Podcast Episode 63: Wind(y)ing Down the (regular) Season

It’s an unfamiliar place we Cavs fans find ourselves — that’s right, looking past the regular season, and forward to the playoffs! We gathered our forces from around the globe for a podcast: David Wood and Ben Werth joined me to talk Cavs and basketball. As usual, the best stuff happened after we turned the microphone off, but the stuff we talked about before that was pretty good too. The biggest topic: the Windhorst/Simmons B.S. Report from Tuesday, but topics also included the upcoming playoffs, the rest of the regular season, and as always, beer. We can be found on the above link, on SoundCloud and iTunes.
Bs report was what is it aways was a whole lot of steaming BS.
wind “bag ” is just COVERING HIS A– likes he always does —creates a story / RUMOR then when he is hard pressed about it or it receives negative feedback he will retreat his statement —WHAT A FRIGGIN COWARD !!
I just heard Windhorst on Bruce Hooley via Podcast. On Bruce Hooley, Windhorst seemed to say (the following is paraphrasing) that his (Windhorst’s on Bill Don’t Lie) comments regarding LBJ calling plays was “old news” and that “everyone knows that star players call there own plays”, even giving some examples. However, listening to Bill Don’t Lie and hearing his remarks, it is fairly clear Windhorst was basically calling Blatt Lebron’s stooge and he was implying LBJ was running the show (LBJ was calling the plays and Blatt was mindlessly repeating). So Windhorst was being very disingenuous and really seemed to… Read more »
Now this…I completely agree with.
Totally agree that he seems to suck up to Simmons, has done it that every time I’ve heard him on that podcast. Simmons wants gossip, and Windhorst does his best to deliver.
Windy is like an auditor. He just gets under people’s skin. He’s getting smashed by some local radio hosts today.
Auditors are more correct than his recall. He needs to go back to the general ledger page. Good on the radio part!
Nate, Ben and David… thanks for the thoroughly entertaining podcast. Sort of a refreshing sorbet to cleanse the palate and get the stale taste out of my mouth from the BS on the Wind-cast.
By the way, Ben… are you a Shark or a Jet? (snap… snap… snap…)

wow that was a bona fide laser. our audience in physical chemistry i am sure are quite pleased or embarrassed. i am not sure which.
I like to think that ball grew wings and kept on going all the way up to heaven.
Worst first pick ever. Chris Grant sucks
This has to finally unseat Shved’s similarly heaven-bound shot for the reigning “Not Top 10 Plays” on SportsCenter…
Good stuff, podcasters!
Overall, I agree that the headlines magnified some small things from the BS report. However, there was an overall tone of disrespect in Windy’s little laughs that can’t be ignored. Still, I think it’s pretty awesome that BS devoted an entire podcast to the Cavs.
I’m going to say that this will be Lue’s only year as an assistant with the Cavs. With any luck he will get a head coaching job somewhere else.
i did noticed the snicker laughs but tried not to think about it because of the source. now if they happen to be right come this summer, then i can only hope that the cavs won the title to make up for the love exit. i hope lue gets a head coach job too. if only because the guy is super talented, clever. and i want to see him in denver or a team like that where he can do what guys like mark price and patrick ewing were unable to do early in their coaching experience. price of course… Read more »
The only thing I question about the BS/Windy podcast is the timing. None of this was fresh, yet somehow it sparked other talking heads (like Broussard) to reference this rehash of opinions to create a whole new set of tired reports about things like LBJ calling plays instead of Blatt and keeping the KLove is leaving rhetoric alive. I do think that (as others have mentioned) it’s weird that Windy repeatedly referenced private conversations he had with LBJ months ago, but somehow didn’t share at the time. Which begs questions like “why didn’t you report this back then?” “was it… Read more »
guilty here as well when it comes to falling for the infotainment news cycle. i highly doubt lebron really talks much to windy anymore. if i was a betting man, i would side with my wife’s gossip site that thinks once his kids became more involved with school they wanted to move back to akron to remake their own childhood experience. cant blame them at for as a parent. where the girls gossip site mentions his wife’s opportunity to run a business and return to her roots was probably a huge factor. i say this only because my wife unapologetically… Read more »
Re: the podcast, the issue is not the validity of any of the particular claims – I am sure some of what Windy says is partially accurate (although WAY overstated).
The issue is the Cavs are playing amazing ball, BS and Windy are supposed to be high-profile basketball analysts, and they literally spent ZERO time discussing the many different amazing basketball stories associated with the Cavs. Its depressing to me how nakedly BS and Windy are just looking to create profitable narratives and headlines rather than do actual analysis. I guess its par for course, but its still annoying.
Yes. The Cavs have been the best team in the NBA over the last few months with the very best offense and a good defense.
” BS and Windy are just looking to create profitable narratives and headlines rather than do actual analysis” Bingo! Said perfectly!
Honestly, I thought it was interesting, “how’d we get to where we are now?” standpoint. Human drama always outweighs stats. And you’re also choosing to focus on the parts you didn’t like. I mean, they spent a ton of time talking about Mozgov and how LeBron has never played with anyone like him, and how the whole season picked up when LeBron saw Mozzy in the hall. They also talked about how they’ve figured out how to use Kyrie and how unlike Wade, Kyrie’s a light’s out shooter from deep. I’m not trying to ride to their defense, but the… Read more »
I”m with Nate on this one. There were certainly aspects of their coverage that made me roll my eyes – particularly how Windy did seem like he had an axe to grind with Blatt – but I did enjoy some tidbits about the team that I hadn’t heard before. They did say some positive things that had me shaking my head too. Down the stretch, Windy was really pushing back against Simmons that if the Cavs make a deep run he thinks Love is going to really enjoy it and will want to come back. Windy consistently maintained that Love’s… Read more »
I don’t understand Simmons POV here. Does he not realize that the Cavs can offer him the most money and the best chance to win?
