Recap: Philadelphia 93, Cleveland 111 (Or I can see clearly now, the Bynum’s gone)
2014-01-07As if a bitter cold spell that had been ominously hanging over Cleveland was dramatically lifted, The Cavs seemed renewed tonight, in spirit and play. The Cavs ran the Sixers out of the Q, bursting out to a 16 point lead after the first quarter, and they kept pouring it on till garbage time, leading by as much 28 in the third. This was Cleveland’s first blowout win of the season. It was a fun one.
Cleveland’s passing was sharp and focused. They moved the ball from side to side, moving the defense to set up their attacks, and there was very little pounding the rock. The Cavs selfless passing led to 21 dimes in the first half, and 29 for the game. Despite the two straight days of sub-zero temperatures outside, the Cavs were red hot, shooting 49.4%, and they channeled the power of the arctic vortex to cool down most of Philadelphia’s key scorers to hold the sixers to 39.5% from the field. Andy had a double-double in the first half, and helped the good guys out-rebound the bad guys: 58-38. The Andrew Bynum ice fog had been lifted, and most players seemed legitimately excited to put on a showcase for their new small foward. Let’s talk player grades.
C.J. Miles played one of his best games as a Cavalier. He hit eight three pointers in the first half and finished with 34 points and a franchise record 10 threes. Shooting 10-14 from behind the line, he was launching a flaming, net-seeking ball of fire every time the basketball left his hand. Even better, his shots came almost exclusively within the flow of the offense — off screens, kickouts, and transition opportunities. Even better than that: Miles played decent defense and chipped in five boards, two dimes, and two steals. The Cavs were a ridiculous +32 when he was on the floor. Grade: 199,900 BTU Ultra Low Nox Natural Gas High Efficiency Condensing Indoor Tankless Water Heater.
Anderson Varejao proved again why he’s the best high post center in the league. After a 10 point, 10 rebound first half, Wild Thing finished with 18 points and 14 boards off 8-10 shooting (in three quarters). He provided twine ripping elbow jumpers, timely cuts to the basket, dribble drives from the foul line, sharp passes, and a coast to coast dunk that will be recorded in his career highlights. At 9:34 in the first, Andy grabbed a defensive rebound, pushed the ball up the court, and when no one stopped him, he dribbled to the foul line, and head faked towards Earl Clark who was on his right. Evan Turner bit hard on that fake, and Wild Thing two hand slammed it, completing a coast to coast at 9:37. On defense, Andy held Spencer Hawes to nine points and only two rebounds. Varejao is playing like the guy who was on track to make the All-star game last season. Grade: the beach of Ipanema, Zona Sul, Rio de Janero (where I wish I was, right now).
Tristan Thompson finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds off 47% true shooting, but his defense on Thad Young was the best part of his night. TT channeled his Canadian arctic powers to hold the reigning Eastern Conference player of the week scoreless on 0-7 shooting, which was a huge key to winning the game. Grade: Frozone.
Kyrie Irving played a very efficient 30 minutes at point guard. He did not dominate the ball, and made a concerted effort to pass and get the team into their offense. The results were eight assists and only one turnover, to go along with 16 points on 80% true shooting. The hop in his step was there on both sides of the ball. Irving finished with a team leading three blocks. If Kyrie can play like that every night, the sky is the limit for this team. I want some of what he’s drinking. Grade: steaming hot cup of gourmet bulletproof coffee.
Earl Clark likely played his last game for a while as a starter. He continued to struggle with his shot. Clark ended up 1-6 in 11 minutes, clearly the worst of the starters. They didn’t need him, and hopefully he can return to being an effective backup power forward soon. Grade: that last winter glove in the bottom of your closet that was made for the other hand.
Alonzo Gee got three minutes of scoreless run, tonight, and didn’t even see the floor in a fourth quarter that was almost entirely garbage time. Grade: that old set of golf clubs that is still in your trunk obscuring your search for jumper cables as you rummage, holding your cell phone for a flashlight in the frostbiting wind.
Tyler Zeller looked solid tonight with nine points on five shots, including two monstrous dunks. He also added four boards and three blocks, and looked positively athletic. Welcome back, Tyler. Grade: a tuned-up snowblower.
Anthony Bennett: The good news? ‘Tony had eight boards in in 18 minutes. The bad news? He was 1-6 with five turnovers and four fouls in 18 minutes. Grade: six cold gum drops in the snow.
