Not a Recap: Cavs 97, 76ers 84 (Or, Heat Check Lineups and D3LLY Dagg3rs)
2015-02-03Nate and Cory attended this game – and I think they’re still at the Horseshoe. So expect a more thorough recap tomorrow. In the meantime I’ll offer my thoughts for you to sound off. Here are 11 quick takes – Lloydian style – in honor of the 11-game winning streak.
1.) This was one of the sloppier games the Cavs have played in a while. They continue to throw bounce passes into heavy leg-traffic. They also go for the touchdown pass a LOT. I think they collectively missed about six alley-oops tonight.
2.) Tonight was a nice win because LeBron and KLove really struggled shooting the ball. They combined to go 7-24. For all the talk about the Cavs not getting Love involved in the offense or “using him properly” – I’ve seen so many occasions this year where he spots up on the perimeter, receives the ball, and then swings it around to someone that’s not spotted up. Tonight he passed up a perfectly wide-open 3 to give the ball to poor Delly, who had to make something happen with time running down on the clock. Love wasn’t the only guy to do this to SuperDova.
3.) Kyrie Irving really took over in the 4th quarter. When he starts building confidence offensively, he is ridiculous. Which each passing day I feel like more of an idiot for saying he wasn’t worth a max contract. I mean guys know what he is capable of – he’s not sneaking up on anyone. And yet, he continues to blow my mind with how well he gets into the paint without the transcendent athleticism of someone like Westbrook. Is there a guy in the NBA that has more control over the ball, his body, and his defender’s body than Kyrie Irving? Maybe Chris Paul – but CP3 doesn’t finish like Kyrie. Magnum KI has established himself as the best finishing guard in the NBA (according to my eye test). Also, that crossover and left-handed finish tonight was just filthy.
4.) I don’t claim to have 10 games going at once on a CIA-like big screen in my home. I’ve only seen the 76ers play two other times this season. I had no idea who half of these guys were. Some of the names I recognized, but almost none of the faces. Most of them have the same trendy buzzcut that looks like their kid brother punked them in their sleep. At any rate, they are athletic and scrappy as hell. It’s no fluke they almost took down the Hawks the other night. They really took it to David Blatt’s “Heat Check” lineup (that’s a lineup without any combination of LeBron/KI/KLove) and when the Cavs top dogs came back in the 76ers acted like they didn’t notice any difference. Started jacking (and making!) a bunch of YOLO 3s.
5.) Iman Shumpert went 4/4 with 2 steals. He’s still a mess when he puts the ball on the floor but he’s got a nice arc on his shot. Between Shumpert, Earl Smith III, Delly, and Kyrie, the Cavs have greatly improved their ability to help and recover around the perimeter. Their team defense has improved by leaps and bounds since the additions of Mozgov and Smith, and Shumpert is adding to that. Delly doesn’t seem as effective this year in single coverage but he’s still closing out on shooters very well. Kyrie’s defense has improved 10fold this season. Effort, anticipation, recovery – he’s a completely different player at that end. The Cavs have really been playing stout D the last few weeks.
6.) Delly has become a lightning rod these days. He’s got his share of haters this season. I’ll admit I have been disappointed at times (thought he was better defensively last year) but I don’t see what all the fuss is about. He’s a smart player. He always knows the situation on the court and makes heady plays. Once again he fouled in the open court tonight knowing he had a foul to give to bring a 76ers fast break to a screeching halt. He does stuff like this every game. I think Blatt trusts him in big moments more than a lot of the fan base. The thing is, it’s going to be hard for Delly to impress anyone because for the Cavs to be playing optimal basketball, Delly shouldn’t be shooting, and he probably shouldn’t be racking up assists either. His role on offense is to get rid of the ball when he gets it, move to the open spaces, space the floor, and convert enough 3-pointers to keep the defense honest. And he’s done that. Tonight he coupled some heady plays with a bunch of ugly offensive possessions. And on none of them did he have any desire to score. There was a play where the offense stalled and LeBron swung it to Delly to reset with about 8 seconds left. Delly got a high screen from noted non-floor spacer Tristan Thompson. He drove right, hoping someone (ANYONE) would cut off ball or move to an open spot so he could drive and kick. LeBron sat 5 feet behind the line with a guy shadowing him and didn’t move one bit. Nor did anyone else. So he kept his dribble and threw up an awkward brick. (I’m pretty sure the picture I chose for the heading is the play in question) There were about two more possessions like that in the game. Fans were outraged that Blatt kept him in as long as he did. And it wasn’t like Delly was playing Grindfather defense at the other end. Well, with the Cavs struggling to get their engines firing in the 4the quarter, Delly hit not one, not two, but three 3s. The second one being the dagger in my opinion. He gets burn because he wins possessions, spaces the floor, hits 3s, and always defers to the stars on the team. In crunch time, that’s what you want.
