2013-06-25Lots and lots of smoke blowing here…Â Let’s get to it.
The winds of the Cavs draft seem to be blowing Victor Oladipo’s way over the last couple days.
- Cleveland.com/The Plain Dealer’s Jodie Valade profiles Oladipo’s explosiveness and overlooked-edness. The site also features an Oladipo #1 opinion as their “comment of the day.”
- FearTheSword steals the meat out of Chad Ford’s Insider piece on Oladipo being rated as the best prospect by a group of ten NBA GM’s.
Chad Ford counters this morning that he thinks the Cavs are taking Noel #1, and that Orlando is ready to pounce if Noel falls to #2.
Meanwhile, the Beacon Journal’s Jason Lloyd rates McLemore as the best wing in the draft, advocates for the Cavs to consider Otto Porter #1.
The Cavs brought in Akron’s Zeke Marshall, Kent State’s Randall Holt, Bucknell’s Mike Muscala, and Florida State’s Michael Snaer to work out and compete with each other yesterday.
Chad Ford drops the bomb that the Cavs offered the Blazers the #1 and #19 picks for LaMarcus Aldridge, and the Blazers hung up the phone.
Hoopsworld says the Cavs are trying to package their first two picks for a player, but are interested in Pierce, and there have been discussions with Dallas over Marion.
But in more Shawn Marion to the Cavs news: “Dallas must go directly to Marion and ask him to opt into the final season of contract” before they trade him by Friday’s deadline, which means Marion isn’t getting moved before the draft, unless he really wants to play in Wine and Gold. Plus, Marion has a 15% trade kicker that someone has to pay.
Bob Finnan of the News Herald scouts possible Cavs second rounders.
Luol Deng linked to the Cavs… and let me expound on this one a little. I batted around this idea with Kevin yesterday, and came up with a trade I could live with. The Cavs would get Deng, the #20 pick, and the draft rights to ACB MVP Nikola Mirotic (ACB is the best league in Europe). The Bulls would get the #1 and the #31, and possibly a player or future second rounder. The Cavs would probably try to get a future protected #1 out of the Bulls. This deal has more twists than driving through the Cuyahoga Valley, though. The trade gives the Cavs Mirotic, who would be in the top five of this draft, but has a difficult buyout. Basically, given his slotted rookie salary, no team can pay Mirotic enough to pay his buyout, which is rumored to be over $2 million (though details are sketchy). Starting in 2014, three years after his draft class, Nikola’s slotting no longer applies and a team can pay him any amount under their cap or with an exception, thus allowing him to make enough money to buy out his ACB contract. To complicate matters even more Deng is a free agent after this coming season, and could walk if he does not sign an extension (though the Cavs want all the 2014 cap space possible). Also, Deng had a particularly nasty bout of (suspected) meningitis during this year’s playoffs. If I were the Cavs, I’d want a doctor to sign off on him before I traded for him, which makes trading before the draft pretty undoable. So yeah, this trade has about a .01% chance of happening. But one year of Luol Deng, the #20 and a player who has as much upside as anyone in this draft? That’s a win for the Cavs, and gives the Bulls the cap space to go after a high level free agent this summer, if they amnesty Boozer. Of course, why would the Cavs want to help a division rival build a powerhouse?
Gordon, Agreed on Ibaka. And it would be awesome to get back into the top 5, but I don’t think your proposal is very realistic. Charlotte will have a good chance at Wiggins regardless of who they draft, they aren’t gonna drop 8 spots for that reason, and two heavily protected future first rounders probably aren’t gonna do it either. I Don’t think Oladipo is a glue guy either, guy will be an all-star and I would be fine with either he or Nerlens at #1, maybe porter as well (although porter is a “glue” guy, but seems to be… Read more »
The idea that Ibaka for the #1 is the value of this #1 pick is just asinine.
That European dude you mentioned that won’t be clear until 2104 might be dead by then.
This is fun stuff for sure. Can’t wait to wake up Friday a.m. and go “Wow. Grant did it again.”
@JHill There were reports that the Thunder were interested in the first pick. Ibaka for the #1 pick is probably the value of the selection. It’s Magic 8 Ball and Mushroom time for NBA writers. It’s probably a bullshit trade rumor, but Ibaka would be the basis for the trade. It’s also pretty obvious that Presti’s pact with Satan expired after he handed Perkins his contract and dealt Harden a year too early. I like Ibaka. I don’t think you can justify paying a big more than $7 million a year unless he can stretch the d or defend the… Read more »
@Gordon – Totally agree. That is too much for love.