Dion Waiters struggled with his shooting and contributed my only “why the heck are they doing this?” moment of the game, when the Cavs ran their old 1-4 iso set with Dion at the top of the key to end the first half. After a 11+ minutes of fantastic ball movement, that play failed failed. But otherwise, Dion was a willing and productive passer. He tossed some sweet feeds, as he drove and dished to help C.J. to his record setting night, and set up Zeller for a rim rattling and1. Waiters finished with eight assists and 12 points on 5-14 shooting, 1-4 from three, and 1-3 at the line. Grade: eight frozen ropes.
Michael Carter-Williams was an offensive maven for the Sixers: 33 points, six boards and 5 dimes. He ate up the Cavs guards all night, and all were culpable in his ability to get to the rack at will. MCW’s just so damned long. The Cavs guards had a hard time bothering his shot at all. Can we re-draft? Grade: Jötunn.
Matthew Dellavedova was a part of the assist party too. He had six dimes, but went only 1-5 from the field. His lone basket was a gorgeous tear drop high off the right side glass — the kind of inside shot SuperDova’s going to have to master if he’s going to stick in the NBA. It was good to see. Delly was not at his defensive best. He was a part of the group that allowed MCW to run wild and start the great winter that leads to the start of end times, Ragnarök. Seriously overmatched on defense, it was clear Delly wasn’t bothering MCW in the least. Grade: Nestle Hot Chocolate Mix with Marshmallows.
Carrick Felix, Henry Sims, and Sergey Karasev got a lot of run in the fourth quarter and did little of note with it. Grade: a January walk through the parking lot of the Canton Civic Center.
Conclusions I didn’t expect the post-AB3 era to start this well. The Cavs are upgrading from a starting small forward who hasn’t made a field goal in two games to a two time all star. By week’s end, the thermometer will be in the forties, and the Cavs will embark on a five game road trip starting at Utah. The trip will tell us a lot about how the rest of the season is going to shape up. I can’t wait for Friday.
First rule of executive management- manage to your strengths; hire people around you that excel where you are weak, and let them do their jobs.
Interesting perspective, grover13. Never heard it explained like that before, but you may be onto something!
@Greyat/Nate: I don’t think either of your assessments of what Mike Brown’s message is with the ISO play is correct. I think it’s this: “I don’t have any idea how to draw up a working play on the fly, so I’ll just give it to my most talented guy & see if he can bail me out.” Mike Brown has what I like to refer to as “Defensive Coordinator Syndrome” in a head coach position. This was always most applicable to me in football- think Marty Schottenheimer, Buddy Ryan, Wade Phillips- but it applies to Mike Brown as well. Here… Read more »
Speaking of last minute plays and trust – I remember the CAVs – Bulls 1989 playoff game. Cavs are down 1 with something like 8 seconds to go. Wilkens draws up a play – Ehlo inbounds from the sideline to Nance and cuts to the hoop, Nance immediately passes back to the cutting Ehlo who makes a good look bank shot to go up 1. We all know how the game unfortunately ended. Point is – that was a play. No stand around dribble for 5 seconds and hoist a 30 footer when your down 1. Ehlo was probably the… Read more »
Rescued your comments, Rodney. Sorry it took so long.
Greyrat, I enjoyed your comments about Mike Brown and his post game comments. To me what he’s really saying is, “I don’t trust these guys to run a play with moving parts at the end of a game. I’d rather give them something simple.” To me, that’s just “give up” coaching.
As to the 82games stats. Delly helps the team immensely, and is more than the sum of his box score. Mike Brown should give Jarrett Jack all the time in the world to let his back heal.
“As for the Waiters iso play: I’d really like to see the Cavs come up with some real, actual plays for the end of the game. Putting them in at the end of quarters in a blowout is a great way to practice them. If you want to see what a great end-of-game play looks like, watch this video of Manu beating the Grizz at the end of overtime last night. http://youtu.be/aiSG2yRAUFo” I agree 100% here. ISO plays in the last minute or so of a tight clutch game are doomed to fail. Even when the Cavs had arguably one… Read more »

“Or by providing a couple shooters to help clear out the lane”
There are a few Cavs that are shooting well from 3pt range: C.J. – .394, Delly – .429, Clark – .375, Jack – .392. Maybe it’s just a matter of getting the shooter in the right spot for a kick out. I thought they did that well last game.
I think his lower than average FT% is getting to Dion this season, he wasn’t avoiding contact this obviously last season that I can remember. But he’s struggling from the line and I think he’s pulling a Drummond (IE try not to get fouled) the only problem trying not to get fouled and just dunking the ball is much easier when you are like 6’11”.
Or by providing a couple shooters to help clear out the lane
“you need to either be: a ridiculous finisher from any angle (Tony Parker) or able to create the contact situations that put you on the line (Corey Maggette).”