7.) Rough game offensively for Mozzy although he did swat five shots. At the other end the 76ers had 23 combined Steals+Blocks. That’s an athletic team. Marion looked “fork-in-back” done again. Of course he looked a decade younger last week, so maybe he’ll be springy again soon.
8.) David Blatt was prioritizing rest tonight. He admitted he didn’t handle the 3rd quarter particularly well, but the Cavs are starting to increase their margin for error. Other than the Portland game and a few moments in the Clippers game, there haven’t been many moments during this win streak when I thought the Cavs were in dangers of losing. They have a different air about them. They’re finding ways to win and even as teams seem to get up for playing against LeBron and his “Big 3”, the Cavs are absorbing the body blows and landing these 4th quarter knockout punches.
9.) Once again Kevin Love couldn’t hit a shot but played well in other facets of the game. I apologize for referring to him as a “poor man’s Spencer Hawes” (AMERICAN PATRIOT) earlier this year – it was partially in jest. He had some man’s-man rebounds and his usual assortment of fun deep-ball outlets. He led everyone in +/-.
10.) I loved LeBron’s post game comments. He’s right, the Cavs haven’t won anything. Stay hungry my friend.
11.) The Cavs finally made up a game on the Hawks! The revenge tour continues! Depending on who you talk to, the win streak is being partially fueled by Urban Meyer’s speech or someone from C:TB attending games in the flesh. Of course some would say they’re 11-0 since going bowling. But I think we all know the real reason the Cavs are undefeated since January 13. Because Frank Caliendo did his Charles Barkley impression in the locker room after that blown loss to the Suns. It’s been uphill since!
Frank Caliendo is visiting the Cavs postgame locker room. His Kiper Jr. impression slays me every time.

On another note, Amundson has been starting for the Knicks over Stoudemire. Played 35 minutes so far tonight. Scored six points.
92.3 the Fan is a little late to the Mosgov nickname game. The Mosgov Mule…
Is that station any good?
It’s not amazing or anything, but I listen to it (on my Radio.com app) from time to time to get a break from LA sports radio. It’s good to at least get a bit of good Cleveland sports bias…
It’s decent. They talk more Browns than other sports (like most sports talk shows in CLE). They aren’t as knowledgable about basketball, however they do interview a lot of experts.
Yeah, I like it when they have Jason Lloyd on or one of the other Cavs reporters…
They’re actually talking a lot of Cavs today.
I did hear Andy Baskin ripping the Sporting News (I think that’s what it was anyway) about stirring up the KLove drama after his low shooting last night…
I Enjoy The Really Big Show. Though I don’t think it’s as funny since Goldhammer left.
I think Bull and Fox is better on the Fan. The RBS was funny at times, especially when Rizzo blew a fuse. I just can’t stand listening to a JoeBees infomercial for 4 hours.
You guys should jump on the air. I’ve heard some WFNY bloggers on the Fan.
Tom does Radio in Dayton once a week (he posts some of them here), and I’ve actually been on Hawaiian radio twice as the guy from CavsTheBlog (don’t ask why they called me).
You need to get on Alaskan radio – aren’t they bball fanatics?

Yeah Blatt should definitely install hack-a-jordan game plan again. Bring in Haywood just to foul Jordan.
I think he only will if he needs to break up the Clips momentum. I was at the game in LA and you could feel the energy of the game getting away from the Cavs at the time that Blatt wen to the Hack-A-DJ… The crowd hated it, but it worked to slow the Clips down and get them out of rhythm (that and Doc’s ill-fated decision to play his kid…)
Seriously don’t know why he doesn’t get someone to teach him granny style if he get get his percentage up.
I once saw one of the Berry boys quip that their dad’s open offer to anyone wanting to learn the craft was free of charge. Nobody has taken him up sadly. Bringing it back for Drummond could be the factor that makes detroit at an 8 dangerous to the hawks. nobody will catch the hawks but imagine a 66-75% free throw shooting drummond in the playoffs
An unprecedented 2 days off and the next game is at home vs Clips. Prediction: Kia goes off and punches/elbows Love in the nose forcing him to wear a mask. His offense is born again under the mask.
I could see Blake doing that too. I went to the Cavs/Clips game last year and Griffin nearly tackled AV, who was laughing at him the entire time.
Andy’s annoyance of griffin is one of my favorite things to think about. Griffin and Tim Duncan are my favorite players that Andy made mad.