He talked about Revis but all NE had to do was pick up Revis’s option or offer the most money and he’d be back. The Cavs can do that.
Simmons basically thinks Love is totally unhappy in Cleveland and will leave regardless of money or chance to win. You can’t put a price on his happiness, and you can’t say that being the Alpha on his own team would be more or less important to Love than winning titles as third banana. NOT saying these are my own thoughts, just the thinking of why he would theoretically leave.
Here’s the thing though, he was the alpha dog in Minnesota and he couldn’t wait to get out.
Most money
Best chance to win
That combination has never been turned down
@Nate and @Ross – You are right that they did say some nice things. But the nice things were usually kind of backhanded compliments like, “Yeah, I thought Kyrie was totally selfish and things would be a disaster, but Kyrie has actually been pretty good.” Or “Yeah, that Mozgov deal looked terrible at the time, but it turns out Mozgov is not a complete stiff.” Essentially, their analysis of the Cavs always starts off with some (usually false) narrative that they have in their mind (Kyrie is selfish, Blatt is terrible, LBJ took HGH, Griffin panicked on the Mozgov deal),… Read more »
@Hot Sauce – I guess the difference in our perspectives is that I give them credit for coming around and changing their previously held notions. And Kyrie WAS totally selfish and had developed bad habits. He has learned to sublimate the strengths of his game within the team structure now. (Although, it is easier to do that when there is some semblance of a team structure.) It wasn’t that long ago on this blog that some were fed up with Kyrie, didn’t want the Cavs to offer him a max extension to his rookie deal, and wondered if Waiters was… Read more »
Simmons wants Love to sign with the Celtics. That’s it. He’s desperate to hear a storyline that makes that possible, even if he’s the one saying it.
Agree with Nate and Ross here as well. I thought Windy was being pretty reasonable throughout. He didn’t hype up the KLove drama and say Love is definitely gone or staying either way. In fact, he kinda puts some water on the media heat regarding the Love situation by basically saying, the point is that EVERYthing is in play, the rest is just speculation. Positive and negative stuff coming from all sides.
Also, on the way into work this morning I heard a caller on 92.3 call our favorite ESPN punching bag “Knackwurst,” which I found quite hilarious.
I forced myself to take another listen today because of Nate’s input. Ugh! They did rehash old bad news from the beginning of the season to burn time because let’s face it folks. CAVS ARE DOING GREAT!! True they did have some positive comments about Mosgov and JR but they sure as hell didn’t give any credit to Blatt for bringing the best out of them either. Former players of Blatt have repeatedly stated that he is a genius of getting the best out of every player on the team. It has been overlooked for the most part from reporters.… Read more »
I think you still misheard or misinterpreted some of what they said. 29 minute mark – It’s possible that LeBron didn’t view J.R. Smith as a throw-in. You’re right that the front office viewed Smith as such, but that’s exactly what Windhorst said. Windy said that LBJ really wanted J.R. when he was asked. You have read something that contradicts that? At 7:56 – No one stated that it was Joe Harris’s fault that we lost that game. They said that it was a bizarre decision for Blatt to play him for 17 straight minutes of the 2nd half. AND… Read more »
agreed hotsauce. i think many, if given time to speculate or listen to the insider sources would have spoken similar stuff. we all commented as such during that part of the season and that is when it came down to the relax and panic the blog thread that was predictable but still painful to read. i think this speculation about live and this summer is guys versions of us weekly. the journalism seems to be consistent across the board from windy and BS. i do think most of it is partially true. the rumor about love leaving is just something… Read more »
will get a better idea / read on it after tonights game / see if LeBron can get over his ” heat demons “—–the loss last night by the bulls may help in the decision whether to play love tonight or rest until sundays game with the buls—should be a great atmosphere tonight
The Heat are under .500
The Cavs have been the best team in the NBA lately and have a great record against the tough West. I don’t understand this idea that any matchup in the playoffs other than Atlanta will be remotely tough.
Because this is the team that LeBron was playing when he set a screen against his own player. They’re in his head a little.
You think a guy who has gone to 5/7 Finals, carrying an absolutley horrible Cleveland team with an awful coach to the Finals in 2007 and then a crappy Miami team last year to the Finals is a mental midget?
The dude is as tough as they come and in the playoffs he’s always a beast. They will handle anyone other than ATL in 4 or 5 games. ATL might take 6.
*yawn* LeBron can go to weird mental spaces. Dallas, Boston… Yes, he’s had great successes, but this season his had strange games in the opener and against Miami. Sometimes the spotlight is a little too big for even LeBron. He’s a man. He’s not a King.
He was weird in exactly 2 series. The Boston one when he got sick of carrying a terrible Cleveland team on his back, and the Dallas Finals where he seemed unsure of whether to take over or defer to Wade.
Other than that the Kind has been the KING in the playoffs. It won’t be a problem.
This is me getting
I’m very immature.
I though the recent BS Report was Simmons at his absolute most annoying. Agee with Nate that it wasn’t really all that bad, but it sounded like two high school girls gossiping at a sleepover. All the Love crap in the media has been annoying all season, and Simmons has been the absolute worst.
I really don’t want to see the Heat in the first round. I agree with Nate, who I believe noted that Lebron gets ‘weird’ in those games.
If we get the heat in the first round we will sweep or was in 5.
