Some NBA Draft thoughts
2010-06-24-So the Cavs don’t have an NBA Draft pick. On the bright side, this means they won’t be able to draft Christian Eyenga again. I nearly swallowed my own tongue when that happened. In Eyenga’s defense, he did average nearly 4 points per game in Europe last season.
-I’m still burned that the Cavs didn’t trade and get Ty Lawson. I lusted after him for a solid two years, and on draft day the pick was rumored to be available. And Kahn traded him to a contender on draft day. I am never right about anything, and when I am it just makes me more miserable.
-Every year there’s talk about Gilbert “buying draft picks,” and it never seems to happen. Until there’s concrete news that the Cavs are getting a pick, I will assume they do not have one. I advise the rest of you to do the same.
-I can’t shake the feeling that if the Cavs had a second-round pick, they would have used it on Maverick Carter.
-IF LEBRON REALLY HAD KILLER INSTINCTZ, HE WOULD BUY A MID-20s PICK WITH HIS NIKE MONEY, DRAFT JORDAN CRAWFORD, AND DUNK ON HIM IN PRACTICE EVERY DAY UNTIL CRAWFORD CRIED AND SAW DEAD CLOWNS WHENEVER HE CLOSED HIS EYES. THEN LEBRON SHOULD HAVE MADE CRAWFORD WATCH THE TAPES BEFORE DESTROYING THEM. BY EATING THEM. #sarcasm
– Seriously, though, it would be kind of hilarious if ESPN just put “TAPE NOT FOUND” instead of Crawford’s highlights when he gets drafted.
-Draft stuff: Only Turner and Wall are locks, and both of them will need the right system to excel in. (Especially Turner.) Cousins will put up solid numbers his first few years, but I don’t know if he does enough without the ball in his hands or defensively to be the starting four on a legit playoff team. Not a Faroq-Aminu guy at all.
-If Sam Presti hadn’t picked Harden over Curry and traded French Rondo for B.J. Mullens, I would fully bow to him as the basketball Billy Beane. But he did both of those things, and now OKC doesn’t have an epic backcourt. The Beaubois/Mullens thing really stings. Everyone knew that was a terrible trade except for one of the best GMs in the league.
-Name of The Draft: Tiny Gallon.
-Probably the most important thing: If the Nets do go with Wes Johnson, that means they’ve officially given up on LeBron, right? I know I’ve said this before, but the CP3 rumor thing got me thinking about it again. For a while there, I really thought they’d snag Wall and become the front-runners.
That’s about all I have for tonight. Possible comment section discussion topic: how do you plan on making the draft interesting for yourself?

The draft is always interesting to me for some reason. I guess I like fantasizing about different combinations of players that may work well together due to age/skills/roles. I always like to see a team pick a player who looks like a great fit for them (unless it is a team I absolutely hate like the Spurs or Lakers). And bad-fitting picks irritate me (Flynn and Rubio? really Kahn?). John, I’m with you on Cousins and Aminu. I just cannot imagine Cousins’ career turning out much differently than Eddy Curry’s. They are basically the same player, no? Aminu I don’t… Read more »
All I know is everyone was talking about how last year’s draft class was crap, and there turned out to be a good amount of solid players. Just because there’s only one or two potentially transcendent guys doesn’t mean a draft is a bust. If there were 10 more John Walls, he wouldn’t be so special.
Pacers do need PG help, so maybe they would be interested in Mo, but in no way is he worth the 10th pick in the draft, and the Pacers have no other tradeable assets other than Granger, who will never be traded. And I don’t know why the Thunder would want Mo, they have Russell Westbrook (stud) and Eric Maynor (solid young backup). Please explain why they would want Mo
And Keith, Kobe just had finger surgery, so he isn’t working on his game right now.
or to get rid of him and save some money to spend somewhere else.
hows this? Mo to pacers for #10, 10, delonte + Jamison to NO for Paul. Then Parker, moon, boobie, and powe for Bosh.
add a split mid level exception and 2 bi-annual ones and you have this for a lineup
PG Chris Paul SG who cares SF Lebron PF Bosh C Z 6th man Varejao and 3 players to be added. thats a championship caliber team.
never happen in a million years. but i wish it would
Is there any real idea that Xavier Henry is going to be a better player than Mo Williams? No way of knowing IMO and just not worth the risk. That’s my point about trading him just to trade him. Unless you have an obvious upgrade, don’t do it just because we feel the need that we have to make a move.