…or consistently find the open man that is caused from the drive to the rim. In defense of Dion, the Cavs could help him by sending a cutter to follow him on a drive.
I swear Andy is quite possibly the most underrated player in the NBA. Sheer dominance. I also like the rebound numbers from Bennet. He has a long way to go, but he might, under certain circumstances, when looking at his stat sheet under a blacklight, be slowly pulling his head out of places his head should not be.
Nate I’d be cool with the bucks deal and the Kings deal. Jhill Hotsauce was referencing the fact that we could of signed Korver for close to the same deal we gave Jack this summer. But I’m hoping the Knicks offer us something for Jack as well. I’d do jack and the Heat pick for Tim Hardaway and Felton.
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=k5zb5l4 I mean no chance of actually happening but in some universe out there this frame work would work if we threw in enough picks. The universe were Memphis Minnesota and Houston all go into serious funk’s KLove demands a trade, Omer Asik becomes so unhappy he punches Mchale in the face, and the analytic driven Grizzlies fall in love with Asik and Waiters realize there core will never get it done and because Marc Gasol is pissed and has more value than ZBo they trade him or maybe both and want to get there draft pick they gave away… Read more »
Great writeup, grades are flawless, lol.
Waiters consistently digs his own officiating grave with the constant shlopping*, glaring, and complaining, even when the replays shows he was barely touched. Dion needs to learn how to “DRAW” fouls by purposely running into guys who are back peddling, because no ref is ever going to give the hacks and touch calls to a spoiled brat.
*Shout/Flop
T is on the money. It’s a skill (learning how to draw fouls). Waiters often tries to avoid contact, making the shot more difficult.
Some players have this skill, others don’t. But if you are a small guy trying to make a living as a slasher, you need to either be: a ridiculous finisher from any angle (Tony Parker) or able to create the contact situations that put you on the line (Corey Maggette).
I have 2 comments in eaten by the monster
I got it on pretty good authority that Grant and Presti were discussing a Waiters, Thompson, Bynum +picks package for Ibaka, PJ3, and Lamb. It actually makes sense once you realize how overrated and overpaid Ibaka is. Not sure what picks were involved or who broke it off but the deal kinda makes sense from both sides. OKC clears a lot of cap space, gets a pseudo replacement for Ibaka who isn’t nearly the shot blocker or jump shooter but might be a better rebounder. Waiters fills in as the new Kmart/Harden bench scorer and now they can avoid the… Read more »
Jhill Hot Sauce was being cynical and humorous because they were both free agents this summer and both received simiiliar deals but one was a steal and one is an albatross and both those things were fairly predicable
82games updated there stats again and again there really aren’t any surprises. Of players getting at least 20% of the available minutes plus/minus the good are Anderson +8.3, Delladova +9.3, waiters +7.6, Miles +8. The not so good Thompson +0.5, Irving -2.2, Clark -2.0 (though I’d love to see a breakdown of the +/- when he plays the vs the 3). The ugly Jack -5.8 Gee -7.0. Makes me wish for more lineups of Delladova, Waiters, Miles, Clark and Andy. My guess is that Clark’s +/- when he plays the 4 is much better.
As Rodney Mac pointed out – 82games updated its +/- stats.
My takeaways: The Cavs are better than opponents when Delly plays (no other Cav can make this claim). The Cavs almost break even when C.J. Miles plays. Everyone else is bleeding points.
No way Atlanta would do that without a draft pick. But I like where your head is at.
How about Jack for Korver?
(facepalm)
Jimmer might actually be able to shoot if Kyrie and Deng are drawing all the defensive attention.
Maybe not, Cory. Kings are looking to add Andre Miller. What about Jack instead? Jack for Jimmer and Travis Outlaw works. Jimmer couldn’t be worse on defense than Jarrett.
And never underestimate New York and some of these other teams that are over the cap. If Jarrett doesn’t improve, the Knicks and Nets are to need a point guard and have no ability to sign one. He can probably be moved
Only way to trade Jack is taking back a bad contract or throwing in a draft pick to get ten to take the deal. Still possible. Tank season has started. I’d be okay with that Bucks deal.