I loved how much Andy annoyed Dirk back in the day, too. My favorite though, is the Andy/Kevin Garnett wars. It all stems back to my favorite Andy clip ever. Maybe I dreamed it. But during his first or second year with the Cavs, Andy had a play where he stole the ball from Garnett, outraced him, went behind the back, and then dunked from the left side and was fouled for an and1. I wish I could find this clip, but I think it happened in the year 1BYT (before Youtube). I believe it happened in Minnesota.
I love the comments here today, guys!
Definitely think something is going on mentally with Love, but, as he’s acknowledged, he’ll keep doing what’s asked of him to succeed. Which, so far, has lead to an 11 game win streak. Not too shabby, right?
Big test is Thurs. Cavs win that, I think the streak goes to at least 14.
Clips will be tough and looking for a win after the debacle against the Nets last night, but I think the Cavs get up for this game and keep it rolling. The potential stumble is the next night against the Pacers in Indy. If they can get through this back-to-back, it should be only the Bulls game that stands between them and a sweet 16 pre-ASB…
The Pacers suck though.
Brilliant insight as usual Cols…
Not saying they’re going to lose to the Pacers, just saying it’s a game they could overlook. Pacers still play tough D (still the sixth ranked scoring D) and rebound well. It’s in Indy on the second night of a back to back, while the Pacers will be rested at the end of a home stand…
It is good to see you commenting Mallory. I hope that all is well for you considering you seem to have many things going on so the tradeoff is less commenting.
Love might have a mental adjustment but I do think winning will take care of it long term. Especially when the playoffs start and Lebron decides to turn it up on both ends of the court. That kind of enthusiasm will be contagious for Love and whatever mental block he might have.
I LOVED how J.R. Smith reacted to Delly’s success. Iman and J.R. rode the pine in favor of Delly and all they did was show complete support. J.R. continued his smiling and good cheer, going out of his way to congratulate Delly during the TO. Great to see. The 76ers are indeed scrappy. They foul the other team to death and put the onus on the refs to blow the whistle. It is no coincidence as Brett Brown was a Spurs coach during the Bruce Bowen years. If you foul on every single play, you establish a level of physicality… Read more »
The Sixers have definitely been playing better ball of late and seem to be out of the full-on tank-a-palooza mode they’ve been in for the last couple of years… Definitely feels like the EC is getting an infusion of good coaches and talent that is helping to close the gap on the WC this year. Would be nice to have more perceived balance between the conferences someday…
Hard to tank in the east. So much competition. Brooklyn is in fire sale mode and they are only 1.5 games out.
And yet they still beat the Clips last night… Their owner might be tanking, but their players are not…
The only truly terrible team in the EC is the Knicks right now…
-Delly reminds me of a quarterback who is running play action or read option plays. When he takes the high pick and goes to his right into the paint, he repeats the motion exactly the same up until he throws up his little floater or tosses a lob. It’s vert exact every single time and so hard to predict. -Iman and Delly are also learning how to help out in the paint more. They are no longer exactly following their man around the court. They’re deliberate when they sag off and are usually doing so to knock off a roll… Read more »
I dont think griffin needs a backup PG as much as a utility big to get an extra 10-15 minutes when if TT and Mozgov get into foul trouble. hopefully they wont foul at the same rate because a Love at center and LBJ at 4 sounds like a disaster.
Seems like from his post game comments that Love doesn’t feel quite right in Blatt’s system yet (“doing what’s asked of me”). He’s still playing well in other areas of the game.
Every championship team has had scrappers like Delly on it. He’s a guy that could go Daniel Gibson 2007 in the Finals. Hopefully without the complete fall off afterward.
I think anyone who has been crititcal of delly in the past would gladly have tonight’s delly on their team. He was tremendous. The criticisms of him this season have been rooted in the very long stretch of games in which he shot terribly from the field. This allowed defenses to ignore him, which led to spacing issues that affected the whole offense. If he can knock down open 3s, though, that issue goes away, and everyone would agree that he is valuable.
Yes. This x 100
That’s just it though… the criticisms have been of his offensive ability and his shots not falling. He’s still doing all of the little things to help this team win that he was doing when his shot was not falling… Most of the Delly critics are people in love with stat sheets and scoring…
I watch every game. I love the little things Delly does. By no means do I think the stat sheet captures every important aspect of performance.
But the little things by themselves are not enough to overcome shooting 25% from the field, and forcing your team to play 4 on 5 on offense. That is why Aaron Kraft is not in the NBA. That is why if Delly can knock down open shots, he is very valuable. If he doesn’t, he becomes a net drag.