The Jordan Crawford smak is GREAT!! Although he’s going to be a good NBA player sooner rather than later.
the only problem with Mo is his defense. And his disappearing act in the playoffs. Honestly I dont think that we would get much more for him than the 18. I mean we may be able to get a player from them because of cook. maybe Thabo Sefolosha, Harden, or maynor. ok the last two probably not but Thabo is a very good defender and capable of starting. Or how about Mo to the pacers for the 10 spot? they are looking for a point guard anyway, and getting a lottery player here would not be bad. I mean would… Read more »
People are so down on this draft and I just think it’s better than people give it credit for. I’m a huge Bledsoe fan and I think he has Russel Westbrook written all over him. I think the draft is a really solid 10-12 quality players deep, and some guys who I think can make an impact that will go late too (Greivous Vasquez).
There is no way Cousins can’t be a starting 4 or 5 in this league, especially with what I see around the league. I mean, Rashard Lewis can literally do one thing well, and that is it. Cousins can do one thing well, and is just a bigger body, he can play at the 4 (I actually like him at the 5…Center’s body needs to play center position). There is no way I’m trading Mo Williams, a proven scorer and 3pt shooter in this league, for the 18th pick and a crap shoot. I would have to believe if the… Read more »
We need to get some draft picks…somehow someway…and not draft ridiculous players no one has heard of…like Eyenga last year…wtf was that? that deal with OKC mentioned above could be good and the Kings one may work but who knows…theres really only 3-4 great guys in the draft Wall Turner Favors and Johnson….after that its a wash to me…
I wonder where Hayward from Butler will go? Havent heard much about him since he declared for draft
I used to work University of Oklahoma games when Tiny Gallon played…that guy is big and lazy…he’ll be a bust
Back on to basketball topics… The thunder just grabbed the 18th pick, and daequan cook for the 32nd pick. yes that actually happened. They now have 3 picks in the first round and want 2 things, a 3-point shooter and a serviceable big. We have PLENTY of shooters (Gibson, Parker, Mo) and can easily part with one. I think that if we traded mo for the 18 or parker for a later one that would be amazing. There are a lot of bigs available there. or Jordan Crawford who many say is a sleeper. I honestly think that it would… Read more »
I hope one days these people who are clamoring for something like killer instinct actually meet a killer and see how flawed it is to refer to basketball players in this way. There’s a pretty big different between someone who is willing to strip the flesh from your miserable bones and someone who puts a ball through a net.
Keith has a feeling about people he does not know. WOW! Keith, I hope Lebron realizes that Cleveland just doesn’t it and leaves. (it being the ability to build a real team)
I have the feeling the Kobe is already working on his game this summer. Meanwhile LeBron, who is more concerned about attention and being a celebrity than winning, is vacationing. I hope he stays, and works hard to finish what he started, but I realize he just might not have it in him. (it being the Jordan/Kobe killer instinct)
Don’t the Cavs HAVE to make some noise tonight? If the Kings were serious about Mo Williams in any way shape or form for the #5 pick, the Cavs should try and buy two 1st rd draft picks, and trade Mo and the two mid/late 1st round picks for the #5 pick and take back a bad contract. Cousins is a risk, but it gives them a trade asset, a young talent if LeBron leaves, or maybe he even succeeds under his wing if LeBron stays. Maybe, just maybe, you can even get in this prying Chris Paul game from… Read more »