Apparently, the Cavs kicked the tires on Thad Young, but Philly wanted their 2014 first rounder, which they weren’t getting. I wanted him more than Deng (though not necessarily after watching Thad last night). I want no part of an Asik for Andy trade. That’s just dumb. Next move for the Cavs is going to be trying to peddle Jarrett Jack, who probably is untradeable, given the length of his contract, without taking back an equally bad contract in return. Something like this would work, but It’s not a smart long term plan for the Cavs. http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=kqfajec In that case… Read more »
Oh and I watched that Spurs play in real-time last night. Pretty amazing execution…
You are being slightly disengenious about the refs esp as related to Dion. Again, the Fox Sports broadcasts shows and comments on this TREND all the time. This is not merely my opinion. Look at the foul shots Philly got last night even though they were blown out by the end of the 1st quarter. Ludicrous…
Btw, you did see Dion tie the game on an iso last week, yes? ;)
I did see a lot of missed traveling calls. I’m really getting tired of the two step gather and the two step finish. The refs also missed several calls where guys were moving their pivot foot before dribbling. And Tyler has gotten no love from the refs when it comes to foul calls the last two games, but refs miss calls. That’s basketball. You just hope they even out in the end. As for the Waiters iso play: I’d really like to see the Cavs come up with some real, actual plays for the end of the game. Putting them… Read more »
These kinds of performances excite me. We dominated a team that we should dominate. Kyrie looked to pass, offensively our guys were active without the ball and on we had a good level of defensive intensity throughout. Deng will certainly be a huge upgrade and finally provide a defensive ‘stopper’ on the wing. His additon may be enough to get us into the playoffss, but not enough to make us contenders. We still need guys like Kyrie, Dion and TT to continute to develop (intentionally left Bennett of this list as I don’t see him improving to a near all-star… Read more »
*stands up and claps,* Canton Civic Center follows, Q gives a standing O, and the nation rises to its feet, celebrating a Cavs win and a great write up. Finally the dumpster fire has started to subside! *maybe*
I think I will frame this piece. SO positive…… I can’t remember a piece this positive on so many Cavs players from Nate Smith. Job well done! It was enjoyable to read. Thanks!!
Bennett was frustrated cuz he clearly got pushed on his dunk attempt. No one will mention it because of the dominant win but the refs were terrible last night. Missed countless travels by MCW, gave Dion nothing per usual and once comically called a foul on Bennett after Bennett lost the ball after being shoved from behind on a double-team! And Nate that ISO set you claim to hate worked just fine. Just another day of refs not calling a foul for Dion. Oh and lest you think I am paranoid, go back to the broadcast and see the look… Read more »
I liked the game – but as they say, ‘consistency is the hallmark of success’. Looking forward to seeing this type of play for a few more games before I get too hopeful.
@Hot Sauce-
Great point. I still think Jack has value as Kyrie-insurance, but that’s about it. He doesn’t belong on the court with Kyrie at any time, and only to bring the ball up the court when playing with Waiters.
I’d love to see Karasev get some of those minutes. It bugs me that with all of the spacing issues the Cavs show on the court, possibly the best spot-up shooter on the roster can’t even get off the bench.
Underrated story here: this is what the team looks like when Miles takes Jack’s minutes. Things work a lot better when you don’t have 3 ball dominant guards on the court.
Maybe they can move Jack. He just isn’t the right fit here. Miles and maybe Karazev should get his minutes. The ball moves a lot better.
So much to love about last night’s game and great write up, Nate. Loved “six gum drops in the snow”. I have no idea what that guy is doing but if he can turn into solid player, it will make a great story. In other news from ESPNChicago: “I thanked [Deng] for all that stuff that he did,” Thibodeau said. “It’s almost 10 years. I think he was a big part of lifting the team out of the five or six years in the lottery before he got here. Then what he did for me. You couldn’t ask anything more… Read more »
Did anyone else notice that it looks like Bennett dropped a bit of weight??? He seems to have slimmed a bit since the season opener, enough that I noticed at least… After I got happy about that, I saw him completely blow a dunk by using one hand and pouted he didn’t get a foul when he should have went up strong anyway. And, he lost his handle on some ridiculous move that seemed to be behind his back, but I think he lost the handle before he swung his right arm behind his back. The announcers seemed to want to… Read more »
I don’t think many points are going to be able to stop MCW especially if he fixes that jumper. The kid is a PG with the body of Otto Porter, that’s retarded. Reminds me of Livingston before he got hurt.
I thought Kyrie looked a little Chris Paul-ish at point guard last night.
Comment made a few days ago: If CJ could do for 36 minutes what he sometimes does for 5 – he’d be great.
Bennett seemed to be pouting in the waning moments of the 4th quarter. I was excited when he got put back in to see if he could maybe build some momentum, but instead he got frustrated and stopped trying. You’re blowing the team out, sure, but maybe you should at least try and look better than the mostly D-League quality 4th quarter roster Philadelphia was playing. Pretty disappointed.
Andy was just SO SO SO SO SO smooth tonight… he’s my religion, guys.
