Recap: Cleveland 105, Memphis 91 (or the day Dion Waiters chased all the Grizzlies out of Cleveland)
2014-12-22Electricity was included in the rent at my first apartment. Out of sheer curiosity, one day before leaving for work, I turned both the air-conditioner (Grizzlies) and heater (Cavs) on full-blast to see which would win in an epic battle of American waste. When I returned hours later, I saw that the matchup ended in a draw, as I fuse had blown. To some stories, there is no moral. The moral of tonights game is that the Cavs are a pretty good team when ball movement flows like wee into the urinals at Great Lakes Brewery and that Memphis isn’t so grizzly without Zach Randolph and Tony Allen in the lineup.
First Quarter: Kyrie Irving scored the first points of the game off of a 25-foot three. The Grizzlies appeared sluggish out of the gate after playing three overtime games in their past five contests. The Cavs raced to an 18-4 lead seven minutes in, primarily off of aggressive defense, stellar off-ball movement by Andy and charitable passing by LeBron. Nine of the Cavaliers 10 first quarter field goals were assisted. The Grizzlies cut into the Cavs lead with a 9-0 run to end the quarter and a Nick Calathes near buzzer beating 27-foot three was waived off. LeBron tallied 6 assists in the period and Varejao scored 8 of the Cavaliers 22 points. 22-19 Cavs
Second Quarter: Irving ended the Cavs three-plus minute scoring drought by draining a 19-footer jumper and Waiters followed suit with a rainbow baseline jump shot of his own 26 seconds later. The arch of Waiters jumper has to be one of the highest in the league. Shawn Marion scored a pair of assisted layups on back-to-back possessions. Waiters steered through three defenders for a driving layup. Irving kissed a scoop off the backboard through a Beno Udrich foul. And none, as Kyrie missed the freebie. The Cavaliers offensive came to life and they built a 34-25 lead midway through the quarter. Andy’s free-lancing on defense and his notable decline in quickness led to a Marc Gasol slam off of a Leuer assist. With just under three minutes remaining in the half, LeBron fed Dion on a baseline drive. A minute later, LeBron drilled a 26-foot three off of a Love dish. On the next possession LeBron burned Quincy Pondexter off the dribble for a cue the unpaid intern to pull the string on Austin Carr’s back “throw the hammer down” slam. LeBron beat Pondexter again off the dribble in the closing seconds of the half and drew a foul with half of a second remaining. He split the pair. 52-41 Cavs
Third Quarter: The third quarter started uneventfully until Kyrie crossed Mike Conley over and founds LeBron on the weak side for an oop lay up. On the following possession, Andy hit a buzzer beating hook off of a James dime. After a slow start, Jon Leuer went 4-4 in the quarter. Marc Gasol beat the Cavaliers front court with a switch through the first three quarters — like Père Fouettard flogs naughty French children — to the tune of 23 points and 10 boards. Delly found Marion in the corner for a hideous three-pointer with four seconds remaining in the quarter. 77-70 Cavs
Fourth Quarter: The teams traded baskets to open the final frame. Dion fed LeBron from 30-feet away on a two handed oop. After starting the quarter 1-4 with a pair of turnovers, Dion caught fire hitting four of his next six shots to cap off a 13 point quarter. His effort was shown on the defensive end as well, as he chased down Beno Udrich for a steal with two-minutes remaining with a firm 16 point lead in hand. FINAL SCORE: 105-91 Cavs
BOO
LeBron James had three showboating turnovers tonight. It seems that he throws away at least two possessions per game with no look passes…Anderson Varejao played 19 minutes in the first half. I dig that he was finding holes in the Grizzlies defense for easy baskets, but controlling his minutes is a major issue for me this season. He didn’t log a second in the fourth quarter because the game was firmly in hand. Maybe I’m being a worry wart, but Andy should never play 27 minutes in the first three quarters in a non-playoff game and Tristan Thompson should never play only four minutes in the first half of a game…Kevin Love attempted only nine shots all game and zilch from downtown. Keeping him consistently engaged in the offense is another sticking point for me. Perhaps if Zebo would have played, Love would have been more involved to draw a bully out of the paint pulpit. I dunno. Either way, I want him more involved in the offense.
