the elbow jump shot. He is there to spread the floor. The game has changed. Dwight Howard ain’t even a legitimate center for he has no back-to-the-basket game. Also, Dwight Howard never had to deal with spacing the floor, he just camps out on the blocks for rebounds. Zeller has to play on the perimeter and learn the block. He is doing just fine for now. He is a true 7 footer. The kid has the work ethic, he gets a lot of fouls. The guy was ACC player of… Read more »
DIONS FG% UP TO 400!!!!
DIONS PER UP TO 13!!!!
YES!
I know fans love to dream big about cap space, but the Bucks aren’t moving Ilyasova or Jennings. Do you really think they can lure better contracts to Milwaukee? They’ll move Ellis for spare parts. Also, Zeller isn’t that appealling. A big man who frequently gets pushed out of rebounding position and shoots 42.5% from the floor, is a whatever big off the bench. Not a return for a guy like Ilyasova. Roy’s contract may not be guaranteed next year, so you’re not getting Derrick Williams, especially for absolutely nothing in return. The kid is improving, albeit slowly, but they’re… Read more »
The Bucks move is not happening because Ilyasova is only going to be traded for a star. Also, the Bucks have made Jennings untouchable, so that’s a no go. Monta Ellis is the one the Bucks are trying to move.
As for Williams, the Cavs would probably have to move him again, because having 3 picks in the top 4 is about impossible when it comes to extensions.
I really dont see any of these happening. The memphis deal was just that… a DEAL. Lets stand pat unless we can get another DEAL. TZ is a 7 footer with skills and just a kid. Id way rather see him turn into something than get an iffy SF. We dont need to hit a home run right before the trade deadline. The boobie to chicago deal would definitely be intriguing and i certainly would not complain. DaveR, I guess I havent seen all that much out of Ersan. If he really does develop into something special that deal could… Read more »
The best trade is Kevin’s trade. Tyler Zeller had a good foul last night on Anthony Davis (hahaha). But, the offense they drafted him for will develop. It takes much longer to be a big as a pro. The competition is stiff. Zeller can be a good contributing big man, he has the talent and work ethic. He is also a true seven footer unlike Ezeli and Tyler. Plus, all the time Coach Scott has given him this season has to account for something. Ezeli is awful. Hollinger’s report on him states that “the less he touches the rock the… Read more »
I pretty much would be happy with any and all of these trades but Nate I would literally kiss Chris Grant if he could pull off trading for Tyler, Ezeli, and Derrick Williams. Living in SF I watch alot of Warriors games and both players are definitely talented. Ezeli reminds me a lot in terms of raw ability and energy of a shot blocking Andy when he first came to us. D Will would be amazing and we’d have 3 of the first 4 picks in the 2012 draft which would have to be some kinda record.
I’m all for trades that 1) add additional assets (like the Bulls trade to get Teague) or the Minnesota trade to get Derrick Williams who could thrive in this offense and 2) do not eat up cap space for the 2014 FA class.
The Ilyasova trade is not favorable IMO. He can score, but I do not like that he eats up so much cap space and for so many years. I’d much rather bank on drafting a future SF in the draft (Muhammad for example) or go after LeBron in 2014.
I like the bulls deal but Boobie hasn’t played real minutes in a long time and his health history sucks. Rip’s contract is intriguing so I think they could move him for a better piece.
Ersan is 25 and a top talent SF. By the end his deal could be considered a steal. Remember how many people thought the Cavs overpaid for Andy? I can’t see the deal happening but damn I’d love if Grant could swindle it.
Tom:
I don’t see why the Cavs would want to give up TZ for 2 “Meh” small forwards.
Would rather see TZ develop and hope he can become a solid NBA big than take on two very underwhelming players.
Now if we ended up with Granger, then okay.
Also, the collection of horrible players the Bucks receive for Ilya and Jennings is silly.
Kevin:
This trade is okay but with the reports of Rose returning, I don’t see then giving up Hamilton if they think they can make any kind of playoff run.
@Witmi – agreed the Bucks move is more about getting bad and shredding contracts. (which my be completely at odds with their actual plans) The Monta/Jennings things isn’t working out. If they choose to build around Monta and Larry Sanders (which I think they will) it makes sense to be THE team with the most flexibility in the next 2 years. This move gives them that. Ilysova played at an all-star level last year. May have been a bit of a fluke, but he’s looked pretty good lately since starting the season off horribly. Since Jan 1st, he’s shooting 48%… Read more »
I’m down with the Minnesota trade. We might have to throw in some more guys or a pick but it seems reasonable.
I wonder if any team would be interested in Andy for next year and what we could get for him now. He might be a guy to throw in to a trade as well.