I’d be fine if he never took a shot… I’d rather he’d continue to make the right pass, play gritty D, grab tough rebounds in traffic and do the little things to keep possessions alive… any shots he hits are gravy. The only thing I’d feel the need to criticize about him are the handful of times he tries to make a play for himself on the drive because that’s his worst ability, but he usually is only doing that if the shot clock is running down and there are no other options…
If he doesn’t take a shot then he’s a very very very very poor man’s Kendrick Perkins. Do no want. Delly is only valuable is he is able to hit his open threes. If not, well we need someone else.
So it’s really helping the team that he’s figured out how to shoot lately.
How is he Kendrick Perkins??
And I doubt you’d rather have Delly take a shot over LBJ, Kyrie, Love, JR, or maybe even Shump or Moz…
I agree that it’s great that he’s hitting spot up threes lately… but like I said, that’s gravy…
Agreed but there is a slight difference here. Delly isn’t shooting well at all from the field – but he’s making 40+% of his 3s (and it’s not like he’s averaging 0.1 3s per game). The effect (in my opinion) is that teams have to respect him spotting up. Even if all you have to do is run him off the line because he can’t create much offense on his own, he still has “gravity” (that’s what the cool kids are calling it these days). So this isn’t an Eric Snow situation where he’d camp out 15 feet from the… Read more »
Yep. Aaron Craft sucks at everything except for defense in college. But Delly actually making his spot up threes is extremely important. If he couldn’t then he would be out of the league pretty quickly. Good on Blatt for having patience. I would’ve cut him earlier when he sucked.
Sucking sucks. It really sucks. Any suckers who like sucky players really suck too. It sucks that so many suckers like players who suck. Sucky, sucky, sucky suck suck suck…. suck…
ha Aaron Craft. He’s down in Santa Cruz with our boy Carrick Felix averaging 8ppg 6.7 ast 2.33 steals 4.7 rebounds. probably right at home hounding D level guys on defense
http://stats.nbadleague.com/playerStats.html?PlayerID=203905
Craft can’t even shoot 16% from three in the D-League.
I can’t stand watching aaron craft play basketball. Just the worst.
How many times have you watched Aaron Craft play basketball this year? How many times since he finished his career at OSU?
Zero. But he made watching those Ohio State teams pretty difficult.
once again cols no where to be seen when delly has a good game.
Haha. That’s not really a thing. I was busy skiing, drinking, and not sleeping. Got 9 hours last night though. So. I”M BACK BABY!
Pretty terrific non-recap Tom! Definitely sloppy ball-handling game. At times it looked like the ball was made of either soap or ice whenever LBJ or Kyrie handled it. They do go for the TD pass a lot, but the one that KLove made was pretty awesome… This could have easily been a dangerous let down or “crap” game (as opposed to “trap game” since they have a couple days off to reflect on the win streak). They seemed to start out with a lot of energy, but that slowed in the second and evaporated in the third… This looked like… Read more »
I still think it’s too early to scoreboard watch. And really, does it matter what seed we get? This team is going to roll through the East. I guess it would be good to avoid the top two teams in the first round because of our lack of playoff experience, but after that I don’t think it matters.
It’s never too early to scoreboard watch as far as I’m concerned. Especially with the Cavs on their current roll. I take joy in watching them close the gap on the top four, and I’ll enjoy watching them pass (most likely) all but the Hawks. And by the way, it’s February… not December. Cavs have 32 games left and I intend to scoreboard watch from now on because I enjoy it…
And yeah, it does matter what seed they get… I know you have your supreme, irrational confidence to draw from, but I think the rest of us would like for this team to get at least the 3 seed or the 2. You correctly pointed out their lack of playoff experience (minus LBJ, JR and the geezer brigade), so why not get their feet wet with a home court advantage series against a team like the Bucks or Hornets instead of a knock-down, drag out with the Bulls where the winner gets a second-round trip to Atlanta? They’re eventually going… Read more »
I’d rather play the Bulls than the bucks in round one to be honest. We match up better with the bulls. Although sans Brandon knight the bucks aren’t as imposing. I would just rather not face them though. They are sneaky good and as long as the sixers with better defense.
That’s just straight up crazy talk… Bulls have SO many better weapons than the Bucks, and they have massive playoff experience (unlike the young Bucks).
Yes but their playoff experience is losing to good teams. They will also be worn down by the end of the year and jimmy butler will be ineffective in the playoffs. I don’t see them making it out of round 1 unless they get the 3 seed…which isn’t happening.
Please hit me up before the playoffs start so I can take some of your money if you want to bet on this…
And they will beat people up.
“but hey if you can’t try some stuff in a Groundhog Day tilt with a team that has less wins than your potential win streak… When can you?” – exactly.