@ Best Case, how do we draft Len if we give the #1 to Charlotte?
Unrelated, I have an odd feeling Grant takes Oladipo #1. Just feeling it.
Fear the sword mentioned MKG being available. Best case scenario:
#1 to Charlotte for MKG, draft Len, grab Marion for 31 33 and money.
Done.
Yeah Cory because they are going to give up the guy they chose James Harden over for Nerlens probably gonna suck Noel and whoever is available at 12.
#1 for Serge Ibaka and #12?
According to Chad Ford, Cleveland offered Minnesota Thompson, Waiters, and the #1 for Kevin Love.
If those are the trades we’re offering, then god have mercy on this team. What an awful, awful trade for us.
I’m not sure about you guys, but I’d take Waiters, Thompson, and Noel/Len/Porter over Love any day of the week.
I just want to see the Cavs make it to the playoffs this year. We can’t do that with the guys we have now, an we can’t do it with the guys we can get in the draft. So what does that leave us? Trades an free agency. I think we should sweeten the pot a little on the Aldridge trade, and just see what happens. Maybe add Varajeo and C.J Miles with the #1 and #19 and see if they take it. If not, run straight to Al Jefferson the moment FA starts and cough up some bucks for… Read more »
No one’s giving up a top five pick for a poo poo platter, Gordon. And the Cavs aren’t dumb enough to give up a possible lottery pick in next year’s draft for a top 5 in this one. The Cavs are getting one top 5 guy, and that’s it.
Even if we miss the playoffs, with that lineup it wouldn’t be by much. Would Oladipo/Porter, along with Noel, be worth giving up a 1-3% shot at Wiggins? I think so..
JHill
You might be right. Might. But if our front office is handling their business under that assumption, then they should all be fired. You don’t run your organization with the belief your best player(s) will get injured next year. If that is the case, trade AV and Irving for whatever you can get, tank, and go after Wiggins. Seriously.
Gordon, I know we all want to think that we will make the playoffs, but if we are going to be honest with ourselves we really are one injury to either Varejao or Irving away from potentially getting a top pick again. And chances are if we do trade next years pick both of them will get hurt and we’ll be screwed. It’s Cleveland luck.
Also – I do think one of those teams in the top 5 would be willing to trade down for future assets so that they are better equipped to tank for Wiggins. Charlotte could be that team at #4. Jordan knows he needs a superstar, and he isn’t getting that in this draft. Load up on future picks, try to be the worst team in the NBA (again), and hope the basketball gods finally shine on Charlotte, with their name change back to the Hornets, and you get Wiggins. That would give Charlotte Wiggins (assuming), along with potentially two #1’s… Read more »
Dan Because we are so far under the cap, I’m pretty sure we can absorb Marion’s contract without needing to send salary back to Dallas. Nick I like Oladipo a lot too. I think he is going to be one of those “glue” guys. However, not at #1. What I hope Cleveland does is trade whatever future assets necessary, other than their own #1 pick next year, to move back into the top 5 to grab Oladipo. Take Noel #1. Then trade #19 to Dallas for #13 and Marion. Then bundle #13, #31, and #33, along with the Sacramento future… Read more »
As much as they need a big man I really hope they go Oladipo or Porter. The more I read and watch, I’m leaning towards Oladipo. They could then still try to work a deal to move up to 13 and look for the best available big man (Steven Adams if he would unlikely fall that far) or still go with a guy like Karasev. If they stay at 19 they could look at Lucas Nogueira. You then have your two 2nd round picks that could be packaged for something or you look at guys who can be stashed. If… Read more »
I know this won’t happen (but I like to overextend my wishes), but what if we were able to pry Pierce away with (2) 2nd rounders and move up from 19 to 13 while eating Marion’s contract for a year? And, we draft Len. I would be pretty happy if 2 of the previous 3 things happened. However, wouldn’t a player have to be involved in a #19 for #13 and Marion swap to make salaries work? The goals that I believe the Cavs should have are: 1 – Need another promising big man (Len, or maybe Noel, but I… Read more »