YAY
LeBron James had 25 points on 9-15 shooting along with eleven dimes as he steered the offense. He went 3-5 from deep in the Q (cue the intern) with solid effort on defense throughout the game…Dion Waiters followed his seven minute outing against Brooklyn with a strong performance. Dion erupted with 21 points on 9-16 shooting off the bench. My own sentimental attachments to him aside, this team needs his offense off the bench and as Kyrie injury insurance…Kyrie Irving was sensational tonight. He tied his career high in assists with 12 and had only two turnovers. His shooting slump appears to be over as he shot an efficient 8-13 from the field. His effort was felt on defense holding Conley to just 11 points. My favorite play of his tonight was when he hustled to tip a Mike Miller miss back to the good guys and it led to a Varejao jumper. I feared for a long time that he was a modern day Marbury. I don’t feel that way anymore. Anderson Varejao and Shawn Marion were amazing off the ball. Both converted on the defensive attention that Irving and James drew and they shot a ridiculous 14-18 from the field. If I had one wish, that I could wish this holiday season, it would to be that all of the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace. If I had two wishes, that I could make this holiday season, it would be for $30 million to be given to me, tax-free in a Swiss bank account. If I had three wishes to make this holiday season, it would be for Joe Harris, Mike Miller or Ray Allen to be in the starting lineup along with Thompson and Special K and for a second unit featuring Waiters, Andy and Marion to terrorize bench squads across the league.
So will Bennett be tonight’s scrub-fuego?
I’d put my money on Mo Williams
One wish for tonight, well two. We win and that nobody says “we screwed up by trading Wiggins and Bennett”. We all wanted to keep Wiggins but I know I have no clue what the trade talks were like and what Griffin was up against. Go Cavs!
We didn’t screw up by trading for Kevin Love. That’s a trade you make 100 x out of 100. Anyone who says otherwise is a madman.
I concur but comments like that have been known to surface on here. Enjoy the game
i just gotta say having watched the whole game yesterday, kevin love’s defense (by comparison to his normal matador style) was sensational last night. He got called for one foul I recall was clearly a clean block, and overall he really committed hard to getting those hands up. He still turned away from a few shooters to go for the rebound instead of contesting, but he is doing that less than he was at the start of the season. His personal improvement on defense will go along way toward getting us out of the 2nd round of the playoffs without… Read more »
What’s wrong with going seven games? Look how many series the Spurs play that go 6-7, and they still won it all multiple times.
Look how many times they got bounced in the early rounds.
don’t worry. we won’t go seven games in the East.
Pistons just waived Josh Smith. Anybody interested?
Um. Kind of. This team might have enough vets to reign him in and you wouldn’t have to pay him too much, so of he’s a three point shooting jackhole you can just waive him. Once he clears waivers whatever he signs for is reduced for Detroit’s payroll right? No one is touching him for $13 a year. I think he ends up in Houston but that’s just me throwing pickles against the window and seeing if it will stick.
Nooooooo!!!! Please God no! He is just a bigger, more annoying Dion on offense.
It’s looking like it’s down to Dallas, Houston, and Miami.
If the Cavs didn’t already have the Matrix, Josh might be more interesting. Man, i can still remember early in his Hawks career where some media extremists believed his ceiling could have been up there with LBJ. Josh just never did have the mental makeup to be a true difference maker, even though he’s got tremendous physicality.
He makes most sense for Houston, maybe Dallas. Don’t see how he’d want to go to the Heat.
Playing time. If he has a big year, he could get a big contract.
He’s already made a ton of money on the last two contracts though. You’d think at this point, he’d be more interested in maybe getting a shot at a ring with a Dallas or Houston.
I do not begin to understand what goes on in the minds of NBA players. Honestly, I’d have a hard time not saying “ok, if I play this right, I could turn this into another $30-$40 million.” I mean look at ‘Melo. Did he honestly think he had a shot at anything if he re-signed with the Knicks? But he took the extra dough and paid lip service to “winning.” He’s either deluded and stupid, or greedy and cynical. Probably some combination of the above. And I don’t even blame him, I just hated the dishonesty of it all. So… Read more »
Is it really greedy too want more money. Its not like he’s stealing or robbing someone. Sure he acted like it wasn’t all about the money and that was a lie, buts not wrong to want to get paid what your worth. And is winning a silly championship in an entertaiment industry such a virtue that one is obligated to forgo it to win? It’s not greed to want to earn what you deserve. And Carmelo Anthony is one of the very best entertainers in the world.
Rather have Josh Harrellson
Dion really was the player last night, that we were all hoping he would be when the season started. He rightfully got the minutes that were going to Delly in previous games. Not that I want to see Delly’s minutes get diminished, but Dion was a force last night. One thing I’ve noticed about Dion: he’s so much better at stepping into his jumpers than stepping back. That’s why working on catch-and-shoot jumpers was so important for him. Also, some of his finishes last night were really crafty. Was really nice to see Andy rekindle the fire. Can he play… Read more »
We need depth at big-man. What happens if Andy gets hurt and has to miss more than a game or two?
Game by game the offense is gelling. I think this team is going to be something to see in March and April.