Love it. If I had 11 thoughts to put down about the cavs people would stop reading halfway through…so kudos to you for keeping me invested through the calliendo reference, Tom. One thing I will say is delly’s three triples were definitely not “icing on the cake” as they are sometimes when he plays. He was no match for anyone of his match ups on defense tonight. This is the type of team against which shumpert will likely steal delly’s minutes. Uber athletic, lanky, quick cutting and high leaping. Delly saved what would have been a monumentally dissapointing 3 point… Read more »
Yes I’ve been impressed with the ways Love is helping this team win. You gotta assume he’ll get right and his shot will start falling again. If he can put it all together that gives this team another dimension.
Great comments Scotch! KLove is also the team leader in taken charges and its probably not close…
And how many other guys would stay and work on their jumper for an hour after the post game show? I Love the effort. The only thing more awesome than that would be if Nate stayed in his Love gamer to cheer KLove on during the extra session (or at least until security kicked him out…)
Great comment. Love doing all of the little things to win is huge, especially for a guy with no playoff experience. Same with Kyrie. But come playoff time, we are going to need KLove to space the floor and hit shots so he needs to get this fixed sooner rather than later. I applaud him for working on it after the game. Winner are made when no one is watching.
Love this comment. It’s spot on. Love’s +/- has been really good. Is there a way to see it averaged over the season and compared with other Cavs? As in the case of Delly, the casual basketball fan might be missing a remarkable body of work and criticizing unfairly.
Love has sacrificed number, his all-star bid, and all the positive media attention he normally gets in order to help the team win. Let’s give the man some credit.
I didn’t watch the post-game pressers. But the Delly stuff is amusing to the Cavs too. From Lloyd: 6. That left Dellavedova to play the entire quarter. Good thing, too. He scored 10 points in the fourth and went 3-for-4 on 3-pointers, including two in the final three minutes. His 3-pointer with 2:35 left was one of the biggest shots of the night and extended the Cavs’ lead to 91-83. 7. Don’t look now, but Delly is shooting the highest percentage on 3s of any Cavs player (42.4 percent). His assist-to-turnover ratio is better than 3 to 1. And he… Read more »
Loved what Blatt had to say about Delly… He’s 100% right
Yep. Delly looks goofy. That is about 95% of the reason people hate on the kid. His basketball IQ is ridiculously high. EVERY situation he gets right, whether it be 2 for 1 or the mentioned foul count. His Defense hasn’t been quite as solid onball this season, but he is guarding far more quick PGs that he had to last season. He still is huge on the glass, and still drills the roll man anytime he should. I am rarely as happy to see a three ball drop. Anytime he gets one to fall, I am thrilled. The basketball-star… Read more »
Anyone else think that Delly’s knee never quite fully healed from beginning of the year? He has looked less mobile on defense. Especially lateral quickness. Asb may be exactly what he needs…
It’s a good theory. He doesn’t look like the guy that shut down Brad Beal last year
It’s about time he started making some shots. His defense has been awful so we need him to shoot well in order to be an asset. I think they still try to upgrade that position but if he’s shooting threes at this level cf competency he deserves the playing time.
Cols was that you at the Cavs game last night drinking tall boys and almost brawling with Nate over Delly?
Looks like some oxygen got through the pot haze into Denver.
Agreed. People can hate on Delly, and if he ever plays more than 20 minutes, his lack of “skill” starts to show. But as an energy guard who can come in, disrupt opposing guards, play with energy, hit the occasional 3 pointer, and make good passes, there really are few things to hate about him. Again, as the last guy in your rotation, he’s great. And like others have mentioned, he impacts the game in multiple ways without scoring. The EPITOME of a great role player is someone that can affect the game without the ball. This roster is centered… Read more »
(I really suck at putting all of my thoughts in one post) I’m not saying Delly will ever sniff $10M per season, but if everyone remembers AV in his early years, the guy was flat out “not very good” on offense. He did all of the little things, though, like take charges, play with energy, rebound, etc. After Mike Brown was fired (the first time) and Byron Scott came to town, AV learned how to shoot (or maybe he always could but we had bad coaches?) and if not for injuries, could have (and should have) made back-to-back All-Star games.… Read more »
The recipe for staying in the league long-term, for a player like Delly, is as you described with AV. Give 100% energy and have a couple of above average skills. Then slowly develop other facets of your game. If he was chucking up shots Dion-style I would be calling for him to be waived. We have more than enough offense. As long as he can hit 3s and give us 10-20 high intensity minutes he is more than worth the tiny salary he is on. I would also 100% resign him at years end. Someone who can contribute to a… Read more »