Sean Marion has the most ridiculous outside flip set-shot. Except that it is never blocked and goes in a lot. Amazing.
Super game by Dion. That’s our boy!
Oh, Agreed. Mozgov would be my choice at this point.
Denver doesn’t seem to be in any rush to make part with him. I wonder if Pelicans would part with Withey for a pick or two. He’s not great on offense, but more than capaable defensively, and they would keep Dion to boot.
Yeah, not a bad call.
Yeah, I really wanted Brewer for a variety of reasons. Doesn’t seem like it took the Rockets giving up a whole lot to get him. My theory is that Flip didn’t want to help ensure KLove does any better than he has to in Cleveland and trading Brewer to the Cavs would probably help KLove as much as anyone.
Eh. I read it differently. Taylors seemed willing to send Brewer wherever he wanted to go, but Cavs didn’t want to give up anything to get him. They had little in the way of second rounders and didn’t seem to want to use the Bogans exception, so he took the next best offer. You have to think there’s more opportunity in Cleveland than in Houston with that roster (which is constantly becoming more packed).
Why do you think they didn’t want to use the Bogans Exception? Also, didn’t they get an extra second rounder for either the Utah deal or the Boston deal (I could be wrong, I’m asking)?
http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ssf/2014/12/terrys_talkin_about_the_clevel_30.html Cavs General Manager David Griffin did not seriously consider trading for Corey Brewer. He wanted to hang on to his $5.3 million trade exception. A major problem was Minnesota wanting two upper level second-round picks. The Cavs didn’t have those. Nor were the Cavs willing to trade their future first-round pick (protected and belonging to Memphis)… Griffin has decided to wait, his goal being to add another big man — one who can block some shots and rebound. The trading deadline is February 19, and there may be some big men available close to the deadline. If Griffin had… Read more »
Thanks for clarifying Nate. In the grand scheme of things, this team could definitely use an interior, defensive minded big man over a perimeter 3 and D guy like Brewer.
I’m glad I’m not a GM. It must be tough to keep all of these cap rules and economics straight and not mistakenly handcuff your organization.
Brewer’s not even much of a 3 guy.
Also Marion and Brewer are the same player. Brewer is slightly better but it’s not worth that much for a tiny upgrade. A big that can actually defend the paint is a much bigger need then getting another athletic wing that is barely passable as 3 point shooter.
OK there is a perfume named after Père Fouettard and it’s made by a company called “Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab”
People are the best.

Enjoyed the recap, Cory, although the one thing I thought you missed on the KLove front was his improved D in this game. It almost seemed like he was focused more on defense than offense today so he took less shots but was a more tenacious defender, contesting shots and even had another block. Nice to see the Cavs move the ball so well and shoot so well. Obviously, the Griz weren’t completely themselves (especially defensively) without Z-Bo and TA, but this was the first time since 2010 (LBJ and Mo W) that the Cavs had two guys with 10+… Read more »
He had a plus +18 with only 8 points and 8 or 9 boards I wanna say. I really do want him more involved.
He seemed more involved in the first half offensively. I noticed a couple of times that both LBJ and Dion could have kicked a pass to him when he was open in the second half, but both of those guys were hitting their shots and had good looks on said plays. I also find that KLove looks to pass more than shoot sometimes later in games. You can almost see his lips move to recite the “pass up a good shot for a great one” mantra. Agree would like to see him take more shots sometimes.
Maybe you should wish for the bench mauling first, because it could all go boom tomorrow and then what do you got?
Excellent recap.
Why wish it to be tax free in a Swiss bank account? Just wish yourselft $50 million in your bank and pay taxes on it. No reason to be shady.
Yeah. Sounded like they played well. I missed the game Mike miller starting and ray Allen off the bench sounds good to me too.
Because that’s the way Steve Martin told the joke on SNL all those years ago. Great pull Corey!
i suck suck suck
As a practicing Catholic that celebrates St. Nicholas day, I’m ashamed I’d never heard of Père Fouettard.
I’m not very cultured – so thanks for adding to my knowledge base, Cory.
Seems at some point, Santa Claus assumed the dual mandate of St. Nick and Père Fouettard’s. But of course, humans got soft and replaced a child abuser with a poor gift giver.
Of course today, giving children coal would hurt their self-esteem too much. :)
Freaking awesome recap my man. I can’t get this visual of an intern pulling a string in AC’s back out of my mind.
Thanks guy.I definitely won’t have a date in-between the game and trying to transcribe my shitty notes at
6AM next time.
I too as a practicing Catholic who also celebrates Nick’s feast was also ignorant of this. I am going to sue my Catholic schools for mal-practice. This is a travesty
I’m going to use this reference in the future and act like I knew it all along
